Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2014 ----   was sent to us by Claudia Burris who hails out of Hoppie's Marina in Kimmswick, Mo......

Hi Bill !

Meet Allan Leslie and David Ripley, old friends from Nova Scotia, Canada. Their journey began Sept. 28, 2014, when they trailered Leslie's "hillbilly houseboat" to Winona, Minn., about 60 miles south of Minneapolis.

They left Winona (Mile 725) on Oct. 2 and arrived at Hoppies Marina (Mile 158) on Oct. 16. "We've been boating for years," explains Ripley, who met Leslie while whitewater rafting many years ago. "We've done dozens of whitewater kayaking trips on the east coat. Then Allan got this crazy idea in his head to get this houseboat!"

The team has taken several trips in the 2011 homebuilt houseboat, including the Trent Severn Waterway in Ontario, the Rideau Canal in Ontario, St. John River in Maine, and even the Erie Canal! Ripley jumped ship in Kimmswick and Leslie's wife joined him for the rest of the trip to Mobile, Ala., where they plan on arriving Nov. 28. Sounds like quite
an adventure!

See you on the river!

River Stewardship

The Adopt-A-River-Mile Program Allows For Adoption of River Miles........

Everyone has seen the signs on the roadway for the Adopt-The-Highway program, which allows people to "adopt" a section of the roadway, with the promise to keep it cleaned from litter.

Living Lands & Waters has instituted a similar program with the "Adopt-A-River-Mile" program, which allows the public an opportunity to "adopt" a river mile section.

One may adopt more than one river mile, and they may adopt one river bank, or both.  Any shoreline within your adopted mile is yours to keep clean........

Missouri River Pollution

Oil Well Blows Out, Missouri River Endangered.........

North Dakota officials are saying that an oil well owned by Oasis Petroleum Incorporated has blown out over the weekend, causing an oil spill that is threatening a Missouri River tributary.

So far, the well has leaked out over 67,000 gallons of crude oil.  The cause of the blowout is not known, but state officials believe that a nearby hydraulic fracturing operation may be the related due to a condition called "communication" between wells.

On Monday afternoon, crews were on hand to work on cleaning up the spill........

Arch Grounds Renovation Makes National Headlines........

Over the weekend, the $380 million Gateway Arch Grounds renovation project made national headlines, as the Wall Street Journal ran an article focusing on the project.

The WSJ article labeled the Arch Grounds renovation "a big job", adding that the Arch has been isolated from the city by Interstate 44, and that the plaza under the arch could at times seem barren.

Crews are working on placing the finishing touches on the park topping Interstate 44, which should be wrapped up just in time for the Gateway Arch's 50th anniversary on October 28........

Recovery Still Underway On CSS Georgia, More Artifacts Recovered........

The effort is being carried out aboard two 250 foot barges located above the wreck site.  According to archaeologist Loren Clark, this recovery is unique, since neither archaeology nor salvage efforts aren't normally done this way.

Mississippi River Opinions

Poor Report Card Calls For Increased "Parental" Involvement........

The Mississippi River, and it's tributaries drain about 41 percent of the continental United States, from the Rocky Mountains to the Alleghenies, and drain part or all of 31 states.

Recently, the Mississippi River received a D+ on it's health "report card".  The locks and dams are in poor condition, there are dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico, and development has eliminated necessary wetlands.

Accompanying the "report card" were demands for more attention and funding to keep the river clean, and productive for those who depend upon it.  The question remains; who will take charge of the situation, and how much will it cost?

An Abandoned Oil Waste Pit Eroding Into The River........

An abandoned pit that had been used for the storage of oil drilling mud and liquids close to 50 years ago is eroding into the Little Missouri River near Medora, North Dakota, threatening drinking water downstream.

According to Lynn Helms, the Department of Minerals Resources Director, the pit is "Priority One" on a list of sites slated for reclamation utilizing $1.5 million appropriated last spring.

The Department of Minerals Resources has known about the pit for many years, but hadn't discovered the erosion until they began prioritizing similar sites........

Paddling Down The River Helps Veterans Adjust........

Veterans Bart Lindberg and Mark Fox are getting close to the end of their 2,200 mile journey down the Mississippi River.  During their trip, the duo have discovered "river magic".

The river magic that the Vets speak of appears in the form of hot meals or comfortable places to stay during their journey.  It also appears in mail drops or emails about where people can meet them.

Lindberg and Fox started their journey in July, with the intentions of paddling away the worst of their war experiences, as part of a program sponsored by the Warrior Hike Foundation........

Saturday morning, a group of kayakers and canoers gathered to participate in the sixth annual Race to the Dome.  The event was sponsored by Missouri American Water.

There were two options for competitive and recreational paddlers, a 15.8 mile course on the Missouri River between the Hartsburg Access to Jefferson City, or a 26.6 mile race between Providence Access on the Perche Creek and Jefferson City.

The Race to the Dome raised approximately $9,000, which will benefit Missouri River Relief's efforts to educate the public, and encourage them to experience the river........

Winter Is Waiting In The Wings....  Is Your Boat Ready?

Fall is in the air, the crisp temperatures a harbinger of the winter to come.  Soon, your boat will need to be wrapped up in it's protective cocoon for it's long winters nap.

There are many things that need to be considered when winterizing your boat, and preparing for them now will pay off big-time come spring.

The Grafton Rendezvous Celebrates Frontier Life........

This weekend, a large group of re-enactors and vendors were reliving the frontier era prior to 1840, during the annual Grafton Rendezvous.

The rendezvous re-enactors set up period correct tents and teepees, and tried to stay warm while camping out along the Mississippi River.

Saturday morning, the re-enactors dressed in period correct costumes made of animal fur and leather, and demonstrated their talents in a variety of ways, from blacksmithing to crafting wooden furniture........

Corps Debating Where To Deposit Dredge Spoils........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking for public comments on a proposed plan that would designate five new placement sites for the placement of sand dredged from the Mississippi River.

The Corps issued an environmental assessment that includes a draft finding of "no significant impact" to the Mississippi River if the five sites are used to store some 1 million cubic yards of dredged materials.

The Corps needs to perform extensive dredging at the Lock 20 upper dredge cut in the main channel of the Mississippi River, upstream of Canton, as a sizable sandbar has been forming in recent years........

The Dock Coming Down....  American Legion Emblem Saved........

Currently, The Dock is in the process of being dismantled, but not everything is headed to the landfill.  On Friday morning, the six foot wide American Legion Emblem was cut free.

The 4,000 pound, 2 foot think emblem was hand laid in 1949 by Henry Cassini, of Cassini Tile and Marble Co, using colored concrete and marble chips.

Instead of being placed in the floor of it's new home, the American Legion emblem will stand outside of the new American Legion Post 26 hall........

Take A Look Into The Building Of The Largest Cruise Ship........

Work is continuing on what is being billed as the largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas, which is being built at France's STX shipyard.

The Harmony of the Seas is slated to debut sometime in April.  She will be the third vessel in Royal Caribbean's Oasis class, and will measure 227,000 tons.  She will displace her two sisters by over 1,700 tons.

The Harmony of the Seas will rise some 16 decks over the ocean, and will be able to carry a record 5,479 passengers at double occupancy, which is about 100 more passengers than her two sister ships........

River History....

October 17, 2013 in River History

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started the task of reopening all public facilities and recreation areas that were closed due to the government shutdown.

This included the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam and recreational facilities at area Corps of Engineers lakes. The Lock and Dams on the Mississippi River remained open.

The United States federal government entered a shutdown on October 1, 2013 and curtailed most routine operations after Congress failed to enact legislation appropriating funds for fiscal year 2014. The shut down ended on October 16, 2013 after House and Senate voted to reopen the government

Freshwater Mussels Equipped With Backpacks....  For Science....

Scientists with the University of Iowa have partnered with an odd test subject in an effort to reduce harmful nitrates in the waterways across the Midwest.

The researchers are utilizing freshwater mussels, equipped with 3D printed backpacks, to study the nitrogen cycle within the Mississippi River watershed.

The scientists are using mussels because they are filter feeders, and they remove excess nitrogen from the water column, and keeping it from reaching the Gulf of Mexico........

Asian Carp Still Threat To Great Lakes, Despite Barriers........

Thursday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed that smaller fish may be pulled past the electric barriers by barges transiting the area.

The announcement has reignited concerns that juvenile Asian carp could be moved into the Great Lakes in spite of barriers intended to stop them.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates three electrical barriers installed in the waterways south of Chicago, which are meant to keep the carp out........

News Release From BoatUS

Mustang Survival Voluntarily Recalls Two Models of Inflatable Life Jackets

ALEXANDRIA, VA, October 15, 2015 -- Mustang Survival has announced it is voluntarily recalling two selected models of inflatable personal flotation devices (PFDs) manufactured in Canada between September 2014 and September 2015. The recall is being issued for the reinforcement of a portion of the bladder assembly that may tear when the bladder lobes are flexed apart while fully inflated.

While a solution has been developed that corrects any affected products and prevents occurrence of this issue, the repair can only be performed at a Mustang Survival factory. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is urging boaters to check their life jacket inventory and see the easy identification guide at www.mustangsurvival.com/advisories to quickly determine if the life jacket is subject to the recall.

This recall notification is only for certain models as identified with model numbers that begin with either MD315 (sold in Canada) or MD318 (sold in the US). “No other Mustang Survival products are affected as they utilize different bladder assemblies or have been originally produced with the required reinforcement,” said Mustang in a statement.

Consumers are urged to return affected PFDs by directly contacting Mustang Survival’s Customer Service department at 1-800-526-0532 between 7:30am and 4:30pm PST, Monday through Friday for specific shipping instructions. Boaters should not return product to their retailer as all product inspections and repairs are being handled by Mustang Survival.

Complete details on this recall are available at www.mustangsurvival.com/advisories

The Mississippi River Given D+ On Report Card........

On it's report card from the "America's Watershed Initiative", the Mississippi River was given a grade of D+.  This report card is intended to be a wake up call to action, and a way to track progress.

More than 700 experts took two years to assemble their findings.  The report card focused on six main criterion:  economy, ecosystems, flood control, recreation, transportation, and water supply.

The Mississippi River was found to be deficient in the categories of flood control, pollution, and the condition of infrastructure, particularly at the locks and dams.........
