The Red Boat

RiverBills Pictures of the Day.... are of the Lewis and Clark "Red Boat" replica  as it returned from Canada and was being backed into it's storage / display spot in the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Nature Center

An important factor in trailering the replica boats to and from Canada for the filming of an HBO Special was the rebuilding of their trailers.  This project was done by Little John's Marine Service last winter.  Little John was kind enough to provide us with a brief overview of the project. Below is part #2...

LOUIS AND CLARK BOAT TRAILER PROJECT #2

Now we are shopping for parts

Please keep in mind that all the stuff needed for three trailers and an end of the line cost per trailer was not an easy task. After many conversations, we were all on the same page and one cost to make everything happen.

Enough semi trailer cord for three trailers purchased at one time ( A 150 ft. roll) at one half the price if purchased by the foot. Now that everyone knows and understands the quantity buying, we can go on from here.

A call to my friends at Etrailer.com we put an order together. We have three large trailers WITH:

  • The exact same wire from plug to tail light.

  • Every wire enclosed in conduit from plug to tail light.

  • Exact same Breakaway switches and hookup on all three trailers.

  • Exact same brakes, wheel bearings, hubs, drums, wheels, tires, LED lights, ect,

  • ONE SPARE FITS ALL.

  • Tires were provided by the great people at Shamel Auto And Tire in Bridgeton.

Next we have to plug in the paint on the trailers.

  • Sounds simple enough BUT there are international codes for that. Anyone that has done the great loop with their boat has experienced this.
Contaminants in the water are just as important on the trailer as a boat.
Again, our friends at All American Paint in St. Louis did the research and provided the proper epoxy primer and paint for our project.

THE TRAILERS LOOK GREAT BUT WILL THE BOATS FIT ON THEM????????????

News Release From BoatUS

Four Tips for Buying a Used Boat Trailer

ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 29, 2015 -- As the boating season ends in the northern climates, some boaters may be looking to find a trailer to store the boat for the winter. If you’re looking to buy a used boat trailer now or planning on buying a boat that comes with a used trailer, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has four buying tips:

Bring a measuring tape: With older trailers, the capacity plate or sticker may be long gone or too hard to read after being outside in the weather for years. But if you’d like to know a rough idea of a spring-axle trailer’s capacity, simply measure the diameter of the axle. An outer diameter (OD) axle tube size of 1.75” is typically rated for about one ton; 2.375” for 3,500 lbs.; and 3” for 5,200-7,000 lbs. – remember to subtract the weight of the trailer from the gross capacity.

Buying out of state: Trailers aren’t built the same because states’ trailering regulations aren’t the same. While most states require brakes for trailers rated to carry than more than 3,000 lbs., some states require brakes on trailers as light as 1,500 lbs., while a few others let you coast up to 4,500 pounds – although that’s not recommended. It can be expensive to retrofit brakes, and some states such as Florida require brakes on each axle. State-specific trailer registration information can be found at drivinglaws.aaa.com.

Why tire diameter matters: After an hour at highway speeds, a 13-inch tire will have spun 10,000 revolutions more than a 15-inch tire, which means more heat, bearing wear and increased chance of problems. Having a fully serviced spare tire ready to go – and the tools to install it – will solve many of the most common reasons for a trailer breakdown. If all else fails, having an annual BoatUS membership with Unlimited Trailer Assist roadside assistance to safely tow both your boat trailer and tow vehicle up to a 100 miles will make a bad roadside breakdown suddenly get much better.

Watch out for paperwork snafus: Not having ownership documents can sink a sale faster than you can say, “Did you put the plug in?” If the trailer is missing the vehicle identification number (VIN), it cannot be legibly read or doesn’t match ownership paperwork, you may run into an issue with the DMV and have to apply for a replacement. It’s better to have the seller handle this before the sale.

For a full look at this topic, see “Buying a Used Trailer?” at BoatUS.com/buyusedtrailer.

New Exhibit Added To Cahokia Mounds........

Cahokia Mounds recently added a new, permanent exhibit to their museum.  The new exhibit, "Wetlands and Waterways:  the Key to Cahokia" features a canoe discovered along a sandbar on the St. Francis River in Arkansas.

The Illinois State Archaeological Society purchased the canoe, and donated it to the Cahokia Mounds State Historical Site.  Bill Iseminger, the Assistant site manager, says that the canoe is in good condition, considering it's age.

Carbon dating placed the canoe at about 700 years old.  After acquiring it, the canoe was placed in a polyethylene glycol solution for three years, and it spent another two years drying........

RiverBills Pictures of the Day.... are of the Lewis and Clark replica keel boat as it returned from Canada and was being backed into it's storage / display spot in the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Nature Center.  All three of the the Lewis and Clark replica boats are back home in St. Charles, Mo in the  Make sure to stop by and visit them.

An important factor in trailering the replica boats to and from Canada for the filming of an HBO Special was the rebuilding of their trailers.  This project was done by Little John's Marine Service last winter.

Little John was kind enough to provide us with a brief overview of the project.

LOUIS AND CLARK BOAT TRAILER PROJECT

To start I would like to say "thank you" to the entire staff and board of the Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Nature Center and The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, Missouri for allowing me to be a part of this huge undertaking.

A special thank you to Larry Baschen , my key contact and great and dedicated member of the club. His engineering background and "design as we go" was huge in this project..

On to the mission.....
I was asked to go to Lewis & Clark Boathouse and Nature Center and look at a trailer that needed repair while the keel boat it hauled was being repaired at Port Charles Marina. Ironically, my wife and I had been to the Museum one week before and looked at not just the boats and trailers, but many, many other cool things there. I had no idea what I was getting into. The boat was (I think) 65 feet long. The trailer was 57 feet long and dying.

I was told that their three boats and trailers were to be taken to Canada for an HBO Movie Series and they asked me to get the trailers in shape after about 20 years of use. NOW, anyone that knows me would know my answer would be " With a little VO, we can think this through."

Some of the many things involved .....
Bringing the trailers up to today's standards, not only for US DOT but also Canada's standards. There were not many differences in the two countries' standards, but research was needed.

All three boats and trailers were headed to the middle of nowhere.  No lift facilities, just fishing boat ramps.  WITH A 65 FOOT BOAT??????????????

To start with, the keel boat was being repaired at Port Charles because of improper bunking and placement on trailer. The entire trailer was not to totally redone. This is where Larry Boschen, my son Randy Bicknese, and myself sat down and started a plan. Keep in mind that everything planned was in theory and until done we really did not know with all the variables..

After a total rebuild and lowering of the gooseneck of the trailer, we gained 31 inches of room to move boat forward on the trailer.......A HUGE DIFFERENCE

NOW, how many people out there have had their trailer hang up at a ramp and damaged the axle???  We designed and built a skid system so the there is always and only 4 inches of tire on the ground. This worked out great, for not only 60 ft out in the water but for high centering on a unit with an overall length of 85 feet.

Next, how we get the boat off and back onto the trailer???  Larger and wider bunks were built for proper support of the boat. Incidentally, the one inch by 10 inch White Oak board used for the bunks was provided by the Lewis And Clark Sawmill in West Alton. Please keep in mind that exact material thickness was quite important here for proper support of a boat that long.
An eight inch wide guide and keel support was installed in the center of the trailer.  It ran full length, making not only a guide for the keel boat but a walkway from the tow truck down to the front of boat.
Next on the program, was to install a 12 volt winch capable of pulling a 65 foot boat up on the trailer using only the power of the batteries on the semi.

NEXT WE GO PARTS SHOPPING

Arch Renovation Project Largest Of It's Type........

The $380 million renovation project on the Gateway Arch Grounds in St. Louis is the biggest single project in the history of the National Park Service.

Park Service officials say that the project is also the first renovation project to rely on local taxes.  It is also one of the most complex projects attempted, with at least three land owners, and six partners.

With all of the challenges of the project, it is also a national model for one of the most crucial Park Service initiatives:  Linking urban residents with their national parks........

Hi Bill,

Went to Lake Ozark yesterday to see the boat show at Captain Ron's. Did some snooping and found the remains on the tour boat Captain Larry Don that sank this past winter. It's across the street from Stewart's Restaurant back in a cove. From the looks of it, it will never be returned to it's former glory.

Below is a link to a "Wikipedia" history of the boat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Don

As far as the boat show goes it was a small show but a nice cross section of boats geared for the lake.

Also saw the original pirate boat "Gypse Rose". Took a couple of pictures it but because the boat was between me and the sun they didn't turn out, All I got was silhouette's

ken goode

Luxurious Cruising Offered On The American Queen........

It isn't often that a trip from the Quad Cities to Burlington is an all night affair, however, piloting the American Queen under bridges with inches to spare, and through a series of locks on the crowded Mississippi River is not a task to rush through.

The trip typically takes only a few hours by car, but about 12 hours on the river.  There is nary a complaint from the 400 passengers aboard the American Queen, as she is luxuriously appointed, and features gourmet meals, and first-rate entertainment.

The American Queen is not the main draw for these cruises.  That distinction is reserved for the Mississippi River itself, and the communities along the river that welcome the American Queen's passengers........

Towboat Engine Retrofit May Decrease Pollution........

On Thursday, the 56 foot Mississippi River towboat, Becky Sue received a pair of 600 horsepower diesel engines, which represents an effort to reduce pollution.

The Becky Sue's new engines were partially subsidized by the Minneapolis-based Environmental Initiative and Flint Hills, that is the owner of an oil refinery in Rosemount.

Environmental Initiative recently refit over 3,000 school buses in Minnesota as part of their Project Green Fleet.  Since the buses have been refitted, they have shifted their focus to heavy-duty diesel powered equipment........

West Nile Prevalent Around County.........

This year, the West Nile Virus has shown up all across Madison County.  So far, the only documented carriers of the virus in the region have been mosquitoes.

According to Amy Yeager, the Madison County Health Department Health Promotion Manager, the West Nile season began late this year, but it quickly crossed the country.

Yeager suggests that people avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn, as that is when mosquitoes are most active.  She also recommends that you use a good repellant, and report stagnant water to local officials........

McConkey says that he knew that he had a big one hooked when he grabbed the line.  He added that the fish was dragging his 17 foot Lowe boat around as if it were nothing.

McConkey said that he has caught large fish in the Missouri River before, but this one was the most memorable.  He now has the catfish skinned in the freezer, ready to be eaten.........

Archaeologists Surprised By Second Rifled Cannon........

Last week, archaeologists were pleasantly surprised while working on the wreck of the Confederate Ironclad CSS Georgia, when the 5-fingered grapple raised a 9,000 pound Dahlgren rifled cannon.

Workers were surprised because the cannon had been missed by several high-tech, multi beam sonar surveys.  They had also been surprised by the first Dahlgren cannon that was raised in July, as the sonar survey identified it as a different, smaller cannon.

Jim Jobling, a project manager with Texas A&M University's Conservation Research Laboratory, wasn't surprised, as he felt that a Dahlgren cannon would be found before diving even began back in January........
