9th Annual Earthtones Festival Was Saturday........

Saturday marked the ninth annual Mississippi Earthtones Festival, this year on Broadway in Alton.  The focus of this year's festival was preserving natural resources, keeping the rivers clean, and living green.

John Danneker of Illinois American Water said that they are a big supporter of the festival.  Danneker says one of the bigger issues with water quality is the disposal of medications down the drain, as they end up in the water supply.

One of the main focuses of this year's Earthtones Festival was keeping the waterways, primarily the Mississippi River clean.  Raising awareness of pollution in the waterways is what the festival was about........

Sweet Dreams

Sunsets are plentiful as well as beautiful from our vantage point here at the dock, but sunrises are nice too when we get some clouds to reflect the light from the rising sun coming up on our bow.
In spite of our satisfaction with our boat neighbors on both side of us, we moved slips anyway, just a couple of weeks ago. When a majority of boats in our area of the marina (the 45 foot slips on the West dock) moved in anticipation of Hurricane Erika, some did not move back and a slip we had been eyeing became available. The slip was only two spaces away to our south, just on the other side of our then current boat neighbors, and when we mentioned to them that we were thinking about moving, they both were delighted.
We asked Judy, the dock master, about moving our boat to this other slip, and after some deliberation about how some future guests could be accommodated in a slip other than the one we wanted to move to, she concluded that since we were now "permanent residents", we had priority. It didn't hurt that our current boat neighbor, Caroline, works in the marina office.
One of our reasons for liking this new slip was the fact that the boat that our neighbors have is over 50 feet, and their stern blocks our view somewhat of the channel coming into the harbor, as well as the rest of the West docks. It's not a big thing, but we felt just a little "boxed in" between two aft cabin vessels. Sometimes it's just the little things.
Also, a factor in the equation was that the pier we would be tied to was recently rebuilt, so we wouldn't have to move again in the future to rebuild the pier we were on, a certainty. Once we started counting reasons for moving, the reasons started adding up. Another one was that we wouldn't have the prevailing easterly winds blocked by the laundry room, nor the view to the East. How did we ever stay for over ten months in that ratty old slip? Go to http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/ to continue reading this latest blog

Bill,

The children of our community made cards to honor a Navy combat veteran who is taking on the mighty Mississippi to honor fallen heroes. Chris Ring is hoping to become the first American to swim the entire length of the Mississippi River, in an effort to raise awareness and support for those who have fought for our country. Chris began the 2,552-mile “Swim for their Sacrifice” on the 71st anniversary of D-Day, at Itasca State Park. He plans to swim about 16 miles per day in order to arrive in the Gulf of Mexico by Veteran’s Day. He will swim by Grafton today Friday, Sept 18.

One child writes:

Thank you! You are so brave! We all appreciate what you are doing and what you have done.
Thank you for serving. Swim on!

Good luck Chris!!

Board Approved Levee Plans........

During this week's meeting of the Madison County Board, levee maintenance was the primary topic of discussion.  The majority of the board members voted in favor of the 500 year plan.

US Coast Guard

News Release

UPDATE 9: Response to collision near Columbus

PADUCAH, Ky. – The unified command in Paducah continues to respond to a spill in the Mississippi River at mile marker 937, Wednesday as active recovery efforts are underway to remove the submerged clarified slurry oil spilled as a result of a vessel collision on September 2, 2015.

Recovery is focused on the two anomalies near the incident site that were detected by high resolution side scan sonar. These two areas were broken down into 24 grids to enable response personnel to target removal of the oil and document the progress.

As of Tuesday afternoon, an environmental clamshell equipped with precision dredge position software was removing moderate to heavily oiled sediment from the river bottom. In addition, Vessel Submerged Oil Recovery Systems (VSORS) pulling snare lines are also being utilized in the recovery of oil in the grids with less concentrated oil deposits. Re-assessment of these areas by side scan sonar will determine if the end point recovery criteria for pollution has been met.

Hydrocarbon sampling of the water column and sediment will continue throughout these recovery operations.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation by the Coast Guard and the national Transportation Safety Board

Aldermen:  Voters Should Decide On Port District Inclusion........

There are some aldermen in Grafton that would like to let the voters decide if the city should remain within America's Central Port District, and it is their intention to place the question on a ballot.

During the next Grafton City Council meeting, Alderman Jerry Bauersachs intends to make a motion to place an advisory referendum on a ballot that would ask voters if they want to remain in the port district.

While the port district has the ability to rise revenues through taxing devices, such as bond issues, during it's approximately 50 year history, originally the Tri City Port District, it has not sought taxpayer funding........

News Release From BoatUS

No-Cost "Boater's Guide to Winterizing" Offered by BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 16, 2015 -- Water expands in volume by about nine percent when it freezes, creating a staggering force that can crack a boat engine block, damage fiberglass, split hoses, or destroy a boat’s refrigeration system overnight. As cold weather approaches, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) dug into its claims data and found that more than three-quarters of winter-related claims involved cracks in the engine block or the exhaust manifolds. Now, the national boating services, safety and advocacy group has available at no-cost a 15-page “Boater's Guide to Winterizing” that can ensure boaters don’t miss a step for any type of boat.

“Boaters up North know they need to winterize, so their freeze claims almost always involve poor winterizing,” said BoatUS Director of Technical Services Beth Leonard. “In the temperate South, the issue can be a case of no winterizing, or relying on a heater when the electricity goes off, usually when you need it most.”

The downloadable brochure addresses the reasons for more than 95 percent of the freeze claims handled by the BoatUS Marine Insurance Program in the past decade. Included are chapters on: Storing your boat - The options and the tradeoffs; a Winterizing Checklist to use as the starting point for creating your own boat’s winterizing list; Engines and Drives - The dos and don’ts; and Plumbing - Getting the water out, which is great for larger boats.

Additional information includes tips on choosing antifreeze, lessons learned from BoatUS Consumer Affairs about protecting yourself with a winterization contract, and green winterizing information.

The checklist is available at

Reportedly, two men were attempting to swim to an island in the Mississippi River, east of the Trail of Tears campgrounds, when a man saw his friend being swept downstream........

Barge Brushes Cumberland River Blue Bridge........

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet sent a bridge inspector out to the U.S. 62 Cumberland River "Blue" Bridge at Lake City, after receiving reports that a barge tow scrubbed a bridge pier.

The tow operator reported that he was heading north out of the Barkley Dam Lock, when the tow, consisting of five sand barges and 4 rock barges contacted the bridge pier.

No damage to the barges was reported, and only a scrape on the pier.  The minor nature of the incident means that the U.S. Coast Guard didn't order the span closed to traffic........

News Release From BoatUS

2015 Life Jacket Design Competition Winners Break New Ground

LOUISVILLE, KY, September 15, 2015 – What would a modern life jacket look like if you threw out the rulebook and started with a clean slate? The answer lies with the winners of the 2015 “Innovation in Life Jacket Design Competition” announced today at the International Boat Builders Exhibition and Conference in Louisville. Sponsored by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the Personal Floatation Device Manufacturers Association (PFDMA), a team of five judges from the boating, paddling and life jacket manufacturing industry reviewed nearly 250 contest submissions from as far away as Mongolia and New Zealand, and also asked recreational boaters to vote for their favorite design entry.

The goal of the competition was to rethink a 100-year-old design, seek out the newest technologies and design innovations and develop interest in newer, more versatile life jackets. Design entries were judged on the following criteria: innovation, wearability, value/affordability, reliability, versatility and practicality. At stake was $15,000 in prize money.

Competition Judge and Image Base Vice President Joe Fogarty said, “Whether a commercial enterprise, an individual inventor-entrepreneur, a student or a group of Scouts, the 2015 Life Jacket Design Competition brought forth a lot of creativity. The entries we chose will not only keep us afloat, but showed thoughtfulness, problem solving and practicality.”

Judge Lili Colby, Owner and “chief PFDiva” at paddlesport life jacket manufacturer MTI Adventurewear said, “It was exciting to see that so many of the competitors shared a common goal to create more wearable product for the average recreational boater. Thinking ‘out of the box’ not only meant that the designs need to work, but that they also need to look good and be comfortable to wear. I wouldn’t be surprised to find a number of the finalist’s designs make it to market someday if they can be US Coast Guard approved.”

Added Judge Christopher Stec and chief operating officer of ACA|Canoe-Kayak-SUP-Raft-Rescue, “The contest truly showed innovation in PFD design at its best. From highly technical entries to simple concepts, there are several new ideas out there that could help boaters stay safer out on the water.”

Additional judges included marine industry consultant, speaker, and former “West Marine Advisor,” Chuck Hawley and Frank Solazzo, a Team Leader with Leland Limited which supplies high-pressure gas filled cylinders used in inflatable life jackets.

The winners announced today are:

First Place ($10,000): Michael Garman of Moseley, Virginia submitted his prototype design that uses two-part expanding foam encased in a comfortable thermal fabric that’s designed to keep the wearer cool. The design uses a smartphone app to submit exact body measurements to the factory where the lifejacket is custom molded, offering a perfect fit right out of the box. A heat reflecting fabric can be used on cold days to help keep the wearer warm – or reversed for hot days that combine with an inner fabric mesh to keep the wearer cool. Accessories such as a rear mounted hydration pack – great for paddlers – and custom pocket choices add versatility. A built-in signal mirror and whistle improve safety. Go to http://goo.gl/B9RYhP for a look.

Second Place ($3,000): Jimi Beach of the two-year-young Aegis Safety Products in Orlando, Florida took second place with his brand new, soon-to-market, inflatable floatation “Lifeshirt” that blends affordability with comfort and performance. The “actionwear” design looks similar to a sport shirt and is intended for a range of uses from boating to surfing. Offering automatic or manual inflation, a patented design resists inadvertent inflation from rain or splashes but activates instantly when the user’s head or shoulders submerge. Retail pricing is expected to remain consistent with or lower than other PFDs on the market. Lifeshirt is currently undergoing certification for adults and children in a lightweight performance class of personal floatation devices. Go to https://goo.gl/cNzjtW for a look.

Third Place ($2,000): Jessie Kate Brown of Lafayette, Louisiana submitted a theoretical design for the “Comfort Flex Life Vest,” a comfortable form-fitting design that increases visibility and inspires user confidence. “Relief cuts” on the side add buoyant material while a new hinge point and a lobster tail-like relief cut on the middle of the back of the jacket allow the wearer to easily bend their body, unlike some current vest-style designs which have one-piece backs. A reflective collar, and an athletic spandex shell and liner increase comfort and wearability.

This is the third time BoatUS Foundation and PFDMA have teamed up for a PFD Design Contest. For more, go to BoatUS.org/design. Video available at: https://goo.gl/yZuBmB.
