Swim For Their Sacrifice

No Stop at Two Rivers Marina

Bill,

I had been in contact with the swim for the sacrifice group by email multiple times over the past month. We had offered them our cabins at no cost and whatever else they may have needed. We said that we come from a family of veterans and would love to help them with anything that they may need.

I have been tracking them to know when to expect them, and I am so bummed that they passed us right up yesterday!! (09-08-15)

I hope you guys get a chance to host them in the Saint Louis area. I will be watching so that maybe I can attend any festivities you guys have planned, I would really love to meet them!

Thanks for your support of this project, I think it is amazing!!

The event is like the reenactments at Prairie Du Rocher, Fort Massac, or the discontinued Heritage Days festival that was held at Lewis and Clark Community College........

Important Upcoming Event !

DURING THE SUMMER OF 1815 the United States had assembled all Chiefs, Kings and Warriors of the Nations that touched the waters of the great Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to treaty with them. This was the largest assembling of American Indian tribes ever seen west of the Mississippi. These treaties at the conclusion of the War of 1812 were to bring Peace and Friendship between the residents of the Missouri and Illinois Territory and the Native Americans. THE CITY OF PORTAGE DES SIOUX and the Land Between the Rivers Historical Society invites everyone to a ceremony to commemorate the signing of the 1815 Treaties for Peace and Friendship on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pecan Grove where the original treaties were signed two-hundred years ago. The City of Portage des Sioux and the Osage Nation pledges to continue that friendship begun 200 years ago. CHAIR STOLEN....

Iím sending this in for my friend Tim Gossett.

He and his family were staying on Lower Iowa this past holiday weekend and Sunday while they were in the water, someone walked up and took his brand new Zero Gravity Chair. They even took off a throw able boat cushion and put it on the chair next to it. Asking that they please contact Tim at 636-284-8152 with any info or if they are willing to step up and return it.

Makes me sick to think that we cannot even get into the water without keeping an eye on all possessions.

Thanks,
Dave Stolze

More Closures For The Champ Clark Bridge........

Even though the Missouri Department of Transportation is still compiling the results of the recent inspection of the Champ Clark Bridge, some preliminary findings were revealed Tuesday.

Brian Haeffner, an Area Engineer for MoDOT, said that during the inspection, they discovered rivets that must be replaced, which will require temporary closures of the span.

The gusset plates that secure several pieces of the bridge's truss are being extensively analyzed.  The complete results of the inspection will be revealed after a few more weeks........

Quinsippi Island Bridge Issue Addressed........

During Wednesday's monthly meeting of the Quincy Park Board, they took their next steps in dealing with the Quinsippi Island Bridge issue.  The bridge is the only way to get vehicles to Art Keller Marina, and the Lincoln-era log cabin village.

Earlier in the year, an underwater inspection of the bridge revealed issues that downgraded the span's rating from fair to poor, leaving the Park Board searching for solutions.

According to Park Board President John Frankenhoff, a committee consisting of board members, consultants, and Quincy Park District staff members has been formed to address the public's concerns pertaining to the bridge.  This committee will meet for the first time on September 16, at 6 pm........

Boat Sinks At The Lake........

Last weekend, a 32 foot Chris Craft sank in the Lake of the Ozarks.  Luckily, the passengers aboard the vessel were not injured.

Reportedly, the yellow Chris Craft was cruising in Lick Branch Cove, when it began taking on water.  The vessel's captain headed to a nearby dock, and had all aboard abandon ship before the stern sank.

It is believed that the vessel struck something below the surface, tearing a transom seal.  As on this time, an official cause for the sinking has not been determined........

Fishy Tales From The Calcasieu River In Louisiana

Ultra Rare Pink Dolphin Spotted In The Calcasieu River....  May Be Pregnant....

Back in 2007, Captain Erik Rue with the Calcasieu Charter Service first saw a pink dolphin they call "Pinky" while fishing in the Calcasieu River's ship channel.

According to Rue, the baby pink dolphin would always swim with her mother.  8 years later, "Pinky" swims on her own, and with a pod of other dolphins.

Rue says that he recently saw "Pinky" mating, so he is wondering if she is pregnant, and if so, what coloration will her dolphin calf have........

Thanks,
Dave Stolze

An Actress Makes A Home On The River........

Twin Cities actress, director and choreographer, Austene Van believes that the water is magical, and it possesses powers.  She adds that she always felt most at home on the water.

Van intended to live on the water at some point, but was not sure how to make it happen.  A theater colleague discussed her houseboat with Van, giving her the idea of purchasing a low-cost houseboat, and fixing it up herself.

Van got her hands on a 1971 homemade houseboat, and set to work, refurbishing the main floor of the vessel, and adding a second level, nearly doubling the her space.........

Bill,

Had a great day Wednesday on the river with family. A perfect day for a boat ride to Grafton to enjoy food and our beverage of choice. Although the water levels are low, the boating was perfect! Everyone had a great time, ended the day with a relaxing happy hour on the boat and an evening swim at YCSL.

River History....

September 5, 1856 in River History

The ďGreat White Arabia" sank on the Missouri River on Sept. 5, 1856 after hitting a jagged sycamore snag at Quindaro Bend, when she was less than one hour out of Kansas City. Ten minutes after hitting the snag she lay at the bottom of the Missouri River.
Since that area of the river was shallow at the time the upper decks stayed above the water. This allowed for the escape of all passengers and crew. The only casualty was a mule that was tied on the aft lower deck.
The steamboat was 188 feet long and had been operating on the Missouri River for only three years. She carried 130 passengers and some 200 tons of freight when she went down.

Geocaching Has Come To The Illinois River Road........

There is a new way to enjoy the Illinois River Road Scenic Byway:  Geocaching, which is kind of like an outdoor treasure hunt.  All told, there are 90 caches, 15 hidden in each of six cities along the Illinois River Road.

The object is to find as many of the caches as possible.  If a participant finds 10 out of the 15 caches, the codes contained within each container may be submitted with a nominal fee for a Byway geocoin.

Each of the geocoins are different, and illustrate which gateway community the cache was discovered in.  There are also guide and logbooks so participants can document their findings........

Levees Turn Double Duty, Standards Allow Feds Leeway........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partnered up with the state of Louisiana to construct a new storm surge protection system near New Orleans.  Nearly 35 miles of levees are part of the $14.5 billion project.

It is possible that the joint effort could actually save the Corps money at the expense of local taxpayers.

Levee heights of 21 to 23 feet are required for the hurricane protection system, whereas the river levees are only required to have heights of 20 feet.  This means that the Corps won't have to pay to raise the levees; the local levee district will have to foot the bill........
