According to a new report, the Merchants and MacArthur railroad bridges are the main investment priorities in the St. Louis region, and one of the spans is in need of replacement.

The span's importance was noted in the Southwestern Illinois Freight Transportation Study, which had been commissioned by Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois, in order to assess the area's ranking in the freight market, and determine where to focus investment.

The study looked at how freight transport may be expanded over the next several years, especially in Madison and St. Clair Counties in Illinois, as a manufacturing or distribution hub........

Hurricane Erika That Wasn't

We just don't get tired of these sunsets in the Keys! At times we second guess our decision to face our stern into the west because the late afternoon sun is so hot shining into the cabin, but when the sun sets below our flybridge overhang, we just close the shade on the salon door for an hour or so. The really good weather is coming soon.
The weather has been foremost on our minds for the last few days. First we had tropical storm Danny threatening to come our way, but that storm dissipated quickly and was soon replaced by tropical storm Erika, which had our attention in a big way.
Our "hurricane plan" which is filed with our insurer, Boat U.S., states that our "plan" is to simply go where the hurricane isn't going to be. Well, we found out that trying to guess where the hurricane is going to be is nearly impossible for the experts, let alone us.
First Erika was coming straight at us, then the path switched to the east to head up the Florida coast to miss us, then as the storm passed the Dominican Republic, the path changed again, heading straight for us and up the east coast of Florida, then just before the storm dissipated like Danny, the path was forecasted to go south of us, just north of the tip of Cuba. If we were going to go anywhere, it would have been hard to guess where to.

Complaints Stem From Bowfishing Tournament........

Last month, teams of anglers headed to Iowa City, Iowa for a bowfishing tournament with searchlights, loud airboats, and plenty bows and arrows.

Since the tournament wrapped up, there have been enough complaints that officials are thinking about tightening the rules on bowfishing tournaments, as the event took place at night, and participants used bright lights to spot their quarry.

According to Tim Mason, an environmental activist, the bowfishing tournament turned night into day, and blasted his eardrums like he was on an airport runway.........

Paddlers Hit The River For The Big River Regional........

On Saturday, hundreds of kayakers, stand-up paddlers, and small paddleboats hit the Mississippi River to race 13 miles for the third annual Big River Regional.

The co-organizer of the Big River Regional, Walker Higgins says that he thinks that the popularity of paddle sports in that region of the nation is because Louisianans are at home on the water.

Higgins added that paddling is quite easily picked up, and offers a different perspective than any other water activity.  He said that the paddling community is very laid back, which fits right in around Louisiana........

Modes was previously an IT employee for a university library, and homemade boating is his hobby.  He had read quite a few memoirs penned by people that had traveled the river, but the majority were written years ago.

Modes wanted to develop a project that was dedicated to listening to people, chronicling what the river was like in 2014, and 2015, as well as describing the modern problems such as Asian carp........

Volvo Penta Demos Their New Sterndrives........

Ron Huibers, the president of Volvo Penta of the Americas, talks quite a bit about how important it is to make boating easier for consumers.

Volvo Penta, and others in the industry responded by utilizing technology to decrease maintenance and increase reliability.  The performance of the gasoline sterndrive engine has increased as well.

On Thursday, Elaine Cirillo had an opportunity to test four Volvo Penta sterndrive test boats at the company's test center.  The vessels were all under 30 feet in length, and were powered by Volvo Penta's new V8 300 and 350, as well as the V6 280........

RiverBill:

Hi! We had a great weekend on the river! We started off bright and early Friday morning at Cedar Hill, where we had a great breakfast with the entire Hogback Bunch. Our crew consisted of 4 boats, and 26 River Rats. We only did a Half-Back and hung around the river in Louisiana, MO. On Saturday we chatted with local boaters at the beach. It was hot, but it was fun! We're looking forward to another 3 day weekend on the water!

The Fire Extinguisher Laws Have Changed.........

Earlier this year, legislation was passed by the Missouri General Assembly that changes some requirements for boaters in regards to the type and number of fire extinguishers kept aboard the vessel.

HB 269 and SB 231 requires that Class 2 vessels operating in Missouri waters have two B1 type fire extinguishers, one B2 fire extinguisher, or a fixed fire extinguishing system, and one B1 type fire extinguisher.

The prior requirements required boaters carry either 1 B2 type extinguisher, or two B1 type fire extinguishers.  The new laws take effect on Friday, August 28, 2015........

Missouri Senate Bill 231

Motor Fuel Tax Watercraft Exception

Effective 28 August, 2015

Hi guys,

I am attaching a copy of a flyer we received from the State of Mo. I was surprised that this has not shown up on River Bills.

It states that the Marinas that sell fuel to boaters only has to decrease the price of gasoline by the tax on Gas from the State, which is 17.3 cents per gallon,. The boaters will not be able to apply for the fuel tax refund on any gas purchased on the river after today 8/27/15.

Think this should be make public, as the way I understand it, the State does not like all the refund requests they get, so they are putting this
on the Marinas. We have to pay the tax, and then apply for a refund. So Friday 8/29/15 our gas price will reflect a price drop only due to we are not charging State Tax.

Thank you,

Glenna Tolliver

Johnís Boat Harbor.

Mississippi River At Keokuk, Iowa

Several Wastewater Spills Occurred At Keokuk........

Earlier this week, there were two incidents where industrial wastewater was discharged from a Keokuk bio-refinery into the Mississippi River.

The first spill occurred on Monday morning, when an expansion joint failed on a pump at Roquette America, allowing 500 gallons of industrial wastewater to flow into the Mississippi River.

Then, on Tuesday evening, approximately 3,500 gallons of industrial wastewater was spilled from the same facility into the Mississippi River.  Again, a failed expansion joint on a condensate pump was blamed for the spill........
