A Decision Must Be Made On Quinsippi Island Bridge........

Earlier this year, the Quincy Park Board learned that the bridge to Quinsippi Island was downgraded from fair to poor, following an underwater inspection.

The Park District is forced to either repair the span, or shut it down.  Park District Executive Director Rome Frericks estimated that a fix would cost $150,000, and a replacement of the bridge could cost up to $5 million.

In late July, the Park District sought bids for the repair work.  Only one bidder, County Contractors Inc. of Quincy submitted a bid.  They priced the job at $695,000........

Dale Sanders is an 80 year old man that has undertaken the challenge of paddling a canoe the length of the Mississippi River, not only for a world record, but for something more.

The record Sanders is hoping for is being the oldest man to complete the Mississippi River source to sea journey.  He is also trying to complete the feat in only 80 days.  He began the challenge on May 15.

The other reason Sanders is paddling is his grand niece, Anna, who was diagnosed with Type-1 juvenile diabetes.  Sanders goal is to raise awareness and funds to fight juvenile diabetes........

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Perseids /ˈpɜrsiːɨdz/ are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The Perseids are so called because the point from which they appear to come, called the radiant, lies in the constellation Perseus. The name derives in part from the word Perseides (Περσείδες), a term found in Greek mythology referring to the sons of Perseus.

A near-Earth perspective of its orbit, the radiant of the Perseid meteor shower, and the orbit of the shower’s parent comet, 109P/Swift-Tuttle, to show their spatial relationships on August 12 00:00 UTC. The Perseid debris cloud is fairly wide (~0.1 AU), filling the frame.
The stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift–Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 133-year orbit.[5] Most of the particles have been part of the cloud for around a thousand years. However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that was pulled off the comet in 1865, which can give an early mini-peak the day before the maximum shower.[6] The dimensions of the cloud in the vicinity of the Earth are estimated to be approximately 0.1 astronomical units (AU) across and 0.8 AU along the latter’s orbit, spread out by annual interactions with the Earth’s gravity.[7]

Facebook Friends Meet On The River........

Recently, some members of the Missouri River Paddlers Facebook group held a get-together, offline and on the river.  Following about 28 months of planning, about 45 paddlers met up on Sunday at Katfish Katy's Campground in Columbia.

The group made the journey to Noren Access to camp out for the night.  Norm Miller, the group's administrator, believes that their numbers will swell to about 75 paddlers by the time they reach St. Louis on Saturday.

After reaching St. Louis, some of the paddlers plan to continue their trip to Louisiana and the Gulf.  Others intend to head to the other side of the world to conquer the next big river........

Missouri History Museum
Last of Summer Speaker Series this Sunday

Our program “The Peace and Friendship Treaties” on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Missouri History Museum tells the story of the Treaties signed with the Osage on September 12, 1815 and the upcoming Commemoration event at Portage des Sioux 200 years later. For more on the event visit http://peace-friendship.com online.

This series of treaties officially marked the end of conflicts between the U.S. and the Native Americans in the west, at the conclusion of the War of 1812, with a purpose to “restore to such Tribes or Nations respectively all the possessions, rights, and privileges which they may have enjoyed or been entitled to in 1811″. The treaties formed the legal basis in which tribes were relocated west of Missouri into Indian Territory, clearing the way for Missouri to enter the Union. President James Madison appointed Gov. Wm. Clark, Governor Ninian Edwards and Auguste Chouteau to arrange the treaty, by extending 37 invitations to the Chiefs. The tribes signing (in order of signatures) were the Potawatomi, Piankeshaw, Lakota, Mdewakanton Dakota, Sioux, Omaha, Kickapoo, Osage, Sac, Fox, Iowa, and composed the largest gathering of tribes ever seen in Missouri. Made and concluded between the United States of America, on the part and behalf of the said States, of the one part; and the King, Chiefs, and Warriors, of the Tribes or Nations, on the part and behalf of their said Tribes or Nations, of the other part was signed the summer of 1815 at Portage des Sioux.

At 1:00pm on Saturday, September 12, 2015 the Osage will return to Portage des Sioux, in St. Charles County. The City of Portage des Sioux invites you to join us as we commemorate our peace and friendship of 200 years. Once again the Osage voice will sing, the drum will sound and the story be told.

Corps Eases Flood Fight Status On The Lower Mississippi River........

A 1 pm on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deactivated the rigorous "Phase II" flood fight rules, as well as the daily inspections of the levees bounding the Mississippi River.

The Phase II Flood Fight rules prohibit work on the levees, and mandates that inspections are carried out on the levees by the Corps and local levee district officials.

The Corps officials did say that the Phase I flood fight rules still applied until the level of the Mississippi River falls below 121 feet in New Orleans.  Friday afternoon, the level was 14.41 feet........

When residents move into the A-Mill Artist Lofts overlooking the Mississippi River, a portion of their electricity may be generated a couple of floors below them.

Later this month, construction crews intend to install a 600 kilowatt turbine generator in the former Pillsbury A-Mill's basement.  At one time, the mill was the largest flour mill in the world.

According to Neal Route, an associate with developer Dominium, they expect that the system will generate about 70 percent of the building's power........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Many Events Planned For Shootout 2015........

Over the past 27 years, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Powerboat Race has grown from just two days of boat racing to two weeks of activities of all types.

The Shootout has boosted business tourism by an estimated $7 million.  Hundreds of powerboat racers, and tens of thousands of powerboat race fans head to the lake for what many claim to be the best Shootout in the country.

Perhaps the best part of the Shootout is that the event's main goal is raising funds for local firefighters and charities.  The festivities begin on Saturday, August 15, and will run through Sunday, August 30........

I was out Sunday on the Mississippi and took pictures of the Dredge "Potter" operating just downstream of Enterprise Island. The material being pumped up was being deposited near/on the Island 521. On line, I read that the Potter was built in 1932 and was steam powered. In the last few years, it under went a $20M repowering and is now a diesel/electric boat

News Release From BoatUS

First TowBoatUS Port in the Nation Certified to Assist in US Coast Guard Search and Rescue Efforts

Mystic, a 24-hour, on water recreational boat towing and assistance company, will render Good Samaritan aid when asked. And now when the US Coast Guard asks for help in locating lost boaters, the privately-owned towing company will be able to lend a better ‘Good Sam’ hand at finding them. That’s due to TowBoatUS Mystic’s completion in May of a pilot Search-and-Rescue (SAR) training program developed by USCG Sector Long Island Sound that certifies non-US Coast Guard assets such as on water towing companies, police and fire departments or harbormasters for SAR response.

In a ceremony today at USCG Station New London to acknowledge TowBoatUS Mystic’s completion of the Coast Guard Search and Rescue Procedures and Boat Operations Course for the New London Port Security Group, Capt. Jeff Dziedzic of TowBoatUS Mystic signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with US Coast Guard Captain Ed Cubanski, Commander Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.

Said Capt. Dziedzic, “We’ll always render emergency aid. We’re not in the rescue business — it’s just something you do as a fellow boater. This unique US Coast Guard course creates a cooperative environment and gets all of us on the same page with SAR protocols, communications and operations. The signing of the MOA represents a great achievement for my company as it sets a precedent of training and safety standards which greatly benefits the boating community and port partners. This voluntary, public-private working relationship it creates will ultimately help save lives and property during search and rescue missions.”

Boat Maintenance

Is It Better To Purchase Oil And Filters From The Engine Manufacturer?

Most powerboaters are used to spending plenty of money on their boats, especially on maintenance, as supplies and parts identified "for marine use" are generally more expensive.

Powerboaters will admit that parts meant for use in a marine environment are specifically engineered to survive in harsh conditions.  They may question, however, the need to purchase basic maintenance items, such as oil and filters from the manufacturer of their propulsion system.

A bit of a lesson on the ratings on oil can help with the decision, starting with it's American Petroleum Institute rating, which means that the oil meets a minimum standard........

The Goldenrod Showboat

It Is Likely The The Goldenrod Will Be Scrapped........

It seems that the end is near for the historic Goldenrod Showboat.  On Wednesday, preservationists announced that the vessel will likely be scrapped.

Jake Medford, the vice president of the not for profit, Historic Riverboat Preservation Association said that this was the toughest decision that he has ever made.  The HRPA had been trying to raise enough funding to renovate the vessel.

The HRPA decided at a meeting held Tuesday evening to change their focus to salvaging what it can from the interior of the Goldenrod.  Medford said that after all the adversity she weathered over 106 years, it is hard to see the Goldenrod go down like this........

By the end of this year, over one million pounds of debris will be removed from the Ohio River.  The lofty goal will be achieved by Chad Pregracke, and the volunteers and crew of Living Lands & Waters, with the help of John Deere.

The equipment manufacturer John Deere has been a long time supporter of Living Lands & Waters, and they have provided a new John Deere 210G LC Excavator.

John Deere's Construction and Forestry Division teamed up with Pierce Pacific Manufacturing and Erb Equipment Company to construct an excavator that meets the heavy duty demands of Living Lands & Waters........

Mississippi River Shipping

The Facts Of Life On The River........

About one thousand people spent a portion of their weekend learning about life on the river, from a commercial point of view, during the annual Chamber of Commerce Towboat Festival in Grafton.

Visitors were able to tour a 200 foot long towboat to get a better idea of how barges and tows operate on the Illinois and Mississippi River.

They learned that Relief Captain Jeff "Ziggy" Zerwig's Twyla Luhr  pushes rock from Ste. Genevieve to Louisiana over a period of 28 days.  They also learned that the vessel uses about 4,000 gallons of fuel per day going downriver, and coming back upstream against the current consumes 8,000 gallons of fuel........

The IDNR Office In Alton Has Been Closed........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources office in Alton has been shut down.  It was located at 4521 Alton Commerce Parkway.  The lease on that facility expired on July 31, and as a cost cutting measure, it was not renewed.

There were 10 employees at that office.  They were assigned to other areas.  According to IDNR Public Relations Director, Chris Young, staff members had relocated to available office space at local state parks.

Young added that moving the IDNR to the state parks placed them closer to the areas they serve, closing the Alton office will save the IDNR over $106,000 per year on the lease........

River Bill:

We had a great Saturday on the Mississippi! We participated in the My River Home Poker Run and had a great time! We started at MRH for the Bloody Mary breakfast, headed to Alton Marina for the wild card, made a "shot stop" at the island, visited Kinder's for a peach daiquiri, ate lunch at Cedar Hill, went to Boathouse for live music, and ended back up at MRH for the BBQ dinner. We covered a lot of water for the crummy cards we were dealt, but can't complain because the company was great! Now, we're looking forward to The Blessing, the scavenger hunt, and Hogback!
