Business Owners:  Grafton Is Open For Business!

Over the next several days, the Mississippi River is expected to fall considerably, and some Grafton business owners could not be more happy.

Kim Baalman-Eberlin, owner of The Whole Scoop, and Sharon Harrison, the owner of Harrison's Antiques, want everyone to know that Grafton is open for business.  They add that The Hawg Pit is not open.

Baalman-Eberlin says that they want to start a campaign to remove the word "flood" from Grafton.  She added that Grafton doesn't flood, they just have high water; and when IDOT says Route 100 is closed, Grafton isn't........

Vet Swimming River For Legacies Alive........

28 year old Navy combat veteran, Chris Ring set out to complete a feat that no American has ever accomplished:  Swimming the entire 2,552 mile length of the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico.

This project is called the Swim for Their Sacrifice challenge to honor the Gold Star Families.  The Swim for Their Sacrifice is the second challenge of Legacies Alive, which is a not for profit group that is committed to bringing attention to the sacrifices made by people who lost loved ones in combat.

Ring says that he has never done something like this before.  He covers between 10 and 20 miles per day, dependant upon the river currents, and if there are families for Ring to meet........

The Mississippi River Is Reaching Historic Levels........

The level of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi has reached the second highest summer level in recorded history, and even though it reached it's crest Saturday, the high water will be around for awhile.

It was during the Great Flood of 1928 that the Mississippi River reached it's maximum recorded height during the summer months, and it took months before the waters receded.

The Mississippi River was expected to crest at 45.5 feet on Saturday.  Sheriff Martin Pace says that the water is no where near the 2011 flood, when it reached 57.1 feet on the Vicksburg Gauge........

Recently, U.S. Navy divers and specially trained handlers raised the first cannon from the Savannah River, as part of the recovery efforts of the CSS Georgia.  During the next several days, the remaining three cannons will be raised.

Navy divers, trained in the recovery of unexploded ordinance, have been bringing cannonballs up from the river bottom, guaranteeing they are being properly handled and preserved.

The raising of the cannon marks the first time that it has been above the surface of the river since the CSS Georgia sank.  The recovery plans include the raising of the vessel's casements later this year........

Towboat Operator, Paint Contractor Trading Blame In Eads Bridge Death........

The U.S. Coast Guard has reported that the towboat pilot was aware that his course was off center prior to his vessel striking a scaffolding suspended off of the Eads Bridge, causing a worker to fall to his death.

Equipment and antennas mounted atop the pilothouse hit the scaffolding, tearing a portion of it away.  The worker, identified as 24 year old James Pigue, fell to the towboat's deck.

Don Thomas, owner of Thomas Industrial says that the towboat was not in the river's channel.  Central Contracting and Marine, the owner of the towboat, claims that flooding, or the decision to suspend scaffolding from the bridge created a hazard to navigation.  General Contracting also says that Pigue wasn't wearing fall protection while he was sandblasting the bridge........

Boater Recommendation

Boaters:

With all the extra debris in the flood water all strainers should be checked. Engine, Generator and Air Conditioning strainers. Might as well check the water levels in your batteries too.

Ohio River Near Paducah, Kentucky

Barge Struck The "Brookport" Bridge Friday........

Early Friday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that a tow had struck the U.S. 45 bridge over the Ohio River, linking Paducah, Kentucky and Brookport, Illinois.

Reportedly, the Motor Vessel Dan Elder was pushing 15 empty barges, when a gust of wind pushed the tow into the right descending pier of the river channel section of the bridge.

Inspectors checked out the bridge, and cleared it for traffic.  The tow was pulled to the shoreline to inspect for damage.  The second barge from the front received a 4 inch dent on it's starboard bow........

Towboat Strikes Eads Bridge, Man Killed........

Shortly after 3 pm Thursday, a southbound tow vessel struck the Eads Bridge, killing a man.  Reportedly, the impact caused the man to fall from scaffolding where he was vacuuming, and land on the tow vessel.

The bridge had been closed to traffic for a short time.  MetroLink had used shuttles to transport their riders between the East St. Louis and Busch Stadium stops, until train service resumed just before 5 pm.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.  According to OSHA, the man had been employed by Thomas Industrial Coatings, who had three employees die from falls in 2006........

Barge Shipping

High Water Causing Problems For Farmers, Barge Shippers........

The recent heavy rainfall is continuing to cause problems for farmers and river shippers, as the high river levels are making it difficult, if not impossible to load grain on barges along the Illinois River.

On the Mississippi River, barge traffic has been restricted.  The U.S. Coast Guard has lowered the limits on haw many barges a towboat can push down the river, and requiring daylight only navigation in some areas.

According to Rick Calhoun, the president of Cargill's barge line, the cost of navigation has increased, as it is taking more boats to do the same amount of work........

River Des Peres

The Coming Fish Kill Brings Smelly Problem........

Residents of south St. Louis around the River Des Peres are preparing for a very smelly future.  After the Mississippi River rose, Asian carp, and other fish swam up the River Des Peres in search of food.

As the river falls, a considerable number of those fish will will be trapped.  The waters will become stagnant causing the fish to die, leaving behind a stinky mess.

The Metropolitan Sewer District, who owns the southern portion of the River Des Peres, says that they have a plan in place, but before they can implement that plan, the water must be low enough so workers are safe........

Kentucky Lake

Barge Rubbed Eggner's Ferry Bridge........

Late Wednesday night, the Eggner's Ferry Bridge had traffic reduced to one lane after a barge scraped a pier.  There is a section of the new bridge being built adjacent to it.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reported that a passing tow with 15 barges rubbed against concrete forms and piping for one of the new span's piers, and scrubbed a pier on the existing bridge.

Back in 2012, a 322 foot section of the Eggner's Ferry Bridge was hit, and dropped into Kentucky Lake by the 8200 ton cargo ship Delta Mariner........

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces that a BWI sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on Lake of the Ozarks between now and the end of July. The goal of this enforcement effort is to detect and apprehend the impaired boat operator; therefore, leading to a safe and enjoyable experience for the boating public.

Boaters who come across a checkpoint on the water can expect that they may be stopped. Officers will make brief contact with the operator and perform a basic safety check of the boat’s equipment. If the officer suspects the operator to be under the influence of intoxicants and/or drugs, they will be asked to submit to a field sobriety test. All efforts will be made to keep the process as brief as possible. The Missouri State Highway Patrol appreciates the public’s cooperation.

"Boating is a fun recreational activity, but safety must be a priority," stated Captain Turner. "Always make sure each boat passenger has a life jacket available, and never operate any type of watercraft after consuming alcohol or drugs."

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

More Information About the Pictures of the Day On Wednesday..... was sent to us by Capt'n Darryll Weil who hails out of the yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat.... After You

Bill:

Saw the pictures of the barge tow on www.riverbills.com today (7-15-15). Captain Michael Coyle of the towboat "Twyla Luhr" (the towboat that will be at Grafton for the Towboat Festival) posted some pics last week of the same tow as it passed him down river. Here is his description of it.

Darryll

"Here's something you rarely see on the river this far north. This feller just passed us down here at Grays Point after stopping to make a crew change. Its a small seagoing tug pulling 2 barges of equipment destined for a refinery in Joliet, Il. on Upper Illinois River. He's pulling them on what's called a "short hawser " That's the tow line from stern of the boat to each corner of the lead barge. The boat faced up to the stern is called the " tail boat " He controls the swing of the tow & assists in steering. A tail boat is necessary in a river with current. They are northbound pushing against the current."

 Kayakers Around St. Louis Harbor

Take Out Point...

Boat Ramp Alton Marina

John Patrico and RiverBill picked up Cody, Tyler and Ilan on Monday afternoon at the boat ramp under the Clark Bridge to portage them around St. Louis.  The Mississippi River at St. Louis was "Closed."

Look at those Eagles Landing T-shirts

Loading Kayaks

Loading Kayaks

The guys loaded all three of their kayaks into John Patrico's company van and secured them in place. We are ready to portage them around St. Louis, but not before we show them some St. Louis landmarks!

First Stop... Fast Eddies Bon Air

The guys were hungry so we took them to Fast Eddies Bon Air just a few blocks from the boat ramp where we picked them up.

John has a reserved spot in front of the building ! (So he Says)

The drinks were cold, the food was good, the conversation was great and we missed a torrential rainstorm that came through the area.

Next Stop... The Penthouse

We showed the guys the St. Louis arch.  They got their pictures as we drove by, then off to Sauget, IL to the Penthouse.

Hey ! ....The guys had been on the river for almost a month and John and RiverBill thought they would like to see some pretty ladies dance.

We are not sure who is driving the J. Patrico Heating and Cooling van at this point.

Next Stop..  Sr. Marie Charles Park

Located next to the Mississippi River

 on South Broadway

Waiting on the slow, slow, slow, slow moving train at the entrance to

Sr. Marie Charles Park.

File Photo

Nice park, but the terrain was to steep to put the kayaks in here...

Next Stop..  A quarry south of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge

No Pictures.... We got run out by the security guard !

(They do have a great ramp area)

Next Stop..  Cliff Cave Park

Located on the Mississippi River just south of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge

Many paths through the tall grass led down to the river

After may tries we finally found an acceptable access to the river. A long haul with the kayaks and supplies, it had a 3 or 4 foot drop of down to a cluttered spot on the river bank. It had a small protected pool of water out of the fast moving current of the flooded Mississippi River.

Kayaks unloaded and carried down the path to the river along with some new supplies

One Kayak in the water and then the other two.  All loaded up and ready to go.

Tyler, Ilan and Cody back in their kayaks in the Mississippi River about 6:30PM.

This picture was taken just before the headed out into the swift current and quickly headed down river in search of an overnight camping spot.

River Des Peres

Carp Have Invaded The River Des Peres........

Over the past several weeks, record levels of rainfall has transformed normally dry areas into wetlands, and flash flooding transformed creeks into swirling rapids.

The normally dry River Des Peres has been able to get in on the act as well, thanks to the runoff, and the backwater rising from the Mississippi River.  Thousands of Asian carp have invaded the River Des Peres, seemingly unaware that it's flow is only temporary.

The Mississippi River is expected to fall below flood stage on Friday, lowering the River Des Peres as well.  As a result, a lot of fish will be left high and dry.  While the majority of the casualties will be carp, gar and other small fish will end up stranded as well........
