Metro East Levees

Levee District Prepping For More Upgrades........

Even though there is work to be done on projects intended to bring the Metro East Levees up to minimum federal flood protection rules, levee officials are already preparing for the next phase.

Last month, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council voted to put together a bond financing package, that when combined with $15 million in savings from existing projects, could add up to $80 million for additional work.

Missouri State Highway Patrol news Release

Missing Floaters Located In Ozark County

Missing Floaters Located In Ozark County

At 10:05 p.m. on July 6, 2015, Troop G Headquarters received a report of three adults and three children, who were floating in tubes on the North Fork of the White River in Ozark County and had failed to show up at their designated take out point. A search of the area was conducted by a trooper and a deputy of the Ozark County Sheriff’s Department. Foggy conditions made a search by boat impossible. At around 11 p.m., an Ozark County deputy located two adults at the trail head near Hammond Camp. They indicated the rest of the party was on a gravel bar near Rainbow Springs, so the trooper and deputy responded to that location. The nearest access point was over a quarter mile away, so the trooper and deputy made their way to the group by wading through the river, sometimes in chest deep water. The officers then carried the children back to safety.

Captain Mark G. Inman, commanding officer of Troop G said, “During the last few weeks, this type of scenario has played itself out several times in the Troop G area. Recent rains have caused area streams to remain at high levels. High water and weather conditions are factors to consider when planning a float trip or any outing on the river.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

Went for a "hot lap" on the river Sunday afternoon & came upon this floating tree above Lake Center. Boys being boys & it being Tim Satchwell's birthday...he & Rick Phillips decided to jump on & go for a ride, Huck Finn style. They made it down to Grafton before us girls squashed their fun. Just goes to show you never know what you will see on the river!

Riverfront Plans Revealed At An Open House........

Wednesday afternoon, the Great Rivers Greenway Trails district hosted an open house to report on progress made on reimagining St. Louis' northern riverfront.

The proposed plans include apartments, fountains, grassy terraces, business incubators, and a floating beer garden, which would be hemmed in by a network of trails and parks, adjacent to the Mississippi River.

The open house was held at the Central Library downtown, and the open house planners were surprised by the turnout.  By 6 pm, at least 150 people had toured the walk-through presentation........

News Release From BoatUS

VIDEO: Two Common Chores for Diesel Boat Owners
ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 8, 2015 – They are the lasting workhorse of many a cruising or sailing vessel, the inboard diesel engine. Some say they have a reputation for being finicky while others swear by their never-ending reliability. Either side you choose, there are two common chores that the owners of diesel engine boats need to be able to easily perform. Changing a diesel fuel filter and bleeding the fuel line of air are topics shown in two new helpful “how-to” videos by BoatUS Magazine. They can be found at:

How to Change a Fuel Filter on a Marine Diesel: https://goo.gl/IC6pz0

How to Bleed a Marine Diesel Engine: https://goo.gl/9P8bdq

“Bleeding a diesel engine of air is a misunderstood ‘black art’,” said BoatUS Magazine Associate Editor Mark Corke, “But it’s very easy to learn when we show you how to do it.” The videos are part of the magazine’s Practical Boater series that offers skills building, techniques and best practices to get the most out of boating.

River History....

July 9, 2009 in River History

The Army Corps of Engineers announced the completion of the closing of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet on this day in 2009.

The channel was built in the 1960s to provide a shipping shortcut from the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. It was blamed for the loss of thousands of acres of protective wetlands over the years and many elected officials and residents of the area loudly blamed the waterway for the massive flooding that decimated the region after Hurricane Katrina.

The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet was blocked by dumping 352,000 tons of rock into the waterway at a cost of $11.2 million. Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel Co. of Arkansas spent six months to build the barrier. The barrier stretches 950 feet across the MRGO channel, and has a 12-foot top crown, a 450-foot bottom width, and stands 7 feet above the water level.

Temporary Levee Leaves Some Stranded........

A temporary levee that was intended to keep the Mississippi River out of West Alton, Missouri has ended up leaving some residents surrounded by flood water.

West Alton Mayor Willie Richter says that they use both a permanent and temporary levees to protect the city.  The temporary levee was built over Highway 94, which had flooded.

Unfortunately, the location of the levee has left a group of people at the Harbor Point Yacht Club isolated.  Richter said that the residents are trapped in there, that they live in the clubhouse area, and get in by boat........

Water Skiing History....

On July 8, 1925 in Water Skiing History

Ralph Samuelson, the man who invented water skiing and the water ski, became the first ever water ski jumper. He smeared cooking lard on a half-sunken diving platform and then proceeded to make a jump.

Ralph Wilford Samuelson

(July 3, 1904–August 28, 1977) was the inventor of water skiing, which he first performed in the summer of 1922 in Lake City, Minnesota, just before his 19th birthday. Samuelson was already skilled at aquaplaning—standing on a board while being pulled by a powerboat—but he hoped to create something like snow skiing on the water. Lake Pepin, a wide portion of the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin, was the venue for his experiments.

Missouri State Highway Patrol
News Release

Woman Rescued From Flood Waters In Taney County

At 11:15 a.m. on July 7, 2015, Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D marine operations troopers conducted a joint water rescue operation with representatives from the Western Taney County Fire Department, Branson Fire Department, and the Taney County Ambulance. Emergency personnel rescued a Branson resident from her vehicle after it was swept off Animal Safari Road into Fall Creek, outside Branson, Missouri. In order to rescue the 30-year-old female driver from the vehicle and bring her to safety, emergency personnel positioned themselves in the rushing water approximately 75 feet from shore. The incident began as the woman attempted to cross the flooded roadway when it was swept away.

The Patrol encourages motorists to never drive through water covered roads; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway. For their safety and that of their passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a road are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT. It is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them. If your vehicle would happen to become stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

For information regarding road closures please visit the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s website www.mshp.dps.mo.gov and click on the “road conditions” link.

Open House For North Riverfront Redevelopment Plans This Week........

On Wednesday, the Central Library downtown will be hosting an open house, during which city and regional officials will report on progress on a plan for redeveloping the riverfront north of downtown.

Back in November, the Great Rivers Greenway trails district had commissioned a $330,000 study of the old industrial sector.  The agency is hoping to revitalize the north riverfront trail, spurring growth, via businesses, homes, restaurants, and shops.

The study looked at 180 acres, covering the land between the Eads Bridge, and the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, and from the Mississippi River to Interstate 44........

Barge Strikes A Bridge, Sinks In The River........

Lieutenant Takila Powell of the Marine Safety Unit of the U.S. Coast Guard reports that on Saturday, a barge struck a pier of the railway bridge crossing the Mississippi River near Thebes, Illinois.

Reportedly, a tow vessel was pushing 25 barges downstream.  24 of the barges were loaded with grain.  As the tow was passing under a rail bridge, the last barge struck a pier, and broke loose.  The barge began to sink just downstream of the rail bridge.

On Monday, a marine surveyor and salvage company were checking the barge to determine the best way to remove it.  The barge has been marked with a buoy to alert river traffic........

St. Charles Dealing With A Driftwood Logjam........

There is a driftwood logjam along the St. Charles riverfront, which has been growing ever since the Missouri River crested two weeks ago at 31.7 feet.  The driftwood logjam is caught between the former Goldenrod Showboat's barge and walkways.

According to Daryl Hampel, the St. Charles Street Supervisor, a contractor will come in with barges that will get the driftwood moving again.  They may try to push some of the driftwood, or churn it up with their propellers.

St. Charles last faced a large logjam back in 2013.  The walkways were damaged by logs during that event.  Earlier this year, the city began working of getting the barge and walkways removed........

News Release From BoatUS

New Online Course For Boaters: All About Marine Radio

ANNAPOLIS, MD, July 6, 2015 – If you put 10 boaters in a room with a working marine VHF radio, how many could call for help, call a friend, or share a navigational hazard with nearby boaters? Chances are the most important piece of safety gear aboard a boat is the least understood. A partnership with the US Power Squadrons and BoatUS Foundation aims to improve boaters’ knowledge with the new online course, All About Marine Radio, offered at BoatUS.org/courses. The course shows how to use standard VHF radios as well as newer Digital Selective Calling (DSC) VHF radios and is great for novices and experienced boaters. Taken from the comfort of home, the course is $24.95.

“From calling a mayday to requesting a marina slip, it’s the boater’s VHF radio that is the most reliable way to communicate and it is the only piece of equipment that can get those closest to a boat in distress to respond quickly,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Education Amanda Suttles Pérez.

All About Marine Radio teaches how to choose the best radio for your boating lifestyle and how to get the most use out of it. The online course will show some simple rules to follow when you’re using a marine VHF radio plus how to:

• Determine which features you want in a marine radio for your type of boating
• Make and receive radio calls, including what channels to use
• Obtain and use an Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number for your boat
• Call for help in all kinds of emergencies
• Ensure that your transmissions are understandable
• Simple rules to follow when using your radio

Joining BoatUS for $24 annually lowers the course’s price to $19.96 – the same price offered to US Power Squadrons, Canadian Power Squadrons, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Great Lakes Cruising Club members. More information on BoatUS membership benefits can be found at BoatUS.com/membership.
