Heya Bill
Water is almost to the predicted crest level. Isn't going to get into Longshot, but is over back drive. Andy and his crew are hard workers, am sure they'll have everything up and running fast.

Palisades is getting really flooded as usual.

My place is still dry upstairs, hopefully it'll stay that way.

See you on the river soon

Flooding Around The Riverbend

Businesses And Roads Closed By Flooding.......

The already high river levels and continual rainfall are conspiring to cause issues for several municipalities and businesses throughout the Riverbend.

Flooding issues have developed in the region, and this has caused several businesses and roadways to close.  Sections of Illinois Route 3, Illinois Route 100, and two lanes of the Clark Bridge were shut down Monday due to flooding.

The National Weather Service has predicted that the Mississippi River at Grafton will crest at 29.5 feet, just above the major flooding designation.  The Mississippi River at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 is forecast to crest at 31.8 feet Tuesday as well........

The Lincoln County Health Department was providing free tetanus shots for first responders and flooding victims at the school as well.

Donations are being accepted at Winfield City Hall.  Needed supplies include drywell, paint, water, cleaning supplies, and food are being collected.  Flood Victims may receive a free hot meal at that location as well........

Grafton's Businesses and Residents Dealing With The Flooding........

The residents and businesses in Grafton are working to carry on, as they do during every flood situation.  Chris Sullivan, Grafton's Chief of Police, says that the people of Grafton "deal with it".

Sullivan said that the residents and businesses are doing what is necessary.  He adds that what will happen over the Fourth of July Weekend will be dependant upon the river levels.

The U.S. Geological Survey says that as of Monday at 4:36 pm, the Mississippi River At Grafton was at 29.5 feet.  Grafton's flood stage is at 18 feet.  The current crest forecast is 29.5 feet on Wednesday, July 1, however, this doesn't consider any additional rainfall........

Two Locks Shut Down Due To High Water........

Thanks to the high water levels along the Mississippi River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shut down the locks at Clarksville and Winfield.

Lock No.25 at Winfield and Lock No.24 at Clarksville were closed on Sunday.  Officials believe that the locks at Alton and Granite City will remain open.  Earlier this month, the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam on the Kaskaskia River was closed.

On Sunday, the Mississippi River crested at Clarksville just over 33 feet, which is considered to be at major flood stage.  On Monday, the Mississippi River at Winfield crested at just over 34 feet........

Riverbend Fireworks

Several Fireworks Displays Scheduled For This Weekend........

This weekend is the Fourth of July, and several municipalities throughout the Riverbend are preparing for fireworks displays.  On Friday, July 3, the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater will be hosting The Fireworks over the Mississippi display.

The President of Alton Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Brett Stawar says that the Mississippi River encroaching into Riverfront Park should not be an issue.   Stawar is recommending that spectators arrive early to get the viewing spots they want.

The fireworks display in Grafton have been cancelled on account of flooding.  Other fireworks displays include:

Fireworks in Brighton, in Schneider Park on July 3.  The festivities will begin at 5 pm, and fireworks will start at dusk.

Godfrey's Fireworks display will take place at Glazebrook Park on Saturday, July 4, at 9:15 pm.

Jerseyville's Fireworks Display will be held at the American Legion Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 4, at 9:20 pm.

Monday morning, Ardent Mills had some workers filling sandbags on their property  According to Alton's Fire Chief, Bernie Siebold, Ardent Mills had begun sandbagging operations last week, in order to keep the river away from the loading docks.

Siebold believed that the workers were doing supplemental sandbagging for Ardent Mills.  On Monday morning, water had flowed over the sidewalk at Ardent Mills.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the intersection of U.S. 67 and Illinois Route 100 closed Monday morning due to the rising Mississippi River.  As of 3:30 pm Monday, the Great River Road was closed between Alton and Clifton Terrace until further notice........

NEWS from BoatUS
Boat Owners Association of The United States

The Biggest Boating Weekend of the Year And You Don't Have Any Kids' Life Jackets?

ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 29, 2015 – The July 4th holiday is the biggest weekend on the water for boating and you don’t have enough kid’s life jackets for the little ones planning to come aboard for the fireworks and fun. What do you do?

Before you try putting a child in an adult life jacket, go to BoatUS.org/lifejacketupdate to find one near you. It’s the website for the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water’s kids’ Life Jacket Loaner Program that makes it easy to borrow a right-sized child’s life jacket for the day, afternoon, or weekend at no cost. Now, in addition to sponsoring over nearly 600 local, free life jacket loaner sites across the country, they’ve included over 900 other loaner program sites on the map to give parents and boaters more options.

“It’s the largest map of life jacket loaner sites in the nation,” said BoatUS Foundation Outreach Manager Alanna Keating. “Finding a loaner life jacket has never been easier, and we help prevent the biggest two mistakes, which is going without or putting a child in a life jacket that doesn’t fit.”

Each year, the Foundation loaner sites lend out life jackets over 140,000 times.

To find a right-sized kid’s life jacket near you, go to BoatUS.org/loanermap.

Mississippi River Flooding

Thousands Of Acres Of Crops Damaged By Flooding........

Thanks to a few weeks worth of heavy rains across America's Heartland, farm lands close to the Mississippi River in southern Illinois and Missouri have been damaged.

Southern Illinois farmer Kenny Bunselmeyer says that the flooding isn't the worst that he has seen, but this year's flooding will have a serious effect on farmers.

Floodwaters have damaged 200 acres of Bunselmeyer's corn and soybean crops, which will cost him an estimated $120,000.  He says that consumers won't likely see a bump at the market, but farmers that see flooding will be lucky to break even........

Dennis Ocello Memorial

Thank You

I would like to take a moment to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to everyone for joining us to celebrate Dennis ' life and love. It was a perfect display of the many carefree good time gatherings of friends and family that he so enjoyed throughout the years on and off of the Mississippi. As we sat around sharing stories of our experiences with Dago, I imagined him in all his glory sitting right along side of us being our great river mascot. While my kids and I reflected on our time with him, we remembered his most unique qualities, his fun spirit, generous nature, wealth of knowledge and wisdom, and respect for his beloved river, that I am forever grateful to have been a part of. So I thank you all again, for opening your arms and your hearts to me and my family as we miss him dearly and will humbly admit that your support and friendship has been nothing short of amazing. So, here is too many more good times and memories, and as Dago loved to say, "HOO-AH"

.... and a special thank you to those that organized, set up, and made this party such a great success...

Lower U.S. 67 Lanes Still Submerged........

Traffic on U.S. 67 is still traveling on the upper lanes from the Clark Bridge to Highway 94 in St. Charles County.  The lower lanes had shut down late Saturday due to flooding.

It now appears that the lower lanes will remain closed at least through the first part of the weekend.  Lisa Kuntz, Spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Transportation, says that she isn't able to predict when the lanes will be able to reopen.

Kuntz added that once the Mississippi River recedes, and the lower lanes become accessible once again, crews will have to clean up debris, and inspect the pavement to make sure it is safe to travel upon........

Crowd Gathers As Floodgates Installed.........

On Thursday afternoon, a bit of a crowd gathered to watch Hannibal Street Department crewmen install the city's five flood gates.  A few crewmembers quipped that they should have charged an admission fee.

The crowd swelled to about 35 onlookers.  One of the onlookers was Hannibal resident Cheryl Hudelson, who with her little white dog, Zuse, watched the gates being installed for the first time.

The director of Hannibal's Street Department, Rich Dauma says he has witnessed the gates go in about a hundred times.  Dauma credits the crane operator as the key to making the flood gate installation go off without a hitch........

Town Preparing For Flooding........

The Illinois River is on the way up in Beardstown, Illinois.  By Thursday afternoon, the river was at 26.2 feet, and according to the National Weather Service, the river is expected to crest at 27.2 feet by Saturday at noon.

As the Illinois River is on the way up, Beardstown is preparing for the possibility of damage.  There has been two sinkholes that have developed on Main Street, some 300 feet from the river.

The sinkholes are caused by the fluctuating water levels within the sewers beneath the roadway.  Gary Hamilton, the Beardstown Director of Public Works says that they are monitoring Main Street, as it is a major truck route........

NEWS from BoatUS
Vote For Your Favorite New Life Jacket Design by July 8

ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 25, 2015 – If you’ve ever worn a life jacket and thought how its design or styling could be better, now is your chance to be heard. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the Personal Floatation Device Manufacturers Association are asking boaters to vote now for their favorite new life jacket design entry in the 2015 “Innovation in Life Jacket Design Competition” at Facebook.com/BoatUSFoundation or BoatUS.org/design/vote. The public has until July 8 to submit their vote and is encouraged to vote once a day for their favorite design.

The goal of the competition is to rethink a 100-year-old design, seek out the newest technologies and design innovations and develop interest in newer, more versatile life jackets. Design entries are judged on the following criteria: innovation, wearability, value/affordability, reliability, versatility and practicality.

Of the nearly 250 contest submissions from as far away as Mongolia and New Zealand, 14 were selected for public voting. “The judges want to know what the boating public is looking for in a new life jacket design or style, and your vote will also factor into the final overall score,” said BoatUS Foundation Outreach Manager Alanna Keating.

At stake is a $10,000 first prize, $3,000 for second and $2,000 for third. Winners will be announced at the International Boatbuilders Exhibition trade show in Louisville, KY in September.

For more information, go to www.BoatUS.org/design.
