The Mississippi River Is Nearing Flood Stage........

As of Monday afternoon, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri reached 30 feet, and it is expected to keep rising on into the weekend.

According to Mary Lamm, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service at Paducah, Kentucky, the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau will steadily rise to around 35 feet by Saturday morning.  Cape Girardeau's flood stage is 32 feet.

Lamm says that the flooding is considered to be minor at this point.  She added that the reason the river is rising is the water coming from the Missouri River, and the heavy rainfall in the Upper Mississippi River Valley........

Bill,

Today (06-08-14) was a very fun day at the Con Trios Champagne Brunch. We thought the highlight of the day was to see if the courtesy dock would hold all the boats tied up.

Come to find out the highlight of the day was actually when the band announced that a tree was floating down the slough and that the boat owners might want to move their boats.

Well with that said we had many people running down to the dock to see if the tree could be pushed out of the way of the boats, that almost happened. It got caught under Rick Phillips house boat. Long story short, Carl Tiemann, Darrel Weil and Brian Hamm went out and Lassoed the tree root and pulled it from under Ricks boat - the boat were saved and no damaged occurred.

Grafton Marina's Lots Included In City's Plans........

As the City Council of Grafton works to overhaul the city's parking lot plan, and the green space Adopt A Lot program, they are re-evaluating the privately owned Grafton Marina's leased lot situation.

Recently, the Grafton City Council voted to terminate the lease of 18 parceled lots that the Grafton Marina owners, Joe and Jan DeSherlia and DeSherlia Enterprises LLC. has held since 2006.

The term of the lease was $1 per year for all 18 lots.  Some of the lots are green space, which the city wants DeSherlia to adopt, as opposed to lease.  So far, DeSherlia and the city have yet to come to an agreement........

The Motorboat Act of 1910 finally established a creditable boating safety program. The act required boats to be equipped with navigation lights, whistles, fire extinguishers, and life preservers. Although enforcement was still a problem, the number of accidents immediately declined.

On Sunday, 44 year old Daniel Scott Nelson of Davenport, Iowa crashed his personal watercraft into five people, four of which were children.  Nelson faces multiple charges, including speed and distance violations, as well as failing to provide adequate safety gear for the 10 year old PWC passenger.

Nelson, who had just purchased the PWC the day before, was reportedly approaching a dock at between 15 and 25 MPH, when he hit the dock, breaking a cleat, and sending the people on the dock into the water on the other side.

According to Iowa Department of Natural Resources conservation officer, Jeff Harrison, Nelson hit the five people on the dock and they went into the water on the opposite side of the dock.  Harrison added that luckily, there was nothing on the far side of the dock, or the victims would have been smashed and pinned........

Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Matt Walz was sworn in as a 'state member' of the National Boating Safety Advisory Council at the 93rd meeting of the council on May 28, 2015, in Washington D.C. The National Boating Safety Advisory Council is comprised of 21 members who are appointed and serve at the pleasure of the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The council provides advice and recommendations to that office through the commandant of the United States Coast Guard on matters relating to recreational boating safety.

Capt. Walz has served in marine law enforcement for a combined 25 years with the Missouri State Water Patrol and Missouri State Highway Patrol. He is currently serving as the assistant director of the Highway Patrol’s Water Patrol Division. In addition to his years of patrolling Missouri waterways, Capt. Walz commanded the Lake of the Ozarks region and served as the director of Training for the former Missouri State Water Patrol. In 2011, he assumed a Troop F staff position before transferring to his current position in the Field Operations Bureau at General Headquarters, Jefferson City, MO, in 2015.

Navy Vet Swimming The Length Of The Mississippi River........

On Saturday, Navy combat veteran Chris Ring, left Itasca State Park in Minnesota, as he began his effort to swim the length of the Mississippi River, from it's headwaters, to the Gulf of Mexico.

Ring is representing the group, Legacies Alive, and he intends to use this challenge as a way to connect as many Gold Star families, who have lost someone in the War of Terror.

Ring will be swimming approximately 16 mile per day on his journey which he calls the 2015 Legacy Challenge:  Swim For Their Sacrifice.  Ring says that the effort is not about the swim, but rather the families that Legacies Alive is honoring.

Portage des Sioux, Mo

News from the Portage 200 Committee

Plans are being finalized for Commemoration Day on Saturday, September 12, 2015 (Mark your calendars now) The Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1815 Commemoration is being sponsored by The City of Portage des Sioux and The Land Between the Rivers Historical Society with special guests of the Osage Nation, Kathryn Red Corn, former Director of the Osage Tribal Museum and Mr. Everett Waller, Chairman of the Osage Minerals Council, both from Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

Veterans Participated In Fishing For Freedom........

On Sunday, nearly 160 veterans turned out to the Mississippi River to participate in the 5th annual Fishing For Freedom event.  Shawn Smith, a Fishing For Freedom committee member, says that the importance of the event is to give back to the veterans.

Volunteer boaters donated their time and boats to take each warrior out on the water.  Smith says that there were no problems finding volunteers for the event.

Volunteer Andrew Ludwig says that it is important to give back to those who fought for freedoms, and believes that the Fishing For Freedom event is the perfect way for him to honor them........

Bids Are Being Accepted For Levee Repairs........

The levee in Grand Tower may soon be getting it's first major facelift in nearly 70 years, as officials are now accepting bids for necessary repairs.

Officials in Grand Tower say that this project was started when a section of the levee failed in June of 2013.  A temporary patch was quickly installed, but now a permanent solution is in the works.

Grand Tower Mayor, Mike Ellett says that the deteriorated drain pipes that caused the levee to fail only carried a 50 year lifespan, which was up in 1997........

Woman Embarks On Solo Pacific Ocean Crossing........

On Sunday, Orlando, Florida native Sonya Baumstein shoved off in her custom designed rowboat on a solo journey across the Pacific Ocean.  The vessel is a 23 foot long rowboat weighing in under 660 pounds.  Baumstein calls her boat Icha, which is an abbreviation of an Okinawan phrase that means "Once we meet, we're family".

Baumstein began her 6,000 mile trip rowing out of the port of Choshi, Japan, and is now paddling toward San Francisco, California.  She hopes to complete the journey by late September.

There have only been three other rowboats to tackle this trip, and a woman has never done it alone.  The 29 year old athlete has already rowed the Atlantic to the Caribbean........

Politics and The Metro East Levees........

According to an op/ed piece posted on bnd.com, Project Labor Agreements are very important to the political leadership in the Metro East, so much so, that they refused federal funding for restoring the Mississippi River levees.

Reportedly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had funding available in fiscal year 2014 for the levee work in Wood River and East St. Louis, but those funds were relegated to another portion of the state.

Allegedly, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council would not partner with the Corps, as the district wanted a union-friendly PLA included in the contract.  The Corps said that they were willing to allow PLAs, but they couldn't require them........

Fishy Tales From Decatur, Alabama

Shark Found In The Tennessee River........

On Tuesday, a family reported that they had found a dead shark at the Tennessee River in Morgan County, Alabama.  Wildlife officials do not think that the shark had gotten in the river on it's own.

According to Thom Demas, the Curator of Fishes at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, the three foot shark appears to be a spiny dogfish shark.

Alabama Wildlife Conservation Officer Jay Lowery, the shark was likely caught and killed elsewhere, and placed there on purpose.  Lowery added that this type of shark is not found in freshwater........

Engineering Firms Interested In Offering Riverfront Input........

There are three engineering firms that had expressed interest in working on some preliminary work on Hannibal's riverfront for the Hannibal Parks& RecreationDepartment.

Andy Dorian, the director of the Parks & Recreation Department says that the firms will be vetted, and then a firm will be selected.  At that point, negotiations will begin to determine the scope of the riverfront project.

Once the terms have been agreed upon, a contract will head to the City Council for approval.  There will be much more input needed before any final decisions are made regarding the eastern portion of Hannibal's riverfront........

Missouri State Highway Patrol
NEWS RELEASE

Missouri State Highway Patrol Joins Operation Dry Water

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol's participation in Operation Dry Water. Operation Dry Water is a national campaign in which marine law enforcement officers from across the country coordinate special patrols during the last weekend in June to keep our waterways safe from boaters operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Troopers will focus their efforts over the weekend of June 26-28, 2015, to detect and apprehend intoxicated operators.

Missouri boat operators found to have a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater will be arrested for boating while intoxicated. Intoxicated boat operators endanger themselves, their passengers, and other boaters utilizing our many waterways.

Last year, 585 local, state, and federal agencies participated in a weekend long event of heightened BWI enforcement known as Operation Dry Water. Officers removed 318 intoxicated boat operators from the water. In addition, law enforcement officers made contact with over 146,000 boaters concerning BWI or boating safety enforcement and awareness. From 2009 to 2014, over 1,800 BWI operators have been removed from the water by law enforcement officers during the Operation Dry Water weekends.

In 2014, Missouri troopers arrested a total of eight people for boating while intoxicated, contacted 431 vessels and 1,390 boaters, and issued 72 boating violation summonses and 390 warnings on Missouri waterways. Marine operations troopers also issued 29 summonses for non-boating violations during the 2014 Operation Dry Water weekend. Special enforcement operations will continue throughout the summer months. Boaters are reminded that designating a sober skipper is always the safest bet if alcohol is going to be included in their boating experience.

Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock Closing For Good........

Next Wednesday, the Upper St. Anthony Falls Locks in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota will be closing for good.  A year ago, Congress passed legislation ordering the closure.

The lock closure is intended to prevent invasive Asian carp from heading further upstream along the Mississippi River.  Under the legislation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had one year to shut the lock down.

The Upper St. Anthony Falls Locks are the northern-most navigational structure along the Mississippi River.  During 2014, over 2,000 vessels and 535 commercial vessels passed through the lock........
