RiverBills Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Capt'n Jim Vedder who hails out of John's Boat Harbor

Hey Bill,

I had just put on a second pot of coffee here at the Redneck Yacht Club at Johns Boat Harbor this morning when Dennis came paddling by so I asked him to join for a cup of joe. He is going to be around Alton Pool for the next couple of days and will be heading further South on Thursday or Friday so I thought I'd let you know. Super nice guy from Minneapolis that has been doing the entire Missisippi in bits and pieces for the last year.

While we were talking he expressed an interest in my racing so I included a picture of the car I will be running at Watkins Glen International this weekend at the Chumpcar US Gran Prix. It's a real bucket list track and we should be bad fast there.

Keep up the great work on the Site and see ya on the river.

Jim Vedder

River History....

On May 20, 1804 in River History...

Meriwether Lewis arrived in St. Charles from St. Louis in preparation for their expedition, not by boat as William Clark did a few days earlier, but instead via St. Charles Rock Road.

FYI: St. Charles Rock Road is the current name of what was the first road to traverse present-day St. Louis County, Missouri between St. Louis and St. Charles

(source Wikipedia Encyclopedia )

On May 20, 1927 in River History...

The building of the Delta Queen and her identical twin boat, the Delta King was completed on May 20, 1927. The construction of the boats started in 1924 on the River Clyde at the William Denny & Brothers Ltd., in California Dumbarton, Scotland and then assembled at Banner Island Shipyard in Stockton.
William Denny & Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton, Scotland built the boat's machinery. Krupp Stahlwerke AG, Germany forged the paddlewheel shaft and the cranks.

Battery-powered Car and Passenger Ferry Enters Service

The world’s first battery powered car and passenger has entered service in Norway. It runs across Sognefjord between Lavik and Oppedal, Norway

The ferry uses 150 kWh per route, which is equal to the amount of electricity used in  three days in a standard Norwegian household.  The ferry has one lithium-ion battery on board and one at each pier to serve as a buffer. Each battery pack on the ferry is equal to 1,600 standard car batteries

There are another 50 other routes in Norway where battery-operated vessels could be put into service.

Inflatable Life Jackets: The Growing Trend in Boating Safety - A live demonstration

Boaters should know that today’s life jackets come in all shapes and sizes from comfortable inherently buoyant styles to inflatable suspenders and belt packs. Life jackets are no longer only available in the bulky, cumbersome models of years past and knowing what options are available and what model works best for your water activity can mean the difference in keeping you and your loved ones safe in the event of an emergency. Media representatives may be able to better inform their audience by providing a live demonstration with the assistance of a trained professional that shows how to properly fit a life jacket and how each model provides life-saving support. There are even life jackets for our four-legged friends. To view and download a video on inflatable life jackets, visit safeboatingcampaign.com.

Vessel Safety Checks

EVEN EXPERIENCED BOATERS NEED A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK!
15 minutes could save your life and the life of your family

A Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat − ranging in locations from boat to your driveway. A vessel safety check usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending upon the size of your boat

What's In it For Me?
Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard / Auxiliary Decal that informs:
•Coast Guard / Auxiliary
•Harbor Patrol
•Sheriff's & Police
•other boating law-enforcement & safety agency's

that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws during a safety check for that year. Best of all every Vessel Safety Check is 100% Free of charge!

What if I Don't Pass?
If your boat does not pass, no citation is issued at that time. Instead, you are provided a written report in how to correct any discrepancies.

Protect Your Skin

RIverBender.com published a good article about screening your skin from the sun today.  Your skin is your body's largest organ... keep it safe.

According to the article, "research shows that sunscreens have protective benefits against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause precancerous skin lesions and skin cancer (1-3). An Australian trial found that the regular use of sunscreen also reduces the incidence of malignant melanoma, the deadliest of skin cancers."

"Sunscreen may also prevent skin changes such as darkening and wrinkle development, called photodamage or photoaging."

Tiger Docks

Chesterfield’s Newest Park Features Tiger Docks®

CHESTERFIELD, MO (May 18, 2015) – Hundreds of area residents attended the recent grand opening of River’s Edge Park, including members of the Tiger Docks® team, who saw their products in use by families of all ages and interests.

Fishing enthusiasts, paddleboarders, nature-lovers, kayakers, and more soaked in the warm sun and enjoyed mild temperatures as they tested the waters in the City of Chesterfield’s new River’s Edge 188-acre passive park with a 38.5-acre lake. The floating dock, ramp and benches at the water’s edge were all manufactured and installed by Tiger Docks.

“We are doing more and more of these ADA community docks,” said Nick Davis, Tiger Docks president. “The 5-foot wide, 40-foot long hand-railed aluminum bridge at River’s Edge provides a gangway ample enough for wheelchairs, strollers, and families holding little ones’ hands. The 12’x16’ floating platform offers room for any number of water activities and is finished with Trex ‘Rope Swing’ composite decking, one of our most popular decking products.”

RiverBills Picture of the Day.... was ent to us by Jessica mckay who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis...

Bill:

Happy weekend! We started ours with a rainy dock party. We did a little rain dance, and once the storm stopped, we chanced a ride. The river was so smooth! We only saw a few other boats. I snapped a pic of this rainbow on our way back to the dock. We tried to find our new boat money at the end of it, but another river rat must've gotten to the pot of gold before us!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Bill

Had a great day in New Athens today for the drag boat races! It's a small field but the racing has been very competitive. Little John's Motorsports has a fun crew of supporters and is sitting in the number 1 qualifier position for Sunday's racing.

Driver John Morris had great reaction times of 0.026 and 0.034 sec and the boat is dialed in with solid runs of 9.02, 9.03 and 9.05 sec in the Top Eliminator 9.0 sec class.

Racing starts at noon on Sunday. Come out and enjoy a beautiful day on the Kaskaskia River, Smitty's Marina in New Athens, Illinois!!

Take a Safe Boating Course

Seventy percent of recreational boating accidents are caused by operator factors —such as failure to pay attention, carelessness, recklessness, inexperience, excessive speed, and failure to watch for hazards.

Boating safety courses are available, inexpensive, and quick—a great way for you to learn safety and the rules of the road.

Missouri State Highway Patrol News Releas

Memorial Day Weekend

Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime should use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.

The Memorial Day weekend is also an unofficial start to the boating season. During the 2014 Memorial Day weekend, there were seven boating crashes which included two injuries; no one drowned over last year’s holiday weekend. Troopers arrested 20 people for boating while intoxicated. Boating is a great pastime and troopers want everyone to enjoy themselves. Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a lifejacket, and obey the law regarding safe operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Never operate a boat while you are impaired; never ride with an impaired operator.
“Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers will be available to assist you during the long holiday weekend should you need us.” said Colonel J. Bret Johnson. “Please do your part. Whether you’re on the highway or on the water, be courteous and pay attention. If alcohol is part of your plan, don’t operate a vehicle or vessel. It truly is that simple. We want all of you to have a safe and enjoyable summer beginning with this holiday weekend.”

2nd Annual River Rat Catfish Classic

The 2nd Annual River Rat Catfish Classic took place this past weekend in Grafton, IL on Saturday and Sunday.  They had 29 boats out on the water, each with a maximum of four fishers and no more than six fishing poles.  The winner was determined by the highest combined weight of their best three fish.

No winner results yet, but the biggest catfish on Saturday was just a bit over 29 pounds !

The businesses in Grafton got behind the tournament by donating prizes. Grafton Marina went all out by letting the tournament pretty much take over the marina and they let the fishermen use the empty slips for their boats !

Fish sandwiches, made by Grafton's famous Joe Baecht, were on sale at the marina.

The money raised from the event will be go towards advertising for the city.

River History....

May 17, 1849  in River History

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Fire captain Thomas Targee sent orders for soldiers to use kegs of gunpowder to blow up buildings in order to create a fire-stop. His idea worked to an extent, but he was killed in one of the explosions

National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, Kicks Off with Reminder for Boaters to Always ‘Wear It!’
Wearing a life jacket is the simplest life-saving strategy for safe boating

What Do You Know About Life Jacket Safety?
Many people, even among the boating community, have false perceptions of life jacket safety. Media
representatives may consider interviewing boaters at a local park, lake, river or beach to ask the “Man on the
street” (or, in this case, “On the water”) simple life jacket safety questions. The given answers can then be
compared to the actual safety guidelines and laws.
1. How often should life jackets be tested for proper fit and buoyancy?
    A: Every year.
2. How many life jackets are boaters required to have on their boat?
    A: One for every person.
3. True or False, life jackets come in only one size and shape?
A: FALSE! Life Jackets come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors and materials.
4. True or False, life jackets can make it harder to swim if you capsize?
A: FALSE! 84 percent of those who drown, while boating, are not wearing a life jacket.
5. At what age can boaters use inflatable life jackets as an alternative to an inherently buoyant life jacket?
    A: 16 years old.

Sea Ray Sales Boost

According to a news article in TradeOnly Today, Brunswick Corp has seen a boost in sales in their Sea Ray line of pleasure boats.  The larger new Sea Ray products, such as the 650 Fly flagship that was introduced in 2014 at the Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach is making money for Sea Ray dealers and the Brunswick Corp.

Currently there is a lengthy backlog on orders for the boat and the customers are not having to take a stock boat. They are  ordering exactly what they want and the dealers are not having to discount the boats.  Plus, the dealers are not having to use their their floor space.

News Release

US Coast Guard releases 2014 Recreational Boating Statistics Report

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard Wednesday released its 2014 Recreational Boating Statistics, revealing boating fatalities that year totaled 610, the second-lowest number of yearly boating fatalities on record.

From 2013 to 2014, deaths increased from 560 to 610, an 8.9 percent increase, injuries increased from 2,620 to 2,678, a 2.2 percent increase and the total number of accidents increased from 4,062 to 4,064, a 0.05 percent increase. Even with these increases as compared to the record low year of 2013, 2012 to 2014 collectively set record lows for accidents, deaths and injuries.

The fatality rate of 5.2 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels reflected a 10.6 percent increase from the previous year's rate of 4.7 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational vessels. Property damage totaled approximately $39 million.

"We thank our partners for their work in boating safety, particularly for the Wear It! and other key outreach initiatives promoting life jacket use, boating education efforts, and Operation Dry Water activities. Together, we focus on the important role of life jacket use, navigational knowledge and safe, sober boating to prevent accidents," said Capt. Jon Burton, director of inspections and compliance at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters.

The publication states alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents; it was listed as the leading factor in 21 percent of the deaths. Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and alcohol use ranked as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents.

Where the cause of death was known, 78 percent of fatal boating accident victims drowned; of those drowning victims, 84 percent were not wearing a life jacket. Where boating instruction was known, 77 percent of deaths occurred on vessels where the operator had not received boating safety instructions. The most common types of vessels involved in reported accidents were open motorboats, personal watercraft and cabin motorboats. The vessel types with the highest number of fatalities were open motorboats, canoes and kayaks.

The Coast Guard reminds all boaters to boat responsibly while on the water: wear a life jacket; take a boating safety course; get a free vessel safety check; and avoid alcohol or other impairing substance consumption.

Mississippi River at Winona, Minn

Angler Lands 70 Inch Lake Sturgeon

James Yehart of Brownsdale, Minn caught a 70 inch Lake Sturgeon just below Lock and Dam 3 on the Mississippi River near Winona, Minn Friday night.

The monster fish weighed more than 10 times the weight that the rod and reel was designed for and it pulled their 14 foot fishing boat a mile down river before they landed him.

Lake Sturgeon were nearly wiped out at one time by overfishing (caviar is sturgeon eggs) and habitat alteration from dams, but they have been staging a steady comeback in the Upper Midwest for decades.
