The Clean Up Continues After Diesel Leak........

The U.S. Coast Guard, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois EPA were back on the Mississippi River Sunday, while crews continued cleaning up the nearly 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel that had leaked into the Cahokia Canal Friday.

At around 8:45 am Friday. officials at the Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery found a leak in a pipeline between a storage facility and a barge loading dock.  The leak was stopped around 10 am.

By Friday afternoon, a statement was released that stated it was not certain how much fuel reached the Mississippi River, and efforts to clean up the spill would take several days........

There are more than 30 locations listed in the Mississippi River Valley Scenic Drive, which covers four Missouri counties, between Farrar, Missouri south to Commerce.

The Illinois River Was Blessed During Clean Water Celebration........

During the Clean Water Celebration in Peoria, Illinois, a Native American ceremony was performed to bless the Illinois River.  The Clean Water Celebration was the Sun Foundation's 22nd event.

The Ho Chunk leader, Hayna "White Beaver" Sine shared some of Peoria's Native American past, prior to lighting a peace pipe to bless the combined waters and the Illinois River.

Sine carried out the blessing in the form of a compass, east for human birth, south for the nourishment of the sun, west for the setting sun, and the end of planting season, and north for the snow, as well as the cool weather to restore the land........

Old Bend Bridge Nominated For Mo. Places In Peril........

Friends of the Old Bend Bridge are working to save the century-old span, in hopes that it will become part of a future trail system that links St. Louis, and Arkansas.

The span was built in 1916 to connect Pacific with the communities south of the Meramec River.  Now, Franklin County is constructing a new bridge that should open in 2016, and they plan to demolish the old bridge.

James Baughn, the founder of Bridgehunters.com, recently nominated the Old Bend Bridge for a Missouri Preservation Society "Missouri Places in Peril" designation........

Missouri River Endangered Species

Three Larval Stage Pallid Sturgeon Prove Fish Are Reproducing........

About a year ago, fisheries biologists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Missouri Department of Conservation caught three larval stage pallid sturgeon in the Missouri River.  This is the first time in the eight year history of the pallid sturgeon population assessment program that this has happened.

The inch long pallid sturgeon prove that the endangered species is spawning in the wild.  Since the pallid sturgeon embryos are free floating, it is thought that they were spawned on the Platte River, and they floated in the current down to Missouri.

The capture of only three larval pallid sturgeon over the eight years that the program has been going on illustrates the near impossibility of re-establishing a pallid sturgeon population capable of reproducing in the wild........

A Look Back At The Flood Of 1965........

When there is flooding along the Mississippi River, there is typically some warning, and time to prepare for it.  In 1965, Minnesota officials had a few weeks of warning, though they were worried that no amount of preparation would be enough.

Near-record snowpack and heavy rains in early April sent the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers upwards.  The forecast crest for the Mississippi River at Winona was between 20.5 and 21 feet, easily eclipsing the record high of 17.94 feet set in 1952.

Winona's flood defensive strategy was based upon the remnants of the dike system that was constructed to hold the 1952 flood at bay, however, crews were dispatched to make the floodwall significantly higher........

Family Tries To Keep The River Clean........

When people think of spring, spring cleaning may come to mind as well, even to people on the Mississippi River.  Each year, several families in Lansing, Iowa get out on the Mississippi River to pick up debris that has been left behind.

One example is the Galema family.  Karen Galema says that they end up with a boat full of junk, and that is a good feeling.  Her husband, Gary says that people toss it out just as quickly as you can pick it up.

Every spring for close to a decade, the Galema family hits the river to police up what doesn't belong there.  They ferry boatload after boatload to the dumpster, including barrels, old tires, and even a bowling ball........

NOAA Scientists Survey WW II Era Aircraft Carrier........

Recently, NOAA partnered up with the U.S. Navy, and private industry partners to document the condition and location of the USS Independence.  She was the lead ship in her class of light aircraft carriers that were instrumental in the U.S.' Pacific naval offense in World War II.

The Independence rests in 2,600 feet of water off of California's Farallon Islands.  According to NOAA scientists, the aircraft carrier is remarkably intact, with her hull and flight deck plainly visible, and with what looks to be an aircraft in the carrier's hangar bay.

The survey was conducted last month, using an autonomous underwater vehicle, Echo Ranger, provided by The Boeing Company, through an R&D agreement with NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.  Boeing also partnered with Coda Octopus to incorporate their 3D imaging sonar system, Echoscope, into the submersible........

From Wikipedia Online Encyclopedia

The USS Independence (CVL-22) was constructed by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation on the hull of a cruiser, and was commissioned in January of 1943.  She participated in the attacks on Rabaul and Tarawa prior to being torpedoed by Japanese aircraft.

She was repaired and refitted in San Francisco between January and July 1944.  Once back in service, she participated in many airstrikes in Luzon and Okinawa.  The Independence was in the carrier group that sank the remainder of the Japanese Mobile Fleet in the battle of Leyte Gulf.

In 1946, the USS Independence was assigned to the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests, and placed within a half mile of ground zero for the July 1 detonation.  She did not sink, however, she suffered damage from the blast.  The Independence participated in one more atomic bomb blast, prior to being decommissioned in August of 1946.  She was scuttled off the coast of San Francisco in January of 1951........

Low Head Dams Caused Hundreds Of Drownings........

For several decades, submerged dams helped harness the power of the river to operate grain mills, generate electricity, as well as store water in lakes and ponds as a buffer against drought.

Nowadays, these low head dams have been relegated to creating a wide, smooth, picturesque waterways that encourage city planners to change an urban river into recreational space.

The soothing cascades of water, gently rumbling over the dams, conceals a deadly trap.  Unsuspecting swimmers and boaters get dragged into the turbulent waters and drown.  An increase in drowning deaths has ignited a debate about whether these low head dams should be removed.........

Missouri River Management

Corps Reducing Runoff Forecast........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Basin Water Management Division has announced that they would be decreasing the annual runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa to 20.3 million acre feet of water.  This is approximately 80% of normal, and 4.9 million acre feet below average.

The lower forecast is because of below normal mountain snowpack, and the lack of snowpack in the plains regions.  Above normal temperatures, and below normal precipitation put the brakes on the mountain snowpack accumulation, and melted the snow in the plains.

Jody Farhat, chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that even though below normal runoff is expected, the upstream reservoirs are more than capable of meeting all authorized purposes for the year........

Chicago In Water Boat Show Cancelled........

Thursday, the National Marine Manufacturers Association announced that they will no longer present the Chicago-In-Water Boat Show, citing a lack of market demand.

The show originally was slated for June 11 - 14.  The NMMA released a statement saying that there wasn't enough demand in the marketplace, nor is there an available inventory to justify presenting the show.

The NMMA will instead shift their focus to the recently combined Progressive Insurance Chicago Boat, RV& Strictly Sail Show, which is an amalgamation of the former Chicago Boat, Sports, & RV Show, and Strictly Sail Chicago.  The next show is slated for January 14 - 18........

Corps Hold Flood Fight Exercise In Memphis........

On Thursday, over a hundred U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers were working on a flood fight.  Thankfully, the Mississippi River wasn't actually out of her banks.  This flood fight was an exercise at the Corps Ensley Yard, that focused on dealing with a levee breach during flood conditions.

Steve Barry, Chief of Readiness and Contingency said that the Memphis District holds these training exercises every few years that there is no significant flooding within the district.

Cory Williams, Chief of Geotechnical Engineering stated that there will be flooding in the future, and when it happens, they must be prepared to react to it........

Monongahela River near Braddock, PA

Teamwork averts disaster after barges break away........

When 17 barges broke free of their moorings on the raging, ice-filled Monongahela River, March 4, and lodged against a railroad bridge upstream of Locks and Dam 2 at Braddock, Corps navigation experts began to prepare for the worst. Previous breakaways incidents on the river had led to a loss of pool and severe, debilitating damage to navigation facilities when errant barges struck dams, rendering them partially inoperable.

The U.S. Coast Guard led the barge recovery effort and worked with the Corps, the National Weather Service, railroad officials and the navigation industry to monitor the situation and devise a plan. All were concerned that the barges would break loose of the railroad bridge and speed toward the four-gated Braddock Dam, less than a mile downstream.

St. Charles Has Purchased Bangert Island........

The City of St. Charles has purchased the 160 acre Bangert Island Wildlife Area for $350,000.  Now, there are some concerns about the long-protected wildlife area along St. Charles' riverfront.

Around 1950, the late Louis Bangert purchased the island, and it has been a wildlife oasis ever since.  Bangert's children wanted to keep the island that way, so in 1976, they donated the island to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Mayor of St. Charles, Sally Faith says that the island will stay natural.  Faith did admit that dredging the channel between the island and shore, and foot bridges over the channel are almost a certainty........

US Army Corps of Engineers

St. Louis District volunteers make a difference

Volunteers play an invaluable role in helping the St. Louis District Corps of Engineers meet our recreation and environmental stewardship program goals. Each year, volunteers give their time, expertise and resources to serve the more than 17 million visitors who enjoy St. Louis District managed lands and waters.

Corps of Engineers volunteers are people who want to give back to their communities and are interested in the work of the Corps natural resource management program. They are parents who want to bring their family out for a day of service together, retirees willing to share a wealth of knowledge and experience, outdoor enthusiasts wishing to create and maintain their favorite recreation opportunities, and concerned citizens of all ages interested in making meaningful contributions.

“Volunteers with the Corps of Engineers are a vital part of the natural resource management program. With limited resources, volunteers allow us to stretch our manpower, helping us to increase our interaction with visitors and the community,” Erin Hilligoss-Volkmann, park ranger and volunteer coordinator with the Rivers Project Office said.

Whether it is an environmental ethic, a love of parks, or enthusiasm for the outdoors, like-minded volunteers gather to share their passions while contributing to the good of their communities. They also provide a valuable service to the nation. During the 2014 fiscal year 3,231 total volunteers donated 74,961 hours in the St. Louis District. The dollar value of their service totaled $1,690,370. More than 186 partnerships also provide volunteers to help support the work of the St. Louis District – with the value of volunteer services being $699,952.

Volunteers serve as park and campground hosts, staff visitor centers, lead tours and educational activities, clean shorelines, restore fish and wildlife habitat, manage cultural resources, perform administrative duties, work with computers and other technical equipment, maintain Corps facilities, and much more.

If you are interested in finding volunteering opportunities with the Corps of Engineers, there are a numbers of ways to do so:
You may contact the lake or river project nearest to you; visit the Volunteer Clearinghouse, a national information center at www.corpslakes.us/volunteer/; you can also find opportunities on www.volunteer.gov; or call: 1-800-VOL-TEER (800-865-8337) for people interested in volunteering at Corps sites.

Lower Mississippi River Basin

Sediment Diversions Construct Land In Marshes........

On the west side of the Mississippi River's mouth, land loss has caused many of the birds, fish and animals that were once there to disappear.  The entire area has turned into a veritable dead zone.

As a testament to how sediment diversions create new land, and a thriving ecosystem, the east side of the Mississippi River's mouth is teaming with life.

Chris Macaluso, with the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, believes that using the Mississippi River's massive sediment load to recreate land is the key to reconstructing southeastern Louisiana's coastline.........

Inland Waterways

Mississippi River At Dubuque, Iowa

Spring Is Here, Ships Ready For The River........

This year, Nancy and Walt Webster, owners of Dubuque River Rides, are ready to hit the river.  Last spring, high waters kept the City of Dubuque from opening their floodgates, leaving the Webster's ships, the Spirit of Dubuque and Miss Dubuque locked in Dubuque's Ice Harbor.

Dubuque River Rides wasn't able to get their vessels on the river until May 28.  Nancy Webster recalls that many cruises had to be cancelled, and many people were disappointed.

It seems that the Websters will have a much better year this year.  On Monday. the National Weather Service reported that river levels were at 10.23 feet at Dubuque, nearly 7 feet below the flood stage of 17 feet........

During the Quincy City Council meeting on Monday, the Council agreed to upgrade the city's water treatment plant.  Approximately $3 million will be spent on replacing underground pipes and expanding the water treatment plant.

The plant will also be shifting from manually operated equipment to computer controlled equipment for more precise control over the chemical treatment of the water.

The equipment in use at the plant is more than 50 years old.  The last time major upgrades were made at the plant was in 1957, while general improvements were made in the 1980s and 1990s........
