Mississippi River At Granite City, Illinois

Tow Carrying Containers Arrived At America's Central Port........

On Thursday, Ingram Barge Company announced that their towboat M/V Miss Shirley arrived at America's Central Port in Granite City, with containers aboard the barges.  This was done as a demonstration to illustrate the viability of intermodal transportation on the river.

Dan Mecklenborg, Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Ingram Barge Company says that the highways and railways across the nation are running close to full capacity, while the inland waterways are very underutilized.  He added that there is plenty of room for increasing the amount of goods shipped via the inland waterways.

St. Louis Mayor, Francis Slay said that the Maritime Administration is predicting that the nation will be moving an additional 14 billion tons of cargo by 2050 to account for population growth.  Slay states that in order to meet this demand, the inland waterways should be utilized as a competitive option........

Mississippi River Near Moline, Illinois

Small Oil Spill Prompts Water Monitoring........

At around 8:45 am Thursday, officials were notified by Riverstone about a minor fuel spill from one of their barges.  The report prompted the fire department to place absorbent boom around the Moline water plant intake just down stream.

Enviromark quickly contained the spill, but the boom was placed as a precaution.  Dave Owens, Moline's water plant manager said that he could see a little sheen, and smelled a bit of fuel odor.

Owens says that an incident report he received from the Illinois EPA estimates that about 15 to 20 gallons of fuel spilled into the river.  He added that the sheen and smell dissipated in just under an hour, but the city will keep an eye on the water quality........

News Release From BoatUS

When Things Went Wrong, Teen Boater Kept Cool
The Case for Taking a Boating Safety Course

TAMPA, FL, April 9, 2015 – When 15-year Matt Mainzer decided to take a couple of friends out boating one Sunday afternoon in late March, little did he know that he would find himself and his friends floating in life jackets hanging on to the overturned hull of the teen’s 17-foot flats boat awaiting rescue. But according to Mainzer, his boating safety education would help him survive the day. A graduate of the no-cost online boating safety course provided by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, Mainzer said, ‘I wouldn’t have known what I needed to know if I hadn’t taken the boating safety course.”

Of course most folks would recognize Mainzer’s ability to keep his cool and being prepared as the reason for the young trio’s successful rescue. According to Mainzer, as water started to fill the boat through a rapidly widening crack in the hull - eventually causing the three teens to jump overboard - the quick thinking Mainzer had everyone in life jackets.

Using a cell phone in a waterproof case, Mainzer had also already advised a friend of their predicament initiating a rescue response. Once the three teens were floating in the waters of the Tampa Bay, he remembered keep everyone hanging on to the boat’s hull, of which only a small portion of the bow was above water. And his boating guests, two female teens, also remained calm and followed their captain’s instructions. Rescuers were on scene in minutes.

“Matt’s ability to stay calm and take decisive action saved them from harm,” said BoatUS Foundation President Chris Edmonston. “And I’m sure Matt’s parents instilled in him a great sense of respect for boating safety. But we are also very pleased he was able to take away some key knowledge from our online boating safety course, like always having life jackets accessible and ready to go. Once water started entering the boat they were easy to put on. So often boaters keep them hidden in places that essentially render them useless.”

Stains On The Arch Will Not Be Cleaned........

According to an engineering report released on Thursday, the mysterious staining on the surface of the Gateway Arch was caused by the original construction of the monument, in addition to residue accumulation, and graffiti.

The report was compiled by the firm, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, and it the result of decades worth of research into staining appearing on the Gateway Arch's stainless steel skin.

An official with the National Park Service has said that the dirt and staining will not be removed from the monument, as it is not economically viable........

Incremental Improvements

When we bought our Yamaha Zuma scooter a little over a year ago we were living at Stock Island Marina Village very near to downtown Key West. We wanted something to run from the marina to downtown, as the Yuba cargo bicycle was proving to be problematic, especially after a long day at Dante's pool or a visit to Duval Street.
We didn't even consider ever putting the scooter on the boat, but once I started thinking about what we would do with the scooter if we decided to move, or how the Zuma might fare during the potential high water of a hurricane, I measured the Zuma and found that it would fit perfectly in the cockpit of Swing Set. I bought some foldable motorcycle ramps and when we put the Zuma on the boat for our trip to Marathon, the procedure went flawlessly.
But after the first few trips between Marathon and Key West, we found that the Zuma is lacking on a couple of key points. The first point is that with both of us on the scooter the top speed is just meeting the 55 M.P.H. speed limit on A1A, and that's according to the speedometer. A stiff headwind reduces that figure by 5 to 10 M.P.H., and the "hump" on the Seven Mile Bridge seems like climbing over the continental divide on I-70. The other issue is the suspension: Our combined weight (ahem, over 300 pounds) is too much for the non-adjustable rear shocks. When we add Holly to the passenger list, the Zuma is struggling.
We don't want the added complications of an automobile, although I've been thinking about getting a compact car. I have to keep reminding myself that not only would having a car greatly inhibit our ability to pack up and go whenever we want, the parking in Key West for a car is expensive and hard to find. (Parking for a bike or scooter is free and abundant.)
I started wondering if Yamaha would start making a scooter to fit into the model void between the smaller scooters and their bigger bikes, like the 150cc Hondas and the 200cc Suzuki Bergman.
We had an appointment for our yearly checkups at our new primary care physician in Key West last week, and after our doctor visit I decided to pop into the local Yamaha dealer in Key West to see if any new models were on the drawing board.

Brokerage Sales Fall In March........

Following on the heels of a good month in February, boat brokerages in the U.S. reported selling only 2,203 boats in March.  Even though that is 501 more boats sold than in February, it was an 11% decrease from March 2014.

The total value of sales in March was $320.7 million, which was 20% higher than March of 2014.  The main driver behind the increase of valuation was the recent sales of higher priced superyachts.

Even without considering the superyacht market, the final price of brokerage boats was also strong.  The average sale price of boats less than 80 feet increased from $88,000 to $96,000........

The Great Lakes

Ohio Suing The USACE........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is being sued by the state of Ohio for their plans of dumping dredge spoils from Cleveland Harbor, which includes six miles of the Cuyahoga River, into Lake Erie, or they won't dredge the entire channel unless a non-federal partner pays for placing the spoils in a confined disposal facility.

The Corps proposed dumping the heavily contaminated dredge spoils into Lake Erie last year as well.  The Corps says that disposing the spoils in Lake Eric is the most cost effective method for the federal Government.

The state of Ohio is concerned that dumping the dredge spoils into Lake Erie will cause the levels of carcinogenic toxins (PCBs) to increase in fish, and then humans, as the toxins make their way up the food chain........

Two Men In A Home Built Boat Rescued From The North Sea........

On Monday, two men in their twenties called for help when their oars broke in the North Sea, leaving them stranded in their cobbled-together home made boat.

The men told their rescuers that their boat was constructed with plywood scraps, insulation boards, wire coat hangers, and held together with approximately $13 worth of silicone adhesive.

The pair had been out fishing on Sunday, and decided to go out again Monday.  When they were done fishing, they were too far out to sea, and their oars weren't strong enough.  Neither of the men could swim, and they were not wearing lifejackets.  Luckily, no one was hurt.......

New Riverboat Will Be Christened Soon........

American Cruise Lines recently announced the upcoming christening of their second paddlewheeler for the Mississippi River, the American Eagle.  She will be christened by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's wife, Cheryl Landrieu.

Judy Roman, Vice President of American Cruise Lines says that New Orleans has played a crucial part in the growth of American Cruise Lines, and that the city is a favorite destination of American Cruise Line's passengers.

The American Eagle will feature 84 staterooms, ranging from 300 to 600 square feet, allowing the vessel to carry 150 guests.  78 of the staterooms will have large private balconies, equipped with sliding glass doors.  The riverboat was designed to mimic the elegance of late 19th century riverboats, but it will be the most modern, and the most green vessel on the Mississippi River........

Upper Missouri River Basin

Water Releases Reduced Due To Little Snow........

The amount of water being released from the reservoirs on the Upper Missouri River has been reduced, because officials are only expecting about 80% of the usual amount of runoff into the river basin this spring.

On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said that they have reduced the outflow from the dam on the South Dakota-Nebraska border, due to the reduced water forecast.

Officials are saying that the mountain snowpack in the Upper Missouri River Basin is only about 68% of normal, and the snowpack is approximately 74% of normal between the Fort Peck and Garrison dams.

The Corps believes that they will be able to supply enough water to support barge traffic for at least half of the normal shipping season........

Small Explosion On The Eads Bridge Tuesday........

On Tuesday morning, a power box attached to the side of the Eads Bridge exploded.  Initially, Amren Missouri said that the explosion was caused by lightning striking a high voltage power line.  Later, they said that rainwater got into the electrical box, triggering the explosion.

The electrical box controls the navigational lights along the Eads Bridge.  If the electrical box is not repaired by nightfall, problems could arise for those navigating the Mississippi River.  As a precaution, the U.S. Coast Guard has been alerted to the situation.

MetroLink temporarily halted train traffic over the Eads Bridge after the explosion, even though the explosion did not involve them........

USDA Investing In Water Quality Improvements........

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service recently announced that they would be investing $10 million this year for 27 new high-priority watersheds, and 13 existing projects that will assist in improving the water quality of the Mississippi River Basin.

The funds are a portion of the commitment of $100 million over four years, to attend to critical water quality concerns in priority watersheds, while enhancing rural economies.

The conservation systems are intended to reduce the amount of nutrients flowing into the waterways from agricultural lands, decrease erosion, and improve the resiliency of farmlands after droughts and floods........

Multi-Ship Collision Causes Oil Spill........

At around 4 pm Monday, approximately 420 gallons of oil spilled into the Mississippi River near Convent, Louisiana, following a multi-vessel collision.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the 751 foot long bulk carrier Privocean broke free of it's moorings, drifted downstream, striking the 98 foot long towing vessel, Texas.  The Privocean continued downstream, and collided with an 816 foot tank ship, the Bravo, which was offloading crude oil.

Officials had shut down the Mississippi River between Mile Marker 163 and Mile Marker 154, and have advised parish officials downstream to monitor their water supplies........

Fish Tales From San Diego, California

Angler Hauled Overboard By Hungry Sea Lion........

On Sunday afternoon, a man was posing for a photo with his "trophy fish", when he was attacked by a sea lion, and dragged overboard, into the water.

Lee Swanson, spokesman for San Diego Fire-Rescue said that the 62 year old man was bitten by a sea lion, and pulled into the water.  The man suffered puncture wounds and lacerations to his leg, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Several boaters at the Hyatt Mission Bay Marina say they haven't heard of an attack like this, but they have noticed that the sea lions are becoming more aggressive........

NEWS from BoatUS
Three Boating Tips Just For Springtime

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 6, 2015 – Across America at boat launch ramps, the familiar growl of boat motors waking up from their long winter nap heralds the start of the boating season. But what makes boating, fishing or sailing this time of year different from all others? When it comes to safety, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has three tips to answer that question:

1. The water is still cold. Darn cold. Even though the white stuff is gone and you’re in a T-shirt and can feel the sun’s warmth on your face, lurking beneath your boat’s keel is water that could make breathing difficult or disable you in minutes after an accidental fall overboard. It’s a good idea to wear a comfortable life jacket, and if solo, rig a self-boarding ladder that can be deployed while in the water.

2. Have backup plans. For a routine breakdown while underway, having an on water towing plan from BoatUS can help. However, most important is to leave a note, or “float plan,” for friends or family members advising them of your expected return. That’s because early in the season there are way-too-few boaters out there who could provide aid if something unexpected happened, and if no one knows where you are, you could be in a heap of trouble. A sample float plan can be found at: BoatUS.com/floatplan.

3. The number one reason why boats sink in the springtime is being in a hurry to get in the water. Check every engine hose and clamp. Remove leaves in scuppers and clear clogged cockpit drains. Check to see that freezing water didn’t crack the sea strainer or seacock/valves. Go to BoatUS.com/springchecklist to get a copy of a Spring Fitting Out Safety Checklist.

U.S. Sen. Kirk Praises "Green" Sewage Overflow Fix........

Monday morning, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk appeared with Peoria officials to lend his support for the city's proposed answer to the problem of combined sewage overflow during heavy rain events.

Back in March, Peoria officials sent their proposal to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which offers a green solution to the city's chronic issues of sewage running into the Illinois River during heavy rains.

Instead of following a traditional repair models of increasing the below-ground capacity with larger pipes, tunnels and tanks, the green solution would involve the installation of rain gardens, native plants, and permeable pavement, which would allow rainwater to be absorbed by the ground, as opposed to running into the sewers........

Yesteryears Pictures of the Day in 2013.....  .were sent to us by capt'n Dave Bullington who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat..... Whoz Yer Daddy

Bill,

We just completed a 2 year restoration and wanted to share some pictures. "Sue-Bee" is a 1958 Bowman 16' runabout. She's powered by a 1957 Johnson 35HP Sea Stallion and sits on a 1955 Gator trailer. The interesting thing about this particular boat is the construction. It was built by Goodyear Aerospace by using heat formed vacuum plastic for the hull (very hi-tech for the era) and then fitted out with a wooden deck and interior, This is the only specimen of it's kind we have seen and that is what makes it so unique. The last picture was taken today and it is of her departure from Ole Boys (Dale Roth's shop in St. Paul). Never mind what's in the styrofoam cups, some will say it's Crown Royal but that is just a rumor!
