MDC Program Benefits Paddlefish........

The Missouri Department of Conservation fisheries program combines a hatchery with a stocking program to provide anglers with a paddlefish sport fishery, which is one of the best in the nation.

A time and science-based fisheries management program is necessary to grow a fish where the "big ones" are three to six feet long, and weigh in between 70 and 150 pounds.  Paddlefish take up to 20 years to reach that kind of size.

Trish Yasger, A MDC fisheries management biologist that oversees the paddlefish program says that the paddlefish are quite unique, in that they are slow growing, but they have a long lifespan........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS: 2015 List of Top Ten Boat Names

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 30, 2015 – Big and small, power or sail, there are many different kinds of boats and so many different kinds of boat owners. But the one thing they seem to agree on is how boating makes them feel, at least if your looking at a boat’s name on the transom. “Serenity” has been named the #1 boat name for the second year in a row with the release of the 2015 list of Top Ten Boat Names from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). It is also the name’s tenth appearance on the popular list of boat names issued annually since 1992 by the recreational boat advocacy, service and safety group. “Calm, peaceful and untroubled is what boating is all about for so many boaters,” said BoatUS spokesman Scott Croft.

The BoatUS 2015 list of Top Ten Boat Names:
1. Serenity
2. Seas the Day
3. Andiamo (Italian for “let’s go”)
4. Aquaholic
5. Second Wind
6. Island Time
7. Happy Ours
8. Journey
9. Serendipity
10. Relentless

Croft says boaters frequently come to BoatUS to get ideas for a name by taking a peek at the Association’s online list of over 8,000 boat names, then use the free and easy layout program to, “Start playing around with a boat name to get an idea of what it will look like, picking letter styles and colors.” Boaters can then choose to either order online or if they want some more creative help, may use the BoatUS Premium Boat Graphics service that offers the talents of a professional designer. An online photo gallery can also help boaters also narrow down a choice.

“Picking a boat name can be harder than naming one’s own child,” said Croft, who has had to name several of his boats through the years. “Boat names can reflect your lifestyle, your relationship to loved ones or what you do for a living. And that’s only the beginning.” For the record, Croft’s first boat name was “Constitution” because, “We happened to name her on a July 4th weekend and I had only a limited choice of ugly hardware store letters.” For his second boat name, Croft chose “Aiden R.” after his only son and used the BoatUS graphics service. “Kids sometimes think it’s pretty cool to have their name on a boat. It’s also a real safe bet for parent to choose – but only if you have one child,” he said with a smile.

The BoatUS Graphics service also offers easy video instructions on how to remove or add a graphic to a boat as well a 30-day “Oops Assurance Guarantee” that allows the buyer to receive replacement decals free of charge if the graphic was damaged during installation. For more, go to BoatUS.com/boatnames.

New Park Opening In The Chesterfield Valley........

On April 11, a new park will be opening in the Chesterfield Valley.  River's Edge Park is located behind the Taubman Outlet Mall, near I-64, and a hockey arena.

The park is centered around a lake, which was originally formed during the Great Flood of 1993.  When it formed, it was only about 17.5 acres, but it grew larger when fill dirt was needed for repairs to the Monarch Levee.

The lake has yet to be stocked, but there are some very large fish present in the lake.  They are likely descendents of the fish stranded by the receding floodwaters........

Push On To Improve The Hickman Riverport........

While the population of Hickman, Kentucky is only about 2,500, the local government believes that their riverport along the Mississippi River could impact up to 100 million jobs across the country.

Greg Curlin, the Executive Director of the Hickman/Fulton Riverport says that the usage of the river has begun to pick up, and they need to focus keeping up with and maintaining the port.

David Lattus, Hickman's Mayor said that the Port of Hickman is as essential to traffic along the Mississippi River as the large ports.  Lattus added that it is critical to keep flood protection and river infrastructure up to keep commodities moving on the river........

Reportedly, there had been one business that received several noise complaints last summer.  Mayor Thompson says that the situation is similar to teaching school, in that one doesn't punish the whole class for the actions of a few........

East Moline Riverfront Project Moving Forward........

The first phase of the project will include two Hyatt branded hotels, a Hyatt Place and a Hyatt House, three apartment buildings, a pool house and a rental office.  It will also have a three acre central park with a bandshell.

Ten Mississippi River Ports To Be Dredged........

During 2015, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be spending over $7 million dredging out 10 ports along the Mississippi River in Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee.

According to Corps spokesman Jim Pogue, this is one of the largest dredging projects undertaken by the Corps in several years.

Kansas Scuttles Missouri River Diversion Plans........

Recently, Tracy Streeter, the executive director of the Kansas Water Office, stated that Kansas officials have no intentions of pursuing a proposal for the construction of an aqueduct and a concrete lined canal between northeast Kansas to the western portion of the state.

The proposal was fiercely opposed in northeastern Kansas, as well as from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, who called the plan a "hare-brained idea".  Streeter said that the components and the costs, at $18 billion to construct, and $1 billion annually to operate, are not feasible.

Even though Kansas officials rejected the proposal, supporters of the Missouri River diversion say that they are not going to give up on finding a way to get water to parched parts of the state........

Rising Mississippi River Won't Need Bonnet Carre Spillway........

The Lower Mississippi River may be on the rise, but it doesn't appear that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway to divert muddy freshwater into Lake Pontchartrain.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest at New Orleans Wednesday, at around 14.2 feet above sea level.  The river must rise to a height of 17 feet before the spillway is opened.

Jeff Graschel, river forecaster with the National Weather Service says that the Mississippi River was at the same level in 2013, and it is normal.  Graschel added that the rise in river levels has been driven by the Ohio River, and they are fortunate that there hasn't been a lot of rainfall in the Mississippi River Valley.......

Alton Marina Addressing Silting Concerns........

During Wednesday's Alton City Council meeting, the aldermen voted unanimously on a resolution allowing the General Manager of Parrot Pointe Marine Inc., Karen Baker-Brncic to seek bids for the dredging of the Alton Marina.

Baker-Brncic says that during the flooding of 2013, the marina took in some silt.  She added that the silt needs to be dredged out of the marina and removed.  The entire marina does not have to be dredged, just the entrance,  thoroughfare, and in the middle of the slips.

Alton's director of development and housing, Greg Caffey stated that Baker-Brncic will be seeking bids on both hydraulic and mechanical dredging.  Caffey says that costs for the project will depend upon the method of dredging used.  Typically, mechanical dredging is cheaper........

US Army Corps of Engineers

Lake Erie Ice Thickness Flight

The ice boom, located at the outlet of Lake Erie near the head of the Niagara River, is installed each year to accelerate the formation and stabilization of the natural ice arch. The ice boom is installed to reduce the frequency and duration of ice runs from Lake Erie into the Niagara River, but does not eliminate the release of lake ice into the Niagara River.

By reducing the frequency and duration of ice runs, the ice boom diminishes the probability of large-scale ice blockages in the river which can cause flooding, damage to shoreline property, as well as a reduction in flow of water to the hydro-electric power plant intakes.

The ice boom is owned and operated by the New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation and both are responsible for its installation and removal.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) was established under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 to help the United States and Canada prevent and resolve disputes over the use of shared waters.

The IJC's International Niagara Board of Control, established in 1953, monitors the operation of the Chippawa-Grass Island Pool above Niagara Falls and also oversees the installation and removal of the ice boom. The Board also monitors the ice melt each spring to determine when conditions are acceptable for the removal of the boom.

As part of the monitoring efforts, representatives of the Board including the Corps of Engineers, Environment Canada, New York Power Authority, and Ontario Power Generation, perform helicopter flights on the eastern end of Lake Erie to determine the thickness of the lake ice.

First, the helicopter will land on the ice and bounce to test the stability.

Once it is determined that the ice is solid enough to walk on, team members move out onto the ice and drill holes using an electric auger.

After the auger penetrates through the ice, a modified ruler is used to take ice thickness measurements.

This process is repeated at five additional locations across the eastern end of Lake Erie.

Ice thickness is one piece of information used to monitor the ice behind the boom.

Other monitoring includes:
- Observation of ice cover through satellite imagery
- Information from the Canadian and U.S. National Ice Services
- And flights over the ice using a fixed wing aircraft

The boom opening is dependent on weather, ice conditions in the Niagara River, and other factors. Traditionally the boom is opened by April 1 of each year, unless there is more than 250 square miles of ice remaining in the eastern end of Lake Erie.

As The Mississippi River Rises, West Bank Levee Patrols Begin........

On March 17, the Mississippi River rose above 11 feet on the Carrollton gauge at New Orleans, prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to activate the first phase of their flood fight plan.  The Corps began conducting twice weekly levee inspections.

As of Tuesday, March 24, the Mississippi River was reading 13 feet, 3 inches on the Carrollton Gauge.  By April 1, the river is expected to crest at 14 feet.  Regional director of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-West, John Monzon says that daily levee patrols are continuing, and they have increased patrols.

Monzon added that based upon the snow melt and the rain falling within the Missouri, Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys the river could keep rising.  Flood stage on the Carrollton gauge is 17 feet........

Study:  Levee Detonation Reduced Cairo Flood Risk........

A recently published computer modeling analysis created by UC Irvine scientists says that the controversial decision to blow the levee protecting the New Madrid Floodway reduced the risk of flooding at Cairo, Illinois.

The modeling focused on the on the Missouri agricultural region that was submerged when the levee was detonated.  Researchers found that the New Madrid Floodway would have flooded anyway, if the Mississippi River had been allowed to overtop the levee.

Separate computer modeling predicted that the damage to the crops and buildings would have been similar, whether the levee was blown, or it was overtopped.  The detonation of the levee did shift the damage zone from Illinois and Kentucky to Missouri, however........
