Hi Bill!
Visiting Oconee Lake near Atlanta, Georgia. It means "Great Waters" and actually used to be a river before they dammed it in the '80s. I enjoyed your party at the boat show!

See you on the river!

Public Comments Sought On Flood Control Project........

This summer, there will be another opportunity for members of the public to comment on the controversial St. John's Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project, which is intended to mitigate flood risks to St. John's Bayou and the floodway.

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' final environmental impact statement on the St. John's Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project underwent a review by an independent panel of experts.  Project manager, Danny Ward, said that a public review and comment period for the project would be coming up.

The tentative plan involves sealing off a 1,500 foot gap in the Mississippi River levee system, and constructing a 1,500 cubic feet per second pumping station in the New Madrid Floodway, as well as a 1,000 cfs pumping station in the St. John's Bayou Basin........

Changes To The Rock River Floodplain Map May Affect Homeowners, Businesses........

The Mayor of East Moline, John Thodos stated that proposed changes to the Rock River floodplain map may affect homeowners, deter development, and drive more businesses to the Iowa sections of the Quad Cities.

Thodos says that he will keep appealing to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, who are reviewing the draft floodplain map, and are soliciting feedback from the cities and counties that would be affected by the proposed changes.

Laura Berkley, a senior planner with Bi-State Regional Commission, says that the revised Rock River floodplain map names the properties that could flood, allowing insurance companies to assess the flooding risk, and correspondingly set flood insurance rates........

Towboat Sinks On The Ohio River, Coast Guard Responds........

At around 8 pm Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard was called out to the Ohio River near Golconda, Illinois for reports of a towboat sinking in the river.

The Coast Guard Sector Ohio River Valley watchstanders were advised that the towing vessel David Dunnigan sank while operating near the Ohio River Mile Marker 897.5.  Reportedly, the vessel capsized, sank and drifted downstream.  The exact location of the vessel is not known at this time.

Vessel restrictions have been placed between Mile Marker 896.5 and Mile Marker 900, which will remain in effect until the submerged vessel has been located.  Members of the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Paducah, Kentucky are on the scene to monitor the response and recovery efforts.........

Wine Recovered From A 150 Year Old Shipwreck Disappointing........

Back in 2011, five bottles of wine were discovered aboard the shipwreck of the Mary-Celestia, which sank off the shore of Bermuda in 1864.  She had been dispatched to attempt to break the Union blockade of the Confederacy.

Recently, one of those bottles was opened and sampled by sommeliers during a wine festival, who were a bit disappointed, to say the least.

Reviews from the Charleston Wine + Food Festival in South Carolina described the wine as having a "sulfur bouquet with distinct notes of saltwater and gasoline" and "a mixture of day-old crab water, with hints of citrus and alcohol".

According to master sommelier Paul Roberts, it is not an inevitable conclusion that the wine would bad.  Roberts said that he has had great shipwreck wines before........

Lower Missouri River Valley

A Luxury Tour Of The Lower Missouri River Is Being Developed........

Retired St. Louis businessman and farmer, Dan Burkhardt, is working on assembling a five day tour that will show off the best that St. Louis has to offer, as well as the lower 100 miles of the Missouri River.

The tour is scheduled for October 3 - 7 as the fall colors are nearing their peak.  It will be limited to 24 passengers.  Costs will be $1,795 per person, based upon double occupancy.  Singles will run $2,495 each.

Burkhardt says that the tour is not intended to be a moneymaker, that at best, it will break even.  He added that any profits from the tour would be set aside for the Katy Trail Trust.

Recently, Burkhardt assembled a coffee table book entitled "Missouri River Country:  100 Miles of Stories and Scenery from Hermann to the Confluence", which celebrates the art, food, scenery, and wine of the Missouri River Valley, beginning with the German influx during the 1830s........

Mississippi River Project Offering Boating Classes........

As the temperatures are rising, that itch to go boating is getting stronger and stronger.  While it is tempting to just hop in the boat and go, it is essential to make sure that you are prepared.

The Mississippi River Project is willing to help whip boaters into shape by offering free boating safety classes.  At this time, there are four classes left to get boaters shipshape before hitting the water.

Only one class session is necessary to earn the Illinois Boat Safety Certification, which is recognized in Iowa and Illinois........

Cargill Irrigation Pond Leaks, Contaminates City Pond And Marina........

Over the weekend of March 7th and 8th, a breach occurred in an earthen water irrigation pond owned by meat processor, Cargill, causing the spill of several million gallons of water.  Workers arriving at the Cargill facility on Monday, March 9 discovered a 40 foot hole in the pond's wall.

The water ended up in Cargill's crop fields, and the City of Beardstown's irrigation ditches, which feed into the city pond, the marina, and eventually, the Illinois River.  After the leak occurred, residents reported dead fish in the city pond.

After the breach occurred, Cargill notified the city, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  Even though no correlation between the fish kill and the spill has been established, Cargill will restock the pond, as irrigation water was discovered there........

Missouri River Management

Legislation Introduced To Change River Management Goals........

On Monday, U.S. Representative Sam Graves (R-MO) introduced legislation that would alter how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages the flow of the Missouri River.

Currently, the Army Corps Master Manual lists eight authorized purposes for the Missouri River.  The legislation would remove "fish and wildlife" from the Corps purview.

Graves believes that the change would likely reduce the chances of flooding along the Missouri River, and would make families, farmers, and small businesses priorities in the Corps' management of the Missouri River........

The Legend Of The Piasa Bird........

According to Alton Township Supervisor, and a local historian, Don Huber, the legend of the Piasa Bird is an unverified story that has been passed down through the generations around Alton.

The Current Piasa Bird is perched along the bluffs just outside of Alton.  It came into being when the park below it was built in 1998.  Members of the community helped out with painting the bird.

The legend of the Piasa Bird dates back to the Illini Indians, who gave the beast it's name.  During Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet's trip down the Mississippi River in 1673, he described the Piasa as a "bird like monster"........

Spring Means Varying Temps, Flooding, And Hazards For Boaters........

The superintendant of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Colonel Ron Replogle is reminding boaters that with the arrival of spring comes varying temperatures and conditions, especially flooding.

The highway patrol is reminding boaters that extra care must be taken when boating in flooded areas.  Sometimes, when rivers and lakes are swollen, it may be better to stay off the water.

Waterways that are flooded may have currents that could be hazardous to boaters, as swiftly moving water can easily capsize a boat, or personal watercraft, especially when obstacles are present........

Boating Safety

Some Fire Extinguishers Have Been Recalled........

While boaters are getting ready to hit the water, Boat Owners Association of the United States is advising them to pay a bit more attention to the fire extinguishers aboard the boat.

Prominent fire extinguisher manufacturer, Kidde, and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission have announced a voluntary recall on certain Kidde fire extinguishers.  Reportedly, a faulty valve component may keep the disposable fire extinguishers from fully discharging when the lever is repeatedly depressed and released.

There are 31 models of the disposable extinguishers affected.  They may be red, silver, or white, with a black valve, and were manufactured in Mexico between July 23, 2013, and October 15, 2014.  The extinguishers manufactured for the marine market will have a nameplate with the names Mariner 10, Mariner 110, Mariner 5 and Mariner 5G........

Boating Safety

Think You Can Design A Life Jacket People Will Wear?

Everyone knows that they should be wearing a life jacket when they hit the water, but many don't.  Some say they are too hot, or too bulky, or that they cost too much.

Continuing their quest for safety, the BoatUS Foundation and the Personal Floatation Device Manufacturers Association is giving boaters the opportunity to design a life jacket that more people would be inclined to wear.  Also, as an added incentive, the winning designer will be $10,000 richer.

The 2015 innovations in Life Jacket Design Competition is calling on all would-be engineers to submit their ideas, which can be as simple as a conceptual drawing, or as complex as a working prototype.  The deadline for entries is April 15........

Hannibal Marina On The Back Burner, Large Riverboats In Focus........

With the formation of the Riverfront Task Force, many people thought that a decision about Hannibal Marina's future would be tops on the agenda.  During Thursday's inaugural meeting of the group, docks for fishing and pleasure boats was not the center of the discussion.  Moorings for large riverboats was.

Jeff LaGarce, Hannibal's city manager, and Andy Dorian, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department advised the group that last month, officials from Viking Excursions had been in contact with the city, regarding the possibility of Hannibal becoming a port of call for the cruise line in a few years.

Eventually, Viking intends to have six cruise vessels plying the river.  Currently, the Spirit of Peoria, the American Queen, and the Queen of the Mississippi stop at Hannibal, and city officials are concerned about the possibility of gridlock along the riverfront.  LaGarce says that the city needs more port space........

The Ohio River Is At The Highest Levels Since 2011........

It is expected that the Ohio River at Cincinnati will remain above flood stage until Thursday.  The National Weather Service says that the Ohio River would hit it's crest Sunday morning, just under 58 feet.  Flood stage is 52 feet.

Sunday morning's predicted crest of 58.7 feet is the highest it has been since March 5, 1997, when the Ohio River reached 64.7 feet.

The Ohio River is expected to remain over flood stage until at least Wednesday, leaving low-lying areas under water........

Sinking Tug Captain Jumped Into Icy Water Without Immersion Suit........

On Saturday, the captain of a sinking tugboat died after jumping into the frigid waters off the coast of New York's Fire Island.

The Sea Bear was trailing to other tugs back to port, when it began to sink in stormy weather.  Three crewmembers were able to get into their immersion suits, and were found by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Reportedly, the Sea Bear sank very quickly, only allowing a few seconds for a distress call to the Coast Guard.  The on-duty captain, Donald Maloney, apparently did not have time to don his immersion suit prior to abandoning ship........
