Tuesday morning, the Illinois Department of Transportation will shut down Interstate 270 for the first of three explosive demolitions to remove the old Chain of Rocks Canal Bridges.

Some More Information Of The Chain Of Rocks Canal Bridge Project........

The Illinois Department of Transportation's I-270 Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge Project began back in October of 2011.  The project involves bridge and levee construction, bridge demolition, pavement removal, construction of new Interstate highway approaches, and a partial reconstruction of the Illinois Route 3 interchange.  Drainage improvements will be made, sign structures will need to be built, box culverts will be installed, as well as new highway lighting.

The Chain of Rocks Canal is the navigable channel for all Mississippi River barge traffic transiting the St. Louis Metro region.  I-270 is one of the major commuter links between Missouri and Illinois, carrying approximately 55,000 cars across the river daily.  The existing Chain of Rocks Canal Bridges also cross the Chain of Rocks Levee, which is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers........

Lead Blaster:  I Wish Spectators Would Stay Home........

At 10 am Tuesday, the former eastbound I-270 bridge over the Chain of Rocks Canal will be brought down into the canal.  The 450 foot steel span, weighing 1.25 million pounds, is expected to be brought down in 15 pieces.

Spectators will be able to watch the blast from the West Chain of Rocks Bridge, however, the demolition company is hoping that spectators stay away.

Albert Godfrey, general manager of Demtech, says that his lead blaster said that he wishes that people understood that demolition is not a spectator sport, and that they would all stay home........

Boys Rescued After Falling Through Ice........

On Monday morning, two boys were rescued from Lake Sainte Louise after they fell through the ice.  The 14 year old boys went into the lake just a few moments after being told to get off of the ice.

Police Officer Rick Frauenfelder arrived on the scene to find one boy bobbing in the water, and the other desperately clinging to the ice shelf.  Frauenfelder and Officer Ryan Hall stripped their duty gear off, grabbed life jackets and ropes and ran to the water.  As they were throwing the ropes out to the boys, one of them slipped below the water's surface.

Firefighters from Lake St. Louis and Wentzville arrived on the scene with special ice rescue suits, and quickly retrieved the boy who was above the water.  After a short search, the second boy was found on the bottom of the lake.  He was rushed to the hospital, where emergency personnel were able to get a pulse back.........

Hannibal Parks Board Backs Riverfront Task Force........

The director of the Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department, Andy Dorian, recently advised Park Board members that Hannibal's riverfront needs some "tender loving care".

Dorian said that plans for the riverfront would need to be a long term, and that the scope of the plan means that the Parks Department would not be able to tackle it themselves.  Practically all of the riverfront, including the marina, existing parks, the river wall and riverboat docking facilities, would be up for consideration.

On Thursday night, the Park Board approved the creation of the Riverfront Task Force, which will include members of the public, as well as representatives from various city departments.  Dorian added that the idea is to have the task force meet by February to early March........

Hi Bill

We went to the C. We did not see many eagles but it was still a fun event. I do not remember ever going across the bridge although I am sure I did when I was little. So going was more about the bridge and river than the eagles. They did have an eagle in one of the tents that they rescued which cannot go back into the wild. They use it for educational purposes but it looked more like it wanted outside!

Minneapolis-based dancer and choreographer, Patrick Scully, wants to stage a ballet on the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities.  The performers will not be dancers, but rather boats of all sizes.

Approximately five years ago, Scully was called on to put together a performance for a festival in Germany.  He came up with the idea of the boat ballet to get viewers to see the river in a new ways.

Scully intends to up the ante in the Twin Cities, as he wants to get 100 boats involved in the event.  He would also like to try to get a river barge to pass as part of the dance, if a barge company will cooperate........

Oil Spills Into Yellowstone River After Pipeline Breach........

About 10 am Saturday morning, a pipeline breach spilled up to 50,000 gallons of  oil into the Yellowstone River, close to Glendive, Montana.  Officials are saying that they are not aware of any threats to public safety.

According to Dave Parker, spokesman for Montana Governor Steve Bullock, some of the oil did make it into the water, however, the area where the spill occurred was frozen over, and that should minimize the impact.

The Bridger Pipeline Co. says that they shut the 12 inch pipeline down before 11 am.  Tad True, vice president of Bridger says that main concern is minimizing the environmental impact of the spill........

River History

A Look Back At The Snagboats........

During America's steamboat era, the greatest risk to river travel and commerce was not fire or explosions, but snags.  Snags are trees that have found their way into the river as a result of bank erosion.  River currents carry them toward the middle of the channel, where the heavy end with the roots lodges in the riverbed, with the rest of the tree pointing downstream at an angle.  They can puncture a boat's hull, typically causing it to sink.  Snags caused massive losses of vessels, cargos, and lives.

In 1824, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started removing obstructions and snags along navigable rivers.  Veteran riverman, Henry Miller Shreve, came up with the first practical snagboat, the Heliopolis.  She was a twin-hulled vessel equipped with an iron sheathed beam, called a butting beam, which connected the hulls.  To remove the snag, the vessel rammed it with the butting beam, dislodging it.  Crews then hoisted the snag aboard with a windlass........

Bill,

We were on the River January 11, 2013 in my restored 1972 V-153 Futura Glastron. Saw many Eagles. Did not get any good pics of Eagles. Went slow though an ice field in Lake Center Marina (no scratches on hull). Floated down Ski Shoot with some friends. There were even two boats on Enterprise Island.

Keep up the good work on the Website,

John and Kelli Eisele

The Great Flood Of 1993

Records Eclipsed By The Great Flood Of 1993........

Back in 1973, the mighty Mississippi River ripped open levees, and made history, when it ran 13.2 feet above flood stage in downtown St. Louis.

Twenty years later, the Mississippi River broke it's own record at St. Louis by 6.3 feet.  The Great Flood of 1993 covered 17,000 square miles of land in the Midwest.  The River remained over flood stage for five months.

The flooding in 1993 not only caused, but also inspired permanent changes to the topography.  Governmental agencies purchased over 7,700 damaged properties, and two towns abandoned lowlands for higher ground........

Several hundred people headed out to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge for the annual Eagle Days event.  Eagle Days is hosted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Great Rivers Greenway.

There were many eagles perched in trees but no so many in the air.  Randy Holbrook, with the IDNR, says that eagles were not in the air because of high winds.

Visitors can stop at tents erected along the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge to learn about eagles and other wildlife along the river.  Telescopes focused on nesting eagles are set up on the center of the span as well.

Proposed Stadium Would Not Be Disposable........

Planners behind the proposal for a new, open air stadium on the north riverfront are saying that it would not be a "throw away" model, but rather a "first-ever forever" football facility.

David Peacock, former president of Anheuser-Busch, spoke with National Football League officials, saying that the stadium would be a permanent skyline change, and wouldn't be taken lightly.

Peacock said that NFL executives understood that St. Louis officials were not interested in building a stadium that gets replaced in 30 years by a newer, flashier one.  The proposed stadium would be located on the Mississippi River and seat 64,000........

Less Water Training After Highway, Water Patrol Merger........

On Thursday, a House panel released a report that noted that swim training decreased after the 2011 merger of the highway and water patrols.

Legislators spent several months going over the merger following the May 2014 drowning death of Brandon Ellingson.  Ellingson fell from a trooper's boat while handcuffed, after being arrested on suspicion of drunken boating.

The merger was intended to reduce costs by $3 million per year.  The report found that the merger cost taxpayers $900,000, and resulted in less trooper training.........
