Ice Breaking Operations Begin In The Great Lakes........

On Thursday, the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards began Operation Coal Shovel, which is seasonal ice breaking operations along the southern part of Lake Huron, Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River systems, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards team up to keep ice jams at bay as conditions worsen over the winter season.

An ice jam can bring maritime commerce to a halt, so the ice breakers work diligently to keep the ice flowing down river, allowing critical winter cargoes to reach their destinations.......

Illinois River At Florence, Illinois

Residents Call To Rebuild Florence Boat Ramp........

The popular public boat ramp at Florence, Illinois sees frequent use, unless the Illinois River is up.  After the river goes down, heavy equipment is sometimes needed to clear the mud from the ramp.

Local resident Leonard Wade is looking for changes to be made to the Florence boat ramp, which is the only public boat ramp between Kampsville and Naples, and he is seeking support from area residents, as well as the county.

Wade says that he would like to see the the ramp completely revamped, from the main road from Florence, to the river.  He added that the project would be costly, and he wasn't certain that the project could be completed........

Several years ago, the Bridge West initiative was introduced with the intention of sprucing up the entrance to Alton from Missouri.

Plans involve making landscape and streetscape improvements between the intersection of Landmarks and Broadway, and the entrance to Alton Center Business Park.

There has also been talk with the state about finding ways to slow down traffic through that area, however, since the road is a state route, it is up to IDOT whether to lower the speed........

EPA In Hot Water Over West Lake Landfill........

For four decades, regulators were aware that radioactive waste was buried in the West Lake Landfill.  For more than twenty years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been responsible for dealing with the waste.

Nearby residents and regional leaders are frustrated with the lack of progress, and the ongoing fire underground has added a sense of urgency to the matter.

A late November report has said that the fire was moving closer to the location of the radioactive waste.  Also, a recent report found higher levels of radium in the groundwater under the landfill.  The EPA notes that it cannot be determined that the radium is from the radioactive waste in the landfill.

Missouri River Management

Aquifer Is Not Replenished By Silted In Missouri River........

In 1927, spring flooding devastated farmlands and river towns lining the Missouri River.  Congress responded by ordering the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform a comprehensive hydrological study of the Missouri River Basin.

The study results were presented to Congress in 1934, with a stern warning:  Do not construct flood control structures along the Missouri River upstream of Sioux City, Iowa.  The main worry was that the river's persistent silting issues would lead to clogged hydro-turbines and require constant dredging operations.

After the flooding in 1943 ravaged portions of Nebraska and Iowa, Congress approved the construction of five major dams along the main stem of the Upper Missouri River.

As the earlier study predicted, siltation is a major issue along the Upper Missouri River, clogging hydro-turbines and requiring dredging.  Another issue the silt has caused is the formation of an impenetrable layer on the river bottom.  This layer of muck is preventing the Missouri River from "recharging" the Ogallala aquifer, which spans from Canada down to Texas........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

A New Riverboat Will Be Stopping At Hannibal........

This year, another riverboat is expected to begin making stops at Hannibal.  Viking Excursions is currently constructing a new riverboat to ply the waters of the Mississippi River.

The new vessel is expected to be similar to the Viking Longships that the company operates in Europe, as opposed to the traditional paddlewheel boats that run along the Mississippi River.

Gail Bryant, director of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau says that another riverboat stopping at Hannibal is a good thing.  Bryant added that Viking would be cruising the Mississippi River in the near future........

Legislators Call For Funds For St. Joseph Levees........

Recently, U.S. Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill teamed up with U.S. Representative Sam Graves to pen a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers calling for funding for levee improvements in northwest Missouri.

Last month, the omnibus spending bill was passed by Congress, and it provides funding to the Corps for new projects that will mitigate flood and storm damage.  The legislator's letter says that billions of dollars of assets are at risk by the constant flood threats along the Missouri River near St. Joseph.

Steve Johnson, director of the Community Alliance of St. Joseph says that levee improvements have been needed since the flood of 1993........

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota

Upper At. Anthony Falls Lock Is Closing........

This year, sometime before June 10, 2015, the uppermost lock on the Mississippi River, the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock at Mile Marker 854 in Minneapolis, Minnesota will be closed to all navigation.

This action is required by the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014.

The closure will stop the use of the lock by recreational, and commercial vessels, in addition to stopping all other navigational uses.  The lock's visitor center will be shut down as well........

Rend Lake

    Warning Issued Following Drownings........

Earlier in the week, Terry Calvert died while attempting to save his grandson, 13 year old Cade Calvert, who had fallen into Rend Lake during a fishing trip.  An 11 year old grandson remained aboard the boat, and was assisted by other fishermen nearby.

Officials think that Terry Calvert died from a combination of hypothermia and probable drowning, and Cade, who was retrieved from the bottom of the lake, died from drowning.

Marty Werderbaugh, safety and occupational health manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District says the Calverts were not wearing personal floatation devices, and that was likely a major contributor to their deaths.

Illinois law mandates that boats and watercraft have to have enough PFDs for all aboard.  Also, children under 13 are required to wear a PFD........

The Great Lakes

Fish May Be Harmed By Drugs In The Lake........

Researchers with the School of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have found traces of the diabetes drug metformin in water samples taken from Lake Michigan near sewage treatment plants.

The drug is the most common drug prescribed for Type 2 diabetes, and has been found in water samples taken two miles offshore.  The metformin, and other drugs get into the sewage system, and eventually into the lake, because they are not completely metabolized after they are consumed, and then excreted.

The researchers reveal that the levels of metformin in the water may be high enough to affect the endocrine systems of fish.  The amount of metformin found near the sewage treatment plant are 40 parts per billion, and two miles offshore, 120 parts per trillion........

Missouri History Museum

Exhibit:  "The Louisiana Purchase:  Making St. Louis, Remaking America"

As part of the year-long celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis, the Missouri History Museum has assembled an in-depth exhibit on perhaps the greatest land deal ever, the Louisiana Purchase.

The exhibit, The Louisiana Purchase:  Making St. Louis, Remaking America features many historically significant documents, most notably the Treaty of Cession.  The Treaty of Cession, better known as the Louisiana Purchase Treaty, was signed by James Monroe, Robert Livingston, and Barbe Marbois, and is widely held to be one of the most important documents in the history of the United States.

In 1803, the United States paid $15 million to France for 828,000 square miles of land, west of the Mississippi River.  The acquisition of this land, known as the Louisiana Territory, effectively doubled the size of the United States.

The 6,000 square foot exhibit focuses on the historical documents, but also features artifacts from the Missouri History Museum as it looks at how the Louisiana Purchase affected the St. Louis region, as well as the nation........

According to the event's organizer, Kevin Day, this year's New Year's Day Polar Bear Water Ski event brought in $5,500 through entry fees, sponsorships and sweatshirt sales.  Over the past 40 years, the annual event has brought in $102,000........

The Pictures of the Day....were sent to us by Mary Tiemann who hails out of Woodland Marina in the cruiser....  the Krystal Lady.

Since we just crossed the bridge to a new year, it seem fitting to post a couple of bridge pictures.

Mary sent us a some pics of the draw bridge that crosses the Illinois River at Hardin.  We coupled them up with a RiverBills pic for today's posting.

December Boating

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2013....  were sent to us by Dave Wickenhauser and Joy Steven from Bayside Marina in Miami........

Bill,

The boating is great in December.... you just have to go south ! This is Joy and I at Bayside Marina in Miami , starting our New Years cruise to the Keys in my 35 Tiara Open. While docked there we could not help but notice the center console next to us.... looks like it might go pretty fast ,but a little hard on the gas card !
