Boat Sales

Industry Sees Solid Sales Gains In November........

During November, the boating industry had another solid month of sales, posting double-digit sales increases.  This is quite different from November of last year, which saw a decrease of 1.5% in the main powerboat segments.

In the main powerboat segments, sales increased 11.2% to 2,799 units, and 12.4% industry-wide, to 3,969 units.  The outboard fiberglass segment, from 11 to 40 feet saw a sales increase of 21.3 %, and the aluminum pontoon boat segment increased by 10.3%

Typically, November is one of the slowest months of the year for boat sales, and seeing double-digit sales increases are unusual........

Quad Cities Woman First To Walk Across Mississippi River........

Quad Cities resident Marilyn Mitchem was reading a family history that was found amongst her mother's belongings, when she found out that her grandmother's grandmother was the first woman to walk across the Mississippi River on a bridge.

The span was not the wooden railroad bridge that was the first to cross the Mississippi River, which was hit by a steamboat shortly after it was completed and destroyed.  The bridge Eliza Allbee crossed was the swinging suspension work bridge that was built to allow workers access to get to the piers for the real bridge.

Reportedly, two of the swinging walkways were completed on a Saturday evening in March of 1865.  The next morning, some workmen decided to bring their wives down to cross the river.  One couple began to cross the bridge, when the woman decided she wanted to go back.  Young Mrs. Allbee then grabbed the hand rope and walked across the river........

How To Read A Marine Survey........

During the process of buying or selling a boat, you will likely come across a marine survey.  In the simplest of terms, a marine survey is a "snapshot" of a boat's condition and valuation at a particular point in time.

The marine survey is intended to give a potential vessel purchaser an impartial assessment of the boat with respect to nationally recognized standards, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

The survey begins with the basics, like make and model, the hull identification number, and the basic specs or dimensions of the vessel.  It then includes a description of the scope or depth of the items inspected on the vessel.  A good survey will include comments on all of the items inspected, as well as recommendations on items that may need to be addressed........

Study Evaluates Economic Impact Of Infrastructure Investment........

A recent study conducted by the University of Kentucky and the University of Kentucky looked at the economic impacts and possible effects of investment in infrastructure on the economy.

The study, sponsored by the National Waterways Foundation was conducted over two years, and allowed the authors to put together a conservative analysis of the navigation system's economic impact as it is now, and as it could be after infrastructure investments.

The report illustrates that there is not a better way to move, store, or manage freight than on the inland waterways........

Christmas Ship Carries On Maritime Tradition........

Over the past 15 years, the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw has become known as the modern day Christmas ship.  Each year, the U.S. Coast Guard and Chicago's maritime community re-enact the tradition of carrying Christmas trees from Michigan to Chicago, where they are given to needy families.

The original Christmas Ship sank in November of 1913 off the coast of Wisconsin during a heavy storm.  The Rouse Simmons was on her annual trip to Chicago when she went down.

Captain Amy Cocanour says that the program has brought over 18,000 Christmas trees to Chicago.  She added that the Christmas tree visit is a type of humanitarian gesture that the Coast Guard makes........

      Riverfront Plans Deal With Flooding........

Todd Raufeisen, the developer on The Dock restaurant along the Davenport, Iowa riverfront says that he was not too keen on the city's plans for an elevated walkway, which is called Beiderbecke Belvedere.

Raufeisen said that the walkway will not be suitable for his needs of ferrying supplies and people to and from the $12 million development during times of flooding.  He added that he has a plan for a walkway that could save the city up to $1 million.

According to Raufeisen, the city's proposed walkway would be too long for moving three restaurants worth of garbage when floodwaters are surrounding the building.  His proposal would use a combination of temporary and permanent elevated features that will allow better access........

Memo:  Bridges Crumbling, But Safe For Rail Traffic........

Recently, the Federal Railroad Administration released a four page memo on rail bridges crossing the Mississippi River that are crumbling, but are actually safe for rail traffic.

The memo outlines an investigation carried out in response to a complaint by U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin about four BNSF railroad bridges linking La Crosse and Genoa.  Citizen activists had been noting deteriorating conditions.

The memo says that the concerns over the bridges are understandable, given their appearance, however, inspections by BNSF and observations by the Federal Railroad Administration have not found any conditions that would keep the spans from carrying rail traffic....

Over the past year, state legislators across the nation have debated numerous boating issues, and there are many states that will have new boating laws taking effect with the next few years.

Illinois passed SB 3433, which toughens the boating law in the state, and requires that boaters born after January 1, 1998 toat operate a boat with more than 10 horsepower must earn a boater safety certification that is recognized by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Mo Rep Asks To Continue Levee Project.........

Recently, U.S. Representative Jason Smith, R-Salem sent a letter to President Obama voicing his support for the St. Johns Bayou and New Madrid Floodway Project, and called for the completion of the project.

Smith sent the letter only a day after officials and civic leaders from the area penned letters to the president opposing the project, saying that it would increase the risk of flooding in predominantly black communities in southern Illinois.

The project involves closing a 1,500 foot gap in the Mississippi River levee system, and constructing a 1,500 cubic feet per second pumping station in the New Madrid Floodway, as well as a 1,000 cfs pump station in the St. John's Bayou Basin........

Boat Sales

Bellwether Report:  Boat Sales Gains Continue.........

According to Info-Link's current Bellwether report, boat sales in the U.S. are still hovering just under 10% higher than 2013, through November.

The report tracks boat sales around the country based on new vessel registrations.  Bellwether states represent roughly half of the boat market in the U.S..  This varies by the time of the year and market segment.

So far this year, all segments of the market saw increases in year-over-year sales, except the sterndrive/jet market, which saw a decrease of about 5% in the Bellwether states........

NMMA Amid Visit To Cuba, And President's Announcement........

Last Friday, the National Marine Manufacturers Association wrapped up their visit to Cuba, only days before President Obama announced that he wants to see the long standing trade embargo lifted.

NMMA export director Julie Balzano says that they take the research trips because there is much misinformation about Cuba, the trade embargo, the opportunities, and what the competitors are doing.

What the NMMA found is that Cuba's marine infrastructure is sound, however, it is in a state of disrepair following 54 years under the embargo, and under the control of a communist government........

Boat Documentation

Coast Guard Fee Drawing Boater's Ire........

AS of November 10, 2014, the U.S. Coast Guard began charging a $26 fee for each year that boaters renew their U.S. Coast Guard documentation.  The Coast Guard used to renew the documentation at no charge.

The USCG documentation is typically optional for recreational vessels, but it is required for most commercial vessels weighing over 5 tons.  Recreational vessels may be documented for financing, as banks like seeing a clean ownership record.

David Kennedy, of Government Affairs at BoatUS says that documentation is mainly designed for commercial vessels, however, documentation is helpful for recreational vessels when visiting foreign ports.........

Boat Security

Security Systems Offers Boaters Piece Of Mind........

As a rule, most boats are not very secure.  Absentee owners, open hatches, and pricy electronics are quite tempting to thieves.  Thankfully, there are a wide variety of security systems available to help deter trespassers.

There are three types of alarm systems:

○  A local alarm, which alerts people in the vicinity when tripped.

○  An alarm that offers remote communication, via cell or satellite phone, voice, text, or email.

○  An interactive alarm, which allows the owner to respond........

Radium Levels In Groundwater Higher Than Federal Standards........

The Environmental Protection Agency requested a report from the U.S. Geological Survey looking at the radium concentrations in groundwater under the West Lake Landfill.  The report found that some samples contained radium levels higher than federal standards.

The source of the radium is in question.  It is not certain whether the higher concentrations of radium are because of seepage from the landfill, or if the radium is naturally occurring.  EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said that the source of the radium cannot be determined by the data collected so far.

The USGS report does say that the aquifers below the West Lake Landfill typically flow toward the Missouri River.  There is some concern that the contaminates could migrate to the river.  A drinking water intake is located downstream........

Black Leaders Oppose Missouri Levee Project........

The proposed New Madrid Floodway project is intended to protect a portion of rich Missouri agricultural land from frequent Missouri River flooding.  The project, which was originally proposed in 1954, would involve closing an opening a quarter mile long in the southern end of a levee system.

On Tuesday, community leaders penned a letter to President Obama stating that the New Madrid Floodway Project would increase flooding concerns in the predominately black communities around Cairo, Illinois.

Senior water resources council for the National Wildlife Federation, Melissa Samet says that the New Madrid Floodway Project would remove the last area that the Mississippi River could flow into it's natural flood plain in Missouri........
