    Mississippi River Sediment ReUse

Over the past year, the US Army Corps of Engineers has reused roughly 9 million cubic yards of sediment material removed from the bottom of the Mississippi River to create wetlands near Southwest Pass.

That is about about 60 percent of the sediment dredged from the river.  The sediment was once considered waste material.

Marathon Marina

We are nearing two weeks here at Marathon Marina and we are impressed! Not only for the view, which is one reason we came here, but for some other things as well.
The marina is not brand new, but it's clean. There are several restrooms and showers scattered around the premises and they are all kept in pristine condition.
Bikes are only allowed in bike racks, none are on the docks, in fact, no personal items are cluttering the docks and pier fingers.
Plenty of residents have dogs, but all are kept on leashes. Even the staff members who have dogs keep their dogs on leashes. This sets a good example for everyone else and pets aren't allowed to roam around and crap on everything.
The workout room is small, but there are adequate windows. Rosie has been using it almost daily. I haven't gotten the urge yet.
We have cable T.V. now, and since mail is easy to get, we've signed up for Netflix and we are getting DVD movies to watch.
Packages and mail come right to the office and we don't have to go searching for them, and there is no extra charge to get either service.
Electricity is included on our rent, which will be a big plus when summer comes when we have to run our A/C units. We might still be here then.

The plan to rehabilitate the historic Miami Marine Stadium and the surrounding area fell through last week when Miami officials rejected a privately funded proposal from a non-profit group.

This decision will not affect the plans for the Miami International Boat Show to take place there in 2016 and 2017.  It only means that the city of Miami will be the landlord for the show and the the city of Miami is committed to having the Miami International Boat Show at the Miami Marine Stadium in 2016.

    Platt Landing Boat Ramp

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) on Nov. 25 presented a $450,000 check to Platte County officials to assist with the costs for a new boat launching ramp and parking lot at Parkville's Platte Landing Park. MDC provided the money under its Community Assistance Program to build the ramp's entrance road, parking lot and restrooms.

The project is a partnership between MDC, Platte County parks, Parkville and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Boaters, anglers and public safety authorities had no reliable place to launch boats in the Missouri River on the Missouri side immediately upstream of Kansas City prior to the ramp construction

  Invasive Species

Getting Rid of Them With a Little Electric Shock

There are a number of preventative measures in place to keep invasives from entering new waters. But at present there are few measures that fisheries managers can use to get rid of invasive fish once theyíve established themselves: basically, toxic chemicals, or targeted fishing.

But a better remedy may be as simple as a small dose of electricity. Thatís the idea behind a recent study, which found that electrically charged wands can help eradicate invasive fish in small streams with less collateral damage to the ecosystem.

The standard response in other waterways has been to use toxic chemicals called piscicides. But these chemicals are problematic Ė they kill native and invasive fish alike, and also kill many of the aquatic insects that fish eat, says Reuben Goforth, a professor at Purdue University.

So the Montana team wanted to try a better way. They turned to backpack electrofishing, a technique thatís widely used at present to sample fish populations. It works like this: Researchers carry backpacks with electricity generators powered by 24-volt batteries. Those generators are hooked up to wands that carry a flow of positive electric charges. (If youíre imagining a setup that looks like the Ghostbusters proton pack, youíre not far off.) The researchers dunk the wands into streams. Soon, fish begin to cluster near the positive charges, a phenomenon known as galvanotaxis.

With both natives and invasives gathered, the researchers send an electric burst of 100 to 600 volts into the water, which stuns the fish. The researchers net the temporarily immobilized fish, separate out the invasives (which can be cooked) and return the natives to the stream.
