Hey Bill!

The Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS) had our annual Fall Cruise on Saturday, Oct 22nd. We had a total of 7 boats with vintages covering the 50's & 60's head up the IL river for some fall color sight seeing. Including passengers & crews, we had over 40 folks along for the ride. What a beautiful day on the river we had!

Here are pics of the bluff at MM 13 from yesterday and the same shot 3 weeks ago and a few shots of the boats. We truly are blessed to be able to see such beauty while enjoying our passion for classic boats!

Memphis Tennessee

Mississippi River Closure at Grain Harvest

The US Army Corps of Engineers has closed down a three-mile stretch of the Mississippi River between Memphis, Tennessee and Greenville, Mississippi.  They are laying mats to reinforce a washed-out area.

The Waterways Council stated that this reinforcing work could be done anytime.  Currently it is the most critical part of a record harvest season.

The US Army Corps of Engineers stated that the work can only be done while the Mississippi River is low and that the reinforcing work needs to be done to ensure that future floods waters will not threaten the levees.

The US Coast Guard reported that seven towboats with barges were waiting to go upriver and 15 were waiting to go downriver on Saturday afternoon because of the river closure.

Corps Considering Shutting Down River Traffic Early

According to a news report in WQAD8.com the US Army Corps of Engineers is considering closing down the Mississippi River traffic near St. Louis earlier than expected.

This could happen by December 10th if we don’t get some good rains soon. There has not been significant rainfall up-river and water will be diverted from the Missouri River starting December 1st.

Almost 80-percent of the flow passing the Arch in St. Louis comes from the Missouri River.

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2013.........  were sent to us Jan DeSherlia of Grafton Harbor

Hey Bill,

St. Somewhere has been commandeered (sold) by Captain Dave and is scallywag crew-first mate Cindy, swabby-first class Ben and new river dog Daisy.(actually Daisy may be the captain?) Kim and I only cried for a few hours. But, we take great comfort in knowing she's will be taken good care of by her new river family. If you see them out give them a river pirate salute.

We will introduce you soon. They are great people. Here is what they sent us from last weekend. Not too many of them left. Enjoy while you can, and endure when you must! If you see us on the river bank with your thumbs out, will you pick us up?

Dear everyone,

My dog has hijacked the boat and is holding me hostage. In this picture she is forcing me to smile and making it look like I am having fun and on this trip on my own free will. You can't see it because of my sunglasses but, I am blinking out S.O.S. because, we only have 5 beers, 23 bucks, a bag of Cheetos and a ham sandwich left.

From what I can tell, we are apparently headed down the Mississippi to the Caribbean.  As you can surely imagine,  I will really, really, really miss you. Please have the Coast Guard airdrop in more of the above mentioned supplies. Advise them to hold off any attempt to save me though just yet. I will get back to you soon.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...... I might be a little late getting to work.  This dog is forcing me to stop at the next town and load a bunch of rum and pineapple juice on the boat all by myself. Damn those mean pirate dogs.

Donate all my stuff to someone.

Cap'n Dave and Salty Dog Daisy.

United States Federal Court

Iowa Man Sentenced to Prison For Killing Bald Eagle

A 36 year old man received a 60 day prison sentence in federal court on Thursday for killing a bald eagle in March of 2011.

Jason John Thomas spotted the eagle while boating on the South Skunk River in Mahaska County, Iowa. He pursued the eagle down, captured it when it landed on the water and then killed it. Thomas cut off the bird's head and talons and threw the rest of the bird into the river.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources conducted the investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

The Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower is a 180-foot-tall (55 m) tower on the Illinois bank of the Mississippi River at the confluence of it and the Missouri River. The tower complements the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site, about one mile to the south, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition made winter camp before setting up the Missouri river.

The tower has platforms at 50, 100, and 150 feet, providing a good view of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Downtown St. Louis and the Gateway Arch can also be seen from the tower.[2] The tower contains two legs joined by viewing platforms, with an elevator in one leg and stairs in the other.[1] Its construction, lasting from 2002 to 2010, was funded by $5 million from local and state sources.

Releases On The Missouri River Ahead Of Schedule........

Water releases from the Fort Randall and Gavins Point Dams are running ahead of schedule, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is slowing the outflow.  The reduction in releases started Thursday, and will continue over the next four days, dropping the river level about two to three feet.  Higher releases from the upstream Missouri River reservoirs started back in September to remove the above normal runoff, freeing up additional flood storage capacity........

Kaskaskia River

Lock and dam renamed to honor former Illinois congressman

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District hosted a ceremony here today to rename the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam in honor of former U.S. Congressman Jerry F. Costello.

The Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014 re-designated the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam. Costello served in Illinois’ 12th Congressional District from 1988 to 2012, and has been a proponent of transportation infrastructure and Kaskaskia River interests for many years.

Costello has been an ardent supporter of Southern Illinois and the Kaskaskia River Watershed for years. During his 24 years in the House, Costello played an integral role in the success of the Kaskaskia River Project which has lead to development and economic growth.

Stakeholders praised the work Costello did during his tenure in Congress, helping keep the project funded and working with stakeholders.

"Mr. Costello knew we needed to maintain our infrastructure," said Ed Weilbacher, director of the Kaskaskia Regional Port District. "He represented this district well. He listened to and heard his constituents... Each year he would go to bat for this facility."

The Lock and Dam is located on the Kaskaskia River nearly a mile upstream of the confluence with the Mississippi River near Modoc, Ill. A part of the larger Kaskaskia River Project, the dam provides approximately 36 miles of navigable waterway for barge traffic from Fayetteville to the Mississippi River. St. Louis District began construction in 1967, and the project became operational on November 9, 1973.

“This is a great opportunity to recognize Congressman Costello and the many benefits that our region and nation have received from his years of hard work,” said Col. Anthony Mitchell, St. Louis District commander. “I am honored to celebrate this momentous occasion with all of the diverse interests the Congressman has brought together in the Kaskaskia River Watershed.”

In addition to navigation, the Kaskaskia River Project provides for water supply, habitat for fish and wildlife, and recreation on and off the river. Traffic on the river varies from barge traffic carrying grain, slag, coiled steel, and limestone, to small recreational pleasure craft. The Lock and Dam also provides an opportunity for safe harbor for those wishing to tie off away from the Mississippi River.

In his remarks, Costello stressed the importance of partnership among members of the Lower Kaskaskia Stakeholders Inc., who he credits with uniting the voices of diverse interests along the river.

"I could talk all day about this project and all the people in this room," he said. "I thank all of you. We wouldn't be here today without you.

Kaskaskia Lock and Dam Renaming Ceremony

CARLYLE LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting a ceremony on Thursday, November 6, 2014 to commemorate the renaming of the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam. The ceremony will take place at the Kaskaskia River Project Lock and Dam Upstream Boat Ramp at 10:00 a.m.

The renaming of the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam was included in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014 which was signed on June 10, 2014. WRRDA is the primary legislation that authorizes the Corps of Engineers key civil works missions including navigation, flood risk management and environmental restoration. The authority that is provided in WRRDA helps the Corps of Engineers to fulfill its mission of developing and maintaining the nation’s waterways and harbors, reducing damages from storms, and restoring the environment.

While serving in Illinois’ 12th Congressional District from 1988-2013, The Honorable Jerry Costello was an avid supporter of the Kaskaskia River Watershed. His involvement with the river and the community ensured that the Kaskaskia River remained open to barge traffic, increasing the economic value of the surrounding communities. Mr. Costello’s enthusiasm, dedication, and unwavering support for the Kaskaskia River Watershed is evident in the success he achieved during his years of service.

Following the renaming ceremony, the Lower Kaskaskia Stakeholders, Inc. and the Kaskaskia River Port District will host a reception with refreshments for those in attendance.

Please RSVP online by October 30, 2014 at http://bit.ly/CostellLockandDam or by calling the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484.
