Picture of the Day ..... was sent to us by Claudia Burris who hails out of Hoppie's Marina in Kimmswick, Mo......

Hi Bill !

Meet Allan Leslie and David Ripley, old friends from Nova Scotia, Canada. Their journey began Sept. 28, 2014, when they trailered Leslie's "hillbilly houseboat" to Winona, Minn., about 60 miles south of Minneapolis.

They left Winona (Mile 725) on Oct. 2 and arrived at Hoppies Marina (Mile 158) on Oct. 16. "We've been boating for years," explains Ripley, who met Leslie while whitewater rafting many years ago. "We've done dozens of whitewater kayaking trips on the east coat. Then Allan got this crazy idea in his head to get this houseboat!"

The team has taken several trips in the 2011 homebuilt houseboat, including the Trent Severn Waterway in Ontario, the Rideau Canal in Ontario, St. John River in Maine, and even the Erie Canal! Ripley jumped ship in Kimmswick and Leslie's wife joined him for the rest of the trip to Mobile, Ala., where they plan on arriving Nov. 28. Sounds like quite
an adventure!

See you on the river!

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

    Grafton's Annual Rendezvous Was Sunday........

On Sunday, the Grafton riverfront hosted their annual rendezvous, which is a celebration of pre-1840s history.  The event features re-enactors in period attire, tomahawk throwing and musket shooting.  This is the 15th year for the rendezvous at Grafton, however, the event took a three year hiatus while the Grafton Marina was being built.  Typically, about 100 tents are present for the event, but this year, there were 41.  Event administrator Brad Gold attributes the low attendance on weather in the region.........

Mississippi River Infrastructure

Infrastructure Along The River Needs Work........

Last year, a bi-partisan caucus was formed to identify and address issues affecting those that live along and use the Mississippi River and it's tributaries.  The aging lock and dam system is an issue that will need to be dealt with sooner or later.  The head of the local Sierra Club, Christine Favilla says that non-structural solutions should be considered first.  Favilla added that the Sierra Club is not in favor of constructing or expanding the locks........

River History....

October 20, 1817 in River History

The 1st Mississippi "Showboat," left Nashville, Tennessee on its maiden voyage. Nashville is located on the Cumberland River.

According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia:
A showboat, or show boat, was a form of theater that traveled along the waterways of the United States, especially along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. A showboat was basically a barge that resembled a long, flat-roofed house, and in order to move down the river, it was pushed by a small tugboat (misleadingly labeled a towboat) which was attached to it. It would have been impossible to put a steam engine on it, since it would have had to have been placed right in the auditorium.
However, since the box-office success of MGM's 1951 motion picture version of the musical Show Boat, in which the boat was inaccurately redesigned as a deluxe, self-propelled steamboat, the image of a showboat as a twin-stacked steamboat with a huge paddle wheel has taken hold in popular culture

Missouri River Management

Higher Dam Releases To Curb Spring Flooding........

In order to lower the chances of flooding along the Missouri River this spring, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is releasing higher then normal amounts of water from the upstream reservoirs.  Between December 10 and the end of February, the Corps intends to keep releases from the Gavins Point Dam at 20,000 cubic feet per second.  Jody Farhat, chief of the Missouri River basin water management division said that the higher releases will guarantee that the total flood control storage capacity will be available........

  Upper Missouri River

Corps Working To Restore Flood-Ravaged Habitat........

During the flooding of 2011, the swollen Missouri River carried significant amounts of sediment downstream, and deposited it in backwater areas and side channels, cutting them off from the main channel.  This has reduced the habitat needed by some fish, including the endangered pallid sturgeon, to lay their eggs.  To reverse these changes, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is restoring these backwaters and side channels by dredging........

Picture of the Day ..... was sent to us by Claudia Burris who hails out of Hoppie's Marina in Kimmswick, Mo......

Hi Bill,

I was fortunate enough to meet these two characters from Harbor Point Marina at Hoppies last night!

Ed Lang and Larry Sinn had a plan... "We were either going to jet ski to Minneapolis or take a boat trip to Kentucky Lake," explains Larry, who has a 43 Carver at Harbor Point. Four boats from the Point made it down to Kentucky Lake, and the others came back a couple of weeks ago. Ed and Larry wanted to stay longer, because they are retired... The two never travel without their banjo and accordion which they use to entertain folks at the marinas. "We were the life of the party at Buzzard Rock," says Larry.

Frayed Knot, a 1988 Bayliner, should be pulling into Harbor Point later today. (10-17-14)

See you on the river!

UPDATE 2:

Coast Guard restricting vessel traffic on Chicago River to allow salvage of sunken barge

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard is enforcing a waterway restriction on the Chicago River between the Lake and Randolph Street Bridges, Saturday, until midnight while crews conduct salvage operations of the barge that sank Friday afternoon.

Commercial salvage crews are currently using a crane and a clamshell to transfer material from the sunken barge onto an empty barge to enable them to re-float the sunken barge.

There are no Coast Guard images or video available for this case.

Personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago have coordinated waterways management controls over the Chicago River after the barge broke free from its mooring Friday afternoon and sank in the river between the Lake and Randolph Street Bridges.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan learned of the incident at about 1:15 p.m., Friday. The barge was loaded with 750 yards of clay dirt. No injuries or pollution are reported.

Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan is broadcasting a broadcast notice to mariners over VHF-FM channel 16.

US Army Corps of Engineers

Kaskaskia Lock and Dam Renaming Ceremony

CARLYLE LAKE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting a ceremony on Thursday, November 6, 2014 to commemorate the renaming of the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam. The ceremony will take place at the Kaskaskia River Project Lock and Dam Upstream Boat Ramp at 10:00 a.m.

The renaming of the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam to the Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam was included in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014 which was signed on June 10, 2014. WRRDA is the primary legislation that authorizes the Corps of Engineers key civil works missions including navigation, flood risk management and environmental restoration. The authority that is provided in WRRDA helps the Corps of Engineers to fulfill its mission of developing and maintaining the nation’s waterways and harbors, reducing damages from storms, and restoring the environment.

While serving in Illinois’ 12th Congressional District from 1988-2013, The Honorable Jerry Costello was an avid supporter of the Kaskaskia River Watershed. His involvement with the river and the community ensured that the Kaskaskia River remained open to barge traffic, increasing the economic value of the surrounding communities. Mr. Costello’s enthusiasm, dedication, and unwavering support for the Kaskaskia River Watershed is evident in the success he achieved during his years of service.

Following the renaming ceremony, the Lower Kaskaskia Stakeholders, Inc. and the Kaskaskia River Port District will host a reception with refreshments for those in attendance.

Please RSVP online by October 30, 2014 at http://bit.ly/CostellLockandDam or by calling the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484.

USS Constitution

    Old Ironsides Heading For Restoration........

On Friday, the USS Constitution took a final cruise around Boston Harbor prior to embarking on a major restoration project.  The three mast frigate was propelled by a tugboat, and gave a 21 gun salute to Fort Independence, as well as a 17 gun salute at the U.S. Coast Guard's Boston base.  The Constitution's active duty Navy crew laid out a wreath in the harbor, in honor of the U.S. Navy's 239th birthday.  There were hundreds of dignitaries and special guests aboard for the cruise.  A Boston Pops quintet and the Dropkick Murphys provided entertainment during the cruise.

Restoration work on the Constitution will include replacement of worn rigging, replacing worn planks on the gun and berth decks, re-coppering the vessel's hull, as well as general repairs to the bow, stern, and the captain's cabin.  The vessel will be in dry dock for the repairs.  Work is estimated to take about three years, and will cost around $12 to $15 million.

The Constitution is the world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat.  She was constructed in Boston, and was launched in October 1797.  The Constitution was commissioned by the U.S. Navy following the Revolutionary War.  She earned her nickname, Old Ironsides after victories during the War of 1812........

US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard responding to sunken barge in Chicago River

Section of river closed during salvage operations

CHICAGO — Personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago are responding to a barge that broke free from its mooring Friday afternoon and sank in the Chicago River between the Lake and Randolph Street Bridges.

The Coast Guard was notified of the incident at about 1:15 p.m. The barge was loaded with 750 yards of clay being used for the Chicago River Walk Expansion project. There were no injuries and there are no reports of pollution.

To accommodate salvage operations by the owner of the barge, the Coast Guard will close the Chicago River between Lake and Randolph Street Bridges starting at 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. Saturday.

The river is expected to reopen in time for the scheduled bridge lift to allow recreational boaters to head inland with their vessels for winter layup. However, the river closure may continue after the scheduled bridge opening if the barge has not been refloated and moved to the west side of the river.

A broadcast notice to mariners is being released by Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan over channel 16.

For more information, contact the Coast Guard Marie Safety Unit Duty Officer at 630-336-0281.

River History....

October 18, 1847 in River History

Boatmen’s Bank, the oldest bank west of the Mississippi River, was established on this day in 1847.

The founder , George Knight Budd, arrived in St. Louis by the river aboard a steamer in 1835. After seeing the thriving commerce on Mississippi riverfront, he decided to settle in St. Louis !

In 1850 the river was the source of a disaster that spared the bank. Not a flood ! A fire that aboard a steamer on the St. Louis riverfront started a blaze that destroyed much of the city. The fire took more than 400 buildings and 23 steamers, but it spared the Boatmen's building ! It was left standing in the middle of the ashes of the structures around it.

Flooding Lawsuit Expands To Six States........

Recently, over 200 property owners, small businesses, and two Native American tribes in Nebraska have joined in a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking damages from recurrent flooding along the Missouri River.  The suit was originally filed in March 2014, and claims that the dramatic increase in frequency and severity of flooding of the Missouri River is due to changes in how the Corps is managing the river........

High River Levels Thwart Car Recovery Efforts........

During the recent Bass Pro Shops Big Cat Quest in New Madrid, some anglers discovered a submerged car in the Mississippi River while using sonar to find fish.  Divers have been tasked with recovering the car, however, high river levels have kept them from doing so.  It is thought that the submerged vehicle may be related to a missing woman.  83 year old Barbara Stoffer has been missing since August 2013........

Flood Fighting Church Raising Funds For Repairs........

During flood season, the Clarksville United Methodist Church helps feed the hundreds of volunteers that try to keep the Mississippi River at bay.  The town relies on the efforts of volunteers, as it cannot afford the annual flood fight.

When the flood of 2013 was happening, workers found water running down the inside of one of the church's stained glass windows.  The rain water is causing the stained glass to chip and fade.  The church has not received the final estimates on the repair work, however, restorers say that restoration could cost between $100,000 and $200,000........

Fall Color Outlook

    Alton CVB Monitoring Colors........

Sharon Tate, spokesperson for the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau says that the fall color change is the main tourist draw during the fall.  Thanks to the mild summer and the recent wet weather, no one cam really predict how long the colors may last, or how vivid they may be.  As a result, the CVB is keeping tabs on the changing colors each day, and can point visitors in the right direction for a fall color road trip........

River History....

October 17, 2013 in River History

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started the task of reopening all public facilities and recreation areas that were closed due to the government shutdown.

This included the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam and recreational facilities at area Corps of Engineers lakes. The Lock and Dams on the Mississippi River remained open.

The United States federal government entered a shutdown on October 1, 2013 and curtailed most routine operations after Congress failed to enact legislation appropriating funds for fiscal year 2014. The shut down ended on October 16, 2013 after House and Senate voted to reopen the government

Boat Sales

    Sizable Sales Gains In September........

During the month of September 2014, boat sales saw increases of close to 10 percent, not only in the main powerboat segment, but industry-wide as well.  Sales of aluminum fishing boats, pontoons and fiberglass outboards led the way, with an increase of 9.8%, or 469 vessels to 5,258.  According to Statistical Surveys' national marine sales manager Ryan Kloppe, these results were consistent with what happened last year.  Late springs seem to be extending the sales season........

Mississippi River Near Moline, Iowa

    River Conference Seeks Pollution Solutions........

Pollution is a major concern along the Mississippi River.  Nitrogen runoff into the river feeds the Gulf of Mexico dead zone.  During the Upper Mississippi River Conference, experts shared ideas intended to protect the river.  Michael Tarpey with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that a holistic approach to the pollution problem is preferable.  Saving the river begins on land.  Farmers prevent erosion off their land, meaning fewer pesticides and less soil will make to the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Road, Boat Launch Closed For Levee Work........

Street and boat launch closures have occurred around the Alton Marina, as crews start working on a project to alleviate levee under-seepage issues along the levee shielding Alton from the Mississippi River.  Sand boils are allowing water to seep under the levee into wetlands around Alton and Wood River.  The project will involve the excavation of a 30 foot deep trench so that a soil-bentonite slurry can be poured.  Once deposited, the slurry will bind with the sand below the levee to form a solid barrier........

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

The peak of fall color in Missouri is upon us

St. Louis Region:
Fall color in and around St. Louis has not progressed much since last week because of the warmer-than-usual weather, although the wind and rain have knocked down some of our early fall color. Most areas are still limited to individual colorful trees surrounded by lots of green; standouts include Virginia creeper, sumacs, poison ivy, ash, sassafras, black gum, dogwoods, and sugar maple. Some oaks and hickories have started to turn in a few spots, but most are still green. Expect color in our area to peak in ten days two weeks, if the weather doesn’t limit the display. Don’t forget to enjoy our fall flowers, including native asters and goldenrods, and the colors in our prairie grasses, such as little bluestem.

Click here for the latest information about the "Fall Colors" forecast.

Lake Ozark Joins Opposition Of Fed Redefinition Of Waters........

Back in April, the US Environmental Protection Agency proposed making changes to the Clean Water Act.  The proposed changes are intended to clarify the federal jurisdiction on waterways.  Recently, the City of Lake Ozark penned a letter to the EPA expressing their opposition to their Federal Redefinition of Waters.  Opponents of the changes are concerned that the new rules would broaden the coverage of the Clean Water Act........

Mark Twain Lake

Waterfowl Refuge and No Hunting Zones

Mark Twain Lake – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages a waterfowl refuge on the Middle Fork and Elk Fork branches on Mark Twain Lake during the waterfowl season. The refuge provides approximately 3,000 acres of habitat for migratory waterfowl to feed and rest before continuing south towards their wintering grounds.

The waterfowl refuge will be closed October 25, 2014 to December 23, 2014. The refuge will be posted with signs and lake buoys to indicate the prohibition of all boat traffic and waterfowl hunting. However, land-based activities, such as bank fishing, waterfowl viewing, and other in-season hunting is permitted.

Hunters are also cautioned that other designated no-hunting zones exist in various recreation areas around the lake. These zones protect visitors who are hiking, camping, and fishing during the hunting seasons. Review our maps and brochures for the locations of these areas. Please remember to hunt responsibly and respect the rights of landowners adjacent to public lands.

For further information, please contact the Mark Twain Lake Project Office, 20642 Highway J, Monroe City, Missouri 63456, or telephone (573) 735-4097.
