Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2012 ----    was sent to us by Capt'n Ernie Moretti, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser..... "Living on Spongecake."

Hi Bill:

Maybe it’s because I had poor social skills, but when I was a kid, my Mom used to tie pork chops around my neck and send me out to the yard hoping the dogs would play with me? Years later, I am but an OLD DOG myself! But…things haven’t changed too much. Nowadays, my wife Sue sends me out to the back of our boat; sets up a couple tables full of cups of Margaritas; and hopes people will come by to play with me?

FYI…It worked!

See you on the River…
Ernie Moretti

Missouri River Management

Corps To Increase Releases From Reservoirs........

Thanks to this year's high levels of precipitation, the Missouri River Watershed is very saturated.  As a result, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be increasing releases from the dams dotting the Upper Missouri River Basin.  The Corps is planning to release about 18% more water between December and February.  The higher water levels will not only generate more electricity, but it will also extend the navigation season........

Wappapello Lake

Festival of Lights Christmas Auto Tour

Wappapello Lake – The 22nd Annual Festival of Lights Christmas Auto Tour will be held in the Redman Creek East Campground at Wappapello Lake. The event is scheduled to begin November 28, 2014, and will run through December 28, 2014. The Festival of Lights will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights from dusk until 9 p.m. until December 19, when it opens on a nightly basis until closing on December 28. This event is held in partnership with the Wappapello Lions Club and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake. With the help of local businesses, volunteers, churches, and other organizations within the community, it is speculated that this year’s event will be bigger and better than ever.

Those wishing to take part in this year’s event are encouraged to contact the Wappapello Lake Project Office and register for a campsite to decorate. Campsites are free of charge and all electricity is free. Decorators can begin their work starting on November 8 and are asked to have it completed by November 28 at 5 p.m.

With your help we can make the 22nd Annual Festival of Lights Auto Tour the best it has ever been. Make plans to be a part of this year’s event. If you have questions or comments, please call the Wappapello Lake Project Office at 573-222-8562 and ask to talk to Park Ranger John Daves.

The Blood Moon

from Wikipedia

The Blood Moon Prophecy is an idea popularized by Christian pastors John Hagee and Mark Biltz, which states that an ongoing tetrad (a series of four consecutive total lunar eclipses, with six full moons in between, and no intervening partial lunar eclipses) which began with the April 2014 lunar eclipse is a sign of the end times.

News Release From BoatUS

Better Have BoatUS Mechanical Breakdown Coverage for Drive Units

ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 8, 2014 – Many boat insurance policies will cover accidental damage to an outboard or stern drive unit, often as the result of hitting something. But what happens when the unit simply wears out or fails due to some bad luck? BoatUS now offers Mechanical Breakdown coverage for drive units that can be added to any BoatUS Yacht Policy (agreed value) for boats less than 10 years old for as little as $23 a year. The BoatUS insurance policy endorsement, which covers wear and tear, is “triggered” when the prop no longer turns due to a mechanical failure.

“There aren’t a lot of boat insurers that offer this coverage, and when they do, it’s offered at a fixed price,” said BoatUS Vice President of Underwriting Mike Pellerin. “We price ours on a sliding scale that adjusts as the risk changes, meaning you’re likely to pay less over time with BoatUS. There are also no restrictions on using a repair facility of your choice, there are no depreciation adjustments, and we cover ‘wear and tear’, such as when gears are worn away after repeated hard shifting.”

Some of the items covered with the new Mechanical Breakdown coverage endorsement include an outboard’s lower unit case housing, both prop and vertical drive shafts, forward, reverse and pinion gears, sliding clutch and cross pin, bearings and carrier, shift cams and shafts, races, and propellers. For stern drives, also known as inboard/outboards, upper unit covered items include the vertical drive shaft, housing and coupler, gears, bearings, cone clutch, shift fork, cam and follower, shaft assembly, u-joints and yolks. Lower stern drive unit coverage includes the gear case housing, both prop and vertical drive shafts, forward, reverse and pinion gears, sliding clutch, bearings and carrier, races, shift shaft, cam and follower and propeller. A full list of covered parts along with policy exclusions and limitations can be found at BoatUS.com/insurance/mbcoverage. Mechanical breakdown coverage does not apply to any engine internal components.

There is a $250 deductible for each unit, and manufacturer required maintenance must be performed at the required service intervals. Mechanical Breakdown coverage is available in most states and it must be purchased before a boat reaches 10 years from the date of manufacture.

Mechanical Breakdown Coverage is just the latest innovative boat insurance offering from the nation’s oldest and largest recreational boat owners group. Over 45 years ago BoatUS was the first to offer recreational boat insurance policies issued in consumer-friendly, plain English rather than the Old English of Lloyds of London. Today’s unique damage and injury avoidance program offers insureds its own helpful magazine – Seaworthy, as well as a fishing tournament reimbursement program, a cruisers “up front” cruising ground extension option, and the only hurricane damage prevention program to help keep boats out of harm’s way are all BoatUS innovations.

All BoatUS insurance policies offer 24-hour dispatched on road and on water towing services with the largest recreational boat fleet in the nation, full salvage assistance, diminishing deductibles and hurricane haul-out coverage. For more information on Mechanical Breakdown Coverage or any BoatUS specialized marine insurance program, call the BoatUS marine insurance specialists at 800-283-2883.

On Tuesday, the former Argosy Sioux City riverboat casino began her journey down the Missouri River to her new home in Wood River, Illinois.  The vessel is a replica of a 1920's paddlewheeler.  The casino was forced to shut down by Iowa state gaming officials at the end of July.  Mike's Inc. of Wood River purchased the boat and two barges.  The barges remain on-site, and are being dismantled.  The boat will either be sold, or dismantled for scrap as well........

Lake Of The Ozarks

    Records Set During LOTO Shootout........

During the 10 days of the 2014 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, several records were set.  The Shootout is really a fundraiser for those in need in the Lake of the Ozarks area.  During the event, Shootout events raised $125,000 for 19 organizations and six area fire districts.

There was a new speed record set this year. Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor Al-Thani shattered the previous speed record of 224 mph.  Al-Thani's Al Adaa'am Spirit of Qater catamaran ran a blistering 244 mph.

This year, there was a record number boats racing on Saturday, totaling 98.  Spectator numbers were down during 2014, approximately 80,000 people attended Shootout events.  During 2013, there were approximately 110,000 spectators for the Shootout events.  It is thought that extreme heat played a factor in the attendance drop........

Mississippi River Near Gretna, Louisiana

Federal Grant Funds Boat Ramp After Oil Spill........

Back in August, two vessels collided on the Mississippi River Near Gretna, Louisiana, spilling 580 gallons of oil.  Federal and state responders responded to the scene, however, their response was delayed a little bit, as there are no convenient boat ramps in the area.  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded a $1 million grant to Jefferson Parish for the construction of a boat launch........

Coast Guard rescues 2 from grounded sailboat in southern Lake Michigan

CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued two men in southern Lake Michigan after their sailboat ran aground Monday evening.

The names of the men are not being released and there is no Coast Guard imagery or video associated with the case.

Just before 6:30 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee received a mayday call over VHF-FM channel 16 from the men aboard a 37-foot white sloop. It was reported that their vessel had run aground on rocks approximately 100 yards east of Coast Guard Station St. Joseph, Michigan. The vessel was not taking on water.

Sector Lake Michigan watchstanders directed the launch of a Station St. Joseph boat crew, aboard a 45-foot response boat, and issued an urgent marine information broadcast which advises mariners of a situation, asks them to keep a sharp lookout, to report all sightings to the nearest Coast Guard unit and to assist if possible.

The rescue crew arrived on scene within minutes and assessed the situation. They found that the sailboat was not hard aground on the rocks, but instead stuck between two pilings. The rescue crew used lines to pull the grounded vessel free and then towed it to West Basin Marina in St. Joseph.

"As this rescue shows, having a reliable way to call for help is very important, said Mike Baron, the recreational boating safety specialist for the Coast Guard 9th District in Cleveland. "Because of their radio, the men were able to alert the Coast Guard and get help quickly."

No pollution or injuries were reported.

News Release From BoatUS

New Premium Boat Graphics Service by BoatUS Comes With Your Own Private Designer
Custom Boat Graphics in as Little as 2-3 Business Days

ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 7, 2014 – Boat names are as varied as boat owners. However, owners looking for something special to put on their vessel now have a new premium level Custom Boat Graphics service from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) that includes the services of their own private designer. The new Custom Boat Graphics service is for boaters who want something more than just boat name lettering, but who may not have the time or creative talent to design their artwork. “Boaters only need to come to us with an idea, and in as little as two to three business days we have a custom designed artwork ready for installation -- not just a boat name -- delivered to their door,” said Boat Graphics Specialist Ron Crittendon.

Crittendon says having the services of your own private designer can help you get the graphics you are looking for. “We use in-house designers that offer a range of styles, for example, from artists who specialize in Tahitian designs popular today with West Coast boaters to more traditional looks favored in New England. Boaters start by submitting a request online at BoatUS.com/customboatgraphics, or by calling 800-937-3300.

“After that, we aim for a high level of customer service and detail that you can’t find with competitors. For example, we had a request to design a graphic of a loving couple dancing above the name on their boat. But we wanted to know what kind of dancing – should the couple be in an embrace of a ballroom tango, or are they swing dancing? It’s that level of detail your own private designer can bring when using our Custom Boat Graphics service,” said Crittendon.

Adding to the high level of care is the 30-day “Oops Assurance Guarantee” on all BoatUS graphics. The Guarantee allows buyers to receive replacement decals free of charge if the graphic was damaged during installation. If getting the creative juices flowing is a challenge, BoatUS also has a list over 9000 names submitted over the last two decades as well as annual Top Ten Boat Names lists to help owners find the right choice. For more, go to BoatUS.com/customboatgraphics.

Burial Grounds Dot The Mississippi River Valley........

The ancient Native Americans typically buried their dead atop the bluffs that overlook the rivers.  They believed that spirits of the dead journey through the centuries before ascending into enlightenment.  Paula Cross, senior staff archaeologist with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency said that there were almost certainly ancient Indians buried at the site of The Palisades in Grafton.  She added that there were likely many burials at the site........

News Release From BoatUS

For Paddlers, It's High Season for Safety

ANNAPOLIS, Md., October 6, 2014 – It may be sunny outside with blue skies above, but waters are deceptively cold and unforgiving in the fall. For paddlers with just a few inches of freeboard to spare, getting wet this time of year can have serious consequences, so the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has these seven tips for fall paddlecraft safety.

Know how to re-board: All paddlecraft are different, so before you hit a lonely, remote stretch of river or bay, learn (in a safe place) how to get back in the boat quickly and efficiently as hypothermia is a threat that increases by the minute. Some paddlers add extra floatation inside the boat as it can help reboarding. (Tip: this can be accomplished simply by inflating a beach ball or purchasing aftermarket float bags). If you do ever fall out and can’t get back in, stay with the kayak or canoe – it’s a bigger target for rescuers to see.

Don’t keep it a secret: Tell people where you’re going by filing a float plan. It could be as simple as telling your spouse, in writing, where you are going and what time you plan to return. Writing it down makes it become habit. Be as specific as you can – this isn’t the time to forget to mention you’re heading to your hidden fishing hole two miles off the beaten channel.

Understand the basic rules of navigation: You may not be out there with icebreakers just yet, but there may still be some recreational boating traffic and potential ship traffic. The simple challenge is the smallest boats are hardest to see. One simple tip to help visibility is to spray the tips of your paddles a bright color. Paddlers also can help themselves by understanding some basic rules of navigation.

Don’t leave without a bailer: With low freeboard -- or the distance from the water to the gunwale -- paddlecraft are prone to getting water aboard. Once it starts, it’s only a matter of time before your canoe or kayak becomes ever lower to oncoming waves. Keep water out and buoyancy up by having a bailer ready (Tip: tie one to each seat).

Thermal up or down: Neoprene gloves, a drysuit or wetsuit tops and hats are the ultimate protection in retaining body heat this time of year. However, have outdoor gear that offers versatility by being able to cool down or warm up when appropriate. Even if it may feel like summer, never leave shore in just a t-shirt and shorts. It only takes just a short change of weather or a dunking to drench you and the hypothermia clock starts ticking. A bright colored rain parka can also be seen at great distances.

Going remote? Go Personal Locator Beacon (PLB): Advances in GPS technology have brought down the cost of personal locator beacons, but if your budget is tight you can still rent a PLB from the BoatUS Foundation for $45 weekly, plus shipping. There are no additional subscriber fees and paddlers going to remote locations can order online at BoatUS.org/epirb or call 888-663-7472 (Tip: mention code “DISC10” for a 10% discount on the weekly PLB rental rate through December 1, 2014).

Keep it secure up top: If you need to get your favorite kayak or stand-up paddleboard to the lake on your car or truck’s roof this fall, go to BoatUS.com/addingpaddlecraft for a quick read on the three basic types of roof rack systems and ways to safely tie down the load. Your kayak has no desire to meet the road or become a hazard for oncoming vehicles.

Annual Halloween Walk at Mark Twain Lake Oct. 17 & 18

Mark Twain Lake – It’s that time of year again when the Indian Creek Campground at Mark Twain Lake is invaded by a full cast of creepy characters! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proud to announce the return of the Annual Halloween Walk on both Friday, October 17 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm and Saturday, October 18 from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm.. This is a great chance for the little ones to “sharpen their trick-or-treating skills” or for the older ones to come see what all the excitement is about. Everyone is invited to come in costume and don’t forget your flashlight!

The Fox and Eagle Point loops will be closed to all vehicle traffic during event hours. In order to provide a safe experience for participants and visitors you are asked to leave your pets at home.

The Mark Twain Lake Chamber of Commerce will be charging an admission fee of $5.00 per vehicle for each night of the event to help provide park visitor safety services for the event and other incidental expenses related to the event. Only registered campers who have paid a camping fee and show their correlating white hang tag will be exempt from this charge. The charge will not be taken at the fee booth but rather at the entrance to the East Campground, where the event takes place. Having exact change upon approaching the event will help expedite wait time and reduce long lines at the entry point.

The M.W. Boudreaux Memorial Visitor Center at the south end of Cannon Dam will be closed October 17 – October 19 in order for staff members to work at the Halloween event.
The Indian Creek Campground is located south of Monroe City. Take Highway 24 to State Road HH. Follow the signs to spooky fun! All reservable campsites have been reserved but non-reservable sites will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis in person only. If you need additional information about the event, please contact the Mark Twain Lake Project Office at 573-735-4097 or email us at marktwaininfo@usace.army.mil
