Hey Bill
Took my neighbor Freda out paddling Saturday. We made it up to Elsah Bar just a couple miles against the current. Is hard to believe there aren't hundreds of people out here.

Posted some pictures from the Past Commodores Party on the Con Trios Yacht Club website www.contriosyachtclub.com .  More to come.  Great day, great friends, great food!  Immediate Past Commodore Alan and Julie put together an excellent day for us at Port Charles Harbor (first time ever for Con Trios to hold an event there).  The setting could not have been better amongst the trees on the river bank.  Double Down played tunes all day while Past Commodores Mike Tremmel and Bill Mixon along with Linda put together a feast of a buffet.  The Past Commodores present included Mike Ramirez 2000, Carl Tiemann 2005, Sonny Robbins 1991, Jim Svoboda 2006, Fred Cross 1985, Bill Tullock 2013, Tom Anderson 2001, Tim Tighe 2007, Darryll Weil 2010, Alan Deustschmann 2012, Mike Tremmel 1999, Bill Mixon 1996, Gary Meinershagen 2008, Scott Hickey 2011 and Web Morrow 1995.

Fall has arrived, and many people are trying to enjoy the last few days of warm weather, which can be a bit deceptive.  The U.S. Coast Guard recently issued a reminder to boaters and beach-goers that even though the temperatures may feel warm, the water is significantly cooler.  It does not take long for hypothermia to set in for swimmers, or boaters that find themselves in the water, which can be fatal........

River Shipping

     Barge Freight Increases........

This fall, record corn and soybean crops are expected to be harvested, and with both being shipped down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, barges are a hot commodity.  While shipping by barge is cheaper than shipping by rail cars or truck, freight costs are increasing.  At this time, the year-to-date tonnage aboard grain barges are 30% higher than the three year average, and are the highest since 2010........

     Dealing With A Fire Onboard........

BoatUS recently posted an article describing how a couple aboard their 44 foot catamaran Pegasus dealt with a fire that suddenly broke out.  The fire began when a wake hit the catamaran while lighting a fragrance lantern called a Lampe Berger.  The lantern was dropped, shattering it.  The pressurized gas ignited violently, setting the cabin sole on fire.  Luckily, a handy fire extinguisher kept the damage to a minimum........

     West Virginia Accepting Fracking Bids........

Officials in West Virginia are considering allowing companies to drill for oil and natural gas below 14 miles of the Ohio River.  State commerce officials opened bids for the drilling on Friday.  Citizen groups and environmentalists are dismayed by the plan, which would allow a drilling technique called hydraulic fracturing, or more commonly fracking, to take place a mile below the Ohio River, which is a source of drinking water for millions of people........

Missouri River Near Fort Benton, Montana

EarthCache Trail Teaches Floaters About Geology........

Recently, the Missouri River Interpretive Center put together an EarthCache trail, that features 19 sites that are situated throughout the Upper Missouri River Breaks.  These sites allow floaters to learn about the geology of a site, without having a geologist or ranger present.  EarthCaches are similar to geocaches, in that searchers are led to specific GPS coordinates of unique geological formations........

Hi Bill,

I just met these folks down at Hoppies. They are canoeing from Ottowa,
Canada, to Florida and then will continue to do the loop in their canoe!
They are staying today because they heard about "great pie" at the Blue
Owl Restaurant in Kimmswick. Then they will continue on their journey.

See you on the river!

Corps Considers Re-Opening Silted In Channel........

St. Charles officials believe that U.S Army Corps of Engineers' plans for re-creating the side channel between the Missouri River shore and an island park could generate new development south of Interstate 70.  Currently, the channel is a silted-in slough that is dry, except during times of high water.  The city is interested in the plan because of economic development along the shoreline.  The Corps is interested in the plan to help the endangered pallid sturgeon........

Comments Sought On Riverlands Conservation Areas........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is in the process of updating their Conservation Area Management Plans, and they would like public comments on how the conservation areas are essential to Missourians.  The Riverlands Conservation Areas are publicly owned or managed properties lining both banks of the Missouri River between Mile Markers 110 and 195.  The point of these conservation areas is to reconnect the river with it's flood plains.  The draft plan for the Riverlands Conservation Areas will be posted for public review during the month of October........

      Lakefront House Damaged In Fire........

Friday evening, residents in Big Thunder Cove noticed flames raging out of a lakefront home, near the former Big Thunder Marina.  When responders arrived, boaters were gathering in front of the home's dock.  Firefighters from the Gravois Fire Protection District were originally called out for a natural cover fire, and they turned out prepared for what they though was a natural cover fire.  As a result, they did not have all the items necessary to fight a house fire until backup arrived........

Hi Bill,

Went to Lake Ozark yesterday to see the boat show at Captain Ron's. Did some snooping and found the remains on the tour boat Captain Larry Don that sank this past winter. It's across the street from Stewart's Restaurant back in a cove. From the looks of it, it will never be returned to it's former glory.

Below is a link to a "Wikipedia" history of the boat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Don

As far as the boat show goes it was a small show but a nice cross section of boats geared for the lake.

Also saw the original pirate boat "Gypse Rose". Took a couple of pictures it but because the boat was between me and the sun they didn't turn out, All I got was silhouette's

Mississippi River At The Chain Of Rocks

What Are The Castles In The Mississippi River?

This week, KSDK's Heidi Glaus fielded a question inquiring about the castle-like structures in the Mississippi River just south of the Chain of Rocks Bridge.  The structures are water intakes, dating back to the turn of the 20th Century.  Intake water tower No. 1 was constructed during the early 1890s, and is located closer to the Missouri shoreline.  Intake No. 2 was built between 1913 and 1915.  Both towers brought water from the Mississippi River into the Chain of Rocks.  Neither are still in use........

River Shipping

Huge Harvest Coming Up, Shipping Infrastructure Lagging Behind........

While a huge harvest is getting ready to come in, the shipping infrastructure at the heart of the nation's agriculture economy is sorely lagging behind.  The river shipping system is hobbled by increases in demand for shipping capacity, low numbers of available barges, and a decrepit lock system.  Industry officials are saying that after decades of neglect, the inland waterways network is but one flood, drought or mechanical breakdown from catastrophe........

Summer Rains Leave River Levels High........

After the flooding of 2011, Dakota Dunes modified the levees that protect the planned community from the Missouri River.  This past summer, torrential rains caused the Missouri River to rise to levels not seen since the levee improvements were made, providing a valuable test of the levees.  Jeff Dooley, manager of the Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District says that they wanted to see the higher water levels to make sure the levees could withstand the pressure........
