Hi Bill,

It sure was a pretty day to be on the Mississippi River. The beach on Alligator Island, just across from the mouth of the Meramec, was a beautiful spot for a barbecue and frisbee competition. See you on the river!

EPA Seeks Comments On WOTUS Rule........

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is taking comments on their draft of the Waters of the U.S. rule, which is a clarification of the Clean Water Act.  There have been some jurisdictional issues for the EPA as they try to enforce pollution of streams and wetlands, making enforcement more costly and time consuming.  This new rule would guarantee that streams and wetlands are under the EPA's jurisdiction as part of the Clean Water Act........

Want something a little different for a day on the Mississippi? Grab a bunch of your fellow pirates, sunbathers, boaters, and wakeboarders and try paddling down the river in the Mississippi River Water Trail Association’s 2nd Annual Poker Paddle on September 20, 2014. A new section of the river: from Sherwood Access to Hideaway Harbor on the Mississippi River is featured this year. Registration opens at 10:00 a.m. at Sherwood Access, Portage Des Sioux, MO. The registration fee covers your game and a cook-out lunch (hotdogs, chips, and marshmallows). Kayaks and canoes can be rented for a small additional fee. After the 10:30 mandatory safety meeting, players travel to different locations where a dealer will give out cards to build your hand. Card sheets will be accepted until 2:30 p.m. at Hideaway Harbor. We recommend that you keep playing into the evening with a visit to one of the great river towns or harbors along the river as the perfect ending to the day.

The person with the winning hand will receive 25 percent of the registration fees. Safety boaters will be on hand to assist participants. Shuttles will be provided. No inflatable boats, please. All participants must be at least 16 years of age. Event subject to postponement due to inclement weather or high water. For more information or to register click here or call the National Great Rivers Museum at 618.462.6979.

Residents Complaining About Fish Plant Odor........

The American Heartland Fish Products plant in Grafton is drawing the ire of some of their neighbors.  Some of the residents are calling for the removal of the Asian carp processing facility.  They are tired of dealing with the smell coming from the plant.  The facility processes Asian carp into high-protein fish meal and omega three oils.  American Heartland's CEO will be meeting with officials from the EPA next week, and he is thinking about chemically treating the steam to help with the odor........

    Lake Shelbyville

    Blood Drive

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville is partnering with the American Red Cross for a blood drive on Thursday, September 18, 2014. The blood drive is from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center Auditorium. Refreshments provided by Shelbyville McDonalds will be available for participants of blood drive. Participants who attempt to donate will receive a voucher for a free night of camping at Lake Shelbyville. The certificate can be used at any standard, single capacity, non-reservable site at Bo Wood, Coon Creek, Lithia Springs, Lone Point, or Opossum Creek.

The American Red Cross works diligently every day to keep an adequate supply of blood, especially in preparation for the summer recreation months when donations are needed. In the U.S. today, a blood transfusion is needed every two seconds. The need for blood is ongoing—24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give the gift of life to help meet the demand.

To schedule an appointment call 1-800 RED CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org and use the code USACE Shelbyville. All donors must present a Photo ID. For questions please contact the Lake Shelbyville Interpretive Services and Outreach Department at (217) 774-3951 ext. 2.
