Bill,

People who don't get out to the river early, miss the best time of the day. The mist was hanging over the lower end of enterprise island and the white boat was coming up the river, the temperature was still in the 70s. the best part of the day.

I do love the river.

Bill,

I was out today and just south of Grafton, when I stopped and talked with these 2 boys floating on a raft. They are from Germany, recently graduated high school, and are rafting from Quincy to Cape Girardeau.

They left Quincy a week ago and expect to take another week to reach Cape Girardeau. Very pleasant young men who said everyone they have met along the way have been nice to them. I gave them your website and told them when they stay on land at night, if they have internet access, to look for their picture. Hope to see it on the site.

Capt. Ron South

The Catch of the Day in 2010...... was from the 2010 Blessing of the Fleet.  It's Tom and Lou's cruiser "Willpower"  passing in front of the judges stand at Palisades Yacht Club.

It was a beautiful day, 248 boats participated in the Blessing, with many anchored boats watching and a good turnout of land spectators at Palisades Yacht Club and Longshot Saloon.

The St. Louis Pirates Group were firing cannons before the blessing and were a big hit with the crowd.  Mike Stanczak was flying overhead taking video for Rib Bolton and Larry Demko of Salty Dog Productions.  Captain Pat Reid was on the deck of Palisades and took a picture of each boat in the parade that passed the Judges stand.

In September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will start spraying sandbars along the Missouri River.  Contractors will be using a helicopter to spray herbicide on islands between the Garrison Dam and the Hazelton boat ramp on Lake Oahe.  The spraying is intended to keep the sandbars clear of vegetation, which will benefit nesting habitat for threatened piping plovers, and endangered interior least terns.........

Gulf Of Mexico

No Solution Yet For Dead Zone........

It has been 30 years since scientists mapped the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico, and environmentalists are not happy that not much has been done to correct the situation.  The dead zone this year only covers about 5,000 square miles, which is below average for the past five years.  Each summer, the dead zone forms off of the Louisiana coast, caused by excessive fertilizer washing off of farmland, into the Mississippi River........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Water Safety Tips for Labor Day Holiday

Carlyle Lake — It’s almost time to say goodbye to summer. If you’ll be spending the weekend on or around the water this Labor Day, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urges you to remember these safety tips.

Before heading out for the lake or river, be sure you have a life jacket on hand for everyone. Check that the life jackets are U.S. Coast Guard approved, are the right size, the right fit, and are appropriate for the activity you have planned. Then please make sure everyone wears it. On average, 9 out of 10 people who drowned at a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lake or river project didn’t wear a life jacket. Life jackets save lives by keeping you afloat and providing time for rescue.

If you plan to swim at a lake, please do so at a designated swim beach that is marked with a buoy line. Adults, plan to take turns being a “water watcher” and keep an eye on children when they are swimming. A child can drown in 20 seconds so stay within arm’s reach while supervising them.

Know your swimming ability. Each year, swimmers get into trouble swimming after a toy, a boat or some other object that drifts away. It’s not worth dying for to swim after the object. Let it go or put on a properly fitted life jacket and then retrieve the item.

Summer is ending, but you don’t have to let the fun end this Labor Day weekend. Please wear a life jacket to help ensure you return home alive and encourage your best buddy to wear one too.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the nation’s largest federal provider of outdoor water-based recreation, managing more than 420 lake and river projects in 43 states and hosting more than 370 million visits per year. With 90 percent of these recreation areas within 50 miles of metropolitan areas they provide a diverse range of outdoor activities close to home and to people of all ages.

For more information about Carlyle Lake, contact the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484 or email at carlylelake@usace.army.mil.

The Pictures of the Day ......  were sent to us by Jessica McKay who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

RiverBill:

Hi! We had a great weekend on the river! We started off bright and early Friday morning at Cedar Hill, where we had a great breakfast with the entire Hogback Bunch. Our crew consisted of 4 boats, and 26 River Rats. We only did a Half-Back and hung around the river in Louisiana, MO. On Saturday we chatted with local boaters at the beach. It was hot, but it was fun! We're looking forward to another 3 day weekend on the water!

  US Coast Guard News Release

Calumet River, near 106th St. Bridge in Chicago

CHICAGO —The Coast Guard is responding to the capsizing of a tug on the Calumet River near the 106th St. Bridge in Chicago in which two crew members were able to escape and swim to shore.

The Coast Guard is not releasing the names of those involved.

Shortly after 7 p.m., two crew members on board the 57-foot tug, Bonnie G. Selvick, attempted to turn the vessel around while transiting south on the Calumet River. During the process, the vessel rolled over, began taking on water and sank within minutes. The two crew members escaped and swam to shore.

One of the crew member contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan with a marine band radio on channel 16. Watchstanders directed the launch of a crew on board 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Calumet Harbor.

Once on scene, the Coast Guard crew confirmed that all crew members were accounted for and that there were no injuries.

Personnel from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago are determining if there is any pollution in the water from the vessel, and beginning an investigation into the cause of the incident.

Initial reports indicate that the vessel is not blocking other vessel traffic on the river. The Coast Guard will determine if a safety zone is needed around the vessel until a salvage crew arrives Thursday.

News Release From BoatUS

"Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs": Do You Know Weather?
United States Power Squadrons and BoatUS Foundation Help Boaters Understand Weather Basics Through Online Course

ANNAPOLIS, Md. August 27, 2014 – For boaters, sailors or anglers, knowing the forecast and understanding the weather can mean the difference between smooth, sunny sailing or slogging through uncomfortably rough seas. Weather for Boaters, a new online course from the United States Power Squadrons (USPS) and the BoatUS Foundation aims to teach boaters the basics of weather and forecasting so they may recognize and prepare for storms coming their way, interpret cloud formations and wind shifts, learn when to prepare for lightning and thunderstorms, and more.

“Weather for Boaters follows the traditions of USPS to prepare boaters to make informed decisions on the water.” said Robert Baldridge, Chief Commander, US Power Squadrons. The course is an easy-to-follow boater’s guide to forecasting, winds and storms that will help any boat owner decide when it’s time to go out, head back in, or seek cover. Included is an understanding of weather elements such as air masses, fronts and winds, storms, squalls and fog. It also helps boaters know the early signs of changing weather and how to use a barometer and weather map. It may also help race committees reduce risk.

As a special offer, Weather for Boaters is available until September 30 for just $29.95. Additional USPS/BoatUS Foundation online learning courses such as Partner in Command, which is great for first mates, and Boating on Rivers, Locks and Lakes are also available until September 30 for the same the special pricing of $29.95 per course. To receive the discounted special pricing on these courses, enter the promotional code “weather” when signing up at usps.org/edonline.

The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable through teaching boaters courses and seminars covering dozens of topics. To date, over four million boaters have taken a USPS course or seminar. The partnership with the BoatUS Foundation aims to increase the accessibility to boating education courses by tapping into the Foundation’s expertise at presenting engaging and effective course materials for online study at home. United States Power Squadrons have over 30 advanced courses and seminars taught by local squadrons that will be made available online in the next two to three years.

The BoatUS Foundation has its roots when Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) Founder and Chairman Richard Schwartz testified before Congress in 1969 that led to the watershed Federal Boat Safety Act of 1971. Today, the BoatUS member-funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is a national leader promoting safe, clean and responsible boating, and provides innovative educational outreach directly to boaters and anglers with the aim of reducing accidents and fatalities, The Foundation’s Online Boating Safety Course is the only free, NASBLA-approved online boating safety course in 33 states. To date, over one million boaters have taken the course.

Hello Bill,

Last month when the water was high here we visited our friends at their cottage in Pointe au Baril, Ontario. The cottage is on an island in beautiful Georgian Bay. Thousands of granite islands, big and small.

The first picture is us holding a stringer of fish we caught in about an hour. It was good eating that night!

The second picture is of us on a small granite island with Georgian Bay in the background. We had a picnic on that island with our friends and their family.
