Carlyle Lake

     23rd Annual Celebrate Duck Day

     August 30th

CARLYLE LAKE - The 23rd Annual Kaskaskia River Duck Race returns to the Carlyle Lake West Spillway on Saturday, August 30, 2014, the event will have the same format as last year. Due to maintenance work and the closure of the bridge deck on the main dam, the event has been changed to “Celebrate Duck Day Event”. Thousands of ducks will be securely placed on land in a fenced area located in the West Spillway. A designated official will be blindfolded and randomly choose the winning ducks. The owner of the winning duck will be awarded $5,000 courtesy of the Maschhoffs and nine additional prizes will be issued to the runners-up. The top four runner-up prizes include four St. Louis Cardinal Tickets donated by Imming Insurance, Sunday Brunch for four people at Krieger’s at the Holiday Inn Atrium in Mt. Vernon, a gift basket and wing tray from Dairy King in Breese and gift basket including four passes to the 2015 Balloon Fest in Centralia, IL.

Ducks are available for adoption at a variety of locations, including the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center and local banks. Ducks can be adopted individually for $5.00 each, but special “Quack Packs” are available in amounts of $25, $50, $100 and $200. “Quack Packs” come with an array of discounts and gift certificates to go with multiple duck entries in the event.

All proceeds from Celebrate Duck Day support the Healthcare Foundation, which provide educational programs, emergency services and medical supplies for individuals and families living in Clinton, Marion, Washington and Jefferson counties. Over one hundred individuals received help last year, so even if your duck isn’t one of the winners, your adoption dollars support a good cause.

For more information regarding Celebrate Duck Day contact the Healthcare Foundation at (618) 526-0080 or contact the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484 or e-mail us at carlylelake@usace.army.mil.

River History....

July 19, 1815 in River History

A treaty between the United States and the Yankton Sioux Indians took place in Portage Des Sioux, Missouri.

It was a treaty of peace and friendship, made by William Clark, Ninian Edwards, and Auguste Chouteau, Commissioners Plenipotentiary of the United States of America, and the Yancton Tribe of Indians.

Both parties were desirous of re-establishing peace and friendship on the same footing upon which they stood before the war between Great Briton and the United States.

Troop D Releases Marine Operations Saturation Results

     Niangua River

News Release

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer of Troop D, announces the results of a water enforcement saturation in Dallas and Laclede counties on the Niangua River, on August 16, 2014. This enforcement location was selected based on the high number of drinking- and impairment-related incidents, in addition to reported behavioral problems, illegal drug usage, and underage alcohol consumption.

The following is a list of enforcement contacts made by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Department of Conservation during the saturation on the Niangua River:

Total Boating Citations -- 18
Misdemeanor Possession Of Marijuana Arrests -- 6
Littering/Unsecure Trash Violations -- 2
Minor In Possession Of Alcohol Violations -- 3
Possession Of Glass Container Violations -- 5
Supplying Alcohol To A Minor Arrest -- 1
Other Traffic Violation -- 1

Captain Villanueva says, "Missouri's lakes, rivers, and streams provide numerous recreational opportunities for families to spend quality time together. It is the goal of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to do all we can to ensure that families can spend time on, and around the water in a safe environment."

In support of "The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths," the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

Hi Riverbill,

Took these this past weekend, and just felt surrounded by beauty at Sioux Harbor. Sunset on starboard side, moon rising on port side, just surrounded! Add good company, a few cold ones, and a couple of pics for memories!

Thought I'd share.

New EPA Water Rule Draws Opposition........

On Thursday, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt and U.S. Representative Vicky Hartzler spoke out against the federal "Waters of the United States" rule, which was proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The EPA says that the new rule is intended to make clear the protections for streams and wetlands under the Clean Water Act.  Several Missouri Agricultural groups oppose the rule, citing that the unclear wording in the rule could give the federal government control over every small waterway across the country........
