Hi Bill from Zanesville,Ohio and our completion of the Muskingum waterway thru the historic (1840 construction ) locks.

This is a hand operated miter gate filling the chamber up, notice the 3 gate valves letting the chamber fill. The lock man crosses over and opens the valves on the other gate and when the chamber is filled he hand cranks the door just a crack and water pressure equals out and he winds the gate open pushing a crank handle in a walking circle and it must be hard as the he (lock guy) seems to strain to open it. This is the way it was done for the steam boats way back when.

Makes you wonder if there really was 'good' in the good old days!

Mississippi River Management

Health Of Mississippi River Should Be A Priority........

The politics surrounding the management of the Mississippi River seems to resemble the annual flood fights in towns and cities along the river.  Barriers are erected to protect one area from flood waters; however, this forces the river levels higher downstream.  Many interests vie for control of the Mississippi River watershed, including farmers, shippers, exporters, environmentalists and industrialists.  The federal government ignores the needs of the river, as the interests squabble amongst themselves instead of working together........

July 17, 1673 in River History

Louis Joliet and Father Marquette left the mission at present day St. Ignace, Michigan on May 17, 1673 in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean by way of the Mississippi River. They traveled by the way of Green Bay, the Fox River and Wisconsin River. They entered the Mississippi River on June 17.

The exploration party followed the Mississippi River south to about the present day location of Arkansas City, Arkansas. On July 17 they turned back after deciding that the Mississippi River would not take them to the take them to the Pacific Ocean, but instead to the Gulf of Mexico.

On the return trip they went up the Illinois River where Louis Jolliet put forth the possibility of a canal connecting Des Plaines to the Chicago River.

 Kayakers Around St. Louis

Take Out Point...

Boat Ramp Alton Marina

John Patrico and RiverBill picked up Cody, Tyler and Ilan on Monday afternoon at the boat ramp under the Clark Bridge to portage them around St. Louis.  The Mississippi River at St. Louis was "Closed."

Look at those Eagles Landing T-shirts

Loading Kayaks

Loading Kayaks

The guys loaded all three of their kayaks into John Patrico's company van and secured them in place. We are ready to portage them around St. Louis, but not before we show them some St. Louis landmarks!

First Stop... Fast Eddies Bon Air

The guys were hungry so we took them to Fast Eddies Bon Air just a few blocks from the boat ramp where we picked them up.

John has a reserved spot in front of the building ! (So he Says)

The drinks were cold, the food was good, the conversation was great and we missed a torrential rainstorm that came through the area.

Next Stop... The Penthouse

We showed the guys the St. Louis arch.  They got their pictures as we drove by, then off to Sauget, IL to the Penthouse.

Hey ! ....The guys had been on the river for almost a month and John and RiverBill thought they would like to see some pretty ladies dance.

We are not sure who is driving the J. Patrico Heating and Cooling van at this point.

Next Stop..  Sr. Marie Charles Park

Located next to the Mississippi River

 on South Broadway

Waiting on the slow, slow, slow, slow moving train at the entrance to

Sr. Marie Charles Park.

File Photo

Nice park, but the terrain was to steep to put the kayaks in here...

Next Stop..  A quarry south of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge

No Pictures.... We got run out by the security guard !

(They do have a great ramp area)

Next Stop..  Cliff Cave Park

Located on the Mississippi River just south of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge

Many paths through the tall grass led down to the river

After may tries we finally found an acceptable access to the river. A long haul with the kayaks and supplies, it had a 3 or 4 foot drop of down to a cluttered spot on the river bank. It had a small protected pool of water out of the fast moving current of the flooded Mississippi River.

Kayaks unloaded and carried down the path to the river along with some new supplies

One Kayak in the water and then the other two.  All loaded up and ready to go.

Tyler, Ilan and Cody back in their kayaks in the Mississippi River about 6:30PM.

This picture was taken just before the headed out into the swift current and quickly headed down river in search of an overnight camping spot.

Mississippi River Around The Riverbend

    Area River Levels Are Falling........

The Mississippi River, and it's tributaries have begun their slow fall around the Riverbend.  River levels are anticipated to fall about six inches per day over the next several days.  This means that low-lying places, like portions of Grafton, will be returning to normal.  The Hawg Pit BBQ Barn, the business located in the lowest part of Grafton, has already begun their cleanup.  Mike Petersen, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that rains forecast upriver should not change the flood outlook........

The Blessing Of The Fleet Has Been Postponed........

While the Mississippi River has crested in the Riverbend, it is receding too slowly for the organizers of the annual Blessing of the Fleet.  The Blessing of the Fleet was originally scheduled to take place this weekend at Portage Des Sioux, Missouri.  Much of the grounds surrounding the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers are still submerged.  Blessing of the Fleet President Darryl Weil says that the Mississippi River is around 25 feet on the Grafton gauge, but it needs to be below 21 feet to allow access to the shrine.......

Riverfront Improvements Intended To Boost Tourism........

The city of Canton, Missouri has been making improvements to their riverfront, in an effort to become a tourism hotspot.  A few years ago, the city received stimulus funds from the federal government, and completed phase one of the project, which was the installation of a 2,000 foot levee walk.  This year, phase two was completed, with the addition of a one-story observation tower.  The tower was built on the old Canton water plant........

Bill:

Ran into some river friends while out looking at the high water.  Debbie Chambers suggested taking a picture with a RiverBills sticker.  Here's one that our bartender Jackson at Longshot Saloon took of the group.

You can never go wrong taking a picture with the bluffs in the background.
