Officials:  Detours Up, City Open For Business........

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that Illinois 100 was closed in Grafton, on account of the high Mississippi River levels.  Grafton officials, however, were quick to point out that the majority of the businesses in town are not affected by the floodwaters, and are accessible.  A release from the Grafton Police Department and Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson states that the City remains open for business, and that only one business, located at the most flood-prone location in Grafton, closed earlier in the week........

Mississippi River Flood Outlook

High Water Will Soon Leave The Riverbend........

For the most part, the Mississippi River between Rock Island, Illinois and East St. Louis is above flood stage.  Heavy rainfall from northern Illinois and even Wisconsin is was making it's way to the Mississippi River, and points downstream.  The National Weather Service says that with no significant rainfall forecast for the next 10 days, the Mississippi River will recede.  So far, no significant damage has been reported from this surge........

River History....

10 July 1993 in River History

Flood of 1993
The bridge that crosses the Mississippi River at Fort Madison, Iowa is closed due to floodinjg. The area had experienced rain for 54 of 58 days. 830 miles of Mississippi River are closed to boat traffic between Cairo, Illinois and St. Paul, Minnesota. Unprecedented high-water on the Missouri River, Des Moines River, Illinois, Iowa, Skunk, Rock and Raccoon rivers (all tributaries of the Mississippi River) promote the massive flooding of the Mississippi River.

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri

The River Has Crested In Clarksville........

On Wednesday, the Mississippi River at Clarksville, Missouri crested at 34.8 feet, just shy of the prediction of 35 feet.  Clarksville's riverfront park was flooded.  Water had also covered Main Street, and entered several homes.  Some of the homes had two feet of water in them.  The city's flood-fighting coffers were depleted after paying for last year's flooding, and the city opted out of paying for sandbagging efforts........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Heavy Rains Won't Bump Crest Higher........

Monday night's heavy rainfall in Northeastern Missouri is not expected to increase the Mississippi River's crest in Hannibal, nor change when the crest occurs.  The National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service had called for a crest in Hannibal of 26.7 feet on Tuesday at 7 am.  By 2 pm Tuesday, the National Weather Service announced that the Mississippi River had topped out at 26.7 feet........

Lincoln County farmers are preparing for flooding that could possibly wipe out this year's crops.  To add insult to injury, this year's flood will be the second in as many years.  Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished up repair work on the Foley Levee, which was damaged during last year's flooding.  With the assistance of Lincoln County Jail inmates, some 10,000 sandbags were filled........

High River Levels Thwarting Salvage Efforts........

The U.S. Coast Guard is saying that it may be a month before efforts to salvage a sunken towboat can begin.  On July 1, the 70 foot, 140 ton Jim Marko sank on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, just upstream of the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.  There was an oily sheen spotted above the wreck, however, there are no signs that large amounts of fuel have leaked out into the river........

 Sad News

Gerald "Jerry" Simon has passed away

Dear RiverBill,

I'm requesting your assistance in helping to spread the Visitation and Funeral Arrangements on RiverBills for my Dad, Gerald "Jerry" Simon, who passed away this past Saturday, July 5th.

Known as Jerry, "the Mechanic", in the boating community. Dad was a lifetime marine mechanic in the area for 50+ years, having started at the Family Marina/Venetian Harbor, as a child. He completed his first valve job at the young age of 16. He was a lifelong river friend and a book of mechanical knowledge on boat motors, generators and electrical components. He was also a trusted advisor on boat issues to many area boaters. He, alongside his father, William, and brother, Kenneth, started Venetian Harbor on the family farm ground in Portage Des Sioux, MO during the 1940's. Dad was instrumental in making it one of the premier full-service marinas on the Alton Pool during the boating boom of the 60's & 70's. Although ownership left the family in 1969, Dad continued working at Venetian Harbor as a mechanic after having served in the United States Coast Guard. He later left after purchasing Portage Repair Service in Portage Des Sioux, acting as owner and auto/boat mechanic. After selling his business to Mark Warner, he became the general manager/head mechanic for Anchor Marine of St. Louis, Ltd. (Known now as Port Charles Harbor) under the ownership of Tom & Marilyn Kirgin. After the business was sold in the late 90's, Dad opened and operated Marine Technology near his home in Portage Des Sioux until cancer caused his health to fail, forcing him to close the business last fall. I had the pleasure of working alongside Dad the past 4-5 years in the local marinas and meeting many wonderful fellow boaters. He will be missed by many.

I have attached a link for the visitation arrangements at Baue Funeral Home on Jefferson St. in St. Charles on July 8th & funeral/burial at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and Cemetery in Portage Des Sioux on July 9th. I've also attached a few pics of Dad. I truly appreciate your help in notifying our fellow boaters and friends of his passing. Thank you, RiverBills!

Sincerely,

William "Bill" Simon

Mississippi River At Clarksville, Missouri

Clarksville Getting Inundated By The River........

As of Tuesday afternoon, Clarksville was seeing the Mississippi River creep over Front Street, and the river was heading higher.  On Thursday, the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 35 feet, some 10 feet above flood stage.  The forecasted crest is less than three feet shy of the record set back in 1993.  Clarksville's flood-fighting coffers are empty, and the city has for the most part opted to let residents and businesses fend for themselves........

News Release From BoatUS

Missouri Corn Growers Pushing For More Ethanol at the Fuel Pump
BoatUS: Consumers Asked to Pay for an Ethanol-At-All-Cost Agenda

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. July 8, 2014 – Are wise consumers of gasoline being pushed to use a fuel that doesn’t work in their boats, lawn equipment, and other small engines? A June 24 statement from the Missouri Corn Growers Association (MCGA) blames current high gasoline prices on volatile markets and calls for more ethanol at the gas pump to lower gas prices. However, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says that smart consumers have learned that corn-based ethanol has not lived up to its expectations as America’s green fuel and that higher ethanol blends – those being encouraged by the MCGA – are incompatible with outboard boat motors, generators, lawn mowers, motorcycles, and so many other engines.

“Ever since 10% ethanol gas has been on the market, boaters have experienced problems with engine and fuel systems. Now, with higher blends like 15% ethanol (E15) coming to the pump, consumers need to be really careful about misfueling,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Senior Program Coordinator David Kennedy.

“On a boat, bad fuel can escalate quickly to a stopped engine, placing those aboard and the boat itself in jeopardy. And boaters know that higher ethanol blends, such as E15, will only cause more damage to outboard boat engines. The EPA has specifically prohibited the use of E15 in marine engines, and currently, there is not one boat motor designed or warrantied to use with more than E10.”

Added BoatUS’ Kennedy, “While all of us are tired of shelling out an arm and a leg for gas, boaters are also sick and tired of having engines fail and paying large repair bills. BoatUS strongly believes renewable fuels are an important part of our nation’s energy future, and we aren’t anti-corn farmer. But as a country, we can’t ignore the fact that corn-based ethanol may not be the savior – or profit center – that many had hoped.”

Floodwaters Expected To Hit 27 Feet........

The Mississippi River at Grafton, Illinois is expected to crest at 27 feet on Friday.  The National Weather Service says that as of Monday, the Mississippi River was at 23.6 feet.  Grafton's flood stage is 18 feet.  The rising river has caused the Hawg Pit BBQ Barn to shut down temporarily.  Over the weekend, people were loading Hawg Pit belongings into a semi-trailer in anticipation of flooding.  Grafton Police Chief Chris Sullivan said that the Hawg Pit will likely be the only business to shut down due to flooding........

Blessing of the Fleet Update

Blessing of the Fleet is being postponed indefinitely.

Due to the flooding currently going on it has become necessary to postpone the Blessing of the Fleet. Once the level on the Grafton gauge drops below 21 feet we will need at least a week to allow for cleanup of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers site, local roads and businesses. Currently Palisades Yacht Club is closed and Longshot Saloon / My River Home is using the rear entrance off of LeClaire Street, the LaRosa Cabana Bar is closed. Current projections show about 22.7 on July 19th, the original date. Check the Blessing website at www.blessingofthefleetstl.com and www.riverbills.com for updates.  Here is a link to the Mississippi River at Grafton gauge for reference.  http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=lsx&gage=grfi2&prob_type=stage

Water Skiing History....

On July 8, 1925 in Water Skiing History

Ralph Samuelson, the man who invented water skiing and the water ski, became the first ever water ski jumper. He smeared cooking lard on a half-sunken diving platform and then proceeded to make a jump.

Ralph Wilford Samuelson

(July 3, 1904–August 28, 1977) was the inventor of water skiing, which he first performed in the summer of 1922 in Lake City, Minnesota, just before his 19th birthday. Samuelson was already skilled at aquaplaning—standing on a board while being pulled by a powerboat—but he hoped to create something like snow skiing on the water. Lake Pepin, a wide portion of the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin, was the venue for his experiments.

Mississippi River Bridges

2 Bridges Closed Due To Flooding........

So far, flooding along the Mississippi River has forced the closure of two bridges spanning the river.  At 5 pm Sunday, the Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana shut down.  The Mississippi River is expected to crest ten feet above flood stage Tuesday, but it will be the end of the week before the water begins to receive.  On Monday morning, the Quincy Memorial Bridge in Quincy, Illinois was closed as well.  The impact of the bridge's closure won' be very severe, as Quincy has another Mississippi River bridge........

Missouri State Highway Patrol Warns Drivers:

Do Not Drive Through Flooded Roads

NEWS RELEASE

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, would like to remind motorists that it is very dangerous to drive on roads covered with water. Just recently, U.S. Highway 61 near Alexandria, Missouri, in Clark County, has been closed due to flood waters, and there is a potential for more road closures in the area.
Drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT, as it is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them. Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.
For road closings, please visit the Missouri State Highway Patrol or Missouri Department of Transportation websites.
In support of "The Drive To ZERO Highway Deaths," the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!
