Hi Bill.

Attached are a few pictures of Karen Halley at the Komen "Race for the Cure" from Saturday. Karen was sponsored by "The Boathouse" at North Shore Marina this year.

Jeanie & Steve Normand created and made the shirts for Karen's team. Karen had a fund raising benefit at the Boathouse earlier this year and raised money to help pay for the shirts and to make a donation to the Komen foundation.

It would be great to see a few of their pictures posted on the "Riverbills" website. There were several river folks that attended and walked with Karen and her team. Reggie and Denny Heisler can be seen in a couple of the pictures too.

Frog Days of Summer Begin June 30th

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Celebrate summer with a favorite outdoor pastime for many Missourians -- frogging season. It begins at sunset on June 30 and ends Oct. 31.

Frogging can be practiced with either a fishing permit or a hunting permit. The Wildlife Code of Missouri allows those with a fishing permit to take frogs by hand, hand net, atlatl, gig, bow, trotline, throw line, limb line, bank line, jug line, snagging, snaring, grabbing or pole and line. With a hunting permit, frogs may be harvested using a .22-caliber or smaller rifle or pistol, pellet gun, atlatl, bow, crossbow, or by hand or hand net. The use of an artificial light is permitted when frogging.

Children under the age of 16 and Missouri residents over the age of 65 are not required to have a permit.

Missouri has two frog species that are legal game — bullfrog and green frog. Bullfrogs are larger and therefore more sought-after, but the legs of both species are delicious. The taste and texture of frog meat is similar to that of fresh-water fish.

The daily limit is eight frogs of both species combined. Catch eight frogs before midnight, and start frogging again at 12:01 a.m. to catch another day’s limit. However, it is not legal to possess more than one day’s limit while on the water and banks where daily limits apply. The possession limit allows you to store no more than 16 frogs at a time.

Once a frog is speared, it must be harvested. The Wildlife Code of Missouri prohibits the release of a speared frog as “wanton waste” because the animal is not likely to recover. Any frog taken into actual possession, unless immediately released unharmed after being caught, is included in the daily limit.

For more information on frogging, including methods, conservation areas to hunt them, recipes, and regulations, go online to mdc.mo.gov/node/15122

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Blogger

We're approaching two years that Swing Set has been in a salt water environment. The recent picture above serves as proof that our boat has never looked better, but keeping it that way has not been easy nor cheap, which is how I describe myself occasionally.
Rust is a constant issue, but we've been able to keep a handle on it by rinsing off the exterior of the boat after every outing, something we couldn't do when we were traveling. We also use Salt Away, a product that we put in a garden sprayer when we rinse the deck and hull, especially after being out in rougher seas.
The stainless steel rubrail inserts are a constant maintenance item, and so are the bow rails. We use a product we found at the grocery store, Perfect Sink, made by Hopes. It's designed for stainless steel sinks, but does a great job on the boat. We've found some success in saving money by using products made for the home that do not have the word "marine" associated with them.
One bugaboo was the grab rail on our swim platform. Rust was constantly seeping out from under the grab rail mounts until I finally removed the rail, thoroughly cleaned the base of the rail, applied Boeshield T-9 Anti-Corrosion Spray, then laid in a base of silicon caulking around the mounting holes and then re-attached the rail. So far we haven't had anymore rust seeping out onto the swim platform.
Our marina is in a protected harbor, which also means we don't get much current. Not quite a stagnant water condition, but the growth that attacks our boat bottom seem to like this condition, and our boat bottom cleaner is earning his money every month when he scrubs our boat bottom. I checked his work the other day, after the third time he has been here, and found that Jacob, of Down Under Boat Bottom Cleaning, did a better job than I had ever done. He left nothing on the hull, or running gear, but it will be back when he returns in July. We've made a commitment to ourselves to get the boat out and run it at least once a week, which should help deter the critters that cling to our hull from getting too plentiful.

The Benefit for the Blessing of the Fleet held at Alton Marina more than doubled our expectations! We had the transient docks full with lots of fun people all weekend. The pool party and "Great Ball Splash and Grab" on Saturday was a blast. Many Thanks to everyone. I must mention a few that went way beyond all weekend. First off my Maureen who put all the great prizes together, then Karen Baker Brncic, manager of Alton Marina, her harbormaster Greg Brown and all their great staff. The "D"Dock DJs Scotty and Craig, RiverBills.com Bill Kelley and the RiverBills girls Sherri and Jill, members of the Blessing committee Charles and Marilyn Aten, Karlan and Caryl Kastendieck, Janet Rogliardi, "Follow Me" boat Captains Dutch Hauhe and John Bloch and many others that just pitched in to help with anything. Posted some pictures taken by Lisa Hickey on the Blessing website at www.blessingofthefleetstl.com

Mississippi River at the City of St. Louis, Missouri

    Persistent Rainfall and River Levels........

Over the past week, persistent rainfall has caused the level of the Mississippi River to rise at the city of St. Louis.  As of Tuesday, the level of the Mississippi River was at 23.3 feet and rising.  The river at St. Louis remains well below flood stage, which is 30 feet.  Mike Peterson, Spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said a surge of water from upriver is causing issues with driftwood and other debris.  The National Weather Service says that if the St. Louis region does not receive significant rain, the Mississippi River will fall to the 16 foot range in the next few days........

News Release From BoatUS

Boat Buying Season Scams

Some Red Flags You're About to be Taken for a Ride

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 16, 2014 -- It’s summer boating season and some boat buyers and sellers are getting ripped off, say’s Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). The national boater advocacy, safety and services group outlined the top boat selling scams reported to its Consumer Protection Bureau and offers some ways to greatly improve your chance of a smooth sale or purchase – and when to walk away.

Getting a cashier’s check or money for more than asking price: Anytime a buyer offers to pay more for the asking price of the boat your are selling – run away. Today, it’s easy for criminals to print counterfeit bank checks, and by the time your bank figures out the loss, the bad guys are far away, and you will be liable for the lost funds. Always contact the financial institution on which the check was drawn to verify the account, but don’t dial the phone number printed on the check, if possible. The amount of the bank check should also match in numerals and words, and the account number should not be shiny in appearance. Official checks are generally perforated on at least one side.

A twist on the same for the electronic age: Recently PayPal has become a target for scammers. A phony buyer again asks to send substantially more than the asking price. Later, you get a fake confirmation email from PayPal with your user ID for more than the agreed purchase price – with instructions from the buyer advising you to send the extra money to a shipper. The scam can seem even more legit – if you refuse, you may receive additional fake email notices from PayPal threatening to close your account if you don’t transfer the extra money as per your “agreement.”

An escrow service scam: A bogus seller advertises a boat on a website at a low, but not scam-worthy price. When the scammer finds a buyer, they will tell them to use a legitimate sounding yet fictitious escrow service, like GoogleMoney.com. But once the funds are transferred, you’ll never hear from the seller again. It’s wise to use an escrow service for a long-distance purchase, but be very cautious with escrow services you’re not familiar with, and go with established providers such as eBay’s Escrow.com.

Email red flags that mean you may be taken for a ride: Poor grammar, spelling and language use; no phone number for the buyer/seller; generic references (ex. “merchandise”) to the boat being sold; changing names and locations in emails; a buyer who shows no interest in haggling over price or seeing the boat firsthand; a buyer or seller who has no interest in discussing titling or verifying the boat’s Hull Identification Number (HIN).

For a free buying and selling guide for boaters, go to www.BoatUS.com/consumer.

US Coast Guard

Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway aids to navigation system restored

CLEVELAND — Coast Guard aids to navigation teams throughout the Ninth Coast Guard District completed restoring the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway aids to navigation system, Friday, following a late start to the operation due to the extended ice season.

Operation Spring Restore involves restoring approximately 1,222 navigational aids, including lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons. Roughly half of the aids in the region are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and inclement weather. This is known as Operation Fall Retrieve.

The Ninth District's aids to navigation system facilitates safe and efficient maritime activity on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway regions by marking safe passage for domestic, international, commercial and recreational vessel traffic. On the Great Lakes, the Coast Guard manages 2,557 federal aids.

To accomplish Operation Spring Restore, the Ninth District utilizes five U.S. Coast Guard cutters, five aids to navigation teams and two small boat stations with aids to navigation duties. The Coast Guard is assisted in this endeavor by: the Lamplighters, a group of civilian employees who manage the inland waters of northern Minnesota; the Canadian Coast Guard, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Corporation.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary also helps the district with verification of approximately 1,700 privately-owned aids to navigation in the region.

The waters of the Great Lakes are marked to assist navigation according to the U.S. Aids to Navigation System. This system employs a simple arrangement of colors, shapes, numbers and light characteristics to mark navigable channels, waterways and obstructions adjacent to them.

The aids restored during Operation Spring Restore are all floating aids. All have a purpose and help in determining location, as well as facilitating the safe transit from one place to another, and staying out of danger.  Click here for pics and more information.

Because of a drier than anticipated May, the spring runoff forecast for the Missouri River Basin has been downgraded by around 600,000 acre feet.  The change was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Tuesday.  Jody Farhat, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division said that the precipitation over the past three months was only about 25% of normal, especially in the western two-thirds of Montana........

  Southern Illinois Rivers

      River Levels Remain Fairly Static........

The banks of the rivers in southern Illinois are containing the waters, despite recent rainfall in the area.  At Chester, Illinois, the Mississippi River was just above flood stage at 27.4 feet as of Thursday.  It was anticipated that the river would crest at 27.7 feet Friday, and begin to fall.  Mary Lamb, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service said that there is just a small wave coming down the Mississippi River........

Happy Father's Day

For anyone who would doubt that boating is in my blood, proof is in the photo above. My dad is the guy in the middle in the photo.
The year is 1956 and the location is a beach on the Mississippi River. The fella on the left is my uncle, Joe Herbst, my dad's brother in law. Joe Herbst was a Golden Gloves boxing champ and he got my dad his job at the beer factory, I think in 1949. This subsequently led to my career at the beer factory too. Thank you all.
I don't remember the fella on the right, but as you can see, they are all enjoying a cold Budweiser, another item that is in my blood, more often than not. Who says boating and beer don't mix?
We lost some good boat neighbors here at the marina last weekend, with them moving back to Fort Myers, where Greg and Alisa can send their daughter Sara to a better school, and Greg can be closer to his work as a doctor. They were fun, and we'll miss them.
As a send off celebration of sorts, Alisa joined us on a Friday night, on the weekend before last, when Sara, another friend, showed up in Key West with two of her girlfriends

While some men fantasize about hitting the town with five women in tow, the true experience can only be described as something similar to herding cats, especially when every bar you go into is full of drunk men resenting the fact that a man is in the company of five women.
We had a great night, but I paid for it and came down with a cold or something, the first bad one I've had since leaving St. Louis
