Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

River Just Over Flood Stage....  And Holding....

This time last year, the city of Davenport was facing their third flood.  This year, however, instead of filling sandbags, the Davenport Public Works crews are busy keeping the river out of the city's storm sewers.  For the past three weeks, they have been manning pumps around the clock.  By Monday, the Mississippi River is expected to reach 16.6 feet causing some moderate flooding........

Lewis and Clark Re-enactors

Need Chase Boats for Heritage Days in Frontier Park

If you have a boat that you can launch on the Missouri River, consider helping the Lewis and Clark reenactors. They will be launching their full armada of the keelboat as well as two pirogues and are looking for a little of your time to help. A chase boat is needed prepare by taking soundings on Wed-Friday, May 14-16. In addition, there’s a need on Saturday, May 17 to accompany the boats up from Columbia Bottoms to the staging area in North St. Charles. They’ll also need some help on Saturday afternoon to bring the boats up to Frontier Park. Preferably, they’re looking for a bass boat with a fairly good size engine so that they can move quickly in case of emergency. If you can help, contact Tom Ronk at 573-690-0930.

Thanks again for your help.

Mississippi River Management

Locks And Dams Focus Of Meeting........

The main topic of discussion at this year's Tri-State Development summit at Hannibal-LaGrange University was the lock and dam system of the Mississippi River.  Iowa Governor Terry Branstad said that the lock and dam system is critical to the region, and more attention needs to be given to the Mississippi River.  He added that serious attention has been given to the Ohio River, but it is overdue on the Mississippi........

  News From US Boat

In Recession's Ebb, Boaters Embrace Frugality

ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 8, 2014 – Nearly five years after the recession’s arguable end, the summer recreational boating season in America has returned, and with it, the country’s boat owners have embraced a new sense of frugality. There’s a large misperception that boaters are “rich”, but hard data proves that boat owners are mostly middle class – at least in the US – says Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). And now, more than ever, boaters are doing everything they can to save on the family boating budget.

“When the recession hit, the reality was that most owners didn’t get out of boating and instead, chose to save by making shorter trips or running the engine less, teaming up with friends for fishing trips, or other cost-saving measures,” said Scott Croft, BoatUS vice president of public affairs. As part of its membership program the advocacy and services group offers discounts on fuel, slips, repairs and other marine services, and Croft said the discount program has become a top member benefit.

“Our members tell us that looking out for their interests on Capitol Hill, or providing boat towing services, has always been important,” said Croft. “However, helping them stay in boating by saving money is now more valuable to a larger group of boat owners.”

BoatUS members pay less for gas – from $.05 to $.10 off each gallon of fuel at 375 “BoatUS Cooperating Marinas.” Croft says the cost of a BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership ($24/year) can sometimes be recouped after just one fill-up. BoatUS’ Cooperating Marinas also offer discounts on up to 25% off transient slip fees – essentially four nights for the price of three – and up to 15% on boat and engine repairs. About 1050 businesses and service providers, from sail lofts and engine shops to fishing guides offer a BoatUS member discount.

Local BoatUS membership discounts can be seen on a map at BoatUS.com/ServiceLocator. For BoatUS membership information visit BoatUS.com, or, for anglers, BoatUS.com/Angler.

  Missouri State Highway Patrol

      Highway Patrol Encourages Water Safety

News Release

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds boaters to exercise safety and courtesy during the 2014 boating season at Lake of the Ozarks.

Captain Gregory D. Kindle, commanding officer, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop F, urges everyone to check their vessel's safety equipment before venturing out on the water this season. This includes making sure personal floatation devices are in good condition and readily accessible while on the water. Please check fire extinguishers to make sure they are fully charged. Make sure you have an approved sounding device that is audible for at least one-half mile. The Patrol will be conducting several equipment safety checkpoints this season to ensure boaters are in compliance with equipment regulations.

Captain Kindle also asks the boating public to please be respectful of each other and be considerate to fellow boaters. Each year, the Patrol investigates approximately 50 injury crashes on the Lake of the Ozarks in the Troop F area, some of which could be prevented by simply practicing conscientious, sober, and courteous vessel operation. This includes maintaining a safe speed and distance from other boats, and keeping proper lookout for other boats, people, and large wakes that require proper navigation.

The Patrol investigates an average of five drowning incidents each year at the Lake of the Ozarks. Although each of these tragedies has their own unique circumstances, many drownings are preventable. Water safety starts with decisions made prior to reaching the water, like putting on your life jacket and respecting the risks of waterway activities. Drug or alcohol impairment adds to the likelihood of falls from docks or boats, poor decisions, and disorientation in the water, which heightens the risk of drowning.

Captain Kindle urges the public to please make good decisions on and around the lake this year and help us make 2014 a great boating season. Please report all impaired operators by calling Troop F Headquarters at 573-751-1000 or dialing *55 on a cellular telephone.

In support of “The Drive To Zero Highway Deaths,” the Patrol encourages motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!!

Flood Warnings Ushered In By Rising River Levels........

While there are many perks to living along the Mississippi River, these perks come with a price.  Each year, towns lining the Mississippi River must answer two questions:  When will the river flood, and how bad?  The City of Clinton is protected by a levee that protects major infrastructure from rising river levels.  Dan Riney, Clinton's Water Quality Superintendent says the major task he has to perform during flooding events is installing the flood gates........

A chase boat is needed prepare by taking soundings on Wed-Friday, May 14-16. They’ll also need some help on Saturday afternoon to bring the boats up to Frontier Park. Preferably, they’re looking for a bass boat with a fairly good size engine so that they can move quickly in case of emergency. If you can help, contact Tom Ronk at 573-690-0930.

YesterYear's Pictures of the Day in  2013...was sent to us by Mark Dinzebach who hails out of Eagles Landing

Bill,

Apparently River Des Peres has become a perfect place to ride your wave runner with the backed up flood waters off the Mississippi River. These guys launched them last night, 4/29, at Morganford Road and it looked like they were having a good time.
