Mississippi River History

    Steamboats Evolved With St. Louis........

In August of 1817, the first steam-powered vessel, the Zebulon Pike, arrived in St. Louis at the foot of Market Street.  The Pike made the trip from Louisville, Kentucky in 30 days.  At that time, St. Louis was a hard three-month long paddle up the Mississippi from New Orleans.  On March 1, 1819, the Washington arrived in St. Louis, after a month long trip from New Orleans.  The ensuing increase in river-born traffic led to a population boom in St. Louis,  In 1830, the city had 5,825 residents.  By 1850, the population reached 77,680........

Discovery Expedition of St. Charles

Need Docks for Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18

A Little Help from Our Friends???

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles was prominent in the bicentennial reenactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition about 10 years ago. It continues to provide education through reenactments and thru the museum and boat house near Frontier Park. The organization is looking to put the keelboat as well as both pirogues in the water for the Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18. We’re seeking some temporary docks that can be put in the water at Frontier Park for that weekend so that the boats can be tied up there.

If any Riverbills’ readers have docks that can be put in place on the Missouri River waterfront that weekend, please contact Gary Ulrich at 314-537-2082 or by emailing him at GRU1039@aol.com.

Your help is much appreciated in this important part of our community educational efforts.

A Little Help from Our Friends???

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles was prominent in the bicentennial reenactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition about 10 years ago. It continues to provide education through reenactments and thru the museum and boat house near Frontier Park. During the month of March, there were small gains made in boat sales, mostly in the fiberglass outboard segment.  Sales remained fairly static in the main powerboat segment, with only a 2.5% increase.  The best performing segment, outboard fiberglass, saw a 5.2% increase in sales in March, compared to 2013.  The other high-volume segment to post gains was aluminum fishing boats, which increased 1.1%........

News Release From BoatUS

Must Do Springtime Boat Buying Tips From BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 16, 2014 -- With the number one boat buying season of the year kicked off, springtime boat buyers are on the prowl. The nation’s largest recreational boating advocacy and services group, Boat Owner Association of The United States (BoatUS), has some must do tips before you sign on the dotted line.

The Internet is your friend and foe: Of course it’s always good to research a boat you’re considering online, first. While the Internet is not always 100% accurate, you may learn about serious problems other owners have had. Check owners group chat boards or online boating, fishing or cruising discussion groups for the kind of boat you’re looking at. BoatUS has the only national consumer complaint database for boats as well, searchable by members. Also be aware of Internet scams if you’re buying online. Any whiff of something odd and you should proceed with caution.

Always get a professional marine survey: Surveys will uncover potential problem spots and can help with price negotiations. On a boat with expensive engines or generators, a separate engine survey could save huge headaches later. Make any purchase contingent on the survey. For a list of accredited surveyors, visit BoatUS.com/surveyors.

Take the boat on a sea trial: You wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a drive, and you should treat buying a boat the same way. It doesn’t matter whether it’s 16- or 60-feet.

Give yourself some reasonable protections: Make sure that any deposit is 100% refundable if any contingencies such as a survey, financing or insurance are not met. Get it in writing. If there is a warranty or promise to fix something as part of the sale, get it in writing. Did we say get it in writing?

“Who am I talkin’ to?”: Before getting too serious about a boat, verify that the owner (or brokerage/consignor) has the title and registration on hand. Any liens will have to be paid before transferring title.

BoatUS has additional resources at BoatUS.com/guide including a free buying guide and boat evaluation checklist.

The Canton Ferry Has Shut Down........

The ferry that linked Canton, Missouri with Ursa, Illinois has shut down after 20-plus years.  The Lewis County/Canton Port Authority closed the ferry due to financial reasons.  During the ferry's last inspection, the U.S. Coast Guard had found that the hull at the bottom of the vessel would need to be replaced.  When the hull was cut from the vessel, more issues were discovered inside the barge........

     Davenport Getting Ready For Flooding........

The National Weather Service has forecast that the Mississippi River will rise to 15.7 feet by next Monday, and as a result, Davenport workers are getting ready.  Flood stage at Lock and Dam No.15 is 15 feet.  Davenport will be following their flood plan, which will protect two feet above the predicted crest.  Snowmelt from upstream is having an effect on river levels, but rainfall is having a larger impact on how high the river goes........

On Monday, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk dropped into Grafton, while touring the region.  Kirk met with Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson and Hartford Mayor James Spann at Aerie's Winery in Grafton, prior to taking a tour of the American Heartland Fish Products facility.  The processing plant is expected to start operations within the next few weeks.  One of Senator Kirk's main environmental concerns is the aquatic invasive species in the Mississippi River Basin........
