The Picture of the Day in 2013......... was sent to us by Guy Unverferth

Hi Bill,

Just wanted to share a couple of pics with you. The first one is our daughter Amanda who turns 10 in a couple of weeks and is very excited about this boating season. We haven’t made it out yet this year but it won’t be long. The other picture is of our 1993 SeaRay which will be 20 years old this year and still looking great. We adopted her from some nice river boaters out of Lake Center shortly after Amanda was born and has been a wonderful boat for all of us over the years.

Not sure if out picture is formatted correctly but we’d love to see our SeaRay on the Riverbills banner someday. She doesn’t have an official name, but this year she’ll be the “Birthday Girl”.

Thanks.
Guy, Mary and Amanda Unverferth

A Little Help from Our Friends???

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles was prominent in the bicentennial reenactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition about 10 years ago. It continues to provide education through reenactments and thru the museum and boat house near Frontier Park. The organization is looking to put the keelboat as well as both pirogues in the water for the Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18. We’re seeking some temporary docks that can be put in the water at Frontier Park for that weekend so that the boats can be tied up there.

If any Riverbills’ readers have docks that can be put in place on the Missouri River waterfront that weekend, please contact Gary Ulrich at 314-537-2082 or by emailing him at GRU1039@aol.com.

Some Seniors Could See Break On License Fees........

Recently, the Illinois house passed a bill that would give low-income seniors a break on fishing and hunting licenses.  The bill, which was sponsored by Illinois State Representative Jack Franks, would reduce the cost of state fishing and hunting licenses to just $1 for seniors over the age of 75 and are part of Illinois benefit access program.  The measure is now headed to the Senate for a vote........

Blessing of the Fleet

    Committee meeting April 19th

I have scheduled a Blessing of the Fleet Committee meeting on Saturday, April 19th at Noon. Location to be Sundowners at Yacht Club of St. Louis, 105 Lake Village Drive, St. Charles, MO 63301.

Updates:

Maureen and I will be meeting with Karen Brncic of Alton Marina to finalize plans for the Benefit for the Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday April 12th.

Maureen has been working hard gathering donations of prizes for the Benefit Raffle. If you know of any business that may wish to contribute please let us know. So far we've got boat haulouts, Cardinals tickets and many boat related items along with gift certificates, wine and such that will be combined into baskets. More info from Maureen at the meeting.

I've had a 15 foot banner made up with the Blessing website address on it that will be displayed both at the Benefit and the day of the Blessing.

Blessing posters have been printed and distributed at the Boat Show and a few other locations. Copies will be available at the meeting.

The organization that is putting "Cakes" around celebrating the 250th Birthday of the St. Louis area selected the Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine as one of the locations for their "Cakeway to the West". With the approval of the people that maintain the Shrine I arranged to have one installed last Tuesday. Attached are a couple of pictures of it. More information can be found on the STL250 website at www.stl250.org

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rivers now has a website - http://ourladyoftheriversshrine.org/

Take a look at both and let me know at the meeting of any suggestions on them.

Mississippi River Near Hannibal, Missouri

Low Water Causing Issues For Boaters........

Shortly after 11 am Tuesday, the Hannibal Fire Department dispatched one of their rescue boats in response to reports of a stranded boater on the Mississippi River, downstream from Hannibal.  Jerome Sebree had just finished repairing his boat, loaded up his crew, and headed out onto the water.  The boat ride was short, as the vessel ran aground in shallow water.  The initial responder's boat was not able to reach the stranded vessel, nor was the second.  A third vessel was dispatched, and all of the boats involved were able to return to shore under their own power........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Captain Larry Don Has Been Raised........

Recently, the Captain Larry Don sank alongside of her dock at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Now, the vessel has been raised and is sitting on level ground.  The owner of the Larry Don said that the fate of the vessel was still undecided, but scrapping the Lake of the Ozarks fixture was not completely off the table.  The vessel may hold sentimental value to people at the lake, but the economic realities involved with raising, repairing and refloating the Larry Don may be cost-prohibitive........

On Tuesday, a vessel pushing 15 barges upriver struck a railroad bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Sabula, Iowa.  Part of a protective pier was damaged, however, the bridge itself was not damaged.  The U.S. Coast Guard closed the river surrounding the bridge until the pier has been repaired, and the river itself has been checked for debris that may hinder vessels from transiting the area........

Bill,

A friend took this picture of us today helping a couple of folks in a kayak and a canoe just outside of Polestar Marina. They were both nearly sunk and they were trying to make their way to North Shore. They were nearly frozen from the cold water they were sitting in.

We have never towed a kayak before, but I guess there is no job too small!

US Army Corps of Engineers

     Carlyle Lake

CARLYLE LAKE – On Monday, April 14, 2014, the Carlyle Lake Main Dam bridge deck will be closed for maintenance work. The work is a continuation from prior structural repairs and painting performed in 2006. Repairs will include sandblasting and repainting the four tainter gates at the Carlyle Lake Main Dam. These repairs will ensure the integrity and increase the longevity of the structure. The repairs are expected to last through the entire recreation season and work is scheduled to be completed in September 2014. The schedule of work is contingent upon weather and lake level, and may be adjusted.

Many visitors use the existing Main Dam Road for recreational opportunities. During this time frame, pedestrian traffic will be restricted across the Main Dam bridge deck. The East and West Main Dam service roads will remain open for visitors wishing to enjoy walking, running or bike riding. Visitors should also consider using the Carlyle Lake Bike Trail located around the lake and through the City of Carlyle.

For more information about Carlyle Lake, contact the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484 or email at carlylelake@usace.army.mil

Discovery Expedition of St. Charles

Need Docks for Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18

Your help is much appreciated in this important part of our community educational efforts.

Mississippi River At Hartford, Illinois

Flags Over The Mississippi Event Was This Weekend........

Toward the end of the 18th century, and into the 19th century, it was thought that whomever controlled the Mississippi River would be in control of the North American continent.  As a result, several nations claimed the St. Louis region as their own, including the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France.  Over the weekend, the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site hosted their reenactment event, "Flags Over The Mississippi:  Struggle For An Empire".  History buffs and re-enactors were on hand to represent the different flags flying over the region between the late 1700s through the War of 1812........

Discovery Expedition of St. Charles

Need Docks for Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18

Your help is much appreciated in this important part of our community educational efforts.

Mississippi River At Canton, Missouri

     Canton's Levee System Needs Work........

The levee system protecting Canton, Missouri from the Mississippi River is in need of work, and the city is proposing a bond issue to fund the repairs.  The flood gate to the north of Canton is too worn down to protect the town.  It is made of aluminum, and is close to 50 years old.  Former Canton Mayor Terry Fretwell said that the north side levee sees the greatest amount of stress from floodwaters........
