Discovery Expedition of St. Charles

    Need Docks for Heritage Days

Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18

A Little Help from Our Friends???

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles was prominent in the bicentennial reenactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition about 10 years ago. It continues to provide education through reenactments and thru the museum and boat house near Frontier Park. The organization is looking to put the keelboat as well as both pirogues in the water for the Heritage Days at Frontier Park in St Charles, May 17-18. We’re seeking some temporary docks that can be put in the water at Frontier Park for that weekend so that the boats can be tied up there.

If any Riverbills’ readers have docks that can be put in place on the Missouri River waterfront that weekend, please contact Gary Ulrich at 314-537-2082 or by emailing him at GRU1039@aol.com.

Your help is much appreciated in this important part of our community educational efforts.

    Boat Builder Recovering From Fire........

On Wednesday, a fire at the Sea Hawk factory damaged a mould in which a boat was being built.  Apparently, after operations shut down for the day, pressure in a storage area for resin and catalyst caused the catalyst to leak, and overheat the resin.  Luckily, a metal worker was still at the plant, and saw the smoke.  The building sustained very little damage.  Sea Hawk manufactures commercial vessels typically used for diving, fishing, and even as ferries........

Bill,

Naut-A-Clue has made the journey Saturday from Peoria to Grafton finally. It was a 7 hour trip at about 160 miles. We had luck behind us as the snowmageddon didn't start till Sunday.

I'd like to thank you for the great Lock and Damn class (even though the wickets were down at both locks!) and your web page for all the useful information that helped make this trip happen.

Here's a picture of our 1990, 38 Carver Montego, Naut-A-Clue in its new home at Grafton Harbor.

Now Bring on the Summer!!!!

Thanks

Boat Owners Association of The US: By the Numbers

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 28, 2014 – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) is an association of like-minded boaters, anglers and sailors defined by a sampling of numbers. From how many members it has, or the number of TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist towboats across the nation, to the number of fishing tournaments sanctioned by the BoatUS Angler “Weigh-to-Win” cash bonus program, BoatUS has a number for it.

Here’s a look at 2013 numbers for the nation’s boating advocate and services provider:

The BoatUS Member
500,000+: Total number of BoatUS members in 2013.

28 feet: Average length of a BoatUS member’s primary boat. (BoatUS members own two boats on average.)

1,000,000+: Total number of boats owned by BoatUS members in 2013.

27: Average number of years of boating experience for a BoatUS member.

Boating Safety
$10,000: The maximum grant amount given to each local boating group who gained a 2013 BoatUS Foundation Grassroots Grant (BoatUS.org/grants).

575: The number of locations across the country (all 50 states + District of Columbia) where you can borrow for free a child’s life jacket through the BoatUS Foundation’s Kids Life Jacket Loaner Program.

94,791: The number of students who have taken or enrolled in the BoatUS Foundation’s free Online Boating Safety Course in 2013, which qualifies as boating safety certification in 33 states and can qualify you for a discount on your boat insurance (BoatUS.org/courses).

2 weeks: The average length of a low-cost EPIRB (Emergency Position-Indicating Rescue Beacon) rental from the BoatUS Foundation EPIRB and PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) Rental Program (BoatUS.org/epirb

 Sad News

     Jean Dorshorst has passed

Crewed for the "Teresa J" and the "J-Crew"

Bill,
Although I have not been on the river over the past year, I hope to return soon. I would, however, like to let my river friends know of the passing of my beloved mother, Jean Dorshorst, who became a "river rat" on her visits here to St. Louis on the J-Crew. She was always excited to come during boating season over the many years, being a member of the crew for both the "Teresa J" and the "J-Crew". She loved being on the water!

Mom passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years young. It was a very unexpected passing and we are truly devastated by her loss. My mother has generously donated her body to science in the hope of helping her family and anyone who may battle the disease of Lupus.

A Memorial Gathering and Service will be held on March 29th at Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home, 4830 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, 63129 from 9 a.m. until noon. Donations may be made in her honor to the Lupus Foundation, Gateway Chapter, St. Louis.

To my boating friends who have called and written, thank you for your sympathy and outpouring of support. It has been genuinely appreciated.

The Picture of the Day in 2013.....  was sent to us by Ann Fleming who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Hey Dad,

Wanted to share a few pictures on this very White Spring Day. The first one is of "My Little River Dawgs." Izzy & Lil Bit on their boat "Haulin Paws." Which was taken last summer behind Two Branch Island on 6-30-12. The little dogs love just hanging out on their boat when we all are relaxing in the water.

The second picture is of My Grand Daughter - Dakota, Who is RiverBills Great Grand Daughter. Dakota who is now 5 months old, and will soon be taking her first Boat Ride. She will become a true River Rat this summer and is a 4th generation Boater.

This Boater does when we get 12.5 inches on snow the first weekend of Spring.

What else do you do with 12.5 inches of snow..... Think Spring!

See you soon!

Asian Carp Update

MN Lawmakers Discuss Changing Carp's Name........

Lawmakers in Minnesota are mulling over whether to change the Asian Carp's name.  Bills passing through the Minnesota legislature would require the fish to be referred to as "invasive carp" instead of Asian carp.  Apparently, some Minnesota residents of Asian descent object to the name Asian carp, as they believe that is portrays people from Asian cultures in a bad light........

RiverBills Blog Spot !

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Let's start with some fun stuff! In the picture above is James and Marny with us at Turtle Kraals last week. James and Marny are friends we met at Lake of the Ozarks late in the last century. We haven't seen them since we left St. Louis almost two years ago. They came down with their son Alex on the Key West Express, a ferry that operates from Fort Meyers, where they had been visiting Gary and Judy, our mutual friends in Cape Coral.
The weather was great last week and we were able to spend time at Dante's pool and get Swing Set out of her slip two days in a row. We took a 34 mile route one day out around the western end of Key West to show James and Marny downtown from the water, and then we cruised out to Sand Key Light where we saw the sunken Tug Boat Tilly on the way.
There really wasn't much to see of Tilly, she's in thirty-five feet of water and only the light mast is sticking above the waterline. There is a danger buoy in place and Active Captain already has the spot marked on our Garmin Bluechart Mobile chart. I think they should just send divers down and cut off the super structure and let it fall, providing a cool diving spot, yet keeping her well below the surface so it's not an obstacle. The DEP will probably "study" the situation for a couple of years.
We had another day out on Swing Set with James and Marny on the following day, but we mostly hung on the hook and enjoyed the sun, something they haven't been able to do back in St. Louis. We put Swing Set on plane for a bit to see if she was still running good, and she is, however this report most likely will jinx everything. "Never brag about your boat" is an adage I usually adhere to, but I also like to tempt fate.

Island Dave says....  This is the marina that the S.S. Minnow departed from as seen in the Gilligan's Island theme song.  A sailboat boat can be seen leaving from the far left of the marina and later the Minnow is heading out along the breakwater.

The Picture of the Day in 2013.....  was sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

River Bill,

We saw this cruising up the river last Saturday. I had no idea what it was but it looked interesting so I took a photo of it and asked my brother. I thought you might find my brother Larry's explanation of this interesting. Larry is a Boilermaker. No not from Purdue, a real Boilermaker. Dig this. He did maintenance on the exterior of the old smoke stacks at the Portage Electric plant. He is the smartest guy I know and I am fortunate to have him for a brother. Check out his explanation of this.

Mike,

This is a Ball Mill or a Rotary kiln being sent out for repair. Ball mills are used to grind Coal to a powder to be burnt in a large Fire box at an Electric Plant.
Rotary kilns are fired and rotated to dry and grind Portland cement, into a powder to be bagged, or shipped by rail. The item on the barge appears to be damaged in the center, the shiny ring on the ends is where the rolling motors turn the wheels that turn the cylinder that action keeps that part shiny.

Nice catch, with Love Bro. Larry

Fishy Tales From South Florida

Angler Pulled On A 2 Hour Kayak Ride........

On Sunday, angler Adam Fisk was fishing from a kayak off of the coast of Florida.  He hooked a hammerhead shark, who took the bait, and Fisk's kayak for a ride.  The shark dragged the kayak, and Fisk over two hours.  Fisk captured part of the ordeal with a Go-Pro camera.  He even submerged the camera into the water to show the 11 foot long shark leading the kayak along........

 Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois

     Flood Insurance Increase Worries Residents........

For residents along the Illinois River, inaction will lead to higher flood insurance premiums.  For those living in older, more flood-prone houses, flood insurance premiums will be increasing up to 18%, because the national flood insurance program is in debt.  There is an option for residents to avoid the premium hike, however.  If the home sustained enough damage during a single flood,  the homeowner would be provided with up to $30,000 per house, to raise the home and ventilate it, thus keeping the premiums constant........

Teresa Dorlac-Dorshorst

Crews Hope To Remove Stolen Truck From River........

Officials from Burleigh County, North Dakota are hoping to remove a stolen pickup truck from the Missouri River before heavy boat traffic arrives.  The Burleigh County Dive Rescue team ins waiting for large ice chunks to clear out before attempting to remove the pickup, which has been in the river since January 26.  The Missouri River is believed to be deep enough to keep the truck from being a navigational hazard, but officials want to remove it just in case........
