Bill,

Here's a picture just taken in Pickensville, AL at "Pirate's Marina Cove" marina.
We're waiting for a south-bound tow to finish locking at the Tom Bevill lock.
We left out of Vonore, TN one week ago. I would have liked to get a picture with the Smoky Mountains.

The second picture was taken by long time friends Geneva & Pete Andrews "Woodja" from the HWY 60 bridge crossing the Tennessee River.

Third is a picture of the Delta Queen a few days ago tied up in down-town Chattanooga.

The "Indian Princess" is the same boat pictured in Woodland Marina's web-site and facebook page. (new owners, new name)
That picture was taken by Glenn about 5 years ago. I think it made Riverbill's pic of the day back then.

On our way to Ft Myers Beach, Florida,
We check out RiverBills.com everyday!

 Sad News

     Jean Dorshorst has passed

Crewed for the "Teresa J" and the "J-Crew"

Bill,

Although I have not been on the river over the past year, I hope to return soon. I would, however, like to let my river friends know of the passing of my beloved mother, Jean Dorshorst, who became a "river rat" on her visits here to St. Louis on the J-Crew. She was always excited to come during boating season over the many years, being a member of the crew for both the "Teresa J" and the "J-Crew". She loved being on the water!

Mom passed away peacefully at the age of 83 years young. It was a very unexpected passing and we are truly devastated by her loss. My mother has generously donated her body to science in the hope of helping her family and anyone who may battle the disease of Lupus. A Memorial Gathering and Service will be held on March 29th at Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home, 4830 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, 63129 from 9 a.m. until noon. Donations may be made in her honor to the Lupus Foundation, Gateway Chapter, St. Louis.

To my boating friends who have called and written, thank you for your sympathy and outpouring of support. It has been genuinely appreciated.

Teresa Dorlac-Dorshorst

    World Water Day Is Saturday........

Typically, we don't seem to be too concerned with water until there is too much or too little.  On Saturday, March 22, World Water Day is being observed, and KPLR 11's John Fuller spoke with Todd Sampsell, who is the Missouri State Director of the Nature Conservancy, about water conservation.  Sampsell said that water is important to fish and wildlife, as well as driving the global economy........

Roadside Breakdowns Not a Problem for 2014 Triton Boat Owners

24-Hour Dispatch with Boat US Angler Trailer Assist

ASHLAND CITY, Tenn., March 19, 2014 – A new partnership between Triton Boats and BoatUS Angler will bring roadside breakdown assistance benefits to buyers of 2014 model year Triton boats. The benefits program provides a membership in BoatUS Angler and its “Trailer Assist” program, which provides a full year of roadside tow vehicle and boat trailer breakdown assistance, including towing both the tow vehicle and boat trailer up to 100 miles to the nearest repair facility, safe area or home. BoatUS Angler’s Trailer Assist program also includes 24-hour dispatch, flat tire, jump start and lock out assistance, fuel delivery and ramp winch service, all of which are provided through a nationwide network of 18,000 roadside towing service providers with the right equipment to do the job. There is no cost to the boat buyer for the benefits program.

Triton Boats is one of America’s leading manufacturers of fiberglass and aluminum fishing boats from 16- to 24-feet, and understands that sometimes the unexpected happens while towing down the road. Triton’s complete line-up of models includes everything from tournament-level bass boats and salt and freshwater fishing boats, to fish-and-ski boats, bass and crappie aluminum boats, as well as duck and utility aluminum boats. The company is known for using high-strength aircraft-style composite construction, and does not use any wood in the manufacturing process.

“Most roadside assistance clubs don’t service boat trailers, and none offer the membership benefits that BoatUS Angler does to help you catch more fish,” said Triton Boats Vice President of Marketing, Adam Adkisson. “We think that giving our customers a little help when they need it shows that we care, and combined with a great boat purchase, this partnership will improve their boating and fishing lifestyle.”

“Triton boat buyers can focus on fishing and having fun with family, while we’ll take care of the unexpected problems,” said BoatUS Angler Brand Manager Steve Levi. “Our Weigh-to-Win cash contingency program, which is offered complimentary with the Trailer Assist program, also helps our angling members earn extra cash while competing in Triton Owners Tournaments, BASS, FLW and PAA tournaments and the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship.” Additional benefits of the Trailer Assist program include BoatUS Angler Magazine and a nationwide ramp locator.

To get a year membership in the BoatUS Angler Trailer Assist program, Triton buyers must purchase a 2014 model year Triton boat from an authorized Triton dealer.

For more information on Triton boats, including 2014 models or dealer locations, go to: www.Tritonboats.com. Triton Boats are manufactured by Fishing Holdings, LLC.

Heartland Flooding Outlook

   Spring Flooding Outlook Looking Normal........

This week is Flood Safety Awareness Week across the U.S., and the Heartland is no stranger to flooding.  Several winter storms have pummeled the Heartland, leading many to believe that there will be a greater chance for flooding this year.  Hydrologist Mary Lamm is saying that low river levels, combined with dry soil and persistent snow cover means that there is less than a 10% chance for moderate flooding this spring........

News Release From BoatUS

VIDEO: Build a Fishing Line Recycling Bin This Winter

ANNAPOLIS, Md., March 18, 2014 – It’s hard thinking about fishing when most of country is still frozen solid. However, anglers anticipating the spring bite can make a difference with improving fish habitat this upcoming season by building a fishing line recycling bin with some help from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. All of the instructions to build a line recycling bin from affordable and easy-to-work-with plastic PVC pipe are explained in a short video at BoatUS.org/monofilament/build-a-bin.

The line recycling bins are suitable for any location where anglers gather, such as ramps, piers, marinas, docks and popular fishing areas. Bin builders can also get free stickers to affix to the outside that identify and give instructions on how to use the bin, as well as bilingual “no trash” stickers, simply by sending an email to Cleanwater@BoatUS.com.

“Once the weather warms up, you’ll be ready to install the bin and can arrange for clean-outs with help from fishing buddies, clubs, marinas or local agencies,” said BoatUS Foundation Vice President Susan Shingledecker.

As the bin fills up, discarded fishing line can often be dropped off at municipal recycling stations, or it can be mailed to the Berkley Conservation Institute where it will be used to make “Fish Habs” - artificial, underwater habitat structures that attract fish. Discarded line shipping instructions can be found at BoatUS.org/monofilament.

     Kathleen Ann Lundeen Flippo, 4/1/42 - 3/11/14

     Author of "Tow Takin"

Kathleen (Kathy) Ann Lundeen made her entrance into this world 4/1/42 on Beaver Island to her proud parents, Florence Carlson and Adrian Charles Lundeen. Starting her life on Beaver Island turned out to set the precedence to what she became passionate about: Life on the Mississippi River and all it encompassed. Born a River Rat, Kathy enjoyed all that the river had to offer from hunting, fishing and trapping, to canoeing through the back waters, to taking pictures of wildlife and river traffic. Her love of the River culminated with her marriage to W.P. (Pat) Flippo in 1981 that set her adventure for the River as the wife of a tow boat captain.

During high school, Kathy kept to her roots by working her summers and holidays at Sportsman Exchange in Clinton.  After graduating from Clinton HS, Class of 1960, she attended Minnesota Bible College in Minneapolis and worked at Dayton’s.  From there she came back to Clinton and worked at the Clinton Telephone Company where she later met her husband, Bob Keding, and in 1968 packed her bags to follow him to his new job in Denver CO where their first daughter, Kjersten, was born a year later

Click here to continue reading Kathleen's obituary

Kathy was a contributor to RiverBills in the early days of the website. She sent us pictures and news reports from the Clinton, Iowa area, she was an outspoken person about things on the river and was a wealth of river information.  Kathy always gave me a hard time because I would vacation in sunny Jamaica instead of going someplace nice and cold.

I never met Kathy in person, but she became a good internet friend of mine.

We will miss you Kathy !

Asian Carp Update

Carp Eggs Found Farther Upstream Than Before........

Last week, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that Asian carp eggs had been discovered some 250 miles further upstream from previously identified spawning areas in the Mississippi River.  Duane Chapman, fishery biologist for the USGS said that not many Asian carp have been found in that part of the Mississippi River, so it was a bit of a surprise to find the carp reproducing there.  Chapman added that as the carp advance further north, there will be a bigger impact on critical fisheries........

Missouri River In North Dakota

Oil Spilling Into The Missouri River........

Up to 33 barrels of oil spilled into the Missouri River, as floodwaters near the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone spilled out of their banks.  The floodwaters surrounded 16 oil wells, breaching one or the dikes around one well.  It is thought that the oil came from a storage tank that didn't have enough fluid in it to anchor it down.  The tank had about 33 barrels of oil in it, but it is not known how much oil actually leaked out........

Sunday we were the guest of the Marcums, Pat, Mike, Jeff and Danny, for a nice boat ride to Cabbage Key from Ft Myers Beach. The Marcums docked their boat, Three Quarter Time, for years at the Duck Club. They now have a condo and boat on Ft Myers Beach.

Cabbage Keys is old Florida resort on a small Island just west of Pine Island, FL. It has a nice restaurant and several cottages that are for rent. They have great food and known for the signed dollar bills on the ceiling and walls. They say 20,000. Nice grounds with pet turtles and ducks roaming the grounds. Dave Wick and I stopped here last week on our trip with Bill Roe's boat from Ft. Lauderdale to Clearwater Beach.

Zoomin' On The Zuma!

Here's Rosie standing next to our new Yamaha 125cc Zuma, the 15th motorcycle I've ever owned, and even though it's technically a scooter, it belongs on the list of motorcycles. You Harley riders will just have to live with that.
Even though a better deal could have been made on a larger used bike of some kind, once you begin to learn the ins and outs of scooter parking here in Key West, you can quickly see that smaller is better. If you can't find a secure place to lock your ride to a post or rack with a cable, you won't have it long, and the Zuma is the most stolen scooter in the Keys, mainly because it's the most popular.
Being a popular model, it will make selling it that much easier when or if the time comes to go somewhere else, but in a pinch we can stick this small vehicle in the cockpit for a trip to another marina or area. For the time being, we have the Zuma locked up next to our Yuba Boda Boda. I remember when I only knew about Schwinns and Chevy's.
