Back on February 17, the excursion vessel Captain Larry Don sank at her dock on the Lake of the Ozarks.  It is thought that the vessel sank due to a broken through-hull fitting that was damaged by ice.  So far, efforts to raise the Captain Larry Don have been foiled by the unusually cold weather.  Two salvage companies have backed out of the project, although the first company is considering coming back, pending negotiations over the valuation of the job........

Water Quality Issues Have Been Addressed........

The U.S. Geological Survey recently released a report that answers questions about the cause of elevated levels of E. coli at the Lake of the Ozarks Park beaches.  The report points to three specific causes for high E. coli levels:  Geese and waterfowl droppings along the shoreline, septic and sewer systems near coves and sediment along the beach.  State Representative Rocky Miller said that the good news is that these three issues have been addressed........

Missouri River At Fault For Smelly Water.........

Residents have been noticing a foul smell in the drinking water recently, and St. Louis officials are blaming the Missouri River.  Water Commissioner Curt Skouby says that the smell and taste should dissipate within a few days, but in the meantime, the water is safe to drink.  Officials are saying that snowmelt upriver, changing temperatures and naturally occurring material in the river is the cause of the odor........

Still waiting for summer, thought the groundhog said we'd have and early spring?
Is pretty cool watching all the different types of waterfowl passing through.
These pelicans were fishing right under my balcony. Many people have no idea that pelicans are ever in this area .

Lewis And Clark Statue Will Be Relocated........

It seems that Lewis and Clark are getting ready to head west again.  The 23 foot tall bronze statue of the explorers that has been a fixture along the St. Louis Riverfront since 2006 is going to be relocated.  Details of when the statue will be relocated, or where it will be moved to are not known at this time.  Apparently, the donors that paid for the statue are not happy about the amount of time the Lewis and Clark bronze spends in the Mississippi River........

US Army Corps of Engineers

Lake Shelbyville Fish Habitat Improvement Day Postponed

Lake Shelbyville - The Fish Habitat Improvement Day scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2014, has been postponed due to unseasonably thick ice still covering most of Lake Shelbyville. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2014. Volunteer registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Lithia Springs Boat Ramp Parking Lot and the work will begin at 9:00 a.m. Following the event, a free lunch is available for work day volunteers at the Lake Shelbyville Visitor Center.

Once again, volunteers are welcome to bring pontoon boats as well as jon boats. The artificial fish attractors are approximately 5 feet in diameter and are more easily transported on a pontoon boat. If there is a shortage of boats, it will slow down placement of the structures. Anyone interested in volunteering their boat is advised to contact Park Ranger Tyler Goble at (217) 774-3951, ext. 7019 before the work day for planning purposes.

All volunteers will receive aerial maps with coordinates detailing where the trees were placed for later fishing reference. Maps will not be supplied to the general public, so if you would like one, come join us for Fish Habitat Improvement Day! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville greatly appreciates lake patrons and surrounding communities for their support of this project and apologizes for any inconvenience with postponement.

For more information on this fish habitat project, contact Park Ranger Tyler Goble at (217) 774-3951, ext. 7019 or IDNR Fisheries Biologist Mike Mounce at (217) 345-2420.

Recently, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a dog from the ice-covered Lake St. Clair in Michigan.  A Coast Guard cutter found the pooch approximately 5 miles from shore.   It was reported that the dog had been attacked by foxes, and had dug burrows to protect itself, injuring it's paws.  Three petty officers placed the dog on a stretcher, and took it aboard their ship.  The dog is now in the care of an animal shelter, and has a new name....  Lucky....
