Missouri State Parks prepares for start of season at trout parks

Jefferson City, Mo. - Staff at Missouri State Parks three trout parks are gearing up for a springtime ritual the opening of trout fishing season on March 1. The season officially begins at 6:30 a.m. at Bennett Spring State Park near Lebanon, Montauk State Park near Salem, and Roaring River State Park near Cassville.

Opening day of trout season is an important Missouri tradition, marking the beginning of a season that runs until Oct. 31. In addition to premier trout fishing, visitors to the states trout parks can enjoy miles of hiking trails, lodging and camping options and on-site dining facilities.

Our park staff spend much of the year looking forward to the crowds that visit on opening day, and are expecting a successful start of the 2014 catch-and-keep trout season, said Bill Bryan, Missouri State Parks director. I encourage anglers to take some time to enjoy our world-class trout streams and then stop in at the dining lodge for a good hot meal.

Trout season in Missouri is a cooperative effort of Missouri State Parks, which manages state parks, and the Missouri Department of Conservation, which operates the hatcheries and stocks the streams with trout.

For more information on trout opening, visit Mo.gov or call Montauk State Park at 573-548-2201, Roaring River State Park at 417-847-2539 or Bennett Spring State Park at 417-532-4338.

Here is Michael Lorance of "Bullship" doing his best to make us not proud. Thanks a lot Mike,

Quad Cities Riverboat Operator Passed Away........

On Monday, Quad Cities entrepreneur Joe Schadler passed away.  Over the years, Schadler owned many businesses in the Quad Cities region, but he was probably best known for operating Celebration River Cruises.  He ran the Moline, Iowa based cruise line for nearly 30 years.  In 1984, Schadler commissioned his first riverboat, the 400 passenger Queen of Hearts.  Two years after starting the cruise line, he became a riverboat captain.  In 1998, Schadler purchased the 800 passenger Celebration Belle, and took over duties as the head chef.........

  Missouri Department of Conservation

Great things ahead for paddlefish snaggers

WARSAW, MO.–

With paddlefish season fast approaching, the Missouri Department of Conservation has encouraging news for snaggers.

Missouri’s paddlefish snagging season runs from March 15 through April 30. The state’s paddlefish snagging waters include the Osage River below Bagnell Dam, Lake of the Ozarks, Truman and Table Rock lakes, the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, and their larger tributaries. Artificial stocking sustains the reservoir fisheries. The quality of fishing varies from year to year because the Conservation Department stocks more paddlefish some years than it does in others.

That happened in 2001, when the Conservation Department’s Blind Pony Fish Hatchery produced its second-largest crop of paddlefish in history. More than 145,000 young paddlefish found their way into Missouri waters that year. Blind Pony had a moderately good year in 2007. Then in 2008, a particularly favorable set of conditions produced the largest crop of all time, an astonishing 260,000 paddlefish

.

“Spoonbills,” as they also are known, take seven or eight years to grow to legal size. After that, the number of fish from a particular year-class dwindles because of angler harvest and natural mortality. The 2001 year-class of paddlefish is mostly gone now, though a few large survivors – now weighing well over 50 pounds – remain. Much more significant than these few holdovers is the slug of fish from the 2007 and 2008 stockings. Anglers should notice these 6- and 7-year-old fish this year.

“The 2007 year-class is 7 years old and should start providing a good number of legal, 34-inch fish weighing 25 to 30 pounds,” says Trish Yasger, a fisheries management biologist with the Conservation Department. “When the 2008 year-class starts to come of age next year, we hope to see some really good paddlefish snagging, and it should continue over the next several years.”

Yasger is cautious about predicting a huge paddlefish boom in the coming years as a result of the bumper crop of 2008. Conservation agents broke up an international paddlefish trafficking operation in Warsaw last year, and she says the results of this large-scale poaching are hard to predict.

“We aren’t sure what effect that illegal activity might have had on the population,” says Yasger. “Poachers stole a lot of fish from legal snaggers. I think this will be a good year, but don’t want people to think that there will be a lot more 50-pound-plus fish in the near future.”

Yasger noted that weather always plays an important role in determining paddlefish anglers’ success. Paddlefish are easiest to catch when they swim upstream and congregate below dams in response to warm spring rains. The best snagging conditions occur when water temperature reaches 50 to 55 degrees and there is an increase in flow.

Yasger says this year’s peak action could be delayed by unusually cold winter weather.

“The heavy snowfall and extremely cold weather we experienced in February are still making themselves felt in stream temperatures,” said Yasger. “A spell of unusually warm, sunny weather could speed things up a little, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen before March 15, based on the extended weather forecast.”

Yasger said paddlefish season often gets off to a slow start. That is because the opening and closing dates are set to ensure that the season brackets the fish’s spawning run.

“Paddlefish don’t often start running upstream as early as March 15,” said Yasger, “and it would be very rare for the run to extend past April 30. We don’t usually see lots of big fish being caught on opening day. Harvest early in the season is typically dominated by local fish and small males. As water temperature and flows increase, you will start seeing more of the larger females.”

The minimum legal length limit for paddlefish at Lake of the Ozarks, Truman Reservoir, Table Rock Lake, and their tributaries is 34 inches, measured from the eye to the fork of the tail. The minimum length limit is 24 inches in the Osage River below Bagnell Dam and in other Missouri waters.

Anglers need current fishing permits to snag paddlefish or to operate a boat for snaggers. If you are fishing on Lake of the Ozarks and its tributaries, the Osage River below U.S. Highway 54, or on Truman Lake and its tributaries, you must stop snagging for any species after taking a daily limit of two paddlefish. Check the Wildlife Code book for further details about paddlefish regulations.

Yasger notes that many snaggers land paddlefish with gaffs. This can fatally injure sublegal fish. Using large landing nets prevents injury, so anglers can release sublegal fish unharmed, allowing them to grow to legal size.

Even Setting Still, Things Break

When the Fenton gang was here last week, Robert "Ferd" Frank was nice enough to take some photos, and even nicer to send them to us once they got sorted out.
I explained to Ferd, that even though I do take a fair amount of photos on our travels, I like it when we have company and someone else is doing the camera work. I can then concentrate on the "captaining duties". There is distraction enough when the boat is loaded with passengers, let alone me having to drive and take photos too.

Just look at this photo that Ferd took when we were all at the Hogfish Bar!
Check out his website at ferdworks.com for more of his spectacular photos.
As indicated by the title of this blog, we still get systems failures on the boat even while parked here dockside. Like I told Eddie, one of the Fenton visitors, when he asked me how much do we work on the boat; I told him we are usually working on something every day.
The latest thing to go wrong was found when Rosie flushed the toilet in the master head yesterday morning. The pedal wouldn't actuate smoothly, and the ball valve wouldn't seal, making the vacuum pump continue to run. My previous experience tells me that the shaft that connects to the ball valve was probably broken. This happened two years ago and the shaft and ball valve seal kit I bought at our local boatyard had some whiskers on it, meaning the dust was so thick on the packaging that I knew it was the old style, also meaning that the shaft was made of the original plastic, and not the bronze ones now sold.

US Coast Guard News Release

Mississippi River Reopens at New Orleans With Restrictions

NEW ORLEANS — The Mississippi River has reopened with restrictions as of approximately 1:30 p.m. as the Unified Command continues response operations in connection with the E2MS 303 incident near Vacherie, Monday. A successful flight with unified command, state and federal on-scene coordinators, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the affected portion of the river and determined the river was safe to transit with restrictions. Mariners must comply with a broadcast notice to mariners being issued for river transits by the Coast Guard. It is calculated that approximately 31,500 gallons of light crude oil was discharged from the collision of the E2MS 303 tank barge and the motor vessel Lindsay Ann Erickson, a towing vessel, into the waterway Saturday. Response crews with Environmental Safety & Health, an oil spill removal organization, has strategically deployed containment boom to protect the water intakes for three parishes in the affected area. All impacted water intake facilities in the affected area are taking precautionary measures to prevent contamination. The unified command has confirmed with local officials that there are no impacts to drinking water. The Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health is conducting air monitoring for air pollution threats. No exposure concerns to the public have been detected through this monitoring. The unified command consists of the Coast Guard, Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office, Environmental Safety & Health and Forefront Emergency Management. Also responding are representatives from Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and with participation from the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness along with St James and St John the Baptist parishes. There are currently no reports of oiled wildlife. "Our highest priorities in this response are the safety of the public and responders, and protection of the environment, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Rebecca Ore, E2MS 303 Incident Commander.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. - See more at: click here

    Neighbors of the Mississippi

    Annual Board Meeting

Our organization is very concerned with what the northern Mississippi region is trying to do. They are wanting to increase the size of their levees in width and height. If they get the go ahead to do this it will be devastating to us that enjoy the river here. We will be the overflow area for the Upper Mississippi and be flooded continually. Our organization, which consists of Pike, Lincoln and St. Charles Counties, have over the past three years have made several trips to Washington D.C., Jefferson City, MO and Springfield, IL, just to name a few. We have State representatives involved to help with our cause. We know there are thousands of people that live, work and enjoy recreational activities that don't know about our organization.

The annual meeting of the Neighbors of the Mississippi will be February 26, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Winfield High School on Highway 47 in Winfield, MO

Abandoned Truck Found, Search On For Owner........

Last Thursday, an abandoned truck was found along the Meramec River at the Tezsars Woods Conservation Area.  The police were sent to the home of 41 year old John Pena, after his family requested a well-being check.  Pena was not there.  Officials then pinged his cell phone, which seemed to be located at the conservation area.  Responders found Pena's truck near the river, and began searching for him with K-9s and rescue boats........
