Bill,

I came to this photo that I down loaded back in 2012. That is my 89 year old co-fisherman and I working the bank below the Food Deck, and I look at the photo of the ice and snow out there today. I am so tired of snow and cold and I am so ready for spring. don’t tell anyone but I find some nice bass along the line.

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

Original St. Louisans Attracted By Landscape........

At one point in time, the Midwest was covered by a warm shallow ocean.  Then came a series of ice ages that may have reached as far south as St. Louis.  The glaciers gouged deep valleys for the ice melt, which formed the Illinois, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.  The confluence of these rivers near what is now St. Louis attracted early settlers.  The earliest clear indications of settlement in the region are the earthen mounds that were once along both backs of the Mississippi River........

A RiverBills Sticker Sighting.... was sent to us by Capt'n Ernie Moretti who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser.......  Living on Sponge Cake

Hi Bill:

I missed the PYC Eagle Party this year because I was at the STL Blues hockey game in Raleigh NC the night before. We were visiting good friend Scott (center) and his wife Ann who now live in Durham NC. Scott is a former river boater and my dock neighbor at John's Boat Harbor back in the day. Our buddy Billy, who cruises the Alton Pool on his Kawasaki Jet Ski, was on the trip as well.

Believe it or not, there was a River Bill's Sticker sighting during the pre-game warm up. Hey, we're still near the water! It just happens to be frozen. It is still water sports you know?

See you on February 27 on River Bill's Night at the Boat Show (if not before).

Thanks...
Ernie

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in  2013 ........  were sent to us by Kim Mueller

Hi! My name is Kim Mueller

We are huge boaters and love being up in Grafton/Alton/St. Charles! Though the pictures may not be unusual, each picture does have a story...

Picture 1 - This is of our 97 Cobalt 293. This was taken last summer (2012) while I carefully floated on my raft in the water and juggling my camera by the River Road (cool rock formation in the background)!
Picture 2 - This was on my 34th Birthday after the Boat Parade on the 23rd of July - awesome!
Picture 3 - The picture of the Gypsy Rose was taken this past summer (2012) while we were enjoying the wine festival at the Loading Dock!
Picture 4 - Lastly, the final picture was taken up on the Mississippi this past December 2012, on one of the hose warm Sunday's we had! We are sitting in our 12foot Pickle Fork Boat!

Illinois River Shipping

     Salt Deliveries Slowed By Ice........

Salt supplies are being taxed by icy conditions across Illinois, but barges carrying salt to replenish depleted stores are being slowed down by the partially frozen Illinois River.  Barge companies are having to use smaller tows to break up the ice.  Barge operators are saying that icy rivers are a common problem, but this year's frequency of storms has made things difficult.  So far, the salt supplies for most municipalities are holding out.  Alton is adding aggregate to their salt to stretch the city's stockpile........

Friday afternoon, a ceremony was held to name the Missouri approach to the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.  The approach is named for Andy Gammon, a carpenter who was killed during the construction of the New Mississippi River Bridge.  Gammon died when a piece of equipment fell from a work barge into the river on March 28, 2012.  Gammon's death was the only fatality associated with the construction of the new bridge........

Eads Bridge Turns 140 This Year........

Amid the fanfare surrounding the opening of the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, another Mississippi River bridge at St. Louis will be celebrating it's 140th birthday.  The Eads Bridge opened in 1874, and it was considered to be an engineering marvel.  The span required the invention of new tools and construction techniques while it was being built.  The Eads Bridge also served as an inspiration to the builders of the Stan Span........

Hi Bill,

Attached are some photos from the 2013 St. Louis Boat Show on RiverBill's night. Hayden and his buddy Cole had fun catching fish and checking out all of the new boats on display. The St. Louis Sail & Paddle booth was located right next to the RiverBill's area and their nice representatives allowed the young captains to play on their Hobie Kayaks. It was a fun night for all and we look forward to catching up with our river friends soon at the show this year!

Missouri Stat Highway Patrol News Release

Troop F To Offer Certified Boater Safety Course

Captain Gregory D. Kindle, commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City, announces a boater safety certification course being offered to the public on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Troop F Headquarters, 2920 N. Shamrock Road, Jefferson City, MO. The class will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m. There is no fee for this course; however, students are required to pre-register online as seating will be limited. Students are also advised to bring a snack or sack lunch to the training. For more information, to register for the course, or to obtain a complete listing of where other courses are being offered, you may visit the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Web site, www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. A Boat Safety Education & Certification link can be found on the left side of the Patrol's home page under training. On the day of the class, the “Boat Safety” link also will post if the course is being canceled due to an insufficient number of participants.

Missouri law requires any person born after January 1, 1984, to carry a boater safety certification card along with a picture I.D. anytime they operate a vessel, which includes personal watercraft, on Missouri lakes. Any student who successfully passes the course will be eligible to order the boater safety certification card for $15.

The Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint and everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life and Wear It!!!
