Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2013....... was sent to us by Ben Krause

Hi Bill,

Notice the end of the boat ramp at George Winter park. I have never seen it this low in my life. I also have never seen a kayak on the water in January so I snapped a pic of that too. Both pics were taken on 1/5/13. The photo of the kayak was taken at Mini HaHa park in Sunset Hills. I hope to someday see these pics on riverbills.

Hey Bill,
This pic is from the first time I took my kayak to Florida a few years ago. Was honestly a bit nervous when I saw this large dorsal fin coming right at me fast. Was relieved when I saw the blowhole . They've rubbed right  up against side of kayak.

Bill,

We were on the River January 11, 2013 in my restored 1972 V-153 Futura Glastron. Saw many Eagles. Did not get any good pics of Eagles. Went slow though an ice field in Lake Center Marina (no scratches on hull). Floated down Ski Shoot with some friends. There were even two boats on Enterprise Island.

Keep up the good work on the Website,

Funding For Missouri River Study Withheld....  Again....

For the third straight year, federal officials are prohibited from funding a Missouri River environmental study.  Missouri Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer had introduced the amendment to the $1.1 trillion spending bill that will bar funding for the Missouri River Ecosystem Restoration Plan.  Luetkemeyer says that the plan was originally intended to prevent the loss of habitat and restore endangered species, but it has transformed into a federally funded platform for environmental activists who have little respect for river communities........

Hi River Bill,

I don't know if you're still in Jamaica or if you're back home, but I wanted to share a few photos with you of the Gypsy Rose III at the Chicago Boat Show! We're here for the first time, and it's a great show! The photos are of our "booth", Capt Tim and Keith Ogulnick (the head of the Chicago Boat Show), and a mysterious guest who showed up at our display. We're here through Monday (Martin Luther King Day), so if anyone is looking for something fun to do this weekend, they should head up to "Chi town" and check out the Boat/RV Show.

See you on the river!

News Release From BoatUS

Four On the Water Boat Towing Service Captains Honored for Heroism
An "Auto Club" for Boaters Provides Reliable Help 24 Hours a Day

CLEARWATER, Fla., January 16, 2014 – Last year, over 70,000 recreational boaters called BoatUS Towing Services for routine on the water assistance. Engine breakdowns, running out of gas or running aground were typical requests. However, the captains across the nation who helm the 600 red towboats of the TowBoatUS and Vessel Assist fleets are sometimes put in the center of life-threatening emergencies. The on the water boat towing service recently honored four of its towing captains for their life-saving efforts at a ceremony capping off the annual BoatUS Towing Services conference held in Clearwater Beach, FL.

The captains were honored with “Woody Pollack” awards, named after a well-respected towboat captain in the fleet who died at an early age. “Our guys are not in the rescue business, but their actions save others,” said BoatUS Vice President and Director of Towing Services Adam Wheeler. “We are very proud of them.” Here are the details on the incidents:..... Fishy Tales From Sparks, Nevada

Thousands Of Dead Fish In Nevada Lake........

Officials with the Nevada Department of Wildlife are trying to determine why approximately 100,000 bass, catfish and trout have died in Sparks Marina.  The fish kill was likely caused by an unexplained drop in dissolved oxygen levels, but scientists are not sure why.  Back in December, fish biologists confirmed that about 3,000 dead fish were found in one portion of the lake, but that was believed to have been an isolated incident.  Since then, no living fish has been found in the 77 acre lake.......

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Even The Weather in Key West Can Be Disagreeable

As anyone who might be mistakenly reading this blog may know, the very northern part of the United States was deep into a deep freeze during the first part of this year, and even though Florida escaped the most frigid temperatures, even Key West's climate was less than desirable for the last two weeks. But we managed to have some fun, and I was able to scrape together some boat related items to pass along for this blog, which is getting increasingly harder to do with us camped here at the dock.
We were able to get out in the dinghy on the weekend just after New Year's Day. We didn't venture out too far because a front was due to arrive, and I wanted to be able to high tail it into the harbor if the weather started to turn.
We gathered up Holly and slipped on over to the south western tip of Boca Chica Key, where there is a somewhat shallow spot just off the shore that has a nice clean sand bottom, just a few inches of water, and enough activity in the way of Jet Ski tourists and local boaters to provide a modicum of social activity.
We talked to a few locals who came over to meet Holly and we also met the owner of Hurricane Hole Marina, who added some juicy tidbits to our knowledge of the area.
I'd say we had a full afternoon before the clouds rolled in and we scampered back into Stock Island Marina Village just as the weather turned sour for the next couple of days.

The much anticipated visit from two of Rosie's cousins arrived on January 8th. In the picture, Rosie's cousin Don is on the left, then his wife Michelle. Then it's Denny and Rosie's other cousin Roseann. We were at the Conch Republic, having all taken the taxi downtown from Stock Island.
While we were there I got a message that another acquaintance was in town from St. Louis with a friend of his and we were soon joined by Joe Boyer and his friend Vickie, who lives in Orlando. We finally cashed in our chips at the Hogsbreath Saloon, much later that evening than we should have.
The group was staying here at the marina in one of the "boatels", which are just little floating motel rooms. The location was great for us, as it allowed us to visit with everyone when we wanted to, but they also had their freedom to do what they wanted, leaving us out of some of the touristy stuff that we've gotten our fill of.

Roseann and Denny were visiting us in the cockpit of Swing Set one afternoon last week when we saw one of the staff here showing a couple around the facility, coming onto our dock, but stopping short of getting within howdy do range.
The principal character was none other than Jimmy Buffet. He flew in on his seaplane to scope out the marina. One of the things he did was buy some Landshark Beer. Poor fellow. I didn't take this picture above, Jimmy is on the left. I call him Jim.

FISH TALE

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2013.......was sent to us by Captain Mark Newlin !

Heya Bill,

Here's a fish story for you.

I was paddling on the Meramec down in The large cove a mile from Winter park, and I saw a small black thing bobbing in the water . I paddled over to it and found it was the handle of a fishing pole. When I picked it up it started pulling and I realized there was a fish on the line. I reeled it in and found I had a large Bass.

I actually hate fish so I yelled over to a couple in a bass boat on the beach and asked if they wanted a fish.

The lady said they were fishing all day and the only bite they had was one that yanked their pole in 2 hours earlier. I asked her what kind of pole it was and of course it was hers. We had good laugh and I even had her hubby take pic so I could prove the story was true.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study acknowledges that commercial and recreational boaters are heavy users of the Chicago-area waterway system, and recognizes that measures must be enacted to mitigate negative effects that the eight proposals contained in the report.  However, the Great Lakes Boating Federation is saying that the study does not sufficiently address the interests of anglers or boaters in the Mississippi River Basin or the Great Lakes........

Bill,

Went down to MRH to check on my boat and snapped this picture of Our Lady of the River.

As I looked at the Bluffs, I realized that I don’t remember ever seeing the Bluffs with snow on them.

Amazing site………

Bill,

Thursday Jan.9, A frozen day at Port Charles. Looks like you could walk over to 521. All the eagles were about a mile down river near masons chute. You could see them fishing and playing on the ice.

Metro East Levees

Feds Allot $3.7M For Wood River Levees, Officials Seek More........

Saturday night, Congress passed a federal spending bill that includes $3.7 million to continue ongoing repair work to the Wood River flood protection levee close to the Melvin Price Lock and Dam.  This spending bill also allocates $200 million for levee repairs across the country.  Illinois' federal lawmakers are calling on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to spend an additional $31 million on urgent repairs to the Wood River Levee as soon as possible.  If these repairs are not completed before the next major flood, the levee may fail, threatening expensive infrastructure and the Wood River Refinery........
