Hey Bill,

I came across these pics from a couple summers ago.

The pics are of a truck at George Winter park that was left running while owner got ready to unhook Seadoos.

First two are of it sinking and the last three are me pulling it out with my Big Bronco.

Boat Manufacturer

Crews Building Replica Of 16th Century Spanish Galleon........

For the past two years, workers have been putting together a replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon used by explorer Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo to discover San Diego Bay.  The vessel, San Salvador, will be a historically correct replica of the first ship to land at San Diego.  The vessel is only approximately 80% completed, and about a year behind schedule.  Ray Ashley, president of the Maritime Museum stated that the delays have been good for the project, as more schools have been able to check out the ship while she is under construction........

Chicago Ship And Sanitary Canal

"Invisible Fence" May Not Work As Advertised........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released an assessment of the electrical fish barrier, indicating that it is not as effective as it is intended to be.  The barrier is meant to stop the Asian carp below the water's surface, while allowing vessels to move unaffected above the surface.  However, it seems that barges crossing the canal "suck" fish through the barrier, weakening the electrical charge enough so fish can swim through.  Sonar cameras have shown schools of fish swimming through the barrier........

Pictures of the Day .... were taken on the St. Louis riverfront.

It's a picturesque view of the St.Louis riverfront with the King Bridge and the Eads Bridge in the distance.  The picture was taken from the old casino landing where the Admiral was once moored..

The reality of the picture is the homeless people huddled around a fire in the lower right hand corner of the picture.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2010.... were sent to us by Capt'n Bill Mixon

Bill - over Christmas we were going through old photo albums.

Here are pictures of Little John (winter 1983) trying to break ice so we
could go for a boat ride on the Free Spirit.

Didn't quite make it. But the effort showed valor and determination.

You just gotta love river rats.

Happy Holidays to you and all your readers

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2012 .... were taken on the St. Louis Riverfront on Christmas Day. it's a plastic barrel raft setting in front of the helicopter barge.  The raft is outfitted with a plastic captain's chair, oars and oar mounts.  It even has an extra set of oars and an extra plastic chair.

Eight plastic barrels, a sheet of plywood, a few of 2 x 4s.... and you have yourself a spiffy home made raft.  I imagine the tops of the barrels are cut away for ease of fastening the 2 x 4 cross members and for ease of bailing if the the barrels become filled with water......

   Corps Acknowledges River Issues........

Over the years, several bills have been introduced in Congress that are intended to upgrade the aging lock and dam system in the Mississippi River Valley.  So far, no large scale projects have been approved.  Mike Petersen, Chief of Public Affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said that the Lock and Dam No.27 at the Chain of Rocks is a prime example of a rehab project, in which most of the key moving parts have been replaced........

Missouri Lakes

Christmas Trees To Become Fish Habitat........

Once again, the Missouri Department of Conservation is accepting Christmas trees that have been retired.  The trees will be converted into artificial fish habitats which will be placed into two St. Louis area lakes.  The lakes are man-made, and as such, there is not much woody cover for invertebrates, which are a good food source for small fish, who in turn, attract larger fish.  The trees will be accepted through January 13th, at Creve Coeur Lake and at Lake 34 in the August A. Busch Conservation Area........
