Harbor Island Near San Diego, California

    Charred Chris-Craft Towed From Marina........

On Tuesday, the charred hull of a Chris-Craft was towed to shore from Harbor Island Marina, near San Diego.  On Monday morning, the vessel caught fire, and took firefighters approximately an hour to extinguish.  Crews had their work cut out for them, as the port side of the vessel sustained heavy damage.  They were required to invent attachment points for tow ropes.  Float bags were utilized to help with the recovery effort.  The boat was towed to Marine Group Boat Works, where it will be determined if it is totaled........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Making Ourselves At Home

If you own a boat, and you are not busy, you are not taking care of it. I don't mean you have to be doing something every minute of every day, but finding at least something to do for a couple of hours a day should be easy to do.

The picture above is one of our gray water sump box, and installing the deck plate on the cover of it was one of my little projects I did lately to make life easier on the boat. Even though doing boat chores is necessary, I'm always looking for ways to make the chores easier.
The gray water sump collects the water on our boat from three sinks, two showers, and the condensate lines from the two air conditioning units, and then when the float switch detects enough water in the box, the pump kicks on and pumps the gray water overboard. This eliminates extra through hull fittings on the side of the boat.
The sump box needs to be cleaned out regularly, because the liquid soap we all use goes down the drain as suds, but eventually turns into little hard bars of soap, clogging up the pump, or making the float switch not operate properly.
Since we have owned Swing Set, I've replaced the original switch with one that is free floating, (the original switch was one of those that operate inside of a little blue box, and the box always gets gummed up with soap residue and the switch won't float.) I've replaced the pump because the original just quit, and I've replaced the Plexiglas cover with a Lexan cover. The Plexiglas cover cracked because Plexiglas is more pliable than glass, but not as forgiving as Lexan. I also replaced the cover gasket, and exchanged the 12 nuts on the cover screws with wing nuts, making it easier to remove them to service and clean the box.... .....  go to    http://swingsetonthehook.blogspot.com/  to continue reading the latest blog

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in  2012.......  were sent to us by Capt'n Mark Dinzebach who hails out of Eagles Landing Marina...

Hi Bill,

Here's a couple of pictures I took today of the rusting hulk of the USS Inaugural, which sank during the flood of 1993. With the recent low water in the Mississippi River, the remains are almost fully exposed, just south of the McArthur bridge, at the foot of Rutger Street, and it has obviously become a target for graffitti artist.

The Minesweeper USS Inaugural (AM-242), a barge used as a site seeing helicopter landing pad, and a Burger King restaurant inside a steamboat replica known as the Spirit of the River, broke free of their moorings on August 1,1993. They were quickly rounded up by tow boats, and the Inaugural was moored south of its original location. On September 23, the Inaugural started listing toward its port side and sank shortly after.

It is often forgotten that the Inaugural was successfully raised and re-floated during the winter of 93/94. A dispute over salvage payment developed between the owners and the salvage company, which resulted in the Inaugural being allowed to sink again. It still lays in this location, and shows up now and then at the whim of the Mississippi River.

RiverBill says.... Thanks for the pictures Mark !

We dug up a few pictures of the ship when it was moored on the St. Louis Riverfront and one from WWII from the Wikipedia Commons Library

USS Inaugural (AM-242) was an Admirable-class fleet minesweeper. The Admirable class was the largest and one of the most successful classes of U.S. minesweepers ordered during World War II. Inaugural was launched on 1 October 1944, and was commissioned on 30 December, with Lieutenant John H. Pace USNR in command.  (Source: Wikipedia Commons)

        MILE 179.0 - MILE 169.0 - NAVIGATION RESTRICTION

In accordance with the Illinois Waterway Action Plan (WAP) Annex: Navigation has been restricted to one-way traffic through Peoria Lake from Mile 179.0 to Mile 169.0. This action will help maintain the current ice trail and to prevent sheet ice from breaking off the bank. Sheet ice and heavy ice gorges can be expected throughout Peoria Lake and channels may be blocked by ice in some locations. Mariners should be aware that
buoys may be unreliable due to icing conditions. Ice flows render reflective material ineffective and may drag buoys off station and sever buoys from their moorings.

Missouri Department of Conservation

MDC recycling Christmas trees to benefit fish and anglers

St. Louis, Mo.— Christmas trees can have a second life after the holidays by providing home for fish, and an advantage for anglers.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is accepting used natural Christmas trees to create fish habitat in Lake 34 on the August A. Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles and in Creve Coeur Lake in St. Louis County.

So how does recycling a used Christmas tree give fish something to celebrate? Turns out, a bunch of them can create the aquatic equivalent of an underwater condominium.

“A lot of lakes we work with are manmade and there’s not much fish cover in them, so we have to figure out how to put fish habitat in those lakes,” said Kevin Meneau, MDC Fisheries Management Biologist. “Christmas trees are one of the best ways to do that in winter.”

According to Meneau, the trees provide woody cover that makes excellent habitat for invertebrates. These are an ideal food source for smaller fish, which draws them in like a magnet. This in turn brings in bigger fish and creates a situation that gives a boost to the lake’s entire food chain.

“They also help young fish,” Meneau added, “because when the adults spawn their young can hide in those trees.”

The trees benefit some of the most popular fish that anglers like to pursue, including largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and crappie.

Since these fish typically spawn in shallow water, the trees are tied to cement blocks and submerged at depths of four- to- seven feet to give emerging fish easy access to their cover.

The underwater brush piles concentrate fish, so the submerged trees can be a boon for anglers as well. By noting the location of the trees, astute anglers can focus their efforts in these areas to improve their odds.

Meneau said the tree tops are usually visible for five to six weeks after being put into the lake before they become water logged and sink completely. This gives anglers until about mid-March to locate these potential fishing jackpots. Resourceful anglers often mark the sites for future reference on maps they make themselves or by using a GPS.

Recycled Christmas trees are requested at Lake 34 on the August A. Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles. The entrance to the conservation area is on Route D, two miles west of Highway 94. Signs on the area will guide visitors to the drop off point.

St. Louis County residents can bring their trees to Creve Coeur Park Lake, 13725 Marine Drive, where signs will lead them to the drop off point near the Sailboat Cove Boat Ramp.

Meneau said it’s best to drop off the entire tree, without cutting it up or removing any branches. Tree donors are asked to remove all decorations, including lights, garland and ornaments before drop off.

Christmas trees can be donated at these lakes between now and Jan. 13, 2014.

Levee Work May Mean Tax Levy........

During Tuesday's joint meeting of the Clear Creek and Preston levee and drainage districts, it was announced that property owners in four water districts along the Mississippi River between Jackson and Alexander counties may see a tax increase for levee work.  The work will involve the reinforcement of levees, and the re-lining of pipes.  The project is estimated at $1.2 million.  The districts are assessing property values in the districts in order to get an equal rate........

News Release From BoatUS

Low Cost Child/Teen Life Jackets Available for Camps, Schools, Non-Profit Programs

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 18, 2013 – Non-profit summer camps, schools, or local non-profit organizations providing on the water programs for kids have a strong need for safety, and having right-sized life jackets for kids is key. Now, the BoatUS Foundation’s Kids Afloat Program is offering kid/teen-sized, vest-style life jackets for just $5 each. However, supplies are limited and groups need to apply online at www.BoatUS.org/Kids-Afloat by February 28th, 2014. The Foundation will then choose those applications that best match program guidelines and post them to the Foundation’s website and Facebook page for public voting in the spring. Those with the most votes will have the opportunity to purchase the deeply discounted life jackets.

The life jackets are Type-II and Type-III vests – the most comfortable non-inflating type available today that normally retail for about $30 each. Applicants are allowed to request up to a total of 50 life jackets in infant, child, youth and teen sizes.

Said BoatUS Foundation Outreach Manager Alanna Keating, “Over the years we’ve received many requests from groups desperately seeking life jackets. These programs give kids a chance to experience being on the water and at the same time educate them on the importance of life jacket wear. We also hope that by involving the public in selecting the sites that receive the jackets, it will help promote these programs in their own communities,” added Keating.

The Kids Afloat program is for groups currently offering on the water programming, such as educational boat trips, fishing trips or canoe and kayak excursions that include safe and clean boating in their curriculum. However, groups that don’t currently include safe and clean boating education may also apply if they commit to add these topics to their program. “Our ultimate goal is see these kinds of educational programs grow – and keep kids safe while they’re participating in them,” said Keating.

For more information, go to www.BoatUS.org/Kids-Afloat.

Hey Bill,

Recently I came across two pictures I thought I'd share. Both of them are of my "Somebeach". Isn't it amazing how the same scene can look so much different? And how each conveys a completely different feeling or emotion? They say-beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, it's really hard to believe that anyone could see much beauty in pic 2-blahhh! But hey, I'm just a warm blooded river rat waiting for spring!

Owners Looking To Get The Queen Steaming Again........

Back in 2008, Congress allowed an exemption to maritime law that had allowed the Delta Queen to carry overnight passengers expire, and since 2009, she has been moored on the Chattanooga, Tennessee riverfront operating as a hotel.  The Delta Queen is facing an uncertain future in Chattanooga, as the city officials are looking to evict the Queen.  The U.S. House of Representatives has voted in favor of a new exemption for the Queen, allowing her to cruise once again, but the Senate has yet to act........

 Upper Missouri River Levees

     Levee Funding Process Clarified........

On Tuesday, officials set out to clarify confusion surrounding the funding of a proposed flood protection levee close to the Missouri River Correctional Center.  Early next year, nearby residents will be able to vote on whether they will pay for part of the $1.3 million project through a special property tax over 15 years.  The North Dakota Legislature has authorized $350,000 for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to pay for part of project, provided the residents approve the property tax........

         The Great Lakes Are Rising........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are saying that the levels of the Great Lakes are expected to remain within two to sixteen inches of their long term averages over the next year.  This is a contrast to last year, when the levels of the Great Lakes fell to the lowest level ever recorded.  Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are rising, and with a wet winter and spring, Lake Superior may rise above it's long term average........

Classic Boat Burns, Sinks After Boat Parade........

Monday, a woman had to be rescued from her boat after it caught fire and partially sank a day after participating in the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights.  Two workers were addressing electrical issues aboard the 57 foot 1963 Chris-Craft Constellation when the fire broke out.  The owner of the vessel was below decks when the fire began, and had to be rescued through a porthole.  The lighting used in the boat parade was left on overnight, but it is not certain if that caused the fire........

News Release From BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, Va., December 17, 2013 –- It’s already a brutal winter in parts of the country. If your boat and trailer are going to spend the snow season outside exposed to the elements, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) has five tips to protect your investment and prevent winter’s bitter effects from taking hold and causing problems down the road:

Water is enemy #1: Keeping the boat and trailer rig in a slightly bow-up position will allow water to drain. Don’t forget to remove drain plug and tie it to the ignition key where you will find it in the spring. Yes, do this exactly as instructed. Now. You will lose it otherwise – trust us, we know. Also ensure that the boat’s cover is tight and periodically check inside throughout the winter – just to make sure no water is accumulating and that no critters have moved in.

A little spray will do you good: Spraying water-and-dirt displacing lubricants such as Boeshield T-9 on metal trailer roller assemblies, winch gears and electrical connections will keep moisture away and rust at bay. Now may also be the time to take care of any rust spots on the metal trailer frame: sand, prime and paint.

Best boat theft prevention tip in the world: If you’re storing your boat in the driveway, turn it around 180 degrees, with the tongue facing towards the house. Not only will this keep your neighbors guessing all winter long about that name on the transom, but it will make the job harder for a thief to steal your boat and that’s the real name of the game here. Adding a lock on the trailer hitch only improves your odds the bad guy will look somewhere else.

What to do about boat trailer tires: In addition to being a theft deterrent, removing the tires and storing them inside the garage will keep the sun from damaging them. With the tires off, this may also a good time to repack the bearings. Block the trailer’s frame and secure plastic (contractor grade) trash bags over the hubs and brakes to keep them dry. If tires won’t be removed, position the trailer so that the tires rest on a piece of plywood or plank to prevent dry rot, as parking on grass can hasten a tire’s demise. Cover tires (again with plastic bags or covers) to keep the sun off and hubs and brakes dry. To avoid flat spots from happening, move the trailer periodically a few inches throughout the winter.

Don’t park under trees: Howling winter storms can snap off tree limbs. Besides adding unsightly stains, falling leaves and needles can make their way inside blocking transom drain holes, making your boat into a nice bathtub as it slowly fills with water over the winter.

Like an auto club for boaters and anglers, BoatUS offers Trailer Assist roadside assistance program, the only national roadside assistance service just for boat owners. In addition to BoatUS or BoatUS Angler membership of $24, for just $14 annually BoatUS’ “Unlimited” Trailer Assist will tow both a broken down boat trailer and tow vehicle (while towing) up to 100 miles to a location of choice. Flat tire service, jump-starts, lock out and boat ramp winching service are also included. For more information visit www.BoatUS.com/towing/trailerabout.asp or call 800-395-2628.

PHOTO RELEASE: Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to ferry grounding near Battery Island, NC -

US Coast Guard Pic

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard and partner agencies are responding to a report of multiple injuries after the Bald Head Island Ferry Adventure ran aground Tuesday in the vicinity of Battery Island near Southport, N.C.

The crew of the Adventure, a 64-foot ferry, contacted Coast Guard Station Oak Island watchstanders via VHF-FM channel 16 at approximately 9 a.m., reporting they ran aground and passengers aboard were in need of medical assistance.

Coast Guard Sector North Carolina watchstanders issued a marine assistance request broadcast and dispatched crews aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat and a 25-foot Response Boat - Small from Coast Guard Station Oak Island and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Bayberry to assist.

The crew of the Bayberry used their shallow water skiff to medevac 14 passengers from the Adventure and transfer them to the 47-foot MLB and the 25-foot RB-S. The crews aboard the two rescue boats then took the injured passengers to Deep Point Marina.

Partner agencies from Bald Head Island, Towboat US and the Brunswick Sherriff's department helped recover the non-injured passengers and transferred them to the Bald Head Island Ferry Ranger.

     National Great Rivers Museum

“Masters of the Sky”: Eagles, Falcons, and Hawks Oh My!

Alton, Ill. – The National Great Rivers Museum along with the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation announces the return of the “Masters of the Sky” show, presented by the World Bird Sanctuary, February 15, 16, and 17, 2014, at the National Great Rivers Museum.

These one-hour long spectacles feature live birds of prey and offer an opportunity to view eagles, owls, falcons, vultures, and hawks up close. The program will describe the challenges and obstacles these majestic creatures face on their annual migrations. While these rehabilitated birds may no longer soar in the wild, they provide an unforgettable opportunity to educate us about their role in the Mississippi River ecosystem. Spectators can look forward to specially trained birds that soar before your eyes!

Shows are available at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily during the 3 day event. Seating is limited to 200 tickets per show. Shows are conducted in a heated tent just outside the museum doors; please dress accordingly. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 4-12 years of age, and free for children 3 and under who can sit on a parent or guardian lap. Tickets may be purchased by visiting the National Great Rivers Museum, by calling 618-462-6979, or online at www.mtrf.org.

Cameras and binoculars for eagle spotting are welcome. Other activities that weekend will include crafts for the kids, photos with “Eric the Eagle,” a 14-minute film “Where Eagles Soar”, and more. Visitors will also enjoy free tours of Melvin Price Locks and Dam for a chance to see wild eagles from a bird’s eye view!

This program is made possible by the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the importance of Great Rivers. The National Great Rivers Museum is located off River Heritage Parkway (IL Hwy 143) at #2 Lock & Dam Way, Alton, IL 62024, adjacent to Melvin Price Locks & Dam. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and has free admission and tours of the locks and dam. For more information, or to purchase tickets to a “Masters of the Sky” show, call 618-462-6979 or toll free 877-462-6979, or go online to www.mtrf.org. News Release From BoatUS

ANNAPOLIS, Md., December 16, 2013 – The BoatUS Foundation is looking to fund Grassroots Grants projects that utilize new, innovative approaches to encourage safe and clean boating among the boating public. Organizations with the best grant applications will be awarded individual grants of up to $10,000 to implement their plan. However, applications need to be submitted by January 15, 2014 and public online voting on the applications will take place in early Spring 2014.

The BoatUS Foundation’s Grassroots Grants Program has funded over $1.3 million in local boating safety and clean water projects over the past 25 years. Last year, the national 501(c)(3) nonprofit more than doubled its individual maximum grant size to $10,000. “While the program targets small local groups, organizations and non-profits, we’re getting away from awarding funds for traditional signs, brochures, or boat show giveaway items,” said BoatUS Foundation Outreach Manager Alanna Keating. “Now, we’re looking to tap into the many exciting interactive and innovative ways to encourage behavior changes, including social media, the web or unique hands-on activities.”

Groups wishing to apply for one or more Grassroots Grants may go to www.BoatUS.org/Grants to view the guidelines and begin their application. Grant application may include videos, photos, graphics or anything to convey the group’s concept to help increase the chances of funding. The projects with the most votes will have one year to complete the grant project.

To assist grant applicants, the BoatUS Foundation has created a short video highlighting some previous grantees and their advice for applicants here: http://youtu.be/noUSjilYxP8. In addition, a second video with an overview of Grants program is located at: www.BoatUS.org/Grants.
