Today is my captain's (Bobby Mckay's) birthday!

He'd love nothing more than to take a boat ride! Unfortunately, our little runabout is too cold to take out. I figured the next best birthday wish was a shoutout on RiverBills!!!!!

Thanks,

Bill,

Went out Thanksgiving day and turkey sandwiches on a sandbar south of St. Louis in our 1945 Piper J-3 Cub floatplane. It's amazing how treacherous the water is down there even at low levels. Fast moving and a lot of eddy currents. Got a couple of pics of the new bridge.

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

Route 66 Bridge's Fate Up In The Air........

Back in 1932, the Route 66 bridge over the Meramec River was constructed, at a cost of $133,593.  At the time, the span was the first bridge to span the Meramec River that was designed to carry cars.  The bridge was officially closed to vehicular traffic in October 2009, and the driving surface was stripped off.  The future of the bridge is unknown, but several private organizations and federal entities are looking for ways to restore the bridge, and put it back to work........

Mississippi River Near LeClaire, Iowa

Sunken Tow To Be Raised This Week........

On Saturday, efforts to clean up spilled diesel fuel and oil from a sunken towboat near LeClaire were wrapped up.  As early as Tuesday, the submerged vessel could be raised.  Bryan Klostermeyer, chief marine science technician for the U.S. Coast Guard stated that the environmental impact of the oil spill is minor at this point.  Klostermeyer added that diesel oil is light, and stays atop of the water.  Iowa Department of Natural Resources personnel have tested water downstream from the spill, and those tests can back negative for diesel........

Missouri River Management

   Many Hurdles For Aqueduct Project........

In addition to the billions of dollars that diverting water from the Missouri River to western Kansas would cost, there are many hurdles to overcome before the project could begin.  There would be a considerable amount of time and effort involved in getting the states along the Missouri River to agree to the diversion plan, but Missouri's Governor Jay Nixon has already let Kansas Governor Sam Brownback about his disapproval........

Inspecting Mississippi River shoreline opened door to support DLA site visits nationwide

IMy career with the Corps started more than 25 years ago as a park ranger in the Rock Island District. I have a parks, recreation and tourism administration degree from Western Illinois University and only recently joined the Real Estate Division in 2010.

I've actually been doing real estate work for a long time. As a shoreline management ranger, I did inspections along 314 river miles of the Mississippi River. I learned a lot working with realty specialists, the process of granting Special Use Licenses for permitted items on land owned by the Corps. I issued the Shoreline Use Permits to cover private boat docks and lifts along the river.

I got involved with the Defense Logistics Agency Program when the Fort Worth District asked Ron Williams in my office who might be available to support their efforts. Through all my years with the Corps I have never volunteered for flood fighting or hurricane duty. This was the first time I raised my hand to volunteer because my kids are old enough now. And I'm glad I did.... click here to continue reading this story

Mississippi River At Vicksburg, Mississippi

Bridge Projects Intended To Reduce Barge Strikes, Stabilize Spans........

Mississippi officials have announced that two federal grants will allow them to repair the I-20 Bridge over the Mississippi River at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and keep barges from hitting it.  The first project would install underwater radar on the bridge, as well as Mississippi' other river crossings to alert tow vessel captains about shifting currents.  The second project would raise the span off of it's piers to reset bearings stressed by the shifting river bottom........

Hey Bill,
It's been a while since I went to your site, has really grown.

Anyway I'm hoping to rent a house. I looked at Portage Des Sioux this week , so you'll probably be seeing more of me next summer. Have a few Meramec river friends who I'm sure will drag their pontoons up when I get house they can tie up to back porch.

Only got up to my fav beach in back of Two Branch a couple times this year.

Missouri River Releases

by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

The last day of navigation flow support on the Missouri River is Nov 22rd at Sioux City; Nov 24 at Omaha; Nov 25 at Nebraska City; Nov 27 at Kansas City; and Dec 1 at the mouth near St. Louis. We are currently adjusting releases to meet the Kansas City flow target; flows at the other three locations (Sioux City, Omaha and Nebraska City) are above their respective flow targets.

Our current Gavins Point release is 30,000 cfs, and our latest forecast indicates that release rate will be sufficient to meet the Kansas City flow target of 38,000 cfs thru the end of the navigation season.

Therefore, starting on Nov 23rd, we will begin to reduce releases by 3,000 cfs per day until we reach 15,000 cfs. (i.e. 27,000 cfs on the 23rd, 24,000 cfs on the 24th, 21,000 cfs on the 25th, 18,000 cfs on the 26th, and 15,000 cfs on the 27th) We'll hold the 15,000 for about 6 days (thru Dec 2nd) in order to assess the situation at water intakes between Gavins Point and Kansas City. Then, assuming the intakes are okay, we'll continue to reduce
releases at a rate of 1,000 cfs every couple days until we reach the target winter release of 12,000 cfs.

Last winter we maintained Gavins Point releases at 14,000 cfs (or higher during period of ice formation) due to channel changes resulting from the 2011 flood and the extreme drought in the lower basin. Tributary inflows this fall are higher than last year due to the improved drought conditions, therefore we are optimistic about our ability to attain the 12,000 cfs target release this year. However, if intakes are unable to operate at 12,000 cfs release, we may be forced to release something slightly higher.

As we do every year, we will increase releases during period of ice formation to make up for the volume of water that will be locked up in river ice. These increases will be based on the weather forecast for the region and generally occur when temperatures dip down into the single digits, especially if accompanied with high winds.

The Mississippi should start seeing the effects of the end of Missouri River navigation flow support around the 2nd or 3rd of Dec (about 10 days after the first cut), and the bulk of the decrease from 30,000 to 15,000 by the end of the first week of December, approximately 10 days after we reach 15,000 cfs.

Of course, all of this is just a forecast. Our actual releases will be driven by what is happening in the basin - any rain or significant change in tributary flows will change this release forecast.

    Towboat Sinking Update........

On Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard said that approximately 85% of the estimated 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel and oil that was leaking from a sunken towboat in the Mississippi River near LeClaire, Iowa has been recovered.  Lieutenant Colin Fogarty of the U.S. Coast Guard stated that the river has been reopened, and the backlog of tows that had built up after the Stephen L.     Hydropower Plant Viewed As Green Power Source, Eyesore........

A hydroelectric power plant on the Mississippi River at Minneapolis, Minnesota would be a source of power for Minneapolis, but it would transform a portion of the river into a dry concrete eyesore during the summer.  The proposal would install a power plant near the St. Anthony Falls Dam.  Within the year, Crown Hydro LLC., intends to begin construction on the power plant.  Several governmental agencies still need to bless the project........

Missouri Department of Conservation

Eagle Days, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge

Mound City, Mo. – Winter cold brings migrating bald eagles and waterfowl to Missouri, and both will be especially watchable at the 35th annual Eagle Days event 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. The event is a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and various public and private conservation partners.

Wild eagles on the wing and geese and ducks in the marshes are often spotted by visitors during a driving tour of the refuge’s wetlands north of St. Joseph just off Interstate 29. Stations along the tour with be staffed by wildlife experts and offer displays or assistance with spotting scopes to view wildlife.

The Dickerson Park Zoo staff will present live eagle shows at the refuge headquarters hourly from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. These are eagles that have been injured and rehabilitated but cannot be returned to the wild. The shows offer a close view of birds of prey such as a bald eagle and a golden eagle.

See the website at fws.gov/refuge/squaw_creek/for more information and directions to Eagle Days at Squaw Creek.

Boat Gas News

Caution Suggested For E-10 Gas, Winter Storage........

With the cooler temperatures comes the task of putting the boat away for the season.  BoatUS is advising recreational boat owners take special precautions with E-10 gas, as well as go over their insurance policy prior to tucking the boat in.  Boats with removable tanks should be emptied, but vessels with built in tanks should be filled, with a fuel stabilizer added.  The insurance policy should be checked for ice and freeze coverage........
