From Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Tower Rock, also known as Grand Tower, is a rock formation and landmark island in the Mississippi River, in Brazeau Township Perry County, Missouri, near the town of Wittenberg, Missouri, and across the river from Grand Tower, Illinois.

Tower Rock has also been dubbed with many names over the centuries: Cap de Roche, Cap St. Croix la Tour, La Roche de la Croix, Rock of St. Cosme, Castle Rock and Devil's Tower.

The earliest mention by Europeans of this island is by French missionary Jacques Marquette in 1673:

"...we found ourselves at a river called ouaboukigou, The mouth of which is at the 36th degree of latitude. Before reaching it, we passed by a Place that is dreaded by the Savages, because they believe that a manitou is there, — that is to say, a demon, — that devours travelers; and The savages, who wished to divert us from our undertaking, warned us against it. This is the demon: there is a small cove, surrounded by rocks 20 feet high, into which The whole Current of the river rushes; and, being pushed back against the waters following It, and checked by an Island near by, the Current is Compelled to pass through a narrow Channel. This is not done without a violent Struggle between all these waters, which force one another back, or without a great din, which inspires terror in the savages...." we passed by a Place that is dreaded by the Savages, because they believe that a manitou is there, — that is to say, a demon, — that devours travelers; and The savages, who wished to divert us from our undertaking, warned us against it.      Cut In River Gauge Funds Worry Towns........

As part of the mandatory $1.2 million in federal budget cuts, some of the river gauges have been eliminated, including one located along the Licking River in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  Back in 1997, flooding along the Licking River killed five people.  These river gauges alert residents when the river levels are about to overtop their banks.  Municipalities are scrambling to find funding to pay for the gauges, or they run the risk of losing their advanced flood warnings........

US Coast Guard

    Winterization 101

Posted by LT Stephanie Young, Thursday, October 17, 2013

Preventative measures should be taken by boat owners to prevent vessels from sinking or being damaged by winter weather. U.S. Coast Guard photo. Sadly, summer is over and freezing temperatures are right around the corner. Freezing temperatures for boat owners means time for winterization! Even if you are in a region that is more temperate, winterizing your boat is important and fall is the perfect time to take the proper steps. Winterizing is important not only in ensuring the safety of your vessel but also in safeguarding the maritime environment. The Coast Guard often responds to cases of vessels sinking due to heavy snowfall or oil in the water at a marina due to poor winterization. Below are a few items to consider in preparing your boat for colder temperatures, heavy snowfall or long periods of not being used. While you may not be comfortable performing all of the below steps, we encourage you to contact your local Coast Guard Auxiliary unit, marina or boat dealer for winterization help. One last trip Enjoy one last trip on your boat – and don’t forget your life jacket – taking note of all the things you’ve been putting off during boating season. Winter is the perfect time to complete your “to-do” list of repairs, replacements or modifications on your boat. Unload Remove all the gear that has accumulated over boating season and take it home or place it in storage. Don’t forget to take home your fire extinguishers and have them inspected over the winter too! Be sure you drain your fresh water tanks, fittings or lines or you can fill them with non-toxic antifreeze. Pump out any holding tanks and don’t forget about icemakers, air conditioning systems, fish wells and bilge pumps. Clean There are many steps boat owners can take to prevent damage on their vessel from winter weather. U.S. Coast Guard photo. With all the non-essentials removed from your boat, you’ll have room to clean. Be mindful of the chemicals you are using and recycle or properly dispose waste from cleaning. For any questions on your engine, cooling or fuel systems, consult with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Haul out and wrap After you haul your boat out of the water, check the boat’s shaft, strut, cutlass bearing and propellers. Clean and disconnect the batteries. Finally, put on any covers or have the boat shrink wrapped. As with all boating tips, check your owner’s manuals for any special recommendations or concerns. If you have any tips for our readers on what works for you and your boat, leave them in the comments below! -

What Was Shutdown's Impact On Tourism?

Now that the first partial federal government shutdown in 17 years is over, the question remains:  How much damage did tourism in the Riverbend sustain?  Only the National Great Rivers Museum at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam is operated by the federal government, and as such, was the lone closure.  Apparently, a heavy tourism weekend was lost during the shutdown, and lost tourism revenues are estimated to be in the low to mid six figures........

Mississippi River Shipping

Funding Sought To Keep Commerce Moving........

Mayors from cities along the Mississippi River are pushing Congress to increase funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to keep commerce moving on the waterway.  The funds would be for dredging operations and improvements to infrastructure.  Over the past three years, ports have had to deal with droughts and flooding.  Last year's low water caused commercial traffic to shut down in some areas of the Mississippi River........

US Army Corps of Engineers

    Mark Twain Lake

Mark Twain Lake- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff at Mark Twain Lake have started working diligently to reopen facilities for the public. Even with the House and Senate voting to reopen the government Wednesday night, there are several steps that have to be taken before its recreational areas can be used by the public. Rangers will have to thoroughly inspect campgrounds and boat ramps before visitors can return--similar to what they do after severe weather. Rangers will make sure electrical facilities are working, restrooms are in good condition, and in general make sure everything is in order for public safety.

If you had reservations at a campsite during the shutdown, you can get a refund online at reservation.gov. If you have any issues with your reservations, the Customer Service number to call concerning this matter is 1-888-448-1474.

Despite the end of the partial government shutdown, the Halloween Walk (Pumpkin Event) originally scheduled for Oct. 18th & 19th is still cancelled at Indian Creek Campgrounds. The public will not be allowed to walk through the campground as the roadways will remain open for vehicular traffic. Any visitors wishing to enter the campground will be issued a visitor's pass to a specific campsite only.

Although the reopening process just began today, some campgrounds, ramps and facilities are already being opened for use. If you have any questions or would like a specific update on what is currently open for use, please feel free to call the project office at 573-735-4097.
