Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2012 ----    was sent to us by Capt'n Ernie Moretti, who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser..... "Living on Spongecake."

Hi Bill:

Maybe it’s because I had poor social skills, but when I was a kid, my Mom used to tie pork chops around my neck and send me out to the yard hoping the dogs would play with me? Years later, I am but an OLD DOG myself! But…things haven’t changed too much. Nowadays, my wife Sue sends me out to the back of our boat; sets up a couple tables full of cups of Margaritas; and hopes people will come by to play with me?

FYI…It worked!

See you on the River…

Illinois River Near Chillicothe, Illinois

Body Found In Submerged Car Identified........

On Monday, two Southern Illinois University researchers studying Asian carp numbers in the Illinois River were recruited to help search the river for a missing woman's car.  22 year old Julie Peters had been missing since late last month.  After about 10 minutes of scanning the water, they found what appeared to be a car.  The car was removed from the river, and an autopsy was performed on the body.  Dental records have confirmed that the body is that of Peters.  It appears she drowned........

Hi, Bill,

There was a chill in the air on Sunday, but we ventured down to Palisades Yacht Club for the festivities and to meet a couple of biker friends at the Rat Run. I thought if the bikers can withstand traveling 70 MPH on the roads we could handle 30 on the river. We docked at PYC, had a couple of brews and some food from Tony's on Main Street. That's Mary with Jen, Amy & Jessica and then again with Scott. We walked over to Longshot, met our friends Larry & Janell. That's them on their bike. Check out the crowd, and that's only a small sampling. Look! A RiverBills sticker sighting. We did not "plant" this, it was already there. Notice Mary's RB cooler cup, too!

See ya on the river!

Missouri Department of Conservation

Missouri waterfowl hunting forecast: Loads of ducks!

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Ducks are abundant. The table is set for them at many state-managed wetland areas. If the weather cooperates, duck hunting could be excellent in the Show-Me State this year. That’s the word from the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates this year’s total number of breeding ducks at 45.6 million. That is down 6 percent from last year’s record number, but still 33 percent above the long-term average. Mallard numbers were estimated to be 10.4 million, down 2 percent from 2012 but up 36 percent long-term. Long-term trends for other popular duck populations in this year’s survey include:

  • Northern shoveler +96 percent

  • Gadwalls +80 percent

  • Redheads +76 percent

  • Blue-winged teal +60 percent

  • Green-winged teal +51 percent

  • Canvasback +37

  • Widgeon +2 percent

  • Northern pintail and scaup -17 percent each.

With numbers like that, you might think good hunting is assured. But without quality habitat and favorable weather, a boom year for waterfowl numbers still can turn into a bust for hunters.

News Release From BoatUS

Berkley Conservation Institute's Jim Martin
Honored with BoatUS Foundation Environmental Leadership Award

Recycled Enough Fishing Line to Reach the Moon and Back 19 Times

PORTLAND, Ore., October 7, 2013 – Recycling used fishing line seems easy enough. Build some recycling line containers or bins, install them at the water’s edge and teach anglers to put the used line safely inside. Since 2008, the BoatUS Foundation has helped install over 2,000 line-recycling bins at docks, ramps and boat clubs. But none of this would be possible without a dedicated partner in the fishing industry who is committed to collect all of the line and ensure it’s recycled. This partner is Berkley Conservation Institute’s Jim Martin. Since 1990, Berkley has recycled nine million miles of fishing line - enough to reach the moon and back 19 times. For his hard work, dedication and expertise, Martin, Conservation Director with the Berkley Conservation Institute, is honored with the 2013 BoatUS Foundation Environmental Leadership Award. The award was presented at the 2013 States Organization for Boating Access (SOBA) Conference last week in Portland, OR.

“The award recognizes those leaders in the boating community who have made a significant impact advancing clean boating and educating boaters about how they can minimize their environmental impacts,” said BoatUS Foundation Vice President Susan Shingledecker. “Jim’s long-term commitment to fishing line recycling has allowed the concept and the program to really take hold nationwide. Fishing line can be a tough material to recycle, so Berkley’s devotion to this program is noteworthy.”

Beyond Martin’s work with Berkley Conservation Institute, he is currently the Chairman of the Policy Council of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership a leading organization working to ensure hunting and fishing access for all Americans. He also is a science and policy advisor for the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association and led the development of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, a model state conservation plan.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

The Bridge Formerly Known As Poplar Now Called Clay........

On Monday, October 7, a ceremony was held to rename the Poplar Street Bridge the Congressman William L. Clay Sr. Bridge.  The span was originally named for former St. Louis Mayor Bernard F. Dickmann, however, St. Louisans never really used the name.  St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay stated that St. Louisans "have a habit of calling things by names other than what was given to them"........

Lower Mississippi River

     Low Water May Affect Operations........

Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said that the Mississippi River could reach low water conditions that will negatively affect some of the industries and facilities along the river over the next several months.  Over the summer, the Mid-South region received lower than normal rainfall, which could lead to businesses having to seek special operations permits.  The Lower Mississippi River suffered low water levels during 2012........

Rend Lake

    Fed Shutdown Ruins Recreation Plans........

The partial shutdown of the federal government has forced the closure of campsites operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Over the past several months, Steve O'Neil had plans for a a crappie fishing trip at Rend Lake. O'Neil had reserved a campsite for four days.  O'Neil and his companions would have likely spent at least $1,000 at businesses around Rend Lake during their trip, highlighting economic penalties caused by the federal shutdown........

Illinois Scenic Byways

This Week Is Scenic Byway Week........

This week is the second annual Illinois Byway Week.  The director of the Illinois River Road Byway, Anaise Berry, stated that the term "scenic" refers to much more than beautiful scenery.  The scenic designation is applied because the byways have natural inherent qualities, including archaeology, culture, history, recreation and of course scenery.  The National Scenic Byway program began in 1995........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee

Low River Expected To Rapidly Rise........

Over the past week, the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee fell to drought level stages, but over the next four days the river is expected to rise 10 feet, thanks to heavy rainfall upriver.  The higher river levels should temporarily avert low water issues for barges and docking facilities in the Memphis area.  Low water levels can keep barges from getting to docks on McKellar Lake, which is the city's slack water harbor........

Another Sunken Freighter Found In Lake Superior........

Last month, search crews found the wreckage of a sunken freighter in Lake Superior off the shore of Thunder Bay, Ontario.  The 424 foot Scotiadoc was found in 850 feet of water, possibly making it the deepest shipwreck ever found in the Great Lakes.  The Scotiadoc sank in 1953, after being broadsided by the 451 foot long Burlington.  The collision occurred during heavy fog and rain.  The group that discovered the wreck, also found the wreckage of the Henry B. Smith off the coast of Michigan earlier in the year........
