Low Water Levels May Affect Industry........

Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stated that the Mississippi River may fall to levels low enough as to affect operations at facilities and industries along the river.  Over the past summer, the Mid-South region had below normal rainfall, which could bring low water conditions.  This could lead to businesses along the river seeking special operations permits.  Last year, the Corps had to dredge the river and many harbors to keep commerce moving along the Mississippi River........

The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Danny and Linda Stewart of the boat.......   Idle Wild Cove

Hi Bill,

We've got some river dawgs for you.

The black Pomeranian is Lou, his owner is my daughter, Mackenzie. The White Pomeranian is Napoleon and his owner is my other daughter, Madison. The Sheltie is named Lucky, and he is our family dog. Lucky is 10 and has been boating on the river ever since we got him when he was 2. The Poms are just over 1 year old, but started boating last September when they were just under 3 months old.

The German Shepard in the second picture is named Ceasar. He is just over 1 year old, too. He is friends with Lou, Napoleon, and Lucky, and his owner is Pat McCue

    Fall Colors.......

The mdconline fall color reporting is scheduled to start soon.

http://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/outdoor-recreation/driving-tours/fall-colors

According to Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Community Forestry Program Manager Nick Kuhn, this year’s fall color is expected to be good due to several factors.

“A wet spring and cooler summer gave trees what they needed and extended springtime,” said Kuhn. “Healthy trees with lots of leaves and recent warm and dry weather brought trees fully into the summer season in expectation of good fall color. The final part for great color will be the right conditions in fall, and those are sunny days and cool nights with no frost or high winds.”

RIP River Dog

 "Buddy"

The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Capt'n Chuck Street

All this time on the river and not one time did I ever send in a picture of my River Dog, BUDDY.

Well I wanted to do just that now, Buddy was a stray that came to my house one night during a storm and when I let him in out of the rain and dried him off he went to the couch and fell asleep, I fed him the next morning and let him out to be on his way and as luck would have it he found his way back at dark the next night and the next and well every night. since then, Buddy grew on me so much and was everything to me that a dog could be, He has been here 8 years since he showed up and never away from my side, becoming a 65 pound LAP DOG.

Buddy died last Sunday morning, September 8th, after a fight with pneumonia, at the vets emergency room. And even though he wasn't a pure breed or some fancy named pedigree, I wanted to give him a little spotlight time on your web site. Should have done this earlier but I never dreamed his time with me would be so short lived,

So here's to you River dog BUDDY..

you will forever be missed..

Car Found In River....  11 Year After Stolen........

Back in 2002, a 1997 Pontiac Firebird was reported stolen from a car lot in Sikeston, Missouri.  On Sunday, the car was finally found, in the Mississippi River Diversion Channel in Cape Girardeau County.  The level of the Mississippi River was low enough that a passerby was able to see the car.  Officials are saying that the thief likely swiped the car for a joyride, and then dumped it into the river........

News Release From BoatUS

After Fight, Boaters Get Reprieve With California Legislature

SACRAMENTO, Calif., September 17, 2013 – Last week, the national boaters’ advocate, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), and the state boaters’ watchdog group, Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC), reached out to Golden State boat owners to advise them of pending legislation, SB 436, that would have siphoned funds from the Harbor and Watercraft Revolving Fund for non-boating purposes. Monies for the fund come from boat registration fees, boat fuel taxes and other funds paid by recreational boaters – not taxpayers – and help pay for boating safety and invasive species prevention programs, docks, boat ramps and vessel sewage pumpouts throughout the state.

California Senate Bill 436 was passed Friday, September 13by the state legislature. However, the section of the bill that would have opened up the Fund to non-boating purposes was dropped at the last minute as a result of boaters speaking up against the move. BoatUS acknowledged its government affairs email alert campaign drove several thousand comments to Senate and Assembly legislators.

However, California boaters are not out of the woods. BoatUS advises it will need to continue to work with RBOC to be engaged in the Capitol as portions of the bill still potentially allow a grant or loan of $1,000,000 from the Harbor and Watercraft Revolving Fund to pay for emergency measures to prevent flood damage and erosion to streets and property along Hueneme Beach.

“Taking these funds to support non-boating programs would set a dangerous precedent,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “We will continue to be engaged on this issue to protect the integrity and effectiveness of the Harbor and Watercraft Revolving Fund. Many of these state dollars are matched by federal funds, which make these dedicated boater taxes that much more valuable to all waterway users.”

     US Army Corps of Engineers

Blood Drive Donors to Receive Free Camping.

Carlyle Lake – The American Red Cross in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting a blood drive on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross works diligently every day to keep an adequate supply of blood, especially in preparation for the summer recreation months when donations are needed. In the U.S. today, a blood transfusion is needed every two seconds. The need for blood is ongoing—24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give the gift of life to help meet the demand.

The Corps of Engineers fully supports the Red Cross efforts and will reward those participants donating blood with a certificate for one night of free camping at Carlyle Lake. The certificate can be used at any standard, single capacity, non-reservable site at McNair, Boulder, Coles Creek, Dam East or Dam West Campground. Those donors who would like to schedule an appointment ahead of time please visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: CarlyleLake

For more information on the Blood Drive, please contact the Carlyle Lake Project Office at (618) 594-2484 or e-mail at carlylelake@usace.army.mil.

Hey Bill,

Out working on the deck Sat afternoon 9/14/2013 in Herculaneum, MO and a guy was practicing his water landings, I guess? He came through about 5 times. The wheels fold up to the side of the plane for the water landing and the engine and prop are on top of the wings. Very cool to watch.

Thanks for keeping us all in the know on the River!
