Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers Confluence Heritage Area Dedication

CARLYLE LAKE – On Friday, September 13, 2013, the Corps of Engineers and Lower Kaskaskia Stakeholders Incorporated (LKSI) will be hosting a dedication ceremony for the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers Confluence Heritage Area. Lower Kaskaskia Stakeholders Inc. (LKSI) President Ryan Ford and Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Wolf, Deputy Commander of the St. Louis District Corps of Engineers will speak at the event. The dedication will take place at the Confluence Heritage Area (located at the Kaskaskia River Project) at 2:00 p.m. and last approximately 60 minutes.

A Challenge Partnership Handshake Agreement between the Corps, LKSI, Tower Rock Stone, A & K Rentals, Randolph County Board of Commissioners, Randolph County Archives & Museum, and the Illinois Historical Preservation Agency has resulted in the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers Confluence Heritage Area and Trail. The project includes a one mile round trip paved trail that is ideal for hiking and biking, and the Ed Crow “Crow’s Nest” stone amphitheater and fire ring for interpretive programs. The trail winds through bottomland forest and offers diverse native wildlife viewing. It leads visitors to the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers confluence, where the stone amphitheater and fire ring lets them relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the area.

Following the dedication ceremony, the LKSI will host a dedication for the Ed Crow “Crow’s Nest.” Mr. Crow was the executive director of economic development for the Randolph County Progress Committee for 20 years. His enthusiasm and dedication to Southern Illinois was evident in the success he achieved for this area.

Mississippi River At Quincy, Illinois

    Quincy Votes Down Hydropower Project........

Monday evening, the Quincy City Council voted down a letter of intent to further hydropower projects at Mississippi River Lock and Dam No. 24 and 25, effectively ending the projects.  Mayor Kyle Moore stated that Quincy has more pressing issues to attend to, and despite statements that project revenues would be realized quickly, the reality is that revenues would not be seen for 20 to 25 years........

Carlyle Lake – The American Red Cross in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting a blood drive on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Carlyle Lake Visitor Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The American Red Cross works diligently every day to keep an adequate supply of blood, especially in preparation for the summer recreation months when donations are needed. Boats will vary in size from small runabouts to 50' wooden Chris Craft Cruisers. Besides the boats, antique and classic outboards will be featured dating back to the early 1900's. The public is welcome to come see the classic boats and outboard motors at the Quincy Boat Club, just north of the Pier Restaurant.

Boats and motors will be on display, along with swap meet Saturday day and Sunday thru late afternoon.

Todd Young and Rob Ebbing are the show organizers and serve as host for the Quincy Boat Club. They will feature up to 8 of their own classic boats of their collection. The most recent restoration they completed is a 1946 Garwood 15' inboard boat. A popular boat after the the WWII, but unfortunately, very few are still exist and are running.

Several large Chris Craft Cruisers have signed up to make the two day trek up the Mississippi River from the St. Louis area Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. They are looking forward to enjoying an exciting boating weekend in Quincy show. Other participants are expected from the Chicago area, various Iowa and Missouri locations. The show has had participants over the years from as far away as Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

This years show is part of Quincy’s classic weekend with vintage go-cart races at TNT, West Quincy, Tri-State Lugnuts classic car show weekend at the Quincy Mall and Illinois Vet’s home and Smoke on the Water BBQ on the river!

New Pavement Going On The Poplar This Weekend........

Over the weekend, an new sticky, oily substance will hopefully help even out the bumpy ride on the Poplar Street Bridge.  This new substance, concocted by a company called Road Science, is intended to make pavement stick to the Poplar's steel deck.  This is a $1.2 million temporary fix, that will hopefully last four years.  MoDOT is working on a permanent pavement fix for when the span is refurbished in 2017........
