Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2012...... was sent to us by Capt'n Larry Demko and his wife, Susan, whoare cruising around  the US in their land yacht visiting friends !

Bill:

Susan and I are spending a week with friends on Lake James (in North Carolina near Asheville)

As usual, I'm "spreading the gospel" of Riverbills.com (I think you need to provide me with a Roman collar!)

Attached is a pic we took on the pontoon boat that came with house. (I still prefer boats with a pointy front!)

From left to right, at the top is:
Duane Fagg and Janette McKeown (our gracious hostess when we stay in Tellico Village)
In front is: Me, Mary Alice Fagg and our hosts on Lake James: Gary & Connie Fagg.

I'm always surprised by the quality of boating on these inland lakes. The water quality here is great. The water is pretty clear and water temp is about 80 degrees even though we're in the Smoky Mountains. I'd highly recommend it.

We'll be coming home to STL in mid-September and will have to face the real world!

In the meantime, I'll put up my two Riverbills.com bumper stickers in appropriate places and send you yet another pic.

See you soon!

Boating Safety

    ICP Arresting Drunken Boaters........

The Illinois Conservation Police is cracking down on drunken boaters over the Labor Day Holiday weekend.  Deputy Police Chief Joe Morelock is saying that boaters ought to use a designated skipper, and wear life jackets.  In Illinois, boating under the influence is a misdemeanor for a first offense, with penalties of up to a year in jail, and a $2,500 fine.  ICP officers will also be performing standard vessel inspections........

Opponents To River Project Seek Governor's Help........

Several organizations are seeking help from Missouri Governor Jay Nixon in stopping a project intended to help the endangered pallid sturgeon.  Recently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $3.5 million contract for the Jameson Island project, which will create a shallow water refuge for the young sturgeon.  The groups are opposing the dumping of the fertilizer-rich soil into the Missouri River, saying that it could contribute to the Gulf of Mexico dead zone........

From Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Arrow Rock is a village in Saline County, Missouri, United States, located along the Missouri River. This area of the state was called "Little Dixie" because so many early migrants came from the Upper South, bringing their slaves and culture with them.

Although the busiest river port in the county before the American Civil War, the population was 79 as of the 2000 Census (56 as of the 2010 Census). The musical films Tom Sawyer (1973) and Huckleberry Finn (1974), both based on novels by Mark Twain, were partially shot here. Arrow Rock Historic District has significant properties. The George Caleb Bingham House, home of the nationally known painter for several years, has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Updated Sunday at 5:00 AM

It really makes no sense to visit the Atlantis Resort Marina to just sit on your own boat and not go out, but everything at Atlantis is offensively expensive. We ate out for dinner on the two nights we stayed there, and it was nothing special. Staying at The Atlantis is not visiting The Bahamas, though. It's no more The Bahamas than New York, New York in Vegas is like the Big Apple.
I have been mentioning that we've had some mechanical issues with the boat. The main engines have been overheating for the last two or three months. Changing impellers hasn't helped. I think it's the heat exchangers. They get deposits on them and they can't cool the engine coolant via the raw water. I need to get them taken off and "boiled out" (really, just cleaned with acid our caustic), or I might rig up some hoses and clean them in place.
The generator needs the raw water impeller replaced. I didn't want to do it in The Bahamas in case I had a problem and needed some parts. I'll attempt to do this myself now that we are back in the states. With the generator operation being at questionable issue, coming back to the U.S. became more of a necessity for us.
The other thing is that this August was only the sixth year since records have been kept that there were no hurricanes. The fore casters say that the piper will be paid in September.
As it is, we really only came back two weeks early. In order to get to Key West by October 1st, and get some doctor visits and other things taken care of, we needed to be back some time in September anyway. There is some other reasons that it was good we decided to return.
We left Nassau mid morning last Thursday, for a 35 mile run to Chub Cay, which is on the southern tip of the Berry Island Chain. The ride was fairly pleasant and we set a hook at mid-afternoon with the skies threatening rain. I dove on the anchor to find that I have dropped it in what looked like sand, but was hard marl. The only thing keeping us from blowing into the nearby reefs was a thin sea plant of some sort that our anchor was hooked around. I swam back to the boat in quick order and got us out of there before the wind got worse.
We took the boat to a spot just outside of the entrance to Chub Cay Marina and found good sand and a calm anchorage, until the tide started changing and the surge had us bobbing around most of the night

Water Patrol Boat Collides With Another Boat........

Thursday night, a Missouri State Water Patrol boat collided with another vessel, causing injuries.  Officials are saying that a Water Patrol boat, piloted by Trooper Stephen Burgun hit a boat piloted by Brian Pecenka on the starboard side, causing it to flood and sink.  Apparently, Pecenka turned in front of the Water Patrol vessel, and did not have his bow lights illuminated.  Pecenka suffered serious injuries, and his three passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries.  Burgun suffered moderate injuries........

SUMMER HOURS
Mon - Fri - 9am - 5:30pm       Sat 9am - 4pm  Sun  Closed

US Army Corps of Engineers

St. Louis District encourages you to play it safe this holiday weekend

With the temperatures rising and the summer coming to and end, the St. Louis District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to help you have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day holiday.

While outdoor recreation is fun and healthy, the Corps of Engineers urges our visitors to expect the unexpected and think about these four safety tips.

Wear a life jacket.

◦ Statistics show that 90 percent of those who drown at USACE lakes and rivers may have survived if they had worn a life jacket.
◦ Drowning is the nation’s second leading cause of accidental death.
◦ Expect the unexpected. Accidents happen, even to responsible boaters. A life jacket can provide time for rescue.

•Know your swimming ability.

 ◦ Swimming in open water is more difficult than in a swimming pool because a swimmer can tire more quickly and get into trouble.
◦ Conditions can change quickly in open water.
◦ Swim in designated areas and wear a life jacket. A life jacket will help conserve energy and provide flotation.

Be a “Water Watcher.”

o When on or near the water watch your children.
o A child can drown in 20 seconds
o Drowning happens quickly and quietly. A drowning victim’s head will be back, they will be gasping for air, they will not be yelling, and their arms will be slapping the water as though trying to climb out of the water.

•Avoid exhaust fumes around boats.

o Carbon monoxide, an invisible killer, can accumulate anywhere in or around boats regardless of what type of boat. Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors on and inside your boat. Maintain a fresh circulation of air through and around your boat at all times.
o Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include eye irritation, headache, nausea, weakness and dizziness. Know the signs and stay alive.
o Avoid areas around boats where exhaust fumes may be present. Do not let friends swim under or around the boarding platform where fumes can accumulate.

Historic Vessels

    Lost Coast Survey Vessel Identified........

On June 21, 1860, the steamer Robert J. Walker was lost in a violent collision at sea.  The Walker was serving in the U.S. Coast Survey, a predecessor agency of NOAA, as a survey ship.  She charted the Gulf Coast, Mobile Bay and the Florida Keys.  She also participated in the early plotting of the Gulf Stream along the Atlantic Coast.  The Walker was struck by a commercial vessel off the New Jersey coast.  The vessel was discovered by a commercial fisherman in the 1970s, but her identity was not confirmed until this past June........

River Water May Be Diverted To Help Lake........

Officials in the Twin Cities are considering a plan to divert water from the Mississippi River, as a possible solution to plunging water levels in White Bear Lake.  Over the past decade, the Lake has lost nearly a fourth of it's volume.  The main issue is not how to get the water from the river to the lake, but who will fund the project.  White Bear Lake is not the only body of water decreasing in size, but it is the largest........

Bill,

I was out today and just south of Grafton, when I stopped and talked with these 2 boys floating on a raft. They are from Germany, recently graduated high school, and are rafting from Quincy to Cape Girardeau.

They left Quincy a week ago and expect to take another week to reach Cape Girardeau. Very pleasant young men who said everyone they have met along the way have been nice to them. I gave them your website and told them when they stay on land at night, if they have internet access, to look for their picture. Hope to see it on the site.

US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard reminds boaters, swimmers to remember safety this holiday weekend

CLEVELAND — Following a number of swimming and boating accidents on the Great Lakes over the last several weeks, the Coast Guard is urging those who plan to recreate on the Great Lakes during Labor Day weekend, or at any other time, to take appropriate safety precautions.

Labor Day weekend marks the end of the traditional beach and boating seasons on the Great Lakes, and is usually one of the busiest for the Coast Guard.

During the month of August, the Coast Guard's 9th District conducted search-and-rescue cases in Lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior and other navigable waterways within the Great Lakes region, like the St. Marys River, which highlighted the importance of proper preparation and boaters looking out for one another.

"Accidents happen fast and unexpectedly on the water," said Michael Baron, Coast Guard 9th District Recreational Boating and Water Safety Program manager. "Individuals looking to celebrate the traditional end of summer on the Great Lakes mustn't let their guard down. Everyone needs to be conscientious and practice personal safety so that their celebration doesn't turn into a tragedy."

"Whatever the activity, keep an eye on the weather and water conditions," Baron said. "Avoid using alcohol and wear your life jacket when boating."

Alcohol plays a major role in boating accidents and fatalities. As of Aug. 28, 2013, the Coast Guard has issued 122 boating under the influence citations, 40 of which were federal tickets.

The Coast Guard encourages swimmers and boaters to always check the current and forecasted marine weather before heading to the water. Even on seemingly nice days, waves and underwater currents may be more than the average swimmer or boater can handle. Marine forecasts can be found on the National Weather Service's website.

The following are additional safety tips all boaters should abide by:

  • Wear a life jacket at all times — The law states you must have a life jacket for every person on board, but the Coast Guard suggests you go one step further and wear your life jacket at all times when boating. It is much more difficult to locate, access, or don a life jacket at the moment the accident occurs. More information about life jackets can be found on the Coast Guard's Boating Safety Resource Center website.

  • File a float plan and leave it with someone who is not recreating on the water — A float plan is a lifesaving device on paper and can assist emergency responders with locating a distressed mariner. More information, as well as a downloadable float plan can be found on the Float Plan Central website.

  • Have a marine band radio and visual distress signals — While many boaters rely on cell phones for emergency communications on the water, VHF-FM radios are much more reliable in the marine environment and work in areas where cell phones sometimes don’t.  When a mayday is broadcast over channel FM Channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency, multiple response agencies, and other nearby boaters can hear the distress call and offer immediate assistance.  Additionally, in accordance with federal law, recreational boats 16 feet and longer are required to carry visual distress signals such as flares, smoke signals or non-pyrotechnic devices, and vessels 12 meters or longer are required to carry sound-producing devices such as whistles, bells and gongs. State and local laws may require further safety equipment.

  • Have a registered 406MHz emergency position indicating radio beacon — When a 406MHz EPIRB signal is received, search-and-rescue personnel can retrieve information from a registration database. This includes the beacon owner's contact information, emergency contact information, and vessel/aircraft identifying characteristics. Having this information allows the Coast Guard, or other rescue personnel, to respond appropriately.

  • Have a personal locator beacon — A PLB is a compact device that is clipped to a boater, normally on the life jacket he or she is wearing.  Once activated in a distress situation, the PLB transmits a 406 MHz signal to the International Cospas-Sarsat Satellite System, which provides distress alert and location data for search and rescue operations around the world.

  • DO NOT boat under the influence of alcohol — Alcohol affects judgment, vision, balance and coordination. Factor in boat motion, vibration, engine noise, sun, wind and spray and a drinker's impairment is accelerated

Hi! Wasn't it a beautiful weekend?! 3 boats and about 20 of us RiverRats decides to leave pool 26 this weekend. We did a "half-back" trip though 2 locks to Louisiana, MO. The river is smooth up North and there's lots of beaches. We had a great time, but are happy to be home sweet home!

Little John's Motorsports....

Hi Bill,

The Little John's Motorsports drag boat team was in Livermore, Kentucky racing on the Green River this past weekend. Driver John Morris posted excellent times in this KDBA / Lucas Oil Division III race dialing-in to within 0.005 seconds of a perfect reaction time and even followed that up with a 0.007 second green light. The Kwitchabitchin boat was performing great as well and the team qualified at 2nd position with a 9.02 sec E/T out of 11 Top Eliminator boats. It was in Sunday's elimination bracket rounds that John was near perfect on his reaction time at the start line but unfortunately it was 0.005 seconds too soon so he went out in round 1. This is a sport that is determined by thousandths of a second and therefore at almost every race the coordinators offer a "2nd chance" to the boats that got beat in the first round. Not wanting to pack it up and head home defeated, the team upped the ante for the opportunity to continue racing in the 2nd Chance Class. And it sure paid off! John went on to successfully race 4 more rounds and won the 2nd Chance! This first victory for John is a testament to hard work and perseverance of the entire team. The guys now have a confidence boost and are super excited for the next race over Labor Day weekend, August 30 - September 1 as the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series returns to Wheatland, Missouri. This show of intense speed features Top Fuel Hydros that race in excess of 250 MPH! The power you feel from these boats is indescribable and definitely worth the ride to Wheatland. Come see Little John's Kwitchabitchin team in the pits if you attend this event. Admission also includes dirt track racing at the same Lucas Oil complex Saturday evening with the Lucas Oil MLRA Dirt Late Model Fall Shootout along with the Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds. Good luck team!

We Wrap Up Our Bahamas Trip In Luxury

When we entered the anchorage at Big Majors Spot, there was a good number of boats at anchor there, and the Staniel Cay Yacht Club was turning customers away. One week later, we were alone at anchor at the yacht club was nearly empty. School has evidently started.

On one of our shopping trips into Staniel Cay, we took our books with us. We inquired at the “bakery” about getting the key to the library, went over to unlock the door to what looked to be the oldest building in Staniel Cay, and found a treasure of books inside. There was no electricity, but the light from the open door revealed shelf after shelf of paperbacks and hardcover books, all in alphabetical order according to author. We brought in seven books and placed them in a conspicuous spot with a tag attached to the attention of “Donnie”, and older gentleman we had met on the previous day who was anxious to get some new reading material, as he claimed to have read everything in the library already. We selected five fine books, left a donation in an old cigar box sitting on a desk, (with some cash already in it) locked the place up and returned the key to the nice woman at the bakery. The library was the finest treasure we had found in Staniel Cay.

     Clinton Receiving Grant For Fireboat........

First Responders in the Quad Cities region will soon be better prepared to react to problems along the Mississippi River, thanks to a $450,000 federal grant.  Clinton's current fire/rescue vessel has been in service for nearly ten years, however, it's effectiveness has been limited by the boat's size.  The old fire/rescue boat is capable pumping 250 gallons of water per minute, but the new boat will be able to pump up to 2,000 gallons per minute........
