Along The Mississippi

Bill,

Ran into a young lady at Cedar Hill paddling down the Mississippi from the head waters to the Gulf. Saturday morning she was leaving from about the 240 mm just below the Winfield Dam. She is paddling an red inflatable/raft type vessel with Along the Mississippi on the side. She said she is writing a book and filming her four month adventure. She is taking her time but I do not know how far she plans to go in a day. You can view her trip so far at alongthemississippi.net So if you're interested in interviewing her for RiverBills, send the crew out to look for her.

Missouri State Highway Patrol

     Flooding Endangers Missouri Boaters

The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to emphasize the dangers recent flooding in Central Missouri pose to boaters using Missouri's waterways. Large amounts of debris, including trees, have been forced off the shoreline by rising waters, presenting a unique danger to boaters. Floating debris may damage watercraft and injure swimmers. In addition, the rising lake levels, especially on Lake of the Ozarks, have dislodged numerous buoys from their permitted position. Boaters should watch for these displaced buoys, which may now be floating or positioned in the middle of the lake. The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind boaters to be especially cautious, to be mindful of the floating debris, and to operate their watercraft with the highest degree of care.

In case of an emergency, motorists may contact the Patrol by calling 1-800-525-5555 or, on a cellular phone, dialing *55. The Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint and everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. The 554 coot cruise ship known as the Pacific Princess on the 1970s television show "The Love Boat" will soon be making another run, to a ship breaking yard along Turkey's Aegean coast.  Known as the MS Pacific in real life, the 13,500 ton ship will be dismantled for her parts and metal.  The vessel had been modified several times over her life, and has been decommissioned several times.  Refitting the vessel would be too costly........

Conservation agents help kids discover finer points

of frogging during free clinic

St. Charles, Mo — Florida orange growers could never imagine the cause for which the fruits of their labors were being sacrificed on a warm July evening in St. Charles County — to teach kids how to spear frogs.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) held a Discover Nature Youth Frog Gigging Clinic July 8 at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area. A total of 16 boys and girls participated, ranging in ages from 11-15. They gigged a total 74 frogs and every kid who took part managed to bag at least one.

“The clinic was a huge success,” proclaimed Lincoln County Conservation Agent Kevin Eulinger. “Everyone gigged frogs and had a great time doing it.” Eulinger organized the event with the assistance of fellow conservation agents from around MDC’s St. Louis region.

“Many of the St. Louis Region agents and I have a personal interest in frog gigging,” Eulinger said, “and I wanted to share our interest with young kids, who probably would not get the opportunity to learn how to frog gig anywhere else.”

The clinic was free and began with classroom instruction covering Missouri Wildlife Code regulations governing frog hunting, as well as how to positively identify the creatures.

Next, the kids were given an introduction on frog gigging gear and techniques.

In order to hone their skills, each kid had a chance to “gig” oranges outside for practice until they perfected their technique. Leaving a grassy field smelling of freshly-squeezed orange juice, they next watched a demonstration on how to properly skin out a frog and prepare it for cooking.

The kids were then treated to a light dinner courtesy of the Muddy Waters Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited, which included a sampling of fried frog legs, before they set out on the conservation area at sunset to gig their own.

The young frog giggers split into five groups—each guided by MDC conservation agents, staff and volunteers—and dispersed into the night, bound for several lakes on the Busch Area. They were accompanied by their parents and guardians, and were equipped with headlamps, gigs and bags supplied by the clinic.

For a few hours the beams of flashlights and headlamps pierced the darkness of the wildlife area to the careful sloshing sounds of first-time frog hunters as they waded along the lake banks. Now and again, the waters were broken by plunging gigs that were often lifted up with a bullfrog on their tips.

“The most memorable part was the excitement the kids showed after they gigged their first frog,” said Eulinger. “Another cool part was seeing the parents getting excited about helping their kids catch and clean frogs.”

A number of the young frog hunters were able to get their limit of eight frogs. The guides helped all the kids clean the frogs at the end of the event and they got to take home their harvested frogs.

“I hope this experience helped the kids discover what a really cool part of nature frog gigging is, and will stimulate them to go on their own in the future,” said Eulinger.

Sponsors of the clinic included the Cuivre River Wildlife Management Association, Whitetails Unlimited, the American Rod and Gun Club, and Bass Pro Shops.

Frogging season opened officially in Missouri on June 30, and runs until Oct. 31. Both bullfrogs and green frogs are legal game. The daily limit is eight frogs, with a total possession limit of 16. They may be taken with either a valid hunting or fishing permit by a variety of methods. More details about frog hunting can be found at http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/regulations/non-game-species/frogs.

Power Cut Causes Wastewater Spill Into River........

Wednesday afternoon, around 3.5 million gallons of untreated wastewater was released into the Mississippi River after a power outage at the St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District's Bissell Point water treatment plant in north St. Louis.  A little after Noon, two out of three power feeds failed, causing the discharge.  The plant requires at least two power feeds to operate, and one of the down feeds was restored just before two.  MSD officials are saying that there is a minimal health risk related to the spill........

Lake Of The Ozarks

     Lake Inundated With Water........

Early Wednesday morning, the Lake of the Ozarks was inundated with 7 inches of rain in six hours, rapidly sending the level of the lake up very quickly.  At the height of the storm, water flowing into the lake reached 90,000 cubic feet per second.  Concerns have arisen over the amount of water not only on the lake, but below the Bagnell Dam in the Osage River.  High water in the lake threatens homes and docks, while the release of water from the dam into the swollen Osage River is threatening homes, campers and farmers........

     Bagnell Dam Floodgates Opened........

At 11 am Wednesday, the operators of the Bagnell Dam opened 11 floodgates on account of heavy rain.  The Osage River is expected to rise three feet, dependent upon rainfall and water flow.  Originally, Amren had planned to open the floodgates at 7:30 am, but put off the action because of emergency responders conducting rescue operations downstream.  Currently, water is flowing into the Osage River at a rate of 47,000 cubic feet per second........

Missouri State Highway Patrol Reminds Public About Flooding Dangers

News Alert

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to remind the public that flooding continues to affect safety on both the waterways and roadways. Flooding, due to the recent heavy rains, has proven to be extremely dangerous and even fatal.

Recent storms have created flooding issues in many areas of the state. Many of the roads across the state which are near or crossover waterways are still under water and should be considered impassable and extremely dangerous to cross.

For their safety and that of their passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT -- it is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them.

Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

The Patrol also asks boaters across the state to take extra precautions when boating in flooded areas. Many areas of Missouri have experienced large amounts of rainfall over the last week causing rivers and lakes to become swollen. Many times the right decision is to stay off the water.

In areas where lakes or rivers have spilled over the banks, erosion and damage can occur to flooded structures, docks, or water laden levees by boat wakes. Boaters should avoid operating in these areas. If operation in these areas is necessary, boaters should operate at idle speed so as not to cause a wake.

Flooded rivers and streams with moving currents present some of the most dangerous situations a boater can encounter. Fast moving water can easily capsize or flip a boat, especially when combined with fixed objects such as trees and buildings. Boaters should avoid any operations in these swift flowing waters.

Many lakes and rivers across the state have only seen routine increases in water levels. It is for the safety of the public and to minimize damage to property that the Highway Patrol requests boaters avoid waterways that have been impacted by the most severe flooding.

Dear old Wed.Hump Day. Having to go to work early, so never get to post in the am. Won't be long until I can be lazy and hang out in the morn. Another nice day on the river, would be nice if the weather people could get the forecast correct. We have a local boat sales/repair shop that ramps their boats at our harbor.Today is the 2nd time we have had to go and pull them in. I told them they needed a better mechanic. See if pays to have your boat repaired at John's, as we can test drive it before you pick it up, and you won't have to be towed in. Think about it. Have a great evening.

Bill,

On 7/27/2013, 24 members of the St Louis Canoe & Kayak Club set forth from the Piasa Creek boat ramp for an evening trip down the Mississippi. It was a beautiful evening for a paddle with bright stars and a couple meteors. The Clark bridge was absolutely gorgeous. If you look closely, you'll see the silhouette of a fellow kayaker against the water.

Missouri Flooding Outlook

     Wet August Raises Flooding Concerns........

National Weather Service hydrologist, Mark Fuchs is saying that the wet August may end up being wetter across Missouri, bringing about more worries about flooding.  Fuchs stated that for the next week or so, an unstable weather pattern is expected to remain in place, possibly causing Missouri creeks and rivers to overflow their banks.  Fuchs added that the Missouri River could rise as much as 15 feet across eastern and central Missouri........

   Annual Perseids Meteorite Shower

Hey Riverbill,

I thought our fellow boaters would like to know that this weekend, Aug 9-12th, the annual Perseids Meteorite shower will be in full swing! The projected numbers could be up to 60-80 shooting stars an hour. This year, with the moon light out the way in the early evening, some scientist say conditions are conducive for a potential burst of up to 1000 an hour. Look to sky's this weekend!! See you on the river.

US Army Corps of Engineers

Chicago District protects, restores natural treasures through GLRI and GLFER

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District manages an extensive ecosystem restoration program that restores and protects over 2,600 acres of streams, lakes and wetlands and opens up over 58 miles of free-flowing river. Completed projects and those currently in construction provide essential habitat for fish and wildlife, and extensive value to the public.

Ecosystem restoration efforts encompass a comprehensive examination of problems contributing to system degradation and the development of plans for their restoration.

The district is currently working on four projects that will protect and restore an additional 90 acres of habitat. These projects may be awarded for construction during Fiscal Year 2013.

Twenty studies are also underway, which will add additional habitat, if implemented. The studies are authorized by different authorities within the Energy and Water Appropriations Act or the Water Resources and Development Act, such as the Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration (GLFER) program; they are federally funded primarily through the Corps' Energy and Water (E&W) appropriations or through U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) appropriations.

The goal of GLFER is to plan, design and construct projects that restore the fishery, ecosystem and beneficial uses of the Great Lakes to include removing a variety of invasive species, restoring rare dune and swale habitat, increasing species richness of numerous habitat types, removing unnecessary barriers in Great Lakes tributaries, creating fish-passage facilities and providing migratory bird resting and feeding areas.

Red Mill Pond was the first project authorized through GLFER and has been widely recognized as a success story for the program. The project team was recognized with the USEPA and Chicago Wilderness 2012 Conservation and Native Landscaping Award and the Daniel Flaherty Park Excellence Award for innovation, cost-effective design, the use of community input and resources and providing a significant impact on the community.
