 From Wikipedia.com:

"According to the Illinois Department of Conservation, in 1937 two commercial fishermen from Alton, Herbert Cope and Dudge Collins, caught a bull shark in the Mississippi River. Late that summer they had realized something was troubling their wood and mesh traps. Concluding that it was a fish, they built a strong wire trap and baited it with chicken guts. The next morning, they caught the 5-foot 84-pound shark, which they displayed in the Calhoun Fish Market, where it attracted crowds for days."

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Decision Time

Rosie and I were definitely disappointed in Rum Cay and Port Nelson, and certainly in Sumner Point Marina. We had traveled over 35 miles in rough seas, believing the guidebooks about everything that Rum Cay had to offer. What if we traveled another 35 miles to Cockburn in San Salvador, only to be disappointed again? There is no anchorages around San Salvador unless the wind is coming from the east, which it usually is, but there are no guarantees. When we travel to any island, I usually have anchorages in mind for any weather situation, because you never know.

At issue was also the current wind situation. Winds were continuing from the east, which would put us on a beam sea heading to San Salvador, something that is not pleasant at all. We made a decision to head back to Long Island at the crack of dawn, and take advantage of a following sea to scoot us along. Our decision was a fortuitous one.

At 6 A.M. on Monday morning Rosie had the coffee going and I was untying our lines. The sun was just coming over the horizon as we made our way through the maze of coral heads back out to our route west to Cape Santa Maria.

We hadn't had much experience with a following sea since we began our adventure, and what we soon learned was that unless one wanted to fight the helm all day, the boat will do better if it is going faster than the waves, otherwise the waves overtake the vessel, pushing the stern around as they gain purchase on the rudders. As the stern tries to come around, one can steer "into the skid" as one does when sliding on ice. Real havoc occurs when a vessel is running in a surf into an inlet and the waves push the vessel sideways. In a big enough surf, this is when the boat will broach and possibly roll over. The seas we were in were not big enough to roll us over, but I quickly tired of fighting the wheel. This is where autopilot comes in handy.

But we don't have autopilot, but we do have horsepower, so I put Swing Set on plane and we ran along with the waves, gently coasting over them with no spray on us at all. Until the temperature alarm on the port engine sounded.

I really wasn't taken by surprise because when we are running at our cruising speed of 25 miles per hour, I always have a close eye on the temperature gauges. I had replaced the raw water pump on the starboard engine and we were on borrowed time with the impeller on the port engine and now payment was due. I slowed us down to 1500 RPMs, not a very efficient speed, but the added miles per hour gave me better steering, but still not enough to stay ahead of the waves coming at our stern quarter. So I fought the wheel for three hours back to Long Island until we rounded the tip of the island and happily found ourselves back in Calabash Bay and Cape Santa Maria Resort.

Every Little Thing
Last week was a week of sorting out all the unfinished details. The time was
needed and well used, decisions have been made and a plan has emerged.
With time slipping away (boating season) Suzanne and I have decided that we
will run the gauge panels that we have for now and revisit this issue in the fall
or in the off season. Dennis and I are on a mission for upper drive gears. My
job is to clean and paint the gimbal housings, as well as the bell housings and
steering forks. Once done we will be reassembling drives and doing final cleaning
add some touch up paint at the waterline and we should then be making preparations
to go to the water. ( Sounds easy ? ) ( ha-ha)

In the meantime I still have a list of every little thing that you can imagine.

It all ranges from carpet cleaning to test running the engines. With a whole lot
of little things in between.

So here we go to the home stretch and to the wire, hang on friends it's going to be close.

Wow, got a little carried away didn't I ? I suppose that this whole project has become
something of a very long car ride and now we're in that slap happy state that we find
ourselves in at the end of the trip. That is pretty much my condition now.

Corps of Engineers to host education meetings on Westport Island Reach improvements

St. Louis – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District will host two meetings to describe improvements planned for the Westport Island Reach of the Mississippi River.

The reach is just east of Elsberry, Missouri and west of Hardin, Illinois. In the interest of convenience to residents and businesses in the area, meetings are planned for both sides of the river.

The first meeting is Tuesday, July 23, at the American Legion Post in Elsberry, Mo. The second meeting is Thursday, July 25, 2013 in Hardin, Ill. in the City Hall. Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m., and will include presentations from engineers and project managers to explain the reasons for the work and expected results.

The proposed work includes construction on ten new river training structures, eight of them submerged along the Illinois and Missouri banks of the river. The river training structures are needed for navigation channel alignment; reducing mechanical dredging requirements, while avoiding negative impact on the existing side channels or surrounding habitats. Engineers in coordination with environmental and navigation partners have considered 35 design alternatives to meet these criteria, and have agreed on the plan that will be presented at the meetings. The work would be completed in phases beginning in fiscal year 2014 through fiscal year 2018.

This work was initially coordinated with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, River Industry Action Committee, and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Coordination with the various organizations will continue until completion of the study, and while plans are developed and finalized.

After the public education meetings, the presentations will be available on line at: http://mvs-wc.mvs.usace.army.mil/arec/Projects.htmll

News Release From BoatUS

Docks with Bad Wiring Continue to Prove Deadly

New Electric Shock Drowning Resource Center at BoatUS.com
"Tragic Deaths Were Preventable" - What You Need To Know

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 17, 2013 – Last year over Fourth of July weekend, Alexandra Anderson, 13, and her brother, Brayden Anderson, eight, were swimming near a homeowner’s dock on the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri when they started to scream. By the time the siblings were pulled from the lake, they were unresponsive and a short while later were pronounced dead. Two hours later on Cherokee Lake in Tennessee, 10-year-old Noah Winstead, died in a similar manner, while Noah's friend, 11-year-old Nate Parker Lynam, passed away the following evening. These were not drowning victims. In all four of these cases, 120-volt AC (alternating current) leakage from nearby boats or docks electrocuted or incapacitated swimmers in freshwater. This little-known and often-unidentified killer is called Electric Shock Drowning or ESD.

“Every one of these deaths was preventable,” said Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) Director of Technical Services Beth Leonard. “Any boater and every adult who swims in a freshwater lake needs to understand how ESD happens, how to stop it from happening, and what to do — and not to do — if they ever have to help a victim.” To help them with this vital task, BoatUS has put together a new online Electric Shock Drowning Resource Center to educate and inform the public about ESD at BoatUS.com/seaworthy/ESD.asp, and offers helpful tips below.

“An effort to increase safety standards on marina docks has been underway for several years now, but few resources have been available for the general public,” said Leonard. “ESD is a complicated subject, and what information has been available for boaters, private dock owners, and swimmers has, all too often, been inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. Our Electric Shock Drowning Resource Center addresses this problem with a range of helpful articles and presentations, all of which have been vetted for technical accuracy. We’ll continue to add to and update this material to ensure it remains a valuable source of information,” she added.

So what should boat owners, private dock owners, and swimmers do to prevent ESD?

Crews Recovered Tow Vessel That Went Over Dam........

Two weeks ago, a towboat capsized after going over Lock and Dam No.7, claiming the life of one of the three crewmembers.  On Wednesday, workers recovered the four level towboat, the Megan McB.  The vessel was relocated out of the main channel, righted and raised, prior to being towed to a LaCrosse, Wisconsin shipyard.  The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating what caused the Megan McB to go over the dam's roller gate........

Mississippi River At New Orleans, Louisiana

     Levee Sinking, Prompting Repairs........

A New Orleans levee has sunk enough that it will not protect against a storm surge from a 100 year hurricane.  This is prompting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to spend $1.3 million to raise close to 4,000 feet if earthen levee.  The Corps had expected the levee to settle rather quickly, and the repairs are expected to last between 5 and 10 years.  Once that time has passed, the levee may need to be raised again........

Levee Break Exercise Labeled A Success........

Officials with the Madison County Emergency Management Agency stated that they were pleased with Tuesday's drill.  The drill was intended to prepare crews for the possibility of a levee breach.  The parameters for the drill were based on a set of circumstanced that are not likely to occur at the same time: heavy spring rains, saturated ground, record high water and additional rain in the forecast.  The focus of the exercise was to put flood monitoring equipment to the test........

  Mississippi River Near Quincy, Illinois

     Tuesday Was Levee Breach Anniversary........

On Tuesday, July 16, 1993, the West Quincy Levee broke, allowing flood waters to inundate the Fabius Drainage District.  Several barges were pulled through the hole in the levee, one sank, and another collided with a gas station, causing an oil slick and a fire.  The levee breach was a shock, as the Mississippi River had crested in the region three days prior, and was on the way down.  Jimmy Scott had been arrested, and later convicted of moving sandbags, and causing the levee breach.  He is serving a life sentence........

Boating Safety

    Prepare Your Boat For Safety........

Boating is a favorite pastime for many people, but it carries a potential for danger.  According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 500 deaths associated with watercraft accidents during 2012, and the leading cause of death was drowning.  Michael Dade, with the Quincy Fire Department, stated that preparing your boat with the proper safety gear, knowing how to navigate the vessel, and the body of water it is on is a must........
