Hi, Bill.

I hope you had a great fathers day! I did. We were out again Sunday after several of us had a delicious lunch at the Boathouse (love that burger). We took another slow ride, this time up past Two Branch island. On the way back we saw the Metlife blimp, so KC took this shot while it was directly overhead the Y2Katy. That's me and Katy at the Boathouse. She was born ON Fathers day 23 years ago. My best present ever (Thanks Mary for holding out that extra three weeks!)

See ya on the river!

UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER/ILLINOIS WATERWAY - SAFETY ZONE - UPDATE

Zone 28 (Mile 185.4 – Mile 109.9). A Safety Zone has been established in St. Louis Harbor between Mile 184.0 and 179.0. Southbound tows greater than 600 feet in length, excluding the towboat, should limit their transit to daylight hours and should have a minimum of 250-horsepower for each loaded barge. Northbound tows must have enough horsepower to maintain a speed of 3-mph, while transiting through all St. Louis Harbor Bridges. All towing vessels are prohibited from carrying barges on the hip. Assess bridge clearance well in advance, pre-identify lay-up areas in the event of a river closure. The COTP recommends that towing vessels have a pilot onboard with experience in high water, similar size tows and all St. Louis Bridges. Recreational traffic is prohibited from transiting within this zone. Towboat operators should be experienced in high water operations and should proceed at their slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in order to minimize wake damage. Towboats are prohibited from laying up on levees. For additional information, please see the Local Notice To Mariners below:

A joke with a catfish nearly turned deadly for a 13 year old boy.  Aiden Menchaca was fishing near Maumelle, Arkansas, when his mother, Melissa Menchaca began goofing around with a catfish near the boy.  She stated she wanted to give him a kiss, when the fish began wriggling about and struck the boy.  He ended up with a catfish spine in the neck, mere centimeters from a bulging artery........

Benefit for the Blessing of the Fleet this Saturday at Grafton Harbor raffle rules:
The "Rubber Duck Plunge" explained. well, sort of, anyway, here goes. When you buy a chance in the Rubber Duck Plunge you will be given a wristband. Out of all the rubber ducks a number of them equal to the number of prizes will be given a number ranking them as 1 thru whatever (the ducks already have numbers). The total number of rubber ducks thrown into the pool will equal the number of chances taken. You can buy as many chances as you want at $10 per chance and will be given a wrist band for each one. When the time comes everyone will be asked to get out of the pool. At that time all of the rubber ducks will be thrown in and then the signal will be given for everyone with a wrist band, or their designated "Duck Plucker" will jump into the pool and grab a duck for each entry they have. Once all the ducks have been claimed the winning numbers will be called and the winners can come up and claim their prize. Simple enough right? Organized chaos? Right again! Much more fun than looking at numbers on a paper ticket (we hope).

Missouri Swimming Beaches

  HIGH WATER SALE
Unfortunately, it appears we won’t be getting that dry spring that was anticipated. Instead, we have received more rain than we need. This has put a damper on an early season boating, but there is a “silver lining” to this delay.

During this high water, Bloch Marine Service remains operational at its Polestar Marina and Yacht Club of Saint Louis locations, and continues to have service capabilities at our Harbor Point location and other marinas such as Alton Marina and Grafton Harbor. In an effort to save you precious boating time when the water goes down, and to save you money, Bloch Marine is offering “high water” discounts as follows

- If it if feasible to get to your boat, and a pullout is required for the work you request, the pullout portion of your service bill will be at no charge. This includes a credit of $6.00/per foot on our bottom paint special package. (Boats weighing 30 tons or less/fiberglass and aluminum only.)

- We will also apply a 10% discount to labor (excluding bottom paint special labor).

These discounts will apply if the work is ordered by you when the water level at the Grafton gauge is above 22.0 feet during this current high water event.

We know the high water is discouraging, but it won’t last forever, and this is an opportunity for you to take advantage of an otherwise unfortunate situation.

Give us a call today and schedule that work you have been putting off, and you can save on downtime and money!

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Canoeists, kayakers, floaters and others can discover Missouri rivers and streams with the help of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) revised Paddler’s Guide to Missouri. The $8 Paddler’s Guide features 58 Missouri rivers and streams to canoe and kayak.

One of the Department’s all-time bestselling books since its initial release in 1965, this publication has been Missouri’s go-to paddling resource ever since. Originally researched and written by Oz Hawksley, today, this greatly expanded reference book includes not only updated maps and details of Missouri’s more popular Ozark streams, but also lesser-known streams and tributaries throughout the state.

Detailed sections include northern streams, the Missouri River, and more floats from all corners of the state. Each waterway includes easy-to-read maps, descriptions of access points, camping, state parks, and conservation areas along the way.

The 9- by 11-inch book includes gorgeous color photos and has a lay-flat spiral binding. Put the book in a sealable clear bag and see the river map in its entirety without having to flip pages while on the river.

Missouri Department of natural Resources

    News Release

Five state park beaches temporarily closed for water quality issues

Jefferson City, Mo. - Five state park swimming beaches have temporarily closed for water quality issues, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

The state park beaches at Harry S Truman located in Warsaw, Lake of the Ozarks’ Grand Glaize beach located in Osage Beach, Pomme de Terre’s Pittsburg beach located in Pittsburg, St. Joe’s Monsanto Lake beach located in Park Hills and Wakonda located in La Grange are closed following results of water samples taken Monday that indicated bacteria levels higher than those recommended for waters used for swimming. Once tests from the public beaches indicate the bacteria levels are within the standard suitable for swimming, the beaches will reopen. The swimming beach at Mark Twain remains closed due to flooding conditions.

Harry S Truman, Lake of the Ozarks, Pomme de Terre and St. Joe state parks have a second designated swimming beach that remains open to the public. Visitors to Harry S Truman state park may stop by the office or fee booth to obtain a pass free of charge to swim at the campground beach. Visitors may also enjoy the beaches at Lake of the Ozarks’ Public Beach #1, Pomme de Terre’s Hermitage Beach, and St. Joe’s Pim Lake beach.

The department collects water samples from all designated beaches in the state park system weekly during the recreational season to determine suitability for swimming. Beaches will be closed for high bacteria when a single E. coli sample exceeds 235 cfu/100ml or when the geometric mean – a 30-day rolling average – exceeds 126 cfu/100 ml. The sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located.

The department will post the information about the beach status on the website at dnr.mo.gov as well as mostateparks.com. Visitors to Missouri State Parks are able to sign up to receive free electronic notices about the status of state park beaches while visiting the department’s beach status website.

Missouri's state parks and historic sites offer something to suit everyone's taste - outdoor adventure, great scenery and a bit of history. With Missouri's 87 state parks and historic sites, the possibilities are boundless. For more information about Missouri state parks and historic sites and swimming beaches, visit mostateparks.com.

Wood Beam May Be Part Of Shipwreck........

Twelve years ago, shipwreck hunter Steve Libert discovered a ten and a half foot wooden beam extending from the bed of Lake Michigan, in an area he believed was the final resting place of the Griffin.  This vessel was a 17th century French ship, commanded by Rene Robert Cavelier de la Salle.  This week, French scientists examined the beam, concluding that it seems to be a bowspirit, several hundreds of years old.  Workers have been digging near the beam, where sonar reading indicated an object over 40 feet long........

Missouri Department od Natural Resources

Funding available to improve water quality

Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications to fund projects that will protect Missouri’s waters from pollution caused by stormwater runoff.

Pollution caused by stormwater runoff, referred to technically as nonpoint source pollution, occurs when pollution is released from multiple indeterminate locations making the sources difficult to identify and control. Eligible projects will protect or restore waters impaired by nonpoint sources and provide pollutant load-reducing practices.

Educational institutions, local governments, and not-for-profit organizations are eligible to apply and award amounts will vary.

Also sought are innovative nonpoint source stormwater control practices and projects located within the Our Missouri Waters Initiative watersheds: Lower Grand River, Big River and Spring River. Research and regulatory enforcement related projects are not eligible.

Applications are due to the department July 30.

Funding for the program comes from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Additional information is available online at dnr.mo.gov/env/wpp/nps/319nps-proj-req.htm. To request an application packet, contact the department’s Water Protection Program at 800-361-4827 or 573-751-7428.

Calhoun Ferry Company
June 13

I have not posted any information lately because there is not much to tell. There is some good news, the river is dropping again. Now we start all over again with the slow fall. For now both the Golden Eagle and Winfield Ferry remain closed.

John's Boat Harbor
Wednesday

Sue and I drove to the river in our red jeep. We went around Silver Road (off salt river road) no water at all, enter HW C at
Dr Dillards place, no water, first blue wing to 2nd blue wing, spotty water, nothing deep. 2nd blue wing to HW C, some hw showing, and some hw with water. Nothing deep, can see the yellow line. Hw B to r.r tracks. solid water, not really deep, can see the yellow line if you look really hard. On the other side of rr track, no water. just in the fields. Could be better, trucks fine, low slung cars, probably need to wait a day. On the way back home we drove straight down Hw C, In front of (I aint scared)
solid water, not really deep, but looks deep. His mail box is gone, so can't judge the water by that. Tomorrow will be much better, reading today was 29.04- tomorrow 28.5 so all the water may be gone by tomorrow. Think positive.

Kinder's Restaurant
The weather is beautiful, the water is still a little too high, and the Golden Eagle Ferry is closed, so we have decided to open this weekend...we are tired of waiting around! We will open Friday at 4, our kitchen hours are 4 pm-9pm, Saturday 11am-9pm, and Sunday 11am-8pm. Hope to see you all there!

Bill, I heard yesterday that Steve Minor (former owner with wife Pat) of the Lighthouse Resturant at Two Rivers Marina died from a massive heart attack Saturday. Tuesday, a broken sewer valve allowed an unknown amount of untreated sewage to flow into the River Des Peres, about 3/4 mile from the Mississippi River.  The broken valve was located at one pumping station, while the discharge occurred at another pump station.  Repairs took about five hours to complete.  The Metropolitan Sewer District estimated that the total amount of wastewater spilled could be upwards of one million gallons........

  Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

Flooding Less Than Expected, Costs Less........

In Davenport, Iowa, the flooding along the Mississippi River was less than expected, and as a result, the flood fighting costs were less than expected.  Originally the flooding was rise to more than 17 feet,  above the flood stage of 15 feet.  The river actually crested at 16.35 feet.  Costs this time around were nearly $22,000.  The Mississippi River topped 19 feet back in April, and flood fight efforts ran over $287,000........

Boating In The Riverbend

Boating Dangerous Due To High Water........

Very warm temperatures are giving people a reason to get the boat onto local rivers, but concerns have arisen that the rivers are too high to be safe.  The Mississippi River in the Riverbend is usually around 15 feet, but it is now hovering around 27 feet deep.  The Meramec River is also running dangerously high.  In the past few weeks, two men disappeared into the waters of the Meramec River........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Come out and have your boating questions answered by members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-13. Whether you’re interested in safety issues, boat handling and docking, anchoring, radio usage or any other questions you may have; bring your questions and get knowledgeable answers!

TowBoatUS will also be on hand to answer questions about their services and BoatUS.

Don't forget to ask about Boating Safety Classes and Vessel Safety Checks offered by the Auxiliary while you're there.

To learn more about boater education, Vessel Safety Checks and other services provided by the Coast Guard Auxiliary – or if you are interested in learning how to become one of us – please visit us online at www.uscgauxflotilla3-13.org or contact us at msz@charter.net.

US Coast Guard News Release

Coast Guard reminds boaters the importance of life-saving equipment

MIAMI – The Coast Guard reminds boaters the importance of carrying life-saving communication and emergency distress equipment aboard their vessels.

While many boaters rely on cell phones for emergency communications on the water, VHF-FM radios are much more reliable in the marine environment and work in areas where cell phones sometimes don’t.  When a mayday is broadcast over channel FM Channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency, multiple response agencies and other nearby boaters can hear the distress call and offer immediate assistance.

The Coast Guard also highly recommends all mariners equip their boats with Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons and/or their life jackets with Personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons.

“EPIRBs and PEPIRBs are absolutely invaluable during emergencies because they instantly alert responders to your distress, provide a precise GPS location and give a description of your vessel when they’re properly registered,” said Capt. Todd Lutes, chief of incident management for the Seventh Coast Guard District. “If your boat capsizes or you fall overboard and can’t get to your radio, these small, relatively inexpensive pieces of equipment, along with your life jacket, can be the difference between living and dying.”

EPIRBs and PEPIRBs may be activated manually by the push of a button or automatically when they enter the water, depending on the model.

In 2012, registered EPIRBs and PEPIRBs were directly responsible for 67 lives saved in the Seventh Coast Guard District.Additionally, in accordance with federal law, recreational boats 16 feet and longer are required to carry visual distress signals such as flares, smoke signals or non-pyrotechnic devices, and vessels 12 meters or longer are required to carry sound-producing devices such as whistles, bells and gongs. State and local laws may require additional safety equipment.

Federal requirements can be found in the brochure A Boater’s Guide to the Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats

  Illinois Boating Legislation

Tougher Boating Laws May Be Coming........

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is considering signing a bill that would grant the authorities the right to suspend a boater's driver's license if they're caught boating under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  A first time offender that declines to take a sobriety test may lose their license for a year.  A first time offender that fails a sobriety test would only lose their license for six months.  The Governor only has until the end of July to sign the bill........

Missouri Department of Conservation

Frog Days of Summer Begin June 30th

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Celebrate summer with a favorite outdoor pastime for many Missourians -- frogging season. It begins at sunset on June 30 and ends Oct. 31.

Frogging can be practiced with either a fishing permit or a hunting permit. The Wildlife Code of Missouri allows those with a fishing permit to take frogs by hand, hand net, atlatl, gig, bow, trotline, throw line, limb line, bank line, jug line, snagging, snaring, grabbing or pole and line. With a hunting permit, frogs may be harvested using a .22-caliber or smaller rifle or pistol, pellet gun, atlatl, bow, crossbow, or by hand or hand net. The use of an artificial light is permitted when frogging.

Children under the age of 16 and Missouri residents over the age of 65 are not required to have a permit.

Missouri has two frog species that are legal game — bullfrog and green frog. Bullfrogs are larger and therefore more sought-after, but the legs of both species are delicious. The taste and texture of frog meat is similar to that of fresh-water fish.

The daily limit is eight frogs of both species combined. Catch eight frogs before midnight, and start frogging again at 12:01 a.m. to catch another day’s limit. However, it is not legal to possess more than one day’s limit while on the water and banks where daily limits apply. The possession limit allows you to store no more than 16 frogs at a time.

Once a frog is speared, it must be harvested. The Wildlife Code of Missouri prohibits the release of a speared frog as “wanton waste” because the animal is not likely to recover. Any frog taken into actual possession, unless immediately released unharmed after being caught, is included in the daily limit.

For more information on frogging, including methods, conservation areas to hunt them, recipes, and regulations, go online to mdc.mo.gov/node/15122

A 50 foot wide, 15 ton electromagnet is getting ready to take a 5 week long cruise.  The magnet was constructed by scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in suburban New York back in the 1990s.  The scientists do not need the magnet any longer, so it is being moved to the Fermi laboratory, where it will be used in new experiments.  The magnet will be loaded onto a barge, and shipped down the Atlantic coast, around Florida and up the Mississippi River........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

Great Guana Cay

As much as we liked the activity around Big Majors Spot, the fact that some people found the anchorage to be appealing to them for water skiing and wake boarding made us begin to consider moving on.
On Friday, Rosie finally went snorkeling. We took the dinghy over to The Grotto and tied to the mooring there just outside of the easiest cave entrance for access. Rosie was impressed with all the fish that she saw and only bumped her head once, and we went on a rising tide, not the best time to go.
Although we had been to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club for dinner, what we really wanted to do was go one last time and have beers and appetizers at the bar, so after our snorkeling trip and a brief nap, we got cleaned up, left Holly in charge of the boat, and headed over to the Yacht Club at around 5 P.M.
The highlight of our evening was when the two girls we met traveling on their 27 foot sailboat came in and joined us at the bar. I had gotten my facts wrong last time when I said they were traveling with Nick and his girlfriend, Hillary, but in fact, Nick and Hillary have their own boat, and so do Katie and Jessie.
Katie and Jessie came through our home port on the Mississippi, staying at Grafton Harbor and Harbor Point Yacht Clubs. They were really impressed with Grafton Harbor.
We traded stories about some of the same places we had all been to, and were surprised to find that they both worked for four months at The Cottage, a favorite bar of ours in Fort Meyers Beach, where they built up their finances to continue their trip.
You can find out all about Katie and Jessie on their website: katieandjessieonaboat.com
I also have a link to their site on this blog's home page.
We had a good time talking to some other folks too, but by the time 8 P.M. rolled around, we were ready to go back to the boat, and of course, to Holly.
I had been keeping tabs on the diesel fuel supply at Staniel Cay. They were getting low, and their price was reasonable at $5.35 per gallon, so I wanted to fill up before we continued on down the Exuma Island chain. I called them on the VHF and was told that they were out of gasoline, but they had some diesel. I told them we were on the way.
We filled up with diesel, and also bought water for 50 cents per gallon, which came to $30. Our water maker was working, but some windless day were coming up, and running the generator just to make water is not cost effective. There was some modification that I wanted to make to the plumbing on the watermaker, so having a full tank on hand in case I ran into problems seemed like a good thing to do.
We left the fuel dock and cruised by Tara, and Sweet Louise, the sailboats owned by Nick and Hillary, and Katie and Jessie. We let them know we were heading out. They said that they might see us on down the line and we don't doubt it. We've run into them at four different anchorages without planning it.

YesterYear's River Picture of the Day in 2012 ......... were sent to us by Capt'n Larry Demko who got into his land yacht with his wife Susan and took off from St. Louis on a "Gypsy Tour."

Bill:

While everyone on the river is preparing for the Blessing of the Fleet, Susan and I are on the 2nd leg of our "gypsy" tour.

While I'm certain it's not as adventurous as Mike and Rosie's trek (and definitely doesn't deserve a blog), we're spreading the "gospel of Riverbills" wherever we go!

For three weeks, beginning in late May and spilling over into early June, we spent some time boating on Tellico Lake and the Tennessee River around Knoxville. And old friend of ours has a 25 ft Cobalt on the Tennessee River so we've taken some sight-seeing "tours" and spent some great days on the water. ( I was going to describe the the boating as "delightful" but thought Mike Holaus might think my estrogen levels were too high!)

The pics here are during one of our days on Tellico Lake. We went past the Sea Ray plant in Vonore, TN and grabbed lunch at a waterfront restaurant. Then we stopped for gas at another marina/waterfront restaurant, The River Rock Grill.

In one pic, I appointed Chas McKweon, our boating host, as he official holder of our traveling Riverbills bumper sticker. I'm also in the pic along with Janette McKeown.

In the other pic, Susan and Janette are in the boat right before we fueled up (yes, they were out of the boat while we were fueling). Of course, we all wanted to hold the Riverbills sticker, but I "appointed" Susan to hold it. She said she feels closer to you & the River when the adhesive sticks to her fingers. I thought that was kinky.

We're now in St. James City, FL and our boating area is Pine Island Sound and the Gulf of Mexico. I'll send pics from time to time. (I'm sure you're looking forward to that! LOL )

We've eaten at Woody's Waterside -- the home of the buoy that resembles the famous, southern-most buoy located in Key West. I can walk there from my brother-in--law's house. (not to Key West, to Woody's!)

If we run into any St. Louisans, we'll mark the occasion with a pic or two.

I hope you have good weather for the Blessing the of the Fleet.

During the recent flooding along the Mississippi River, the historic Ruebel Hotel and Restaurant in Grafton remained open, despite encroaching floodwaters.  Originally built in 1879, the hotel caught fire in 1912, and was rebuild, and renovated in 1997.  During the flooding of 2008, the lower level was destroyed, forcing the owners, Mo and Karen Khamee to refurbish it again.  The Khamees are celebrating their fifth year of owning the establishment........

Illinois Boating Laws

     Harsher Penalties Possible For BWI........

Illinois lawmakers are considering harsher penalties for incidents that involve boat operators.  Earlier this spring, the General Assembly approved legislation that will allow the state to suspend, or revoke a person's drivers license if they are in a serious boating accident, and have been found to be operating a vessel under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  The tougher penalties would affect only those boaters involved in serious accidents.  However, smaller offences may result in the loss of boating privileges........
