Lake Superior Gives Up Old Shipwreck........

Close to 100 years ago, the freighter Henry B. Smith sank during a November storm.  A month ago, a group of shipwreck hunters found the wreck in 535 feet of water, off the shore of Marquette, Michigan.  The group has not seen the name of the vessel, but  she is sitting in a spilled load of iron ore, which indicates she is the Smith.  The Henry B. Smith disappeared with 25 souls aboard during the Great Lakes Storm of 1913........

  HIGH WATER SALE

Unfortunately, it appears we won’t be getting that dry spring that was anticipated. Instead, we have received more rain than we need. This has put a damper on an early season boating, but there is a “silver lining” to this delay.

During this high water, Bloch Marine Service remains operational at its Polestar Marina and Yacht Club of Saint Louis locations, and continues to have service capabilities at our Harbor Point location and other marinas such as Alton Marina and Grafton Harbor. In an effort to save you precious boating time when the water goes down, and to save you money, Bloch Marine is offering “high water” discounts as follows

- If it if feasible to get to your boat, and a pullout is required for the work you request, the pullout portion of your service bill will be at no charge. This includes a credit of $6.00/per foot on our bottom paint special package. (Boats weighing 30 tons or less/fiberglass and aluminum only.)

- We will also apply a 10% discount to labor (excluding bottom paint special labor).

These discounts will apply if the work is ordered by you when the water level at the Grafton gauge is above 22.0 feet during this current high water event.

We know the high water is discouraging, but it won’t last forever, and this is an opportunity for you to take advantage of an otherwise unfortunate situation.

Give us a call today and schedule that work you have been putting off, and you can save on downtime and money!

   River Receding, Cleanup Now Focus........

Each day, the level of the Mississippi River falls at Alton, and now cleaning up is the main focus of officials.  City of Alton crews were cleaning up debris and driftwood from  the Alton Riverfront Park area, and the Argosy Casino intends to reopen on Saturday.  The director of Alton's Public Works Department, Bob Barnhart, stated that they are trying to get things as close to normal as possible........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend

Crews Examining Roads As River Falls........

Traffic is still having to skirt the Mississippi River as it continues to recede in the Riverbend area.  Portions of U.S. Route 67 between West Alton and the Clark Bridge, as well as the majority of the Great River Road remain submerged.  Joe Monroe, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, stated that they would need to examine the Great River Road prior to reopening it.  Monroe added that he is amazed at the amount of sand and silt left by the swift moving currents........

New Tunes and a Dash

Another week has passed and some headway has been made , In any project like this one there will be dead spots. This week started out like that but then quickly changed. In the very beginning of the project as we were preping the boat to strip the interior the mirror frame delaminated. Sorry too big of a word,The glue joint let go and the frame came off. So the entire time that I have worked on the project I knew that eventually I would have to fix this issue.

Note the absence of the frame around the mirror

My friend Tom who helped me prep the boat in the beginning has graciously
accepted my invitation to help me put the mirror frame back on. At first glance
it doesnt seem to be a huge issue, except that the project designer " Suzanne"
doesnt want us to use any exposed fastners that will spoil the clean face of the
frame and make it different than all the rest. This will add a wrinkle to the
repair and give it an element of challenge. But true to form Tom and I are up
to the challenge. Tom did some thinking and made some arms to hook in to the
bottle sockets on the bottom and to clamped on top. Then wood wedges to
apply pressure at just the right points.

St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Traffic on Middle Mississippi Resumes as River Levels Drop

In response to receding water, the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are taking steps to get river traffic moving again after the Mississippi River crested on Tuesday, marking the fourth highest recorded water level since the St. Louis Corps of Engineer gage was installed in 1861.

This afternoon, the Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi, in consultation with the river industry, reopened a five-mile stretch of the Mississippi River to southbound commercial traffic that was closed on Monday. Northbound traffic will resume after sunset tonight. This decision was based on careful planning and consideration for safety and navigability of the river.

Additionally, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District has opened Mississippi River Locks 24 in Clarksville and Locks 27 in Granite City, Ill. Locks 24 and 25 closed May 31 in anticipation of the high water. Locks 27 closed June 2 as flooding neared record levels.

Current levels at Locks 25 in Winfield, Mo., and the Kaskaskia Lock and Dam on the Kaskaskia River are not low enough to reopen at this time. The closures were essential to protect critical components and facilities and be able to restore services as quickly and economically as possible after water levels drop.

Since the closure, the official queue of vessels waiting to pass through the affected section grew to 8 vessels and 63 barges, equivalent to over 3,600 semi trucks with of cargo. However, the actual number is likely much higher, as most members of the river industry were able to predict the closure and moored their vessels at other locations along the river.

While St. Louis Harbor is open to commercial traffic, the area remains closed to recreational boaters due to safety concerns. Additionally, the Coast Guard and Corps of Engineers advise all recreational boaters to remain off all major waterways due to large amounts of debris, fast currents, unmarked submerged objects and general dangerous conditions.

“The Coast Guard is present on the Mississippi River to facilitate navigation and ensure the safety of those who work on the river,” said Capt. Byron Black, commander of Sector Upper Mississippi River. “Today marks another point of success in a year of challenging conditions on the Western Rivers. The reopening of the river speaks to the close working relationship between the Coast Guard, the Army Corps, and the river industry.”

     Flooding Hindering Life In Hardin........

The Mississippi River has crested, and the Illinois River has receded significantly.  However, inconveniences and economic strife are rising across Calhoun County.  Hardin's Mayor, Phil Gress stated that the Illinois River was receding, which was a good thing.  He added that the Illinois department of Transportation had raised the county road heading south.  IDOT also raised Illinois Route 100 heading north, which is the only road taking Hardin residents to the grocery store........

A Bikeway was opened over the McKinley Bridge.

In 2004, the Great Rivers Greenway District worked with the Metro East Park and Recreation District to make an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation to open up a bikeway/pedestrian access on the McKinley Bridge. This project was finished and officially opened up Saturday, 07 June 2008. They had a beautiful day for the festivities. This was the first pedestrian/bike trail over the Mississippi River in the St. Louis area.

Search Still On For Missing Rafter........

Recovery workers are still looking for the body of Jon Franklin, who disappeared last Friday while rafting with friends.  Franklin was last seen in the Meramec River.  He was hanging from one of the rafts rented by the group he was with.  He was not wearing a floatation device.  Sergeant Al Nothum of the Missouri Highway Patrol stated that search efforts are hindered by water covering fields, and an abundance of driftwood in the river........

News Release From BoatUS

Five Helpful Boating Tips You Can Thank Seaworthy For

BoatUS Boat Damage Avoidance Publication Celebrates 30 Years

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 5, 2013 – Everyone loves a good story about boating mishaps – as long as it’s not their own. For 30 years the BoatUS Marine Insurance damage avoidance publication Seaworthy has combed through the BoatUS claims files to shed light on how boats are damaged and how boaters are injured, and to suggest research-based solutions to keep it’s readers from becoming a statistic. Free to BoatUS insureds and available to others by annual subscription, Seaworthy celebrates its 30th Anniversary with five boating maintenance and safety tips it helped to bring to the boating public’s awareness:

1. The causes of boat sinkings (while at the dock) are as varied as the four seasons: In the winter, the number one cause of boat sinkings is due to moisture-laden snow weighing the boat down which can submerge a cracked or damaged plastic thru-hull fitting below the waterline. Shortly after being launched in the spring, boats most often sink because of missing or damaged hose clamps that were removed in the fall to winterize the engine. The cause of summertime sinkings varies from worn out underwater fittings (such as I/O bellows or corroded through-hulls) to hurricanes. Autumn leaf-clogged deck drains or scuppers combined with heavy rains cause many fall sinkings.

2. The #1 reason for boat fires is wiring faults: DC wiring problems lead the pack in causes of boat fires, with shore power faults a close second. Every boater needs to make maintaining their boat’s electrical system a priority.

3. When it comes to swimming in a marina, just say no: Not wanting to get run down is good reason why swimming in a marina or near docks is a bad idea, but that’s not the only danger. Nearly a decade ago, Seaworthy first reported on “electric shock drowning” (ESD) in which leaking 110-volt electrical current was taking the lives of young swimmers in fresh water. The difficulty in distinguishing ESD from drowning kept the problem from being well understood or publicized until recently. Seaworthy continues to be at the forefront of educating boaters on what they need to do to make their boats and docks safe.

4. Hurricane damage can be lessened: Over two decades ago Seaworthy began to look at ways to lessen hurricane damage to boats and marinas. Today, boat owners, as well as clubs and marinas with a hurricane plan that is fully implemented, can and will have less damage. Hauling the boat from the water is still the best way to reduce the chance for damage to boats and docks. Free hurricane planning materials are available at BoatUS.com/hurricanes.

5. Ethanol and boats don’t mix (very well): After BoatUS members in the Northeast began to complain of mysterious catastrophic engine failures and myriad fuel system problems such as rotted fuel lines, gunked carburetors and fuel tanks nearly a decade ago, Seaworthy investigated and shed light on an issue that still has large repercussions for boaters today. Seaworthy continues to research and report on ethanol-related issues and advises boaters on how to avoid engine damage from ethanol blends.

To view back issues of Seaworthy, view maintenance tips, download free hurricane plans or to subscribe, go to www.BoatUS.com/seaworthy..

US Army Corps of Engineers

Burcham becomes first female General Officer on the Mississippi River

    Commission

Brig. Gen. Burcham is commander of the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, headquartered in Cincinnati Ohio. The division has seven engineer districts totaling over 4,800 people operating in a seventeen state area, and is charged with directing federal water resource development in the Great Lakes and Ohio River basins with infrastructure valued at over $80 billion. With an annual operating and construction budget exceeding $2 billion, missions include planning, construction and operations of navigation structures and flood damage reduction, hydropower, environmental restoration, water conservation, recreation and disaster assistance.

The Corps of Engineers members of the Mississippi River Commission provide representation and leadership from the nation's three largest watersheds:
-Mississippi River
-Missouri River
-Ohio River

All MRC members are nominated and appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate of the United States.

The commission was created by an Act of Congress on June 28, 1879 to plan and provide for the general improvement of the entire length of the Mississippi River. This includes improving navigation, preventing destructive floods and facilitating commerce. The presidential appointees consist of three officers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a representative from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and three civilians, two of whom must be civil engineers.

The commission itself is an advisory body. Its general duties include recommending policy and work programs, studying and reporting on modifications or changes to the Mississippi River and Tributaries project, commenting on matters authorized by law, making inspection trips, and holding public hearings that facilitate exchanges of viewpoints and ideas between the public and the MRC. Since 1879 the commission has been "listening, inspecting, partnering and engineering" with water resource interests in a watershed that is influenced by the drainage of over 41 percent of the United States and two provinces of Canada.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Reminds The Public About Flooding Dangers
     NEWS RELEASE

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to remind the public that flooding continues to affect safety on both the waterways and roadways. Flooding, due to the recent heavy rains, has proven to be extremely dangerous and even fatal.

The weekend's storms created flooding issues all across the state. Three fatalities have resulted from the flooding so far. One fatality involved an individual trying to cross a flooded roadway and the other two involved individuals standing near flooded areas. Many of the roads across the state which are near or crossover waterways are still under water, and should be considered impassable and extremely dangerous to cross.

For their safety and that of their passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT -- it is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them.

Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground.

The Patrol also asks boaters across the state to take extra precautions when boating in flooded areas. Many areas of Missouri have experienced large amounts of rainfall over the last week causing rivers and lakes to become swollen. Many times the right decision is to stay off the water.

In areas where lakes or rivers have spilled over the banks, erosion and damage can occur to flooded structures, docks, or water laden levees by boat wakes. Boaters should avoid operating in these areas. If operation in these areas is necessary boaters should operate at idle speed so as not to cause a wake.

Flooded rivers and streams with moving currents present some of the most dangerous situations a boater can encounter. Fast moving water can easily capsize or flip a boat, especially when combined with fixed objects such as trees and buildings. Boaters should avoid any operations in these swift flowing waters.

Many lakes and rivers across the state have only seen routine increases in water levels. It is for the safety of the public and to minimize damage to property that the Highway Patrol requests boaters avoid waterways that have been impacted by the most severe flooding.

The Patrol encourages motorists and watercraft operators to protect themselves by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint and everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life and Wear It!!!

BOATERS:
With this week's flooding, the U.S. Coast Guard has put a restriction on recreational vessels on the Middle Mississippi.

In addition to the safety concerns, river conditions make rescue operations very difficult should someone get into trouble. Inundated and nearly submerged levees are also susceptible to damage caused by passing vessel and boat wakes.

Stay safe and respect the river!

.

Update from facebook 06-03-13

St. Louis District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wrote....

The Coast Guard's restriction is between Alton and St. Louis Harbor. Usually when we refer to Middle Mississippi, we're talking about the portion of the river between the confluence with the Missouri River and the Ohio River.

Mississippi River Near St. Louis, Missouri

    Majority Of Levees Still Holding........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is saying that the Mississippi River has crested at Alton and Grafton, but it will be slow to recede, as more rains have fallen upstream.  Public health officials are saying that it is not against the law to play in the floodwaters, but due to the possibility of disease or injury, it is not a good idea........

     Amren Recommends Keeping LOTO Structures........

Recently, Amren Missouri made a proposal to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that would allow some 200 decks, gazebos, patios and boat houses to remain in place, even though they were built on Amren's property.  The proposal comes a year after FERC gave an order that homes and structures within the Lake Ozark project boundary be removed.  On Wednesday, Amren identified over 200 structures and determined that they did not affect the operation of the project........

Levees Breached As Mississippi River Crests........

Even as the Mississippi River was cresting through the St. Louis area, it broke through two levees, and is threatening to breach a third.  The Mississippi broke a levee protecting bottom land close to it's confluence with the Missouri River, as well as a levee along an island close to the Chain of Rocks.  It was expected that a levee between the Amren Missouri power plant and Portage des Sioux would break Wednesday.   Workers constructed a gravel berm to protect the farmland behind the levee........

June 15th Margaritaville Party postponed.
After a lengthy discussion with Sonny Robbins we have decided to postpone the June 15 Margaritaville Party. We feel that the river will not be down enough to clean the parking lots so there will be ample parking. After I have had a chance to talk with Lenny Frisch (the steel drummer) we can then decide on an alternate date.

Northbound Clark Bridge Lanes Switching To Two Way Traffic........

Tuesday evening, crews from Missouri and Illinois were working on converting the northbound lanes of the Clark Bridge to handle two way traffic.  Officials are expecting to have the conversion completed by the Wednesday morning rush hour at the latest.  Originally, a Missouri Department of Transportation spokesman stated that the lane conversion was not going to happen.  After discussions with the Illinois Department of Transportation, a plan was hatched to accommodate the switch........

Flooding Making Life Difficult In Hardin........

Each morning, Hardin village officials are meeting to discuss rising water and flooding issues that need to be handled.  The big topic of Tuesday's meeting was the question of elevating the road north of Hardin. Earlier in the year, the Illinois Department of Transportation rocked over the road, but the agency has opted not to now, as water is over the road.  The road is the only road that takes Hardin residents to the grocery store........

Illinois River At Kampsville, Illinois

Owner Of Kampsville Inn Upset With FEMA........

Louie Hazelwood, proprietor of Louie's Kampsville Inn, has owned the business for 28 years, and has seen the Illinois River flood it 12 or 13 times.  The most recent was this past weekend.  Typically, Hazelwood would wait for the floodwaters to recede, then clean up and re-open.  This year is different, however, as Hazelwood is not sure that his federal flood insurance will be renewed.  FEMA is saying it won't........
